Far Inferior to SQL 2005 70-431 Equivalent Text

The Microsoft Training Kit text for SQL Server 2005 exam 70-431 (for which Hotek was a contributor, but not primary author) is one of the best technical books I have ever come across. I have read every page at least twice, some sections several times. It covers a wealth of complex material in an organized, well-written manner. I hoped the SQL 2008 version would be an update of the SQL 2005 text, adding coverage for new or updated SQL 2008 features.

Alas, the SQL 2008 edition has been completely rewritten, with Hotek as the only author. I have read the first 100 pages and intend to read the entire text, but am not happy. The content is poorly organized, poorly edited and flat-out incorrect on some important points. (Errors regarding multiple instances were commented on by earlier reviewers. This error was not just stated once, but was repeated.) In more than one end-of-section mini-quiz, the questions are for material not covered in that section.

Hotek claims, more than once, to have worked on "millions of databases". Huh? If he worked on a different database every hour, and worked a ten-hour day for 300 days per year, that would total out to 30,000 databases a year, or 300,000 over ten years. Mike would have to have worked over thirty years to get close to his first million databases!

That said, Hotek is a really smart guy, with tons of SQL Server experience. His contributions to the SQL 2005 text were interesting and useful. Unfortunately, his expertise does not translate to authorship of books like this, and he has been poorly served by his technical editors (if there were any) at Microsoft Press.

NOTE: I submitted the above two-star review on March 19, 2009. I subsequently completed the entire book, some sections more than once, but found no reason to upgrade the rating, either for content or editing. Most of the questions on the Transcender practice exam cannot be answered using Hotek's book. My advice to those prepping for the 70-432 exam is to use the excellent text for the 70-431 exam, augmented by study of new SQL 2008 features like filestreaming and policies. Good luck!

Solid test engine, but book needs editing

As previous reviewers have already pointed out, there are a plethora of inaccuracies with the SQL Server 2008 edition comparisons in Chapter 1. For this, I'd suggest referencing Microsoft's edition comparison list at [...]

Other than Chapter 1, the information in this book is there but a bit thin. I also noticed the lesson reviews tend to "jump ahead", so to speak. For example, the lesson review for Chapter 6 Lesson 2 is on page 144. It gives a scenario about moving orders older than 30 days from the orders table with the least amount of performance hit. It's a 2 part answer and one involves the SWITCH operator. The book doesn't explicitly delve into SWITCH until Chapter 6 Lesson 4 (page 151).

The practice test engine, on the other hand, is one of the best I've ever seen from MeasureUp (their test engines are usually solid anyways). There were a lot of real-life scenario-type questions on there that were scarce in the book. It was also very good about pointing you to good reference materials for each question (some of which were obviously not the book). I took the exam yesterday and passed on the first try, but firmly believe it was the MeasureUp test engine that put me over the top.

In most cases, the practice exams are supplemental to the book. In this case, however, the book seems to be the supplement. Overall, I found this book to be okay at best. If you're wise, you'll do outside referencing anyways... while both on the job and studying. With that said, there's probably better material out there for 70-432. I must give this one an average review because the Chapter 1 epic fail, in particular, just cannot go unpunished :(

MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-432)

It has taken me a while to come back and review this book. The reason it has taken so long is because there is not much positive to say about the book.

First, the book feels very poorly edited. By the time I was done reading the book, red pen in hand, I felt more like an editor than someone studying a subject. I bought the book to learn about SQL Server 2008 but even I was able to find several factual errors. The most annoying errors were the numerous places where you are asked to answer questions about subjects that had not yet been covered, and at times never covered. This was not only present in the book, but also in the practice software. Eventually, it seemed rather pointless to attempt the practice software until after reading the whole book, even though it allowed for chapter specific practice. Beyond that there were also more grammatical and composition errors than one would like to see in a textbook.

Second, this book throws a lot of information at you and it tries to explain what that information is good for; however, it often reads more like Microsoft's SQL Server Books Online than a teaching manual. This being the case there is little reason to buy what is given away for free.

What I did like about the book was the real life examples. Putting in a scenario to help you understand what can be done with what you are learning is great. I only wish the book had many more of these.

For the most part I trusted that the author knew what he was talking about, despite the errors. From reading the book I could tell that this guy knows his stuff, unfortunately, when I was finished I did not feel like that knowledge was passed on very well. This was after reading each chapter two and sometimes three times, plus taking notes.

In contrast, I just finished another Microsoft Press book, which I found immensely helpful, easy to understand, and with just one reading I retained 80% or more of the content. With that in mind I felt better about my assessment of this book. The difference is night and day.

Bottom line, I would not recommend this book. You can find a list of what you will be tested on from Microsoft's website, and from there you can use the Microsoft Books Online and some other Microsoft Press books to cover what you do not know.

The weakest of the MSPress core books

After taking the test, I'm surprised that more people haven't taken the time to point out this book's flaws. I used the MSPress books to study exclusively for the 290 and 291 exams, and did fine on both. After reading this book, I thought this exam would be a piece of cake. After taking some practice tests, I realized that much more material would be required.

The book nurses you through subnetting and basic DNS, just like the 291 book does - possibly even at a slower pace. The topics which are really heavily covered on the exams are introduced, but barely explored. How did the author fit so little substance into so many pages?

It's especially disappointing after the 291 book, which is right on target with the exam. This books acts as if you've never heard of TCP/IP or DNS. Maybe this is Microsoft's philosophy that you can take any one individual test and become an MCP. But honestly, who takes the 293 alone? It makes no sense to waste half the book explaining things that people preparing for this test should already know.

So the short summary is, if you're picking and choosing which MSPress titles to use in your MCSE study, this is the one to skip.

By the way, I'm always wary of reviews by bitter test-takers who have just failed and are PO'd. So for the record, I passed.

Great if only for the evaluation

After passing both Comptia criteria electives, MCSE was next in line. I chose these books for the 6 month evaluation copy of Server 2003 which is indubitably essential 'hands on' before the required examinations.
Unfortunately these books are full of intellectual goobledegook - not geekspeak. I believe this was a deliberate attempt to confuse the reader. 2003's nature is an intuitive NOS - not that complicated.
To be fair it is stated that you need over 12 months experience of installing maintaining Windows in order to start this course: yet from the start the authors fall short of any explanations of the "what's and why's" of 2003 environment; instead they compiled a short list of facts.
In comparison the previous Windows 2000 server manuals [by microsoft] demand the same credentials yet are packed with charts details and easy to understand explanations. I contrasted each chapter of Windows manuals, ONLY the 2000 manuals are self explanatory.
Note: 2003 is just a souped up version of 2000...
This is given 3 stars, for its evaluations cd - 6 months of hands on will prepare me for the Windows Server 2003 exams. Also its logical step by step instructions covering all areas from setup and advanced configurations.
I will need other books before taking the MCSE though...

Uhhh....

I'm still trying to get through the first book 2 years later. But what's the hurry? I can always start my training tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow...

Seriously, though, these books look a lot like the ones I used to study for my first MCSE, on NT4. Full of most of what you need to pass the exam, plus a lot of junk you don't. I think they're an attempt to trick/force you into learning enough to be more than a paper MCSE while soaking up enough info to pass the test.

The "knowledge" contained herein is no substitute for real world experience, but is daunting to tackle even for a seasoned professional. If you really know computers, and just want test info, I'd recommend something like the Transcender exams instead.

Practical Useful SharePoint Information

I'm in the process of upgrading two clients from a 2010 to a 2013 SharePoint farm and have studied plenty of materials out there while earning my MCSE in SharePoint, and teaching the Core Solutions SharePoint 2013 course, but this book takes all that material and ties into useful and practical guidance and directions.

It gives you resources for discovering the 2010 farm before the upgrade (which is invaluable to me as a consultant) as well as a chapter about optimizing the SQL server environment for SharePoint and the section about installing SharePoint using least privilege is very cohesive. This section causes my clients and students more problems that anything else in setting up and securing a farm, but this book outlines it very clearly.

I'd recommend this book to new and experienced farm administrators that are looking at upgrading to a SharePoint 2013 or building a shiny new SharePoint farm. Enjoy SharePointing!

Great book for SharePoint Architects and Developers

I love this book and couldn't put it down once started reading it, but I am a geek and that's the kind of stuff I like. I thought Shannon laid out the material in an easy to understand fashion. Discovered a lot of good SharePoint information that wasn't obvious to me. This books will be a great asset when I design my next SharePoint farm.

A definitive treatise on software requirements

I run into this book by pure accident while searching for something else. I could not resist the idea of reading material that offered a discipline way to group software requirements into patterns. What I got was a lot more than that. The author offers a rich and solid argument for his propaosl to approach requirements using a taxonomy of patterns, dishes out his taxonomy spiced up with instructive commentary covering not only requirements but construction, quality, and documentation. I recommend this material to to anyone who cares about the software engineering craft.

An important but often dull subject made accessible and interesting

The purpose of this book is to help you decide and define what a new software system needs to do and to suggest what extra features to add to make it a very good system. It saves you effort and enables you to be more precise, by providing detailed guidance on how to specify individual requirements.

Requirement patterns are encapsulated expertise, conveniently prepackaged for reuse. The book contains 37 requirement patterns, each of which describes an approach to tackling a particular type of situation that comes up repeatedly in all kinds of systems, but focusing on commercial business software. Only a fraction of any system is specific to its business area; the bulk occurs over and over again no matter what your system is for. These patterns cover more than half of all requirements in some systems, and even more if you add the extra requirements the patterns suggest. Each pattern conveys not only the basic information that a requirement needs to convey, it also offers guidance on supplemental information that you need in your requirements in order to make them complete, comprehensible, and properly cross-referenced. This book contains over 400 example requirements, many of which are suitable for applying unchanged to any system and others that are a useful starting point for a requirement to suit the reader's needs. Many examples of better requirements

Stephen Withall should be congratulated for slugging through about 300 pages of examples of requirements. Many of them are quite good. For that alone, I recommend the book for all those who want to know what a fairly well written requirement might look like. If you want to know what a very well written requirement looks like, then you should go attempt to read Tom Gilb's book Competitive Engineering. I say attempt because Gilb is not an easy read.
Withall is honest from the beginning in that this is a book of examples using a pattern language. I don't have much enthusiasm for pattern languages, they seem to confuse me, but that is probably a personal problem. There is little to explain what requirements are or how to get them. This book focus is on writing them down. He does have a really brief (very, very brief) intro to requirements with more promised on the web. I didn't read the web stuff.
What I did learn, and colored my whole perception of the book, is that the working definition of requirement is focused flat on functional requirements. Yes, there is a nod to not functional requirements but they get a short shift throughout the book. Frankly, functional requirements are not that interesting. Yes, they are needed but they are typically really easy to get. It is the not functional requirements that get teams into trouble. It isn't that the software doesn't do what you want, it just does it in a way that you hate.
This is clear in the section on User Function requirements where (even if he told us earlier to specify the problem, not the solution) the examples are full of solution. "The system will refresh itself" and "Whenever a sound is played for the purpose of alerting the user, a visual cue shall also be invoked". Why I ask you? That is solution talk.
Now to be a bit more fair, problem and solution is a relative area so, without a clear description of the context, I can't say what those two examples really are, but my money is on solution. A problem UI requirement for the above is more like, "The user will correctly recognize an alert within X seconds 95% of the time" or something like that.
Bottom line, if you want to have a book of lots of examples, not to bad. In those examples are some good questions. But there is much more to do than to write them down.

Should have realized that this would not help me when they state in the book, "We assume you have been working with word for at least 6 months." Took the exam and nothing that was in this book was on the test. Guess you get what you pay for.

Not bad, but not as good as expected

I am an intermediate to advanced Excel user, so my review may reflect that level. As others have said, it looks like MS rushed this book to the market, evidenced by so many errata, which can be disappointing especially when the solution is wrong. On the other hand, there are some very interesting and genuine uses of various Excel functions to solve business problems.

I wouldn't recommend this book for beginners. If you're trying to learn Excel, this is not the book. It is not a book to teach excel, but a book to teach you what you can do with Excel to solve everyday problems, given you're familiar with the mechanics of excel.

I would recommend it with these caveats. And getting Walkenbach's book on Excel functions along with this would be very helpful in my opinion. Best of luck in your endeavors.

Microsoft Security - well done.

Microsoft has been changing OSes as often as the phone company changes area codes and with that you need to keep up on the latest developments. One of the biggest problems arising from computers today is security and this book certainly helps me to understand what it takes to lock down 2000 and XP.

Having worked with 2000 for over a year and XP for over 6 months, I am finding new things out everyday. I was pleasantly surprised to see that these authors have gone to great lengths to make the understanding of the security systems in 2000 and XP may not be a complex as they seem.

The book is very well documented, in fact the entire book is in PDF format making it a portable reference. What you'll find in the 800 pages is what to do from securing the internet to restricting access to setting user rights and permissions.

The authors have even gone as far as putting in numerous step by step exercises fro you to work with. Another thing that makes this book standout is the fact that is can be used for both the 70-214 and the Security+ exams.

Finally the section on wireless security is one that I am re-reading, while the concepts are understandable, I have to go over the section to fully understand it. The book also has a cd included and as stated before the e-book is include as well as a number of various add-ins and utilities.

I think the overall value comes from the fact that the book covers a wide range of security related information, 2 operating systems, and 2 versions of the XP operating system and is detailed and well documented.

Lots, lots (lots!) of help here

Thios damn book weighs about 20 pounds, but has more information per ounce than dozens of others. No padding, no wasted words, just pages and pages of help.

I've completely changed my backup procedures as a result of reading one chapter. And I'm more confident of my internet security and data integrety.
