This book is a good updated to his first book on programming forms in C# 1.1. There have been alot of useful changes from C# 1.1 to 2.0. I just wish he would rewrite the first book with the 2.0 updates instead.

Good book, but I was expecting more...

A Very short (but objective) review:
If you are totally new to Windows forms, this book is a great option.
Otherwise, there are 3 chapters that wotrh while, speccialy the chapter about custom controls.
To be honest, I was expecting a lot more from this book, but anyway, its still a good one.

Self written Form code *does* show in Designer (contrary to some reviews here)

A major criticism I have seen of this book went as follows: "Unfortunately any forms which are built with code cannot then be manipulated with the GUI tools which defeats the intention of the makers of Visual Studio as a Rapid Application Developement (RAD) tool." This is just wrong, as far as I understand the review statement you just read, and this unfortunately may mislead people into not getting this resource (who would want their code not to show up in a designer, after all!). But form code that you write DOES show up in your designer. VStudio populates Form1.designer.cs with automated code when you drag and drop buttons and text boxes, etc, onto your designer. But if you add legitimate code to Form1.designer.cs (*as this book would teach you how to do*, [which by the way, this would be the only way to add controls programmatically!]), your code will immediately be reflected in your designer. Go ahead and try it (as I just did again to make sure): Make a simple form and drag on 2 buttons; then go to the automated code in Form1.designer.cs and duplicate one of those but name it button3 instead (just change the location point a little so it is not hidden right under the one you copied!). Maybe the reviewer had some legitimate criticisms but expressed them poorly, but as it stands, they are quite misleading. I for one am looking for getting greater depth in learning some controls and event handling, I think this book might take the cake (although I wish I knew if getting the authors older book would be better??). Cheers~

great book, publisher pulling 'airline junk fee' stunt

Ed Bott and Carl Siechert make a terrific team providing clear susinct technical writing. This book is no exception.

Having said that, I am gravely disappointed by the publisher's marketing move. All the Inside-Out books published by Microsoft Press (O'Reilly) used to come with a CD containing the full book in electronic form. Honestly, my collection of Inside-Out books gather dust on the shelves, but the searchable electronic copies are on my notebook harddrive whenever and wherever I need them. With THIS book, O'Reilly makes the electronic version of the book available as an online web site - but ONLY after you create an account with O'Reilly's Safari Library. You also get free 'Tips', which is a thinly disguised way to market you for more books. I don't always have fast Internet access, and sometimes such access might cost me as much as I paid for the book. If you want to put a copy of the book on your harddrive - pony up for a subscription - the cost of the book no longer includes local electronic storage rights.

It looks like O'Reilly is following the path blazed by the airlines by unbundling services and charging additional fees. Come on! Charge a fair price for the book and give me the electronic version! As a business traveller I'm waiting for the hotel industry to jump on board this sad trend and put coin operated toilet paper dispensers in their rooms.

Big change from 2007

To anyone who has purchased past series titles, definitely get this here. This book is several hundred pages thinner, and in the biggest change, there is no CD included. There has always been a CD with the Windows and Office versions in the past. Still a good book, but not so good a buy anymore.

Office 2010 Inside Out

Good basic overview and reference of Office 2010. On line access to electronic edition is not clear or easily accomplished, so my assessment relates to the printed book only. If you want to install and be guided through the most common features of Office 2010, this will do a good job. I've since purchased the Outlook Bible (written) and an electronic version of Excel to get to the detailed feature use I was looking for. I would have purchased individual Word, Excel, and Outlook publications as these programs were of the greatest interest to me and I was looking for more detail and application of feature examples than were provided.

Update was needed, partly fulfilled

My review consists of commentary for three areas of Microsoft's update: (1) the pros and cons of the manual, (2) stylistic considerations, and (3) the need for the manual.

The Pros and Cons of the Manual

Pros
1. It is affordable. I have yet to meet someone who paid the full purchase price for the previous edition, which approximated nearly $100 upon release.

2. It includes conventions for documenting newer technologies and content. The standards for documenting XML-based content and mobile technologies will probably be helpful to me.

3. Sensible prescriptions. Although many might disagree with specific style prescriptions, I find the general prescriptions straightforward and well-advised, as described in the section "Principles of Microsoft style."

Cons
1. It lacks an electronic version. This is no small detail as the printed book is not in color. I was specifically curious to find out how Microsoft prescribes documenting its new Windows 7 color scheme in its boxes (by default, the boundaries are translucent, showing whatever is behind it). Unfortunately, the book provides no enlightenment. However, I found an advance, sample chapter on the internet, and only then could I determine that Microsoft uses a silver color, and not the default scheme (unless, of course, they are simply using the default scheme over silver wallpaper, in which case the prescription is to change the default Windows wallpaper). Color is important, and that is just one reason why an electronic version is needed.

2. It is decidedly less readable than the previous version. The new edition does not employ spacing as well as its predecessor and the text is often quite small, especially in tables (other reviewers touting more white space are not reading extensively, but looking in cursory fashion at the boundaries of the pages, where this illusion has been successfully presented). It varies font size--often annoyingly so--but in no case is the text ever larger than in the previous version. Lastly, the sans-serif-based font used for the body text of this printed book does not serve it well (again, people often forget or do not know that the appearance of typeface in layout can often be inversely related to its readability, especially in print, as is the case here). This last point must have been an oversight in the printing (this is 430-page book, not a website), or Microsoft's faithfulness to Calibri is approaching a type of zealotry. Also, the paper is much thinner and cheaper in this version. One more: more graphics and non-textual presentation is needed here instead of so much text.

3. It is too long and includes irrelevant issues. Though the descriptions are concise, and even sparse, much of the content categories are unnecessary. This edition has grown considerably, but includes information on best practices for blogging, SEO optimization, as well as the propriety of shaking hands in international settings. These are all important, but are better treated in other publications for audiences with slightly different or broader roles than the technical communicator. It is better to treat core standards in depth than to present all possible issues with generic, possibly trite, recommendations.

Stylistic Considerations

On one hand, Microsoft has a tendency to over-prescribe a bit, in my opinion, on a few, trivial issues of style. For example, the new edition asserts that using the article "the" should be restored in all cases as it did in yore, and that the use of the pronoun "that" should likewise regain its status of being a fundamental syntactical ingredient. This, it asserts, helps with a world-wide audience. In reality, these are organization-specific decisions, with no real over-riding linguistic basis to account for the variety of contexts in which you may write.

On the other hand, disputations or debate of specific stylistic descriptions are generally not very useful or meaningful. Perspectives will always differ--and they always should--to some degree. For proficient communicators, the questions are mostly moot: after some time, you develop good judgment for what is needed in your organization, which should trump allegiances to published prescriptions.

Further, such questions are especially moot if you are a contractor with no tenure at any specific organization. In this case, the business reasons for an orthodox adherence to MMOS will almost surely outweigh any linguistic considerations for deviating from the manual. As experienced contractors know, those who hire technical communicators often do not have the most informed basis for judging their work, even if they think they do because they memorized a specific prescription from their college composition course. As a result, if you have no instruction otherwise, and if you rigidly follow the manual, any employer taking issue with your final choices is essentially taking issue with Microsoft. Whether you like it or not, Microsoft is the defacto (a word the manual expressly proscribes for being "non-English") authority for Windows-based products, and even for software documentation in general. So you can end your disputes with project managers, engineers, marketers, and management by simply quoting chapter and verse and then handing them the customer service telephone number to Microsoft Corporation (which is not toll-free). Encourage them to take up the good fight and effect global change. No one can genuinely criticize you for following these recommendations, absent any others. You will need the latest edition of MMOS on hand to keep this argument tight.

Overall, I find the stylistic prescriptions to be generally well-reasoned and sensible for the proper purposes and contexts of using a published standard.

The Need for the Manual

Microsoft has done an admirable, if not excellent, job in this endeavor to standardize technical publications. Over the span of decades now, they have demonstrated persistence and focus on an enterprise that probably has not provided much direct revenue. They have collected, organized, and fashioned important and useful conventions in our field. Their work has benefited their products, the products that interact with Windows, and the overall state of technical documentation.

Excluding outside factors, I rate this publication as 3.5/5 stars. But Amazon's options do not allow such parsing. Having to decide upon a whole number, I round up to 4 stars because of the good will and sustained efforts Microsoft has taken in this endeavor.

Kindle edition is awful

Although the book itself is fine, the Kindle format is just awful.

Tables are pasted randomly as grey IMAGES of doubtful quality and often are too small to read. You have to tweak the font size setting to get bigger scale, but then font becomes enormous while images become just slightly more readable :(

Dear Amazon, please, update the Kindle edition :(
It is inconvenient and impossible to read it the way it is right now.

Great Update to a Technical Publications Standard

As a technical writer, the Microsoft Manual of Style is the first style guide I reach for when I am a working on documentation project when the organization doesn't have a corporate style guide. Now, Microsoft has published the Microsoft Manual of Style, 4th Edition that includes some timely updates documenting how Microsoft's editorial style is adapting and changing to meet new technologies.

The Microsoft Manual of Style is a soup to nuts guide to the Microsoft style for writing technical documentation. I like its holistic approach that includes principles of Microsoft Style, web content, international audience considerations, writing about user interface guidelines, and writing procedures. It rounds out with a well-documented usage dictionary. The Microsoft writers and editors behind this edition have put together a solid guide that can serve both experienced and novice writers alike even just to help resolve stylistic arguments during the writing and editing of documents. Some notable updates in this edition include how Microsoft handles writing about mobile phones, gestures, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and for international audiences.

Chapter 2 Content for the web could really benefit from some screen shot examples from Microsoft web properties to show examples. It also is light on Community-based content coverage. Sparing my feelings as a technical writer, I realize community provided content is playing a role in documentation and support. Unfortunately, I've had my issues with community provided content as a user seeking support online for technical issues. The body of practical knowledge on managing community provided content seems scant in my opinion and I was hoping to see some substantive guidance on editing and managing such content in this edition of the style guide.

The change in tone in this edition of the style guide is quite refreshing. While it is easy to nerd it up on what is right or wrong when it comes to writing style, this edition breaks down many stylistic decisions as Microsoft style versus Not Microsoft Style.

This latest edition also has a fresh new design, which is cool to see since the design of the last couple of editions seems to bleed together in my memory. There is more white space and a new font from previous editions, which makes adds a lot to the style guide.

I recommend the Microsoft Manual of Style because this edition has some nice and timely updates. Previous editions of the Microsoft Manual of Style have also served me well and the guide is helpful to writers and non-writers alike tasked to write technical documents. The guiding principles set out in this edition of the style guide can help writers of all experience levels.

Stop Searching. Begin here

I am one of those freaks who would look at a bezillion books before settling with one. (Talking about computer books ofcourse!). This is especially significant when it comes to XML because there is so much tech jargon out there & it is really hard find a book that does not get lost in the details & instead introduce us to the core right away. This book does exactly that. You will start writing decent xml right away.

The following will be helpful.

1. HTML knowledge (a little)

2. The concept of scripts

3. The concept of CSS

4. The concept of XML

When I say 'the concept of', I am only talking about a surface level, "Purpose of existence" kind. Even if you don't know anything about XML, you will be fine with this book.

The book gradually introduces the concepts & does a very neat job of explaining new ideas.

Good overview but sometimes confusing

I bought this book based on the reviews of the first edition. I generally like the book for its fast paced introduction to XML. However, I find some of the examples confusing and I do not like the way the author always has you jumping around to different pages for information. Furthermore, there are some pointers to other pages that are wrong. Also, alot of information is put in "sidebars". Some of these sidebars are multiple pages so I do not understand their purpose. I find myself referring to Holzner's "Inside XML" a good amount of the time for clarification. If you want a quick and dirty intro to XML, this book is for you. If you need to learn XML, you will want Holzner's book in addition to this. Holzner gives you best practices as you read whereas this book does not. For example, this book uses the MIXED format for declaring elements within DTD's. However, Holzner does not recommend this and tells you why.

For Administrators of Windows XP Professional or Windows 2003 Server Software

I purchased this book to help me create a more secure limited user environment for Windows XP Home which would also work with legacy software. After purchase I found out that the author assumes the user is administering either Windows XP Professional or Windows 2003 Server software for large groups of users. The author details how to make mass registry changes using the Group Policy Editor which is not available in Windows XP Home. This book is probably the best resource available for its intended readers. While it was not intended for use with Windows XP Home, I've gained enough knowledge from the book to be able to successfully find on the internet the writings of other authors who have already worked out the registry hacks of XP Home needed to accomplish for its administrators one user at a time the same result as that obtained for those who administer large groups of users.

Not as "in-depth" a registry learning tool as I anticipated

The back cover of this book says the following; "Understand how the Registry works -- and customize Windows to run the way you want". Also; "Get the in-depth information you need to modify -- and seamlessly manage -- the Windows registry". I purchased this book in the hope of becoming thoroughly adept in UNDERSTANDING HOW TO EDIT my own registry key values. The systems registry should not be manually altered unless you understand the ramifications of what you are doing. One wrong hex value can cause a lot of computer problems, (although System Restore can take care of most of these issues if a restore point is first created). The book may be fine for I.T. professionals but for those who want to take an intimate look inside the registry in order to examine and learn to become proficient about its innermost workings, I do not recommend this book. Less than 30 pages, (pp 3-31), cover the "Learning the Basics" of the registry. I would have liked more information such as interpreting the registry Hex values using a common Hex Editing tool and how to make MY OWN intelligent alterations based on newfound knowledge gained from reading the book. There are several registry "Hacks" in the book but it's really just a matter of copying values from the book. You aren't really told what is actually taking place when hex values are changed, (EG. Are we changing a boolean value and/or how do we know which hex values are available to be changed, etc.)There is a lack of in depth explanations on topics that I think were very relevant. I paid $64.99 CDN for this book at the time of my purchase. I don't believe that I received fair value in return. I know the price has decreased somewhat since then and because of that, it may be a worthwhile investment for those who would like some useful information about Windows Registry. Again, just remember the book is targeted towards I.T. professionals. The three stars are mainly because of what I see to be a great lack of informative in-depth content, and very brief and somewhat vague explanations. I was left hanging and had to consult other media to find answers about some of the topics which I read in this book.

No CD with this book?

The "" for this book, and various places in the book, mention an accompanying CD, but none is listed in the order or shipping papers and none was received. As for the book, it seems technically competent but does not provide the kind of understanding that would make me literate in the Registry and its workings, so any changes I make will be more limited than hoped. It seems good for installing Windows in various environments and servers, but I'm just a Home user.

An excellent IT book

I wish that all the books dealing with IT were written like this one. Ed Bott really explains everything in a very,very clear way.Without dumbing it down or assuming that you already know everything,like other writers...Most of the time when I read a book about Windows I get sleepy after a while.Not with this one.His books(like the one about Outlook)keep you interested.On top you will find sometimes information that you will not find in any other book.After reading several of his books I have no problem buying his next one,about Vista or whatever without even seeing it before.

Incomplete, inaccurate, and poorly cross referenced

I bought this to set up a network between Win XP Pro and Win 2000 Pro. The first instructions I looked for turned out to be inaccurate, incomplete, and poorly cross-referenced or highlighted. The book's procedure and illustrations for the Network Setup Wizard do not match what Windows XP Pro actually does. Nor does the network setup disk work in Windows 2000, though the book says to use it with Win 2000. VERY disappointed.

About the Author
MARCO RUSSO is a software consultant and trainer based in Italy who focuses on Windows development and Business Intelligence solutions, including data warehouse relational and multidimensional design. He is the coauthor of Introducing Microsoft LINQ and Programming Microsoft LINQ (Microsoft Press), along with several other books about Microsoft .NET and SQL Server Analysis Services.

ALBERTO FERRARI is a consultant and trainer for the BI development area with the Microsoft suite for Business Intelligence. His main interests are in the methodological approaches to the BI development and works as a trainer for software houses that need to design complex BI solutions.

Great book on PowerPivot and DAX

I like the book for two reasons.
First, while explaining how PowerPivot works, it also explains many BI concepts (OLAP cubes, sql joins, normalization) which are not necessarily known to every excel user. However, these help to maximize the usefulness of PowerPivot.
Second, it also shows what you can do with DAX, the new formula language of PowerPivot, which is quite impressive but not so easily mastered, especially here the book is a tremendous help.

Leaf-Level Book Review: `Microsoft PowerPivot for Excel 2010'

Being a member of the Analysis Services Insiders group is one of my favorite parts about being a Microsoft SQL/BI MVP. The Insider forums are locked down to select individuals and provide Microsoft experts with a venue to exchange ideas, thoughts, and technical solutions among one another. As a result, overtime I have begun to know both Marco & Alberto, and when I learned they were both working on a collaborative PowerPivot book it peaked my interest. Furthermore, when I learned that the book would have a focus on DAX my interest increased yet again. I received an early copy of the printed manual and over the past 24 hours I have torn thru the book's newly printed pages eager to see what my fellow colleagues across the pond created.

Microsoft SQL Server PowerPivot is an extremely powerful and yet diverse Self-Service BI (SSBI) toolset. There are aspects of PowerPivot that are more slanted towards information workers (PowerPivot for Excel) while other aspects are intended purely for IT Pros (PowerPivot for SharePoint). The key decision for software-centric book authoring "is it better to drill down on a subset of a larger software product's features or provide complete coverage with less details" still applies today. Marco Russo and Alberto Ferrari have clearly decided to focus on the PowerPivot for Excel experience with an advanced exploration of DAX, PowerPivot's best in class information worker expression language.

The book's key driver for purchase is that it is authored by seasoned Microsoft BI experts who exploit PowerPivot for Excel's analytical capabilities to the max. Who better to teach information workers about the advanced analytical capabilities of PowerPivot for Excel (which is driven internally by the in-memory Analysis Services Vertipaq engine) than those who've used past incarnations of similar technology for similar purposes? While I agree that PowerPivot for Excel 100% does not require information workers to be familiar with Analysis Services concepts, the author's background serves them well for the aspects of PowerPivot they choose to attack.

The manual begins with a nice introduction on classic Excel Pivot Tables and then demonstrates how PowerPivot for Excel clearly overcomes the limitations of the older pivot table & VLOOKUP technology. In chapters two and three the book explores PowerPivot for Excel introductory features including an introduction to DAX. The authors then introduce you to the concept of PowerPivot data models in chapter four with the loading of PowerPivot data models being covered in chapter five. Chapter six is where the authors expertise really begins to shine with a treatment of DAX's Evaluation Context and specifically the CALCULATE function.

Chapter seven hones in on using DAX for common time intelligence calculations. Date and time calculations are the crux of any analytical solution. Common expressions such as year-to-date, year-over-year, and beginning/closing balances are covered in detail. You are then taken into a chapter that shows you how to master Excel 2010 Pivot Tables including Classic Pivot Tables, OLAP Pivot Tables, and PowerPivot Pivot Tables.

Chapters nine and ten focus on DAX and data model patterns. SSBI users will find both of these chapters are extremely well tailored for them addressing common analytical challenges such as ratio calculations, ranking calculations, banding, and even a demonstration of how to overcome unsupported relationships with DAX. The manual concludes with chapter eleven covering the publishing of PowerPivot for Excel workbooks including a primer on PowerPivot for SharePoint via SharePoint data refresh settings & configuration.

Microsoft PowerPivot for Excel 2010 is without question the best book on PowerPivot for Excel I've read to date. The authors have executed well on a no-holds-barred approach to exploiting PowerPivot for Excel and everything that the client-experience can provide users. Both information workers and business intelligence professionals alike who use or intend to use PowerPivot for Excel should consider the book as required reading. Additionally, due to the sheer volume of DAX coverage, readers should retain the book as a must-have DAX reference.

About the Author

Richard Hundhausen is the president of Accentient, a company that helps software development teams understand and leverage Application Lifecycle Management and Scrum tools and practices. He has over 30 years of software development experience and over 20 years of training experience. He is a Microsoft Regional Director, Visual Studio ALM MVP, and author of several books and courses, including Microsoft's Professional Scrum Developer program. Richard grew up in southern Idaho, lived in Germany for a couple of years, and moved back to Boise in 2001. He enjoys playing soccer, writing code, and being a husband and father of five.

Scrumptious

As a Scrum geek, I really enjoyed this book. While I am no longer a hands-on developer, I am a certified ScrumMaster and work with teams in the Microsoft stack. Utilizing my existing knowledge of Scrum, combined with Richard's expertise in both Scrum and ALM utilizing VS/TFS 2012, this book came together in one wonderful symphony. It was easy to read, easy to comprehend (much like Scrum), and provides prescriptive, easy to implement steps on how to run your project utilizing the Microsoft's ALM products. So as mentioned, this book is not just for the hands-on developer, but extremely beneficial to anyone on the "development team" (by Scrum definition).

While there are similar books for TFS 2010, the refresh for 2012 is quite nice, as there are some major enhancements. Richard does a great job at utilizing these enhancements and pulling them all together in this collection.

Not just theory, but also a lot of pragmatism and practice mixed with humor and real-world examples

I've taken my Professional Scrum Developer training from Richard last December, just around the time his book was released. And I must say that Richard's knowledge on both the theroreticalities *and* the practicalities of Scrum is exceptional. This is well reflected in his book.

There is a very nice mix of theory, process and technology as well as the all important human side to software development. Given that there are so many open source tools, add-ons and other libraries that can help implementing Scrum and extend Visual Studio, you will not find a lot of in-depth discussion on the non-Microsoft solutions, but Richard does provide enough information to know where to look for more information and to have an idea of what's out there.

The first couple of chapters go into the theory of scrum and the practice without the use of tools. These chapters are great for any reader, both management, developer or just stakeholder to learn more about the process when applied to general (.NET) development.

Then the planning elements are discussed, both from the Web Access, Excel, Test Manager and other tooling point of view. These topics are still great for any reader, as long as they use TFS once in a while.

Then there are a number of chapters that dive into the tools and technology. Richard discusses the Visual Studio features that help any Agile team, Test Driven Development in general and Continuous Integration and Deployment.

The last chapters dive into the hardest part of scrum, continuous improvement, inspect and adapt and the general prevention of flaccid scrum. These chapters are important for everyone who has been doing scrum for a while and wants to up their game. As well as for teams starting out with scrum so that they know what they might expect on their path towards a high performing scrum team.

I really like the balance between real world examples, humor, tips and tricks and short side steps that provide additional perspectives from other Professional Scrum Developers, Masters and Trainers. There is not just one way to become a high performing scrum developer. We're all on our own journey towards continuous improvement. This book is great to bring along for the ride.

Tips, advice, and anecdotes for every team

Richard easily had another book in his back pocket filled with tips, advice and anecdotes on both Scrum and Visual Studio 2012. Instead, we can all appreciate Richard's commentary while learning how to best leverage Visual Studio & Team Foundation Server 2012 with the Scrum framework. I now recommend this book not only for teams just getting started with the Scrum & VS pairing, but also as a reference for those continuous improvement experiments experienced teams choose during their Retrospective.
