About the Author
Arno Hollosi works as coordinator in the University Department for Information Technologies and Business Informatics at CAMPUS 02, Graz, Austria. After studying telematics, he worked at the Institute for Applied Data Processing, where he focused on cryptography, PKI, and XML. Later, he worked as the technical lead of a special task force at the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria, where he was responsible for the IT strategy, and later as a systems architect and quality manager for Siemens international projects.

Finally, a PHP book that DOES NOT use MySQL on its content.

For months, maybe a year, I stumbled to find a good resource (book, not online material) that can explain how to integrate PHP with Microsoft's technologies. Found this one almost by "mistake", looking for something else here at Amazon and I am really pleased with my purchase.
"Integrating PHP with Windows" covers a lot of material: MS-SQL, IIS, Active Directory, even Exchange. So if you are new on any of those areas this is not the book for you. Basic experience with PHP programming is also expected but I'm new to PHP and found no issues with the book's content. PHP code is easy to follow.
Now, after that initial disclaimer, I've found this book very good on its explanations and straight to the point. Very nice screen shoots and the writing style is fun and clear.
I bought it mainly because the MS-SQL section and so far, the book has helped me in building a small Project of my own at no time, integrating PHP, Apache (not mentioned in the book) and a MS-SQL2008 database engine. Previous experience with MS-SQL will help for sure (I'm a professional SQL dba) but the scripts are clear and easy to follow; you can test those quickly and later modify to meet different scenarios if required. Author uses Adventureworks database(s) which is easy to download and find online anyway.
There are instructions of how to install PHP on Windows, so if this is your 1st attempt installing PHP, you will get some nice guidance in the book. The book has several chapters devoted to MS-SQL administration which I think will be really handy for those who are more experienced with MySQL. Keep in mind though that MS-SQL 2008 is a very rich and complex product, so I would not rely on this book only if you're planning to learn more about MS-SQL (administration and coding). Instead, I would advise to buy Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 Internals (for overall features and administration) and Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals (more T-SQL and code oriented)
I fully recommend this book to the professional PHP programmer or MS-SQL DBA who have not integrated both technologies before. PHP has proven to be a very solid language and combined with products like MS-SQL2008, I'm sure any experience web developer is capable of create "killer apps" for almost any situation. The solutions on this book can certainly reduced some costs if ASP or even IIS is replaced with open source alternatives like PHP or Apache.

Very Good

I bought the book because I found this one having the biggest section about LDAP. Even though I am running Linux servers, I found this book extremely helpful in terms of learning the insights of LDAP structure. Sure you can look parts for parts on the topics that you want to learn and find pieces online or you can buy this book and have it all under a well documented nice neat and accessible anytime.
