If you think you are ready for the exam and are not sure what is going to be on the test, this is a great book. This is NOT to learn from if you do not know Microsoft Office, it is for someone who believes they know the material but don't know what they don't know.

Microsoft Office Certifications

I am a certified expert on Word 2002, and lately took a class at community college about what is new in Word 2007. I got hooked on the new Ribbon interface. I asked the teacher about any good books for the new certifications for Office 2007, and she recommended this one. This book is concise and direct. It is an excellent resource for anyone already familiar with Office who wants certification, and also great for everyone else who wants to see the features available in Office 2007.

Little more than basic security information

I purchased the book in order to get some depth on the inner workings of code access security and version management as it pertains to strongly named assemblies. In neither case did the book offer anything more than a rehash of the documentation -- and not in a particularly well thought out or organized manor.

Worthy of five stars

Security is becoming an essential topic and there is a lot of information available already, but up until now, no reference that brings it together for the VB programmer. I was after a book that gave me the basic knowledge for writing secure apps. This book is great.
Ed Robinson and Mike Bond have previously written about VB migration. I often find that authors like the rest of us mortals grow in our jobs and this book is very well written. It starts out with the basics, and gets more advanced as the book goes on. I like the fact that the book has loads of example code which is designed to be cut-and-pasted into your applications.
As a final note, I think this is definitely one of the best MSPress .NET books. Unlike the other security books, which seem to be rushed to be first to market, this books is well thought out, and created by people who know VB.NET as well as knowing about security. This brings security down to earth, and is more relevant to the VB programmer than anything else I've read on security. This book is worthy of five stars.

What an eye-opener

When I first saw this book, I thought "How can they write a whole book on security?" So out of intellectual curiosity, I started flipping through the pages. It was like getting kicked in the stomach, not because it was wrong, but because it was right. It made me fundamentally re-think how I write my code and really shifted my whole mental image. Too many times developers think that if an app does what users want and runs fast and is reliable, that's all there is to it. Not anymore. The most killer app written wouldn't impress anyone if it got hacked and cost them a lot of money. There days, too many people are trying to hack your stuff, and having your app busted is no less 'bad' than having a logic flaw miscalculate tons of money. Moreoever, security breaches often make the headlines so it's a lose/lose for everyone if your security is breached.
The good news... buy this book, follow their guidelines religously, keep up to date with security issues, and sleep easy at night.

Get your training on

Are you an IT rookie or Pro looking to get a firm understanding of how to implement Windows 8 in the enterprise? Or are you a geek who just wants to know how Windows 8 works? If you're in any of the two mentioned groups you will get a firm understanding of Windows 8 due to the excellent writing, questions, and lab exercises in this book. How does this book differ from other books on Windows 8? I think it differs in the writing style and the structure of the book. I have read other books on Windows 8 that are focused on tips and tricks; focused on the expert IT pro; and one that covered every "bit" of Windows 8. Yes, those other books have their purpose and that's fine, but this book is aimed at "teaching" the reader Windows 8 from the "surface" level to the advanced level without going off on unnecessary tips and theory.

The authors clearly know their subject, but they don't beat you down with it. Also, the authors offer real-world examples and tell the reader what is necessary for learning Windows 8. I really like that. When I read a training guide, I only want to know how the hardware/software functions and how to make it work for my environment. When I want to read the theory of the technology I go to a different kind of book. I like that this book at the beginning of each lesson tells the reader what he or she should know by this point, what is required for the lesson suggestions and labs, and that at the end of the lesson is a lesson summary. Throughout each lesson are real-world examples and quick hits of information related to the topic of the lesson.

Are there any cons to this book? I gave an honest consideration to this and I did think of a con. I think there could have been more questions at the end of each lesson. Each lesson ended with 2 to 5 questions. While there could have been more, I don't think this does any damage to the book. The amount of questions asked still help the reader to reflect on the lesson learned so it's not a con that takes away a star.

While this book lets you know in the beginning it's not intended as a sole source for the Windows 8 exam, it does cover some of the required topics for the Window 8 exam so this is a great addition to your study tools for the exam. I think the lab exercises will help you as well.

Anyway, rambling aside, grab this book to learn about Windows 8. In my mind it's currently the best book available to train you on how to use Windows 8. Hey, I bet you'll even have fun doing it.

Very helpful

This book is for informative of all the Windows 8 features. I'm only about 1/4 into the book but it gives great detail about all the new functions. Just don't rely on this book to be able to pass the MCSA but it will better your knowledge and prepare you for the exam. Official books don't release until May but this will get you by until then.

Doesn't help with the test

From a perspective on getting acquainted with windows 8 and learning some of the new features it is decent. This will not help you pass the 687 test, there were no questions from this book on the test, there were mistakes all over the place. Pretty disappointed

Administering Guide for Better Job Performance

Every so often I'll come across a rare gem of a book. It might be a book about woodworking, DNS, Arp spoofing or even ways to make a good bean soup. Administrating Windows Server 2012 R2 Training Guide by Orin Thomas is one of those rare finds. I don't work much with servers and I thank the lord for that. However, it is amazing to learn what a difficult job that really is. The book isn't really a study guide to prepare you for the 70-411 certification. Orin Thomas seems to have written this book for those of you who probably already have that credential but need a great operators manual.

If you are a sys admin with a few years under your weary eyes and you are running Windows Server 2012, this book is for you. It even says so in the beginning of the book. Yet, the contents start you from the beginning of setting of a server and lead you all the way through the steps of setting up accounts, creating policies, maintaining/housecleaning and branching off into many sophisticated ways to manage your job responsibilities.

As with all Microsoft publications the guide is clear, clean and concise (that was a joke for those of you who never had to read any of their security publications before TechNet came along). Mr. Thomas turned his years of sweat and blisters as a sys admin into an easy to understand manual for those running Windows Servers. He approaches the reader with caution by letting them know that there are several ways to do a given task and the reader is free to choose their pain level. He offers the reader his own opinion on ways to accomplish difficult or time consuming tasks with hints as to why you will want to follow his advice instead of making your life more difficult.

In other words, he doesn't tell the reader that they have to do a task one specific way but if the reader wants to do it another way, he give them straight advice as to why they should follow his method. That is what I love about the book. The guide is overflowing with mentoring tips to ease the job of administering Windows Servers 2012.

Take chapter two Managing account policies and services accounts, as an example. Passwords are painful to work with. Sys admins have been known to make policies either too stringent or too lax. Nobody in an organization is ever happy with password policies, more-so the people who set up those policies and the help desk personnel who have to reset forgotten passwords. Chapter two is written with what appears to be many years of experience in the area of trying to make everyone happy regarding passwords. I felt Mr. Thomas's pain as he gently nudges the reader to be cautious when establishing password policies.

The author provided excellent tips and outstanding recommendations on which settings should be used and why those were the best options. Only a person with several years of people complaining to them would truly appreciate the sound decisions he proposes (those weary eyed ones). If you happen to be recently 70-411 certified, heed the information in this book. Think of this guide as your roadmap to a successful career as a server administrator. It has plenty of helpful material to help you study for the certification but I felt it serves a higher purpose as a “How to do your job” guide.

This book alone will not be enough to get you to pass the 70-411 examination and the authors makes that quite clear throughout the guide. I was surprised to find out how much Windows server installations, configurations, maintenance and supervision relied on the command line interface otherwise known as Windows Powershell. What happened to GUI? There are default settings for everything with Windows Server 2012 but no network is ever a cut and paste network. There is plenty of settings that have to be manually adjusted and Mr. Thomas goes through all of them in great detail. He also explains alternatives to his methods as well as the consequences or possible outcomes of not adhering to his suggestions.

The guide provides small segments for each chapter topic, sort of like hit and runs. He shoots the important information to the reader, gives examples and instructions for completing the task and then summarizes what he just wrote about. Next, he reenforces the subtopic knowledge by giving the reader a couple of basic questions. Then, he is on to the next subtopic. Once the full task is covered, he goes into exercises that follow step by step on how to perform the task that was just read.

The reader is expected to either set up a virtual server using a trial version of Windows Server 2012 or the reader is already administering a server. Either way, the reader is walked and talked through every function they can expect to see as part of their role as a sys admin. The book doesn't just focus on setting up a single server, rather each chapter tells the reader how to run all types of servers and all sorts of functions. I had no idea that a service could have it's own account. That's in the book too.

One of my favorite parts of each chapter is where Mr. Thomas provides a segment called Real World. Each of these segments cover mistakes most administrators make, why they make those mistakes and how the reader can avoid the pain of making those same mistakes. Again, this book was written by someone who has experienced years of pain as a sys admin and has taken notes on every one of those painful mistakes.

I heard that high levels of stress will shorten your life. Save your own life and buy this book.

Read it, then read it again. Keep it in your car or hide it in your desk so others around you don't know where you are getting all this wisdom from. If you keep it in your car, you can run out to your vehicle when a problem arises and come back to the office with a brilliant solution. If you place it on your desk where others might see it, put a fake book cover over it so that others will think you are a Windows 2012 server guru. This guide will reduce your chances of having a stress-based heart attack and increase your pay scale, I would almost guarantee except that I'm neither a doctor nor your employee.

The information aside of that is great but I took less notes as I knew the ...

I have read all but last two chapters so far. I noticed multiple sloppy typos on the multiple choices in every single chapter where they mark incorrect for ones that are correct based off reading. As if they modifed a a word in question without updating choices/answers afterwards. In that regard it was not as well done as the first book. The information aside of that is great but I took less notes as I knew the material from 10 yrs experience in server. Its been a much easier read for me.

Good overview, but make sure to go BEYOND the book

This book is a great start to preparing for exam 70-462. You get a DVD with practice questions and practice exams, and you also get a voucher that take 15% off the price of the exam registration fee. The book is not big and not too small. It has good detail about each topic, and also has good walkthroughs that you can (and should) practice on a test machine. However, it is VERY important that you also review the MSDN links that are provided in every section of every chapter. If you rely solely on the book for your preparation, you will not have the full details about the subject matter. Microsoft exams are notorious for having questions on obscure little details that you might not encounter in your everyday work with the tested software. In addition, as the book points out, the exams will be updated as service packs and hot fixes are released. The only way to get the updated information is to go out on the web and review MSDN and other sites.

My only criticism of this book, and it's a criticism of many exam guides, is that the review questions aren't detailed enough. If Microsoft is going to test us on obscure details, then their review questions should be detailed as well. I've found I have to write my own review questions to be assured of having a sufficient level of knowledge to pass the exam. I shouldn't have to do that, since that's the whole point of buying an exam guide.

Other than that, it's a good book and worth the price of purchase.

Poorest 2012 Training Kit

Not a recommended purchase! Frankly, while this book does have a lot of information contained within, it's too poorly written, organized, and presented to be of any really help on the test. What is worse is that it is absolutely of no use beyond the test - while the 70-461 and 70-463 Trainging Kits provide some methodology guidance, and real world examples of implementing their content, this book is nothing more than a jumble of MSDN links, and screenshots.

What it does well: Covered everything I saw on the exam. I thought this was the easiest of three MCSA tests - there were instances where only one of the options provided was even remotely possible. So in many ways, the very basic introduction this book gives to the topics is enough to get you through the test.

Where it fails (deep breath): As mentioned, the book is a hodgepodge of screenshots, step by step guides, and actual feature descriptions. Admittedly for some this may be great - I prefer to read about the features, then use them. The book briefly defines a feature, then step by step, where to click to accomplish the task.
Next, the screenshots are screenshots - there's no attempt to edit or enhance them. There are no notes, no highlighted, circled, or zoomed areas. They seem to assume you're following along on your own SQL instance... which has the same screens they print in low res all over the place.

Information is repeated constantly. A chapter starts with an overview of features, then repeats the same information a couple pages later, hardly reworded. Rarely is any concept expanded upon, never do you get a recommendation on when something is worthwhile or when it's helpful. The new SQL 2012 Extended Events got a paragraph. One paragraph.

**Worst** Terminology isn't consistent, and information is contradictory:
Pg. 358 "If you need more than one listener for an availability group, it is possible to create additional listeners by using Windows PowerShell or the Failover Cluster Manager console."
Pg.364 (Lesson Summary) "You can have only one listener per availability group."

You get better explanations, and graphics that are actually helpful (not snipping tool) with the MSDN documentation (diagrams! imagine that, a depiction of the architecture of an availability group).

Recommendation: If you want to actually learn anything then skip this book and read the MSDN docs. If you have experience with prior versions, you have to read less of the MSDN docs.

Just check the test page - it lists what is tested, and what percentage of the test it constitutes.
If you really have no experience, I'm concerned about the book's accuracy, but it does give you a wealth of walk through exercises and guides. It does do that! But again, you'll have to go else where to find out *why* you'd go through that list of steps.

Final note! Search for Hyper-V disk differencing and save time and tens of gigs of HDD space when setting up the practice environment (yea they don't cover that either).

Not a Bad book, just nowhere near what you'd need to pass the test.

I just came from my second taking of the 70-462 exam. This time I passed it with a score of 788. A month ago I failed it with a score of 678. (700 is passing) So at 50 questions each, I have 100 questions fresh in my mind as I write this.

This book certainly has good info in it and it mostly covers every subject I saw on the exam with the exception of a couple of Azure questions. So, why not 4 or 5 stars? For 1 thing, the exam tips sprinkled throughout the book were worthless. I made a point of knowing all the material behind every exam tip thinking that would cover me for maybe 3 or 4 questions and after each test I went back though this book and other than the few "generic" tips, the specific ones were not on either of my tests.

Probably the biggest thing that annoyed me about this book was that I bought it after watching a youtube video by one of the authors boB Taylor from a Teched conference where he spends 90 minutes going over exam prep material for this exam. In that talk he pitched this book and made all kinds of erroneous statements about what would be on the test.

Things like:

All potential answers must be valid solutions. No made up syntax/options allowed. FALSE

Very few of the "Choose all that apply" type questions. FALSE I think I had about a dozen on each test.

Maybe 1 question on Mirroring since it's being replaced by AG's. FALSE Probably 5 or 6 questions on each exam.

The format of the exam was not what he talked about either.

Sitting for the exam the first time it really threw me off to see all these things (and a few more) that Mr. Expert insisted wouldn't be part of the exam.

Overall, this book will help but for me it wasn't enough to pass the exam.

I also used a CBT Nuggets subscription to study for this. I'd recommend that over this book by far.

An invaluable reference guide for all roles involved in software development

I became a business analyst in 2004 and a co-worker suggested that I read Karl Wieger's books, Software Requirements, 2nd Edition and More About Software Requirements Thorny Issues and Practical Advice. That was the BEST professional advice I've ever received. The books have been integral in helping me to understand the many different skill sets, techniques, and best practices required to do a great job as an analyst.

So when I heard that Karl and Joy were co-writing the 3rd Edition of Software Requirements I was elated! The information provided in the new book is current, easy to understand, and so very relevant. Real-life examples and humor have been weaved throughout the book which makes it a very interesting read.

I recommend this book as an essential reference guide for anyone involved in software development, not just analysts. All roles should know about business analysis as it relates to system design and software development. This will be a book that you will refer to time after time.

Required reading for project managers, but don't forget the coffee

There are a great many friendlier, funnier, more engaging software requirements books on the market. There are very few books as comprehensive and concise as this one. Yes, concise. I know it's huge. It just covers that much information.

It provides an analysis of stakeholders and functional vs nonfunctional requirements that was surprisingly informative. We throw those terms around all the time, but rarely consider a formal definition. This book looks at a variety of options, and the one you choose will guide your thinking throughout requirements analysis and harvsting.

It covers everything you need to establish your requirements for the waterfall method, though it features substantial information on agile. If you are new to agile, and need ideas on how to gather the backlog, or if you've been using a while but don't feel the backlog is as complete as it should be, grab this book and a notepad. It covers a host of sources that are easy to overlook

It is very, very dry reading, which is the only reason it is four stars and not five. I found it hard to stay focused once in a while, and needed a caffeine boost to keep going. There is an attempt in the beginning to be humorous, but that is quickly lost. It is a little poorly organized. The topic sentence does not always guide the reader to the topic under discussion. You'll need to reset your focus a few times during the book, but it's worth it. The first two editions are often considered required reading for project managers, and the third lives up to that august reputation.

The Gold Standard got even better!

Over the years, when a novice business analyst (or someone with experience handling requirements) has asked me for a good reference, I’ve sent them to Karl Wiegers’ books. This third edition of Software Requirements is the gold standard I’ll now be recommending. Karl and Joy have done an excellent job of enriching the already-great material from the prior version, giving readers an understanding of why solid requirements are needed and illustrating practical techniques for developing and managing requirements. In addition to commonplace stories illustrating the concepts, they provide clear and useful examples of all the techniques. Practical, complete examples are essential to understanding methods an analyst hasn’t used before; like many of the subject matter experts we encounter, we “know it when we see it!”

The book is written in a flow that helps an analyst see what needs to be done from the point when an idea is first considered, to when it becomes the subject of a project, all the way through the project completion. Not all techniques work well with all types of projects, though, so the book includes sections describing adaptations of the material discussed and the specific needs of particular types of projects. They cover agile, enhancement and replacement, packaged solution, outsourced, business process automation, business analytics, and embedded and real-time projects.

While it’s a healthy-sized tome at more than 600 pages, the book is well organized and specific topics are easy to access individually. Most business analysts would benefit from reading it cover to cover, though, at least once!
