One of the better books
By Opinion Shared
This book translates better to Kindle format than any other tech material I have purchased. SBS contrary to mythos is not a stripped down version of Windows server but a well blended compilation of Windows technologies such as Exchange Share Point and more that are even under an experienced Systems admin a bit of a pain to configure from scratch and get working just right. The book starts off with information anyone in the industry should have been taught in school but does it allot better than many technical institutes.

This is a true must have for a beginner in I.T. for just the beginning chapters if nothing else as universal principals are well explained and explored in an easy friendly manner. This Author is a true educator unlike so many Parrots out there.

The remaining chapters are also well worth coming to understand for anyone working in this environment. a nice companion to this book is the extraordinary video series on this topic over at Trainsignal I.T. training courses.

Way to go Craig Zacker you are an amazing author and educator.

Great reference for someone with limited SBS experience
By Jeff K.
I have been tasked to help setup a small network with Win 8 Pro Clients and SBS 2011 Server. The problem is someone before me had started the setup. I have limited SBS experience, but after reading through this book I have been able to solve several issues that existed on the network.

I still have some questions about specific group policies, but being the Pocket Consultant I didn't full expect it to answer everything! However, it has given me enough knowledge to now know conceptually what it is I need to do. It is no just a matter of figuring out the details. (That's what google is for, right?).

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who does not have a strong background in setting up SBS or is rusty because they have not had to setup a server in years.

I think the book is pretty good, easy to follow
By Amazon Customer
I think the book is pretty good, easy to follow. The subject is not my favorite but I needed to help an entity with their server that they had not gotten the hardware to run SBS best. Only 8GB RAM (the minimum) and 2 256GB hard drives. I used this book to help to install on a machine I gave them that is so far ahead of what they had. Then you got the lost lic. codes and they are still using an un-activated copy of SBS. Still a mess but that is the way MS does it. Go Linux!!!

Book Review
By Mark Hatten
I have just started to read this book and experience my first training sessions. So far I am impressed with the ease of read and how it applies to the demo sytem. I bought this book with the intent to have our end users use it for self training and as a reference source with CRM 2011. A plus for me is the electronic copy I used to share through our Sharepoint team site.

A Good Start
By Gregory P. Alford
What is included is well done and informative. What was not included is what is dissappointing. CRM 2011 is a deep software package and requires several books, but this one could have included more on using the application. Still it is a great reference for what is included, it is well written and therefore is on my bookshelf.

Not recommended!
By Joker
After being impressed by the 70-461 book and passing the exam with flying colours, I thought I would give this one a shot. Boy was I wrong. This book is beyond bad and you will need to allocate a few hours per chapter just to get through some of the mistakes in it:

- First of all, even if you follow the instructions in the exercises from chapter 3 and onwards step by step, the SSIS packages won't run. At first you may think you've made a mistake somewhere but even the solutions in the Solutions folder don't run because they are full of design flaws.
- The language used is extremely ambigious and can be interpreted in different ways. It's easy to get confused even if you have considerable experience with DWs and SSIS.
- Some of the instructions are simply wrong and the prerequisites are not stated. For example, the instructions on installing MDS in chapter 15 are missing several key points.

I could go on but it suffices to say that I am extremely disappointed in Microsoft's using this book as the official preparation for the 70-463 exam. It's a very sloppy job and if you have an alternative, please use another book.

Don't depend on the Exercises to be accurate
By Amazon Customer
After spending an hour trying to debug why I was unable to get through a particular exercise in the book, I figured out that there were quite a few issues with the way Tables were built as per the book, and there were missing steps that I needed to guess at to get to work.

The information may be reasonably accurate, but it gets very frustrating trying to troubleshoot an issue only to realize you did everything as specified, but the steps were wrong.

Great DW Reference Book -- Poor Training Kit
By Mario Anzaldua
The book is well organized and covers the huge topic of Data Warehousing in great detail. If you need a reference with hands-on examples of how to get things done--this book will get you up-to-speed and on track in no time. The practice exercises are well thought-out and provide invaluable guidance towards learning a broad and difficult subject. The nearly 800 pages are organized into 20 Chapters that cover each topic in detail. Each topic has 1 - 3 Lessons with an estimated completion time. I counted 56 Lessons with an estimated time of 45 hours. Add sample questions for each lesson and Case Studies for each Chapter and I suggest you plan on at least 60 hours to cover the book. The book covers SSIS in great detail including the new Deployment model which is essential. It offers only an introduction to Data Quality Services and Master Data Services but together with the exercises, that's enough to get through installation and a few examples. The book finishes with an intro to Data Mining and some nice examples of Advanced Data Quality with DQS Cleansing and Fuzzy Transforms. Get this book if you want/need to implement a Data Warehouse.

Now having said that, you will need to factor in the horrible state of the practice content. About 1/2 of the practice exercises don't work as presented. I have a good bit of experience in this field and managed to get through almost every exercise. But it was a struggle. I'd estimate that I spent at least 10 additional hours troubleshooting and cleaning up code. Much of the code is SSIS and quite a few packages (including the "Solution" packages)are blank! Some packages build on others as you progress through the lessons, so you might try jumping ahead to find some working code.

Now let's discuss the sample questions and included practice tests. I made sure that I understood every Chapter Lesson Question and all 186 Practice Test Questions thoroughly. Took the test and scored 628. Bummer. The Cert Exam is nothing like the practice material provided in the book. I went through the entire book a second time and purchased another practice exam (Thanks MS for the 2nd Shot) and passed ok.

If you are comfortable with this topic, can troubleshoot/debug code and/or want a great reference book--This does the job. I keep the pdf version handy for on-the-job reference. If you are new to this topic and/or looking to get your MCSA (this was the final exam for me) you might want to look elsewhere. I struggled with a rating. Clearly the authors put a lot into this book, but it was a disastrous training kit. Good Luck.

Amazon.com Review
Scott Kelby is both funny and generous. His wry sense of humor doesn't get in the way of the hundreds of nifty techniques in this new collection of Down & Dirty Tricks. In fact, when you first flip quickly through the book, gobbling up all the creative ideas and timesaving tips, his sly jokes only add to the I've-just-hit-the-lottery feeling.

Whatever you're looking for--type that looks distressed, made of gel, or carved in stone; shadows in perspective or in motion; text that wraps around a globe; a glinting starburst on the edge of an object; a logo artificially placed at the bottom of a pool; or a starry sky created in an instant--just about every trick is here. And most are done in 10 steps or less. Also, each page has a Quick Tip sidebar (there're over 200 of them) that are worth the price of the book alone, with everything from getting better results from your eyedropper tool (click on Options and change the Point Sample to "3 by 3 average") to the quickest way to change units of measurement (the secret is in the Info palette).

The book has been updated since the previous edition with mostly new illustrations, many new and better ways to perform the same tricks, and a few completely new ones. Project files and images can be downloaded from the book's companion Web site at downanddirtytricks.com. Although aimed at experienced Photoshop users, the text is detailed enough for readers of all levels. For example, steps like "make a copy of that layer by dragging it to the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette" or "press the letter m to switch to the Rectangular Marquee tool" are repeated in full whenever a trick calls for them. This not only helps beginners, it allows all readers to hop around the book and be able to carry out any trick in any order. Yet another reason this book could've been titled Speedy Down & Dirty Tricks. --Angelynn Grant

From Library Journal
It seems to be the year for launching new versions of old standards. Photoshop 7 introduces a number of new features that should drive demand for manuals. Everything addresses Photoshop beginners, with two chapters on resources and solving common problems that should be especially helpful; appropriate for public libraries. Teach Yourself, for beginning to intermediate users, is more thorough, covering the channels, masks, and other techniques that Everything omits, in addition to the basics. Chapter Q&As, quizzes, and exercises help users learn on their own; a valuable purchase for all public libraries. A full-color guide for intermediate users, Down & Dirty explains step by step "cool tricks," showing how to achieve easily impressive special effects, from wrapping type around a circle to creating backlit photo backgrounds. Sidebar tips offer additional information, and images in the book are available for free online. Magic also instructs intermediate to advanced users on creating cool, full-color effects but contains longer projects that each combine several techniques. The CD includes project files and demonstration software. Larger public libraries should consider either title.

Photoshop 7 Down & Dirty Tricks
By Richard R. Zellner
Scott Kelby has a way or writing books for the adverage person, but puts enough interesting information in there for experienced graphic designers. Photoshop 7 Down & Dirty Tricks is the top book of his in my opinion. You could start on any page and pick up something fun and interesting to work on. If you take the time, you even get friendly support from Scott in straight terms. When I read it, I get a sense of ease in being able to figure out how to create really cool tricks in a short amount of time. I could see some people being dissappointed in the book for this. Instead of diving deep into any design concepts or photoshop tools, he focuses right on particular effects. Once you complete the book, if you feel the need to read it from cover to cover, you may feel cheated if you're the kind of person who likes in depth explainations of tools and filters of photoshop. I see this book being best for someone who already has a basic understanding of photoshop and wants to pick up a few really cool tricks here and there. If it's the first time you're working with photoshop, you'll be able to put together some really impressive artwork in no time. I think the extent of your photoshop abilities will be pretty limited in the long run if you choose this book as your source of learning a highly developed graphics application, however. It's comparible to learning a couple songs on guitar, but skipping all the principals that could help you in playing or writing whatever song you want to.

Excellent Photoshop Reference Book
By [KNDY] Dennis A. Amith
If you have purchased the previous versions of Scott Kelby's Photoshop Down & Dirty Tricks book, I highly recommend getting this new version.
In his introduction he does talk about if you need Photoshop 7 to purchase the book or can someone use Photoshop 5 and use the book and he lets the reader know that in previous books, to make certain shapes you needed to go through quite a few steps but with Photoshop 7, it's much easier and less time consuming to do certain tricks which he had in his previous books and also he has added a lot of new tricks using the latest Photoshop version.
He also points out the advantages of Photoshop 7 and how the newer features will benefit photographers but he mentions that P6 owners can take advantage of the book.
I like to think that I know Photoshop very well but what I love about his book is learning how he does certain tricks so quickly, I seem to do some of those tricks in a more time consuming manner. So, to see his way of doing certain tricks definitely helps. You see, I'm not a manual reader and as
much as I would like to sit back and learn every new feature of Photoshop 7, I don't have the time and maybe I'm just too hard headed that would rather learn on my own. And if you are like me, then you will definitely love this book.
Anyway, for those who are not familiar with his books. You don't have to read it like a usual book, just peruse the pages and if there is a trick you like, you can learn it. He explains step by step how he creates the trick and on each page at it's sides, there are tips for Photoshop 7 users and how to utilize the best image for print or web work.
Kelby takes a look at the current Photoshop trends that he sees in magazines within the last year and incorporates it into his book. From metallic effects to 3D effects to advanced shadow techniques and many of the popular effects you see on print and the web from popular fad/tricks such as the tv scan lines, Matrix text, halftone pop dots effect, glassy reflections and so
much more. Kelby's "Down & Dirty Tricks" has never disappointed me and has only been a big positive to adding his techniques to my print and web work but also to learn to do certain techniques quicker.
An excellent Photoshop reference book! Check it out!

techniques illustrated step by step
By A Customer
The format of this updated edition for Photoshop 7 is pretty much identical to the previous edition for Photoshop 6. If you already have that book, then perhaps this one may be redundant. Most of the concepts and techniques from that book have been duplicated in the current edition, with the addtition of a few new ones. However, it is refreshing to note that the author had taken the trouble to use completely new images and illustrations.
Techniques are described and illustrated with corresponding color photos for each step, throughout the entire book. The structure of the book is very much "task-oriented" -- meaning, in order to create a certain visual effect, you follow a sequence of steps.
For those who don't have the previous edition, and have some basic working knowledge of Photoshop, this book is certainly worth getting. It shows you some really neat ideas.

How can a company's applications be scalable and have high availability?

To achieve this, along with developing the applications, you must also have an infrastructure that can support them. For example, you may need to add servers or increase the capacities of existing ones, have redundant hardware, add logic to the application to handle distributed computing, and add logic for failovers. You have to do this even if an application is in high demand for only short periods of time. Life becomes even more complicated (and expensive) when you start to consider issues such as network latency and security boundaries.

The cloud offers a solution to this dilemma. The cloud is made up of interconnected servers located in various data centers. However, you see what appears to be a centralized location that someone else hosts and manages. By shifting the responsibility of maintaining an infrastructure to someone else, you're free to concentrate on what matters most: the application. If the cloud has data centers in different geographical areas, you can move your content closer to the people who are using it most. If an application is heavily used in Asia, have an instance running in a data center located there. This kind of flexibility may not be available to you if you have to own all the hardware.

Another advantage to the cloud is that it's a pay as you go proposition. If you don't need it, you don't have to pay for it. When demand is high, you can scale up, and when demand is low, you can scale back. Yes, by moving applications to the cloud, you're giving up some control and autonomy, but you're also going to benefit from reduced costs, increased flexibility, and scalable computation and storage. The Windows Azure Architecture Guide shows you how to do this.

Moving Applications to the Cloud on the Microsoft Windows Azure Platform is a 'must' for any who would build applications to be scalable and have high availability. The cloud offers many solutions to both, but it holds special challenges. This book is the first in a planned series about the Windows Azure platform and as such focuses on a migration plan, introducing a fictitious company's needs to teach step-by-step migration processes. Any who wish to begin using the cloud system needs this specific primer!

Still the Authoritative Reference, but...
By James Taylor
Having been a fan of Mark Russinovich's for some time now, I always look forward to new editions of the Windows Internals book. I own the fourth and fifth editions, and a week ago I purchased the sixth edition, which is now released in two parts. Part 1 is the subject of this review.

Since I also own the fifth edition of this work, I was able to review both editions side-by-side and the differences are not significant. The sixth edition expands a little more on some topics, but IMHO there is not a whole lot of new information considering the incremental nature of the upgrade from Windows 6.0 to 6.1, and the minor differences between the Windows 6.0 (Vista and Server 2008) and Windows 6.1 (Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2) kernels.

Part 1 prepares the reader by explaining basic concepts and giving an overview of Windows system architecture. It then addresses System Mechanisms, such as Trap Dispatching and the Image Loader, and Management Mechanisms, such as the Registry, and Windows Services. It then deals with Processes, Threads and Jobs in detail, before concluding with treatments of Security, and finally Networking. Additionally, to enhance understanding, explanations are bolstered by practical, hands-on experiments.

Part 2, however, contains some of my favorite topics, but this volume won't be available until later this fall. These topics include Input/Output, Storage Management, Memory Management, File Systems, and the Startup and Shutdown Process. I guess I will have to wait for the release of Part 2 to review these.

As far as ratings go, I give this sixth edition of Windows Internals the same five-star rating as its predecessor. Although not a ground-breaking work, it is a well-researched and well-presented technical reference, worthy of the highest commendation. However, my issue is not with the technical merits of this reference, but with the protracted nature of its release, and its subsequent release in two parts, likely half a year apart.

Considering that Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 are only incremental upgrades to Windows Vista and Server 2008, and much of the fifth edition of Windows Internals applies to the current versions of these operating systems as well, I am baffled by the length of time it is taking to complete the sixth edition.

The only thing I can speculate is that Russinovich's new career as a successful novelist (with his second novel due out in September) leaves him little time to complete this current project.

Maybe it might be time to consider reducing the scope of the Windows Internals books to something less ambitious so they can be released in a timelier manner. Because, let's face it, by the time Part 2 of this book is released, Windows 8 will already be upon us, and then this work, no matter how authoritative, will have markedly less significance. Nevertheless, this book is still recommended.

Mind blowing detail
By Frustrated
Context for this review:

I'm not certain that I am the target audience for this book. I think it's more for programmers who require an intimate knowledge of the Windows OS for their work. I am not a programmer, but I do work in IT.

So, maybe this is light reading if you already know the difference between a spinlock and pointer. I am no stranger to difficult technical reading (I have a BS, CCNP and MCSA), but this book was like the mental equivalent of hiking up a freaking mountain. Rugged.

That said, I recommend it. I was frustrated because after years of working in IT and earning several Microsoft certifications, I still ran into whole sections of the OS that I'd never heard of before and had no idea what they did (What the hell is DCOM?).

I'm not aware of any other books that go into this level of detail regarding the Windows OS. I'm glad I read it and I'm working my way through the second book now.

As Advertising
By Chuckles
This book delivers as advertised. It is a deep dive into the Windows architecture and as advertised is targeted toward developers. I am not a developer but was looking for a book that might give me insight into the things I see as a computer technician. Much of what is in this book is beyond my understanding and need. However, there is enough that hits home that I'm glad that I purchased it.

A main feature of the book is examples. The author does a very nice job of providing examples so you can see how the architecture blocks function and relate to each other. I have only read about 100 pages so far but am glad that I bought the book.

Many pages - less information
By Csaba Urbaniczky
The introduction starts with mentioning seven areas that the book will cover (page XIX), including three of my main interests: document and web content management, enterprise search and workflows that I will review here.

"Document collaboration has always been at the heart of what SharePoint provides" (page 12): Chapter 11, Managing Documents is 36 pages long and the term Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is not mentioned at all. Quick Parts is mentioned once but that is in Chapter 22, and with no information at all about all the issues you run into using Quick Parts for promotion/demotion of document properties. (Yes, I promise you that you will get a lot of issues in a serious application using Quick Parts.) There is no discussion of SharePoint document ID system and its limitations. (To be fair, neither has any other book that I have read.) In summary, the book has little information about how to set up SharePoint as a formal first class document management system; this is unfortunate since there are many surprises and issues to consider when using SharePoint as an Enterprise Content Management system.

The search part of the book, Chapters 18 and 19 are well written but it is not an introduction how to use search from an users point of view. For that you have to read "SharePoint 2013 for Dummies". It is mentioned that SharePoint 2013 supports search on PDF documents; only one other SharePoint 2013 book I have read gives that little vital piece of information. Neither in this book nor in any other book I have read is mentioned why the search results don't show the title of Word documents (you will have to search on Internet about how to fix this issue). Isn't the title of the document (and author and the unique document ID) the basic information you would like to see when doing a document search in an Enterprise Content Management system?

The book has a fair description of SharePoint Designer. It is mentioned twice that workflows can be connected to Content Types; however without the clarification that only SharePoint 2010 workflows can be connected to a Content Type, not the new SharePoint 2013 workflows, which you are supposed to use now. Further, in depth discussions are missing of approve workflow requirements and where SharePoint fails to support a correct formal approve process. (To be fair, neither has any other book that I have read.)

The information about user groups and permission levels is weak, although the book has a solution of a tiny issue that I have been looking for a while that no other book I have read mentions. However, neither in this book or any other book I have read is mentioned the issue that you can't rename a document when you use Contribute - without delete permission levels, the permission level to be used in a regulated ECM system.

The book has comparatively few practical examples how to solve things in its 871 numbered pages. If you are buying just one book to become a SharePoint super/power user, I recommend instead Beginning SharePoint 2013 - Building Business Solutions. But this book is still worth to have and read as the second power user book.

Edit: You must have read at least "SharePoint 2013 for Dummies" before reading this book, otherwise you will be confused. I previously wrote that the XPS format is not supported but XPS is now supported since some cumulative update, unclear which one.

Excellent Resource
By Dave
I'm a Business Intelligence professional, and I've seen a lot of companies use the massive beast that is SharePoint in several different ways. The book is more focused on the power users as opposed to developers, and it is a welcome asset given all the changes in SharePoint 2013. There are so many available features, and some of them can be so valuable to a business, but you need to know what this book tells you:
1) That the features exist
2) Where to access the features
3) How to effectively use the features

Pros:
Comprehensive list of features and guidance on how to use them
Well organized
Accessible writing style

Cons:
SharePoint is huge, and there are good options on the web for specific solutions - the book may be too much information for a lot of people who may have an important role in SharePoint, but who also have a focused role. My suggestion would be to buy a copy for the team instead of individuals.

For the end-user that wants to become a power-user
By T Anderson
This is the SharePoint book for the end-user that wants to become a power-user. It covers a ton of topics and it covers them in-depth.

The book is not intended for SharePoint developers for SharePoint administrators, although most SharePoint developers and administrators are also power users. So the book will come in handy when you're simply using share point as an end-user.

I have listed the table of contents below to give you an idea of what is covered in the book.

1. Introducing SharePoint 2013
2. Administration for business users
3. Working with list and library apps
4. Working with collaboration sites
5. Using Office applications with SharePoint
6. Sharing information with SharePoint social networking
7. Using and creating workflows
8. Planning site content
9. Creating and formatting content pages
10. Adding, editing, connecting, and maintaining web parts
11. Managing documents
12. Designing web content management sites
13. Implementing compliance, records management, and eDiscovery
14. Planning for business intelligence and key performance indicators
15. Implementing better business intelligence with Excel Services and SQL Server 2012
16. Building powerful dashboards with PerformancePoint Services
17. Working with Visio Services
18. Discovering information with SharePoint 2013 Search
19. Creating a customized SharePoint 2013 search experience
20. Creating, managing, and designing sites
21. Creating enterprise forms
22. Working with external content
23. Introduction to custom development

One big plus with this book is that it comes with an e-book download that is free when you purchase the printed book. That makes it very good a reference also.

The authors also have some downloads available of the examples that are used in the book.

This book really surprised me. It had a lot more information in it than I expected. The authors writing styles are great, so it makes for easy read. I would think that most people will use this as a reference though, reading the chapters that address their immediate needs.

Overall this book is definitely worth the cost, especially when you factor in the free e-book. Although my role is usually an administrator of SharePoint or a developer in the SharePoint environment, end users still call me with a lot of questions that I can't answer about using the front end, so I will be keeping this book by my side.

For maximum enjoyment, forget the "pocket" part.
By Philip M. White
The best way to think of Stanek's Windows 8 Administration Pocket Consultant (O'Reilly Media) is to ignore the "pocket" part. At 672 pages, it's much closer to the "______ Bible" end of the scale.

And true to the Bible end of the scale, this book truly covers a huge landscape in surprising detail. As I was reading through the material, I got the feeling that this is basically an offline version of Microsoft's TechNet, a vast knowledge base (among other resources) for IT professionals. In the several weeks of using Windows 8, I've perused several TechNet articles about this-or-that. I've found a similar level of thoroughness in this book, for topics ranging from generic to highly exotic.

The difference between TechNet and this book: the latter is portable, better organized, features screenshots, and provides step-by-step instructions where possible.

This leads into my only annoyance with this book. Presumably the audience is an IT professional, or at least a power user. I often feel that the author is too thorough for this audience. He leaves absolutely no room for ambiguity. For example, in Chapter 5 there's a 13-step procedure for enforcing a certain behavior for Group Policy scripts. For 11 of those steps, the author makes sure to tell you, "Tap or click OK." As another example, almost anywhere there's a possibility to save a password (such as in a wireless network security dialog), the author adds a SECURITY ALERT informing the reader that this is a poor security practice. No wonder the book is 672 pages long.

On the other hand, I marvel at the wide variety of topics that William Stanek managed to cover in only 672 pages. I found information on how to create a master image of Windows 8. I found a detailed, 19-step breakdown of the Windows 8 startup process, along with a troubleshooting guide to it. I found a good intro to Group Policy and Offline Files, in large part covering Moskowitz' authoritative Group Policy book. I found plentiful information on BitLocker. And so much more.

All in all, while I won't be carrying this book in any pocket, I appreciate it greatly. Its 16 chapters allow the reader to become truly familiar with Windows 8 administration.

A great work, deserves to be read by everyone
By M. Hinzo
I wanted to get a head start on Windows 8 so picked up this book and another book. This is the better of the two and the only true "secrets" book. I've more highlight in this book in two weeks than I have for any other book before. Many secrets and insider tips. It's say administrator but anyone can learn from this.

Chapter 1 - 3 are on installing, running, configuring and customizing Windows 8. These alone are worth the price of the book.

Chapter 4 will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about how your computer starts and how to configure start up.

Chapter 5 and 6 will tell you about policies and preferences for business computers.

Chapter 7 will tell you how to create account and keep your credentials stored.

Chapter 8 will tell you how to install applications and troubleshoot when something happens.

Chapter 9 will tell you all about hardware devices and how to connect and configure them.

Chapter 10 will tell you how to get and give remote assistance, maintain your computer, resolve problems, back up and recovery.

Chapter 11 will tell you about encryption and how you can use it.

Chapter 12 will tell you how to install and manage disks, burn dvds and fix disk problems.

Chapter 13-14 will tell you about file permissions and folder sharing, offline files and disk quotas.

Chapter 15-16 are on networking and configuring your connections.

I learned more in the first three chapters of this book than I did from the whole other book. If you want to know Windows 8 left, right, up, down, and sideways this is the book. I recommend it.

Big disappointment for me
By Injun
I just received this book with great anticipation. I was very disappointed. Windows 8 is a major release, one of the most significant in Windows history, and includes significant new capabilities. Not the least of these is the new Metro environment for tablets or multi-touch devices. Searching the index for any of these terms yields virtually nothing. Some of the other most important Windows 8 capabilities (to me) are completely missing from this book. It may be a matter of expectations. However, the intended audience includes "accomplished users who are intending to configure and maintain Windows 8". I am basically a home user and have been working with Windows for several years. I consider myself at an intermediate level of expertise. I am my own system administrator and I intend to configure and maintain Windows 8. I have been reading about very interesting capabilities in Windows 8 and just installed it on two machines in my home. I was looking for comprehensive documentation on how to get the most out of the new features and capabilities offered by Windows 8. I view this book as a warmed over Windows 7--Windows XP book that reflects little to no effort to present the exciting new Windows 8 features.
For example, I want to use one of my systems as a server for robust centralized file storage for documents and multimedia files. I would also like to simplify and improve my backup for the 5 or 6 systems on my home network. And I want to use a Windows 8 machine to stream movies, video and music to my Xbox. Finally, I would like to be able to access my files when I am on vacation and traveling. So I expected a whole section on how to configure Storage Spaces and about thin provisioning and resiliency. Pocket Consultant includes nothing on storage spaces and does not even contain an index entry for the topic. Storage spaces should make striping and disk quotas, which are covered in great detail, obsolete for most home users.
I had hoped for an in depth explanation on how to best use new backup capabilities but there is no chapter on backup per se and you have to stumble on 'file history'.
The book provides no information on multimedia streaming much less any guide to configuration. There are several pages on how to configure modems for dial-up remote access, but there is only one brief mention of Skydrive. Remote Fetch is conspicuously absent. Skydrive is powerful and very useful and becomes more so via Windows 8.
I had hoped for a "best practices" approach that would guide me through implementation of the major new Windows 8 features. The author did not bother to cover many of the most attractive and significant capabilities that make Windows 8 worth the move. Perhaps this book will prove useful as a reference for more mundane Windows features in the future, but it is no help to me in configuring my systems and maximizing the power of Windows 8. I ordered and received and am perusing "Windows 8 Secrets" by Paul Thurrott. This is the book to buy.
