Amazon.com Review
Ed Bott and Carl Siechert have combined their considerable talents for producing user-level documentation in creating Microsoft Windows XP Inside Out. One of the most carefully researched books on Windows XP to date, this large volume has all the information and procedures most everyday users of the operating system will want. With its nicely formatted how-to instructions, detailed documentation of command-line commands, intelligent explanatory text, and broad scope, this book makes a great reference for a family or business that uses Windows XP extensively. Even the illustrations are more helpful than usual, largely because the publisher has gone to the trouble of annotating many of them with pointers and labels.
Bott and Siechert deal with the most controversial features of Windows XP, notably product activation, in a straightforward way. They simply explain what activation is for, tell how to go about it, and move on. If you're a power user interested in getting around activation and performing other unsanctioned hacks, look for your information in online newsletters. This book plays by Microsoft's rules, and that's fine. It's obvious that the authors have had access to Windows XP for some time, and spent a lot of time exploring its new features. Count on this book to explain the complete set of Windows XP's features--even the exciting networking stuff--in terms you can easily follow. --David Wall
Topics covered: Microsoft Windows XP (Professional and Home editions) for home and office users who want to install, use, and run applications. Emphasis is on basic set-up and configuration, hardware installation and modification, file management, multimedia, and networking.

Very Good XP Resource
By Tyguy
First I must take issue with some people who say that XP is completley new and different from 2000(from memory some reviews here say this). I'm a network administrator and we recently upgraded our network to Windows 2000. What does this have to do with XP? Well, in preparing for the upgrade I came accross Mark Minasi's book, Mastering Windows 2000 Server. Eventually we started getting outside clients who were buying new systems with Windows XP preloaed on them so I cracked open my msdn windows xp evaluation and went through the XP Inside and Out book. From reading this book and Mark's it became very clear that Windows XP really is Windows 2000 with a Win 9x/ME influenced GUI. In other words is a refined version of 2000 with lots of new shiny toys that the barebones 2000 was missing (yes, things like msconfig are back). You see, 90% of Windows XP Inside and Out is already gone over in good Windows 2000 books such as Mark Minasi's. The only new information here was learning about the new interface, and seeing what new features have been added into Media Player and the Support and help tools (these make me happy).
The reason why I'm bothering to talk about this is because if you're already a Windows 2000 expert like me, then you probably are better off with buying a thinner book that doesn't go into detail on the NTFS file system or other NT/2000 subjects that would be new for a Win 9x user. Just go get something that quickly goes over the new interface and the support tools.
However, if your coming straight from a Windows 9x environment or don't have much experience with 2000 (NT experience doesn't count) then I highly recommend this book. It goes over a lot of the NT/2000/XP basics that are very different from a Win 9x environment. Heck, even if you are an experienced 2000 expert I would still recommend this book because its very well written and has lots of nice details; you're just not going to be reading much new content.

The definitive guide to Windows XP for advanced users
By Old-and-Wise
There are two versions of this book. The hardcover version has a couple more chapters and also more free e-books on the accompanying CD-ROM. The paperback version is, not surprisingly, cheaper and more portable (but still heavy!).
There's a lot of "meat" in this book, and the two authors did a wonderful job of keeping the book very well organized and very well written. The writing is fluid and you can almost read it like a novel, of course, assuming you are a PC geek like myself. Most other computer books I can hardly follow without sitting in front of the computer, but this book is so clear and well illustrated that I read chapter after cheapter in one sitting even when I did not have my XP laptop with me.
In terms of content, it covers everything an advanced user needs in order to fine-tune Windows XP. Both Profesional and Home editions of the OS are covered. (The hardcover version of the book has a nice summary on the differences at the beginning of *each* chapter.) This is a must-have guide for anyone looking to take full advantage of Windows XP as well as trouble-shooting when things go wrong.

Buy This Book
By Mark Littleton
If you want a help book on Windows XP that does not waste 2 or 3 chapters with basic stuff that you have known since you played with your atari 2600, then Buy This Book, it deals with Intermediate/Advanced stuff without much wasted space....
I haven't had a chance to read the whole thing but I have tweaked my system with alot of advice and how to's from this book.....
If you are a former windows 2000 user, you may not be as excited as I am because I went from using the awful WinMe to XP, (hey! that rhymes)....anyway I don't regret anything about this book based on a quick look and read of a few chapters......
I hope this helps you with any decesions ......(...)
