I used this book as my final prep for the A+ exam and passed the 801. I am taking the 802 soon. What I realized after the exam was that this book lined up perfectly with the exam and had I focused on this book, my grade would have been better, especially when it came to the simulation questions. Please take this book seriously..Remember it's a rapid review, so you may need to do alternate preparations, but use this as a final check up and you should be good.

Not what I expected.

I received the book in two weeks and there was a hole in page 713. Some areas of the book presume that the reader understands the MS jargon the writer is referring to. Some practice examples are not clear and are frustrating. It would be more helpful if there was a visual demonstration on the disc.

This is a wonderful beginner's book. It provides interactive training that the staff found enjoyable to review. They liked the ablility to click on the "Show Me" button and the software would show them how to perform a function. They also liked be able to go at their own pace and the ability to review a topic as many times as needed. You can't go wrong for the money.

Fair Introduction to EF 5 Features with Model First

I purchased the ebook version of this book directly from the publisher. Since it was the first book available that covered EF 5 features, and was also a step by step guide, I thought it would be useful to update and augment my knowledge of Entity Framework. I read and worked through the entire book.

Overall, the author proceeds in a very step-by-step fashion (as the title indicates), and the only item that may be difficult for a beginner is knowing where SQL Server Express stores the .mdf and .ldf files (several times this is a required step, but the information is not provided).

The author uses a simple Windows Forms application to walk through all of the book's examples. Also, Database First and Code First are given brief treatment; Model First is used for almost all of the examples and topics covered.

The main EF 5 features, such as using Table-Valued Functions, enumerations, and model designer features are covered in some detail, but briefly. Both LINQ and Entity SQL are covered at length, mainly listing many of the possible usages; the samples for both are fairly limited. The book does discuss important topics such as concurrency, and also has interesting material found in the last section of the book, on working with POCO entities (from a Model First perspective), inheritance (but not differentiating the types of inheritance that EF offers), and using partial classes to customize basic methods like "SaveChanges()", among other things.

I won't provide a chapter-by-chapter summary, as the table of contents is fairly self-explanatory. I will say that for many chapters, the coverage of the topic is again brief.

Pros:
* The book is not long, so you can read and work through the samples in a short amount of time.
* The author does discuss some important topics, such as perceived performance vs. actual performance.
* There are very few typos or mistakes, with only minor errata.
* The author does respond to questions.
* The highlights of EF 5 are covered, albeit in a Model First approach.

Cons:
* The book does not cover any platforms other than Windows Forms; using EF with MVC, Web Forms, WCF, or any other platform is not discussed. I don't think a reader of this book could effectively use Entity Framework in a disconnected scenario, or even a web-based scenario.
* The book gives little coverage of Code First (and Database First); I would have traded in the chapter on Entity SQL for at least an introduction to Code First with migrations, as this is a popular option for developers, even if nothing has really changed from EF 4.3 to EF 5 in this regard.
* All of the models in the book use two entities (with the exception of the example on inheritance, which has five); a richer model would be more representative of a "real database".

I would recommend the book as a starting point for a junior or mid-level developer who has never worked with Entity Framework. That said, I would not let this be your last book (or tutorial) on Entity Framework by any means.

I highly recommend the Entity Framework books written by Julie Lerman, along with her courses on Pluralsight. Many other courses on Pluralsight also showcase Entity Framework with repository and unit of work patterns that are briefly touched on in this book.

Finally, I highly recommend Itzik Ben-Gan's book on Microsoft SQL Server 2012 T-SQL Fundamentals, if you are working with SQL Server. In general, I think that it is a good ideas for developers to understand SQL and the RDBMS itself as much as possible. I think this enables better usage of Entity Framework and better decision-making capabilities when running into its limitations.

If all Entity Framework developers were using Model First, or if the title indicated Model First, I would probably have gone with four stars. I waffled on the exact star rating because the author did not do a poor job. I simply think that covering (or discussing) platforms beyond Windows Forms, and also additional coverage of Code First was warranted, so I give this three stars.

Useless book and waste of money

Very disappointed with this book.

- Content is poorly organized. (if organized at all)
- 50% of the book are useless screenshots of Visual Studio windows
- Every chapter is a click through guide how to create a new project from scratch (can't you remember this from the first chapter, or didn't you ever create any projects in Visual Studio yet?), then how to add two lines of code here and there, and, unfortunately, no any good explanation what's going on under the hood
- Code samples are in C#, but styled like old VB scripts. Really hard to read and understand

There are much better books available from other publishers. Especially about new DbContext features and other important changes since Entity Framework 5.

Don't waste your money. At least go and preview the book content for yourself on Amazon.

Key concepts are poorly communicated. Sentence structure lacks formality necessary for computer science concepts. Prose is high school level. Poor editing of tutorial steps. EF concepts lost in a sea of VS designer and WinForms tutorial steps. To be clear - I don't object to WinForms but the VS designer content truly predominates and distracts from EF content. Lehrman sets a high standard and this text does not come close.

Fantastic book for 70-542

I purchased this book to prepare for the 70-542 exam. The book is very well written and its just hard to believe that so many concepts were covered in just 300 odd pages. Please note that this book is for developers and not for administrators. The book covers development concepts for search, BDC, infopath forms services, excel services, policies, records center and more.
I absolutely loved the way Patrick had a flow of thoughts going on in the book. It made absolute sense. Also, The chapter on BDC is probably the most comprehensive BDC coverage I have seen till date at one place. If you dont know anything about BDC and read this chapter, thats all you would need to know.
I just loved it.

Did not enjoy this book

This book concentrates on a very important subject - writing secure code for Windows. In particular it focuses on two aspects: (a) correct coding techniques and how to avoid security pitfalls, and (b) the particular Windows security API and its usage.
For the above reason I will rate this book with 2.5 stars.
Why not 5 stars?
I found the text well padded with the author opinions, stories, and samples, which in many cases I felt where unneeded for me.
I also found it very exhausting trying to fish-out from all the text, the knowledge that I felt I needed.
Some of the motives kept on coming up. I will try to summon here few, using my words:
1. This book is extremely important thus you must read it.
2. This book is extremely important thus you must read it.
3. Some developers don't understand anything about security.
4. You cannot believe how ignorant or lazy developers can be.
5. Most developers will give wrong answer for my next question.
And so on...
Many of the examples in the book show 'what NOT to do' and common mistakes rather then what to do.
I must admit that somewhere around the middle of the book I started to read it in a selective way, trying to avoid redundant text.

The most comprehensive, example-centric Microsoft secure coding book

I read six books on software security recently, namely "Writing Secure Code, 2nd Ed" by Michael Howard and David LeBlanc; "19 Deadly Sins of Software Security" by Michael Howard, David LeBlanc, and John Viega; "Software Security" by Gary McGraw; "The Security Development Lifecycle" by Michael Howard and Steve Lipner; "High-Assurance Design" by Cliff Berg; and "Security Patterns" by Markus Schumacher, et al. Each book takes a different approach to the software security problem, although the first two focus on coding bugs and flaws; the second two examine development processes; and the last two discuss practices or patterns for improved design and implementation. My favorite of the six is Gary McGraw's, thanks to his clear thinking and logical analysis. The other five are still noteworthy books. All six will contribute to the

production of more security software.

If "Building Secure Software" by Gary McGraw and John Viega was the Unix world's resource for secure coding, WSC2E is the Microsoft equivalent. Even as a Unix-deploying professional (who performs incident response on Windows compromises), I found plenty of OS-agnostic material to justify reading WSC2E. I especially like when the authors provide examples of what coders do wrong, followed by examples of what to do right. Remarkably for a book published in late 2002, WSC2E even explains cross-site scripting attacks afflicting major news organizations as recently as a few months ago! The rules for writing firewall-friendly applications in ch 15 were very welcome, and seldom seen elsewhere. The flaw-avoidance recommendations for technologies like RPC, SQL, and COM Internet Services were well-written.

The major problem with WSC2E, often shared by Microsoft titles, is the misuse of terms like "threat" and "risk." Unfortunately, the implied meanings of these terms varies depending on Microsoft's context, which is evidence the authors are using the words improperly. It also makes it difficult for me to provide simple substitution rules. Sometimes Microsoft uses "threat" when they really mean "vulnerability." For example, p 94 says "I always assume that a threat will be taken advantage of." Attackers don't take advantage of threats; they ARE threats. Attackers take advantage of vulnerabilities.

Sometimes Microsoft uses terms properly, like the discussion of denial of service as an "attack" in ch 17. Unfortunately, Microsoft's mislabeled STRIDE model supposedly outlines "threats" like "Denial of service." Argh -- STRIDE is just an inverted CIA AAA model, where STRIDE elements are attacks, not "threats." Microsoft also sometimes says "threat" when they mean "risk." The two are not synonyms. Consider this from p 87: "the only viable software solution is to reduce the overall threat probability or risk to an acceptable level, and that is the ultimate goal of 'threat analysis.'" Here we see confusing threat and risk, and calling what is really risk analysis a "threat analysis." Finally, whenever you read "threat trees," think "attack trees" -- and remember Bruce Schneier worked hard on these but is apparently ignored by Microsoft.

Overall, I thought WSC2E was very thorough and comprehensive, yet accessible and authoritative. The excuses in appendix B were priceless and almost enough to justify reading the whole book, along with the security principles in ch 3. I'm also remembering the great quote on p 55: "history is a vast early warning system." Just ignore the terminology in chapter 4 and elsewhere, and hope Microsoft uses Gary McGraw's "Software Security" to correct the vocabulary problems appearing in its developers.

So far, very good...

I am moving from FrontPage to Expression Web 4, so I'm not a total novice. I bought Sam's 24-hour handbook, and ran into snags that made me give up. So I bought this handbook by someone who clearly is an experienced author approved by Microsoft. I'm literally going "step by step" and am learning a lot, with a minimum of snags or unclear instructions. Once I've reached the end (it will take awhile because there are 500-plus pages... but luckily I am not under pressure to learn it overnight or in "24 hours"), I'll be pretty savvy, and I'll have a good reference book to use for my own site. A bonus is the online tutorial, plus the practice files you download and use in the lessons.

Too Technical Too Quick

I bought this book for someone else who gave up in chapter two. I picked it up, and if not for my years of experience would have given up in chapter two as well. I don't understand why he jumps right in to installing alternate PHP engines, and making the Development Server functional. Not only is such immediate depth unnecessary, in some cases the instructions either aren't right, or other cases unclear. In chapter one, we're installing alternate browsers, and adjusting settings that no normal user has an idea about. ...and all of this before we just simply create a site from a template. I know Website design can be as deep and complex as a person wants, but it doesn't have to start out that way. Simple web pages are, well, simple. But this book scared away the potential helper I thought I had lined up.

I found the book to be very helpful. I used FrontPage before switching to Expressions Web 4 and do find the new program to be a lot more difficult than FrontPage. Expressions is a much more fuller program and would take more time and effort to learn. The book was instrumental in making that process much easier.

Excellent

Been reading Tony Redmond and Paul Robichaux since Exchange 2000 / 2003. Their books are excellent. No exception to these ones. Combine it with J. Peter Bruzzese's online course on Pluarsight (used to be Train Signal), a virtual test environment and you'll be up and running. CBT Nuggets is highly recommended as well.

As a side note (if anyone is interested in my experience) on a dedicated server Hyper-V naturally works very well. On a workstation with Windows 8.1, which you need to reboot, put in power-save mode quite often, VMware Workstation is a much better choice. With Hyper-V at least I often lost network connections and once or twice ended up with corrupt VMs.

Very relevant Exchange information!

I've worked with Microsoft Exchange since 1996 as a consultant (Version 4.0) and Paul and Tony have been experts in the field most of that time. They have a wealth of knowledge on Microsoft Exchange and email and in particular I liked how Paul linked in details on the email clients and Lync integration. I wish the book included a case study of a customer migrating to Exchange 2013 for both a SMB and large firm as that would've completed this book as well as having a list of suggested web and blog sites for additional information.

This helped me pass the 70-341 more than the exam reference guide, and I didn't even read all of it. Well written and informative and I'll probably refer to this book often. As others have noted, the binding is at-risk. Go in knowing you have to treat it with kid-gloves and you probably will be OK.

Excellent combo with my favorite computer book ever and a good Windows Vista book

Don't know how you can go wrong with this kit. It includes my favorite computer book ever and a good Windows Vista book at about the same cost as the regular price of just one of the books alone. Now that's a fantastic value.

Anyone working with Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 will be happy to know the server book covers lots of advanced areas applicable to both. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 are the same platform after all. I would recommend this over any resource kit or training kit as the first choice to purchase. This is nearly 2700 pages!
