Excellent PowerShell Resource

Ed Wilson is the Microsoft Scripting Guy and in his latest installment, as of this review, he shares his PowerShell knowledge with those eager to learn PowerShell. Whether you are just starting out or an experienced "PowerSheller", you shouldn't pass this book up. The flow of the book is great for the beginner and familiar to the expert, he does a great job covering the basics through advanced topics. I recommend this book to all Windows Administrators as a PowerShell learning tool.

Very Good Book

This is a very good book, it starts you out by showing your the basics of the language and then slowly takes you into the deeper sections of windows (AD, registry, etc)

I have found this book very helpful but I do have a complaint. The author shows you the commands that work with Windows 8 and Server 2012 now what if you are using Windows 7 some of these commands will not work and it does not tell you that it will only work in Windows 8 / Server 2012, if they would at least have a arrow... only works with Windows 7 I would really appreciate that.

I have learned a lot from this book and am sure I will purchase other books in his collection in the future, but if you are about to purchase this book to learn Power Shell 3.0 I would suggest you have Windows 8 and or Server 2012 handy.

Totally useless

Don' buy this book, it is totally useless!
It is nothing more than a bunch of isolated one line examples showing you how to do very trivial tasks followed by more examples of how you can 'simplify' your previous statement by using aliases and truncated commands.
For example Chapter 8: Using WMI the author tells you that WMI is very powerful and contains thousands of useful commands. The rest of the chapter deals with how you can filter your word search in order to help you find a command that could be useful to you. that's it!
There is no methodology to this book, it doesn't teach you how to do anything other than the handful of given examples.

Solid basic instruction text

Microsoft Sharepoint Foundation 2010 Step by Step is a typical entry in the Microsoft Step-by-Step series, a great guide for the novice who enjoys literal, step-by-step instruction. The book is less suitable for more advanced users or as a reference.

To follow along with the exercises, access to a Sharepoint 2010 Foundation server is, of course, required; most exercises will require Read/Contribute privileges on that installation. Internet Explorer 8 or later is recommended, with limited support for other browsers. Office 2010 would be required for chapters which use Office integration features not readily available in previous versions of that suite, which can be a drawback in corporate environments which haven't kept pace with MS versions.

Exercises walk the user through each component in a straightforward manner; sample files can be downloaded for the hands-on segments, a value-add in any case where the text is unclear. This is a learn-by-example text, where even the literal text fields are scripted, e.g., "in the name box, type 'FurniturePrice'". Users who are computer-challenged may appreciate this approach, and it certainly imparts the required techniques to achieve a stated goal.

Advanced users would probably find the sidebars and detailed instructions distracting.

In summary, a good text for initial training or those less sure of their computer literacy.

Just what I needed

I struggled with what was the best sharepoint (SP) book I wanted. I work for a company that uses it in a variety of ways. I needed it to participate in a "library" site, as well as for ideas to set up a team site for the department I work in. This book allowed me to undertstand the functionality and capabilities without getting too technical or confusing. I did end up going to the store to page through at least 10 other books before settling on this one. It has been very helpful, however sometimes I have to search around to find what it is I want...what I call it is not always what the technical term is. So, if you are looking for a good reference for team sites, this is great. Also gives you a great overview of functionality.

I am a SharePoint Project Manager who does a lot of SharePoint training, and I highly recommend this book to new users. It is accurate and easy to follow, and is very non-intimidating to new SharePoint users. I highly recommend it without hesitation.

Breath of fresh air

I normally buy Wrox books and up until .NET I was very happy with them, but their .NET books (ASP.NET 2.0 and VB.NET particularly) were poorly organized with massive numbers of errors in them. I wanted an ADO.NET book but the customer reviews of the Wrox title were poor so I kept looking and found this book that has much better reviews. I'd not bought a Microsoft Press book recently because I didn't like the last one I tried so this was an act of faith for me.

I have to say, thought, that this book is an order of magnitude better than the recent Wrox books I have bought. I don't know if the single author approach simply results in a better book or if the particular author (David Sceppa) can take the credit. Either way, I think Wrox needs to stop publishing books with multiple authors.

The problem with ADO.NET is that everything is intermingled and it's hard to discuss, say, DataSets without mentioning DataTables or DataAdapters. David (or someone) say down and very carefully figured out the sequence to explain stuff with the minimum of forward referencing. This means there are only a few unresolved references I have to hold in my brain at a time for which I am very grateful. On the down-side, this means there is some repetition as he discusses the same class relationship from different perspectives in different chapters. At first I found this annoying until I realized that this was actually making my life as the reader much easier.

I have yet to find a single error and the sample code in particalar seems to be error free which is in stark contrast to the Wrox .NET books. The samples themselves are compact and clean and writen in both VB and C# which is a handy way for a VB programmer like me to learn a little C# on the cheap. I certainly never found myself thinking 'The purpose of this sample is to add 10 unncecessary pages to this book' unlike other books *cough*XML Bible*cough*.

I'm only about one third of the way through right now but I am very impressed.

I really hope someone from Wrox reads this because I'd like the old Wrox back that published great technical books.

The best book on the subject

This book is great. I finally understand how ADO.NET works! And I've read quite a few books on the topic.

I find that most other books just tell you HOW to do things in ADO.Net without much explanation as to WHY you should. In my opinion, this book never does that. It explains WHY you should do something even before going into the HOW. I love that.

I wish the author would write a book on the new versions of ADO.NET, though.

Absolutely superb

I am a huge ADO.NET nut and David's first book was absolutely priceless. After his last book, he set a very high bar that was going to be hard to meet, yet that's exactly what he did.

Pros:

- He discusses every facet of the ADO.NET library and does it well

- He doesn't shy away from difficult topics and in particular, goes straight at them in his Advanced Update section

- Excellent flow

- Won't leave you hanging if you don't know the 1.x framework but doesn't bog itself down in it either.

CONS

-Calling this a con is probably a bit unfair but if there's one thing I didn't like was the coverage to TableAdapters. This has nothing to do with Sceppa's coverage and everything to do with the objects themselves. Since I never use them I have a bias against them. With that said, I doubt you could do a Core Reference without covering them so this doesn't really count.

The specific areas that this book really does a great job in is Transactions, Advanced Updates and client side data manipulation. Items like the syntax for DataTable.Select are covered in such stellar detail there's probably no situation that you will be unprepared for. Transactions are another complex area and this section alone makes the book worth its price. Advanced updates are a must in any ADO.NET book and history repeated itself here.

Good for first-time project managers

When I started reading Successful Project Management: Applying Best Practices and Real-World Techniques with Microsoft® Project, I was actually a bit confused for a short while. The reason? I was expecting to read about how to do project management with Microsoft Project, but instead there was nothing about it at all. And why so? Because the author did something very interesting: focusing on the methodology from the PMI (Project Management Institute), and only bringing in Project where required! This means that you will first get to learn about the theory of project management, and only afterwards you get to see how to do it in MS Project. In my opinion, this is a quite useful approach for PM beginners.

Which brings me to the next point: this book is for beginners only, not for experienced PMs. If you've been managing projects for a while already, there might not be much useful for you in this book. If you've just started with project management, however, this book is definitely an interesting read. It goes through the different phases of a project, following the standardised and proven PMI methodology. The book goes through all the important phases of a project (getting approval, building a WBS, building a schedule, budgeting, executing, managing change, and so on), however without going too deep into it. You'll get to understand the basics of each topic, however don't expect to much information that explains it much further.

My opinion of this book: I was struggling a bit whether I find this book only average or better than that. In the end, I thought hard about the target audience for this book and how useful it is for them, and came to the decision that it's a solid book for junior project managers, or anyone working on a project for the first time, and that I would give it a rating of 4/5.

Good book for entry level project managers, with some reservations

Worthwhile entry-level book for people in other disciplines (e.g. business analysis, software engineering) that want to move into project management. The book is largely based on the PMBOK (though it does not use any PMBOK-style processes and diagrams), and covers all knowledge areas. The book sticks with a generic project management approach, which can work with any type of software development methodology. Interspersed throughout the book are sidebars on how to perform various project management activities within Microsoft Project 2010.

On the minus side, I found the book to be a little too verbose for my liking. I preferred Stackpole's 'User Manual to PMBOK Guide' for this reason. Two glaring omissions from this book are the absence of any figures and the absence of any case studies or descriptions. Finally, there are no new ideas for experienced project managers. The book is useful to this latter category in that they can have a handy title to recommend to those interested in the field, and also their business counterparts.

Recommended for entry level project managers, who have had SDLC experience on at least two past projects.

Good value for new(er) project managers

Successful Project Management: Applying Best Practices and Real-World Techniques with Microsoft Project has a slightly misleading title - you won't really see MS Project used until chapter 4. This book is really about translating the Project Management Institute (PMI) methodology into a format which can be readily understood, with the occasional diversion to the use of Microsoft's Office tools. Project 2010 version is assumed, as is the availability of other Microsoft tools like Excel and Word.

If you have experience with formal project methods, this is probably not the book for you. New or part-time project managers would benefit from the text, as it discusses most of the touchpoints of project management in easily accessible language. That's not a small accomplishment, and is complemented by a clear, direct writing style.

The most common tasks in Project (work breakdown structure, resource information, etc ) are covered at a level sufficient to make the reader functional, but not necessarily expert. There are also a number of frustration-saving tips, such as those on where to use fixed dates on tasks.

In addition to the tool-related narratives, there are also chapters on ancillary topics like budgets, reporting and some financial analysis. This should be of great value to the novice PM.

Overall, a good purchase for anyone just starting out in project management.

About the Author

Errin O'Connor is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer for EPC Group. Errin focuses his efforts on implementing Microsoft Technologies in organizations throughout the country. Errin manages EPC Group's corporate strategy as well as architects the proven methodologies around collaboration, enterprise content management, and custom application development that have set EPC Group apart from its competitors.

Errin is the author of SharePoint Foundation 2010 Inside Out by Microsoft Press \ O'Reilly Media and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Inside Out by Microsoft Press. He has completed more than 140 highly successful individual SharePoint implementations and has worked with some of the largest organizations in the United States.

Penelope Coventry, SharePoint MVP, has more than 25 years of industry experience, currently focusing on the design, implementation, and development of solutions based on Microsoft® SharePoint® Products and Technologies. Penny has coauthored a number of books, including MICROSOFT® OFFICE SHAREPOINT® SERVER 2007 ADMINISTRATOR'S COMPANION and MICROSOFT® SHAREPOINT® PRODUCTS AND TECHNOLOGIES RESOURCE KIT.

Troy Lanphier, MCSE, MCT, MCTS, is a SharePoint consultant, developer, and trainer.

Johnathan Lightfoot is the Principal SharePoint Architect with General Physics Corporation. He has been involved with IT for over 20 years. He has worked in various roles including Help Desk, Level II and III Desktop Support, Windows and AS-400 Server Administration and Development. Companies he is fortunate to have worked for in the past include Electronic Data Systems, Hawaiian Telcom and Norwegian Cruise Line (yes he actually worked on the ships). However, the best experiences he says he has had were his nine years serving in the United States Navy. Johnathan is a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) who specializes in SharePoint 2010, MOSS 2007, WSS 3.0 and Office 2007 and 2010 technologies along with providing Soft Skills training for organizations.

Thomas Resing is a technology consultant and Microsoft Certified Master in SharePoint 2007 as well as a MCTS in SharePoint 2010, Configuration.

Michael Doyle, MCTS, MCSD, MCSE, currently works as the SharePoint Architect for Waggener Edstrom, one of the leading PR companies with offices around the world. Michael has been working almost exclusively with SharePoint for the last seven years. He has been in the software arena professionally for the last 20 years and has worked for companies such as A-dec, FedEx, Intel, NETWARCOM, Deloitte and Touche, HCA, Vanderbilt, and others. Michael has also done consulting, teaching, and professional software development. He is a frequent speaker and presenter at SharePoint conferences. He received his B.E. and M.S. from Vanderbilt University. In his spare time, he likes to kayak and travel. He currently lives in Santa Cruz, CA.

Massive encylopedic guide to SPF2010

At 778 pages, "Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Inside Out" is a massive base of information for users, technologists and architects crafting solutions on SPF2010. Errin O'Connor, Penelope Coventry, Michael Doyle, Troy Lanphier, Johnathan Lightfoot, and Tom Resing have delivered an encyclopedic tour of all that can be done on this platform by administrators, users, business sponsors and developers.

Chapter 2 is a great beginning for folks trying to determine if SharePoint2010 Foundation alone is right for them. There's a lot of distinctions, explanations and screen shots comparing base functions to those offered by Search Server Express, SharePoint Server Standard and Enterprise, FAST, Search Server, etc. All of which helps enable business sponsors to understand the implications of their platform decisions. There's an arsenal of end user techniques for working with lists and libraries and creating sites. However, there are also extensive sections on customizing SharePoint with Visual Studio or administering via PowerShell - not easy topics for a casual business power user!

The authors do a good job of providing clear examples of WHY a certain list or site might be used - for example, you might use a Document Workspace to organize a Disaster Recoery plan and related documents. In addition, the authors provide plenty of step-by-step instructions with plenty of helpful screenshots.

Some of the sections provide a lot more value than their titles suggest. For example, there's a section on Managing Site Content that actually provides a good introduction to SharePoint information architecture and governance. As you might expect, this is valuable to users of both SharePoint Foundation as well as the various SharePoint 2010 Server platforms.

Read carefully, though. There are a few parts of this book that discuss technologies only available in the paid, SharePoint 2010 Enterprise version of the product, such as the Decomposition Tree in Performance Point Although the authors make clear that this isn't part of SPF2010, these sections out of context could be misleading. Read the whole book!

SharePoint Foundation 2010 is a "free" product. Given that price, this book becomes an essential investment to accelerate value on the platform.

A step up from an introduction

A pretty good book on SharePoint Foundation 2010 overall. What distinguishes this book from others is that it deals with some more advanced topics that you normally don't find in other SharePoint books. These advanced topics include SharePoint Designer and development with Visual Studio.

Have these advanced topics probably makes the book less appealing to those new to SharePoint but is worthwhile for those looking to improve their experience with SharePoint beyond the basics. The books contains plenty of examples and is easy to read. It is also focused specifically on SharePoint Foundation 2010 which makes it different from most generic SharePoint books you find.

All in all a worthwhile read but perhaps more so for that person with an existing exposure to SharePoint who is looking to extend not only the capabilities of SharePoint but also their own experience with the product.

Lots of detail on a great product

With all the new features and enhancements in the 2010 release of SharePoint you can use this guide to migrate from an older version or start fresh and recreate your designs. The change in the UI can be difficult to master and finding your way around the features daunting. This book simplifies it it putting it at your fingertips.

Keeping up with the three year cycle of Microsoft is getting tougher and digesting al the new technologies daunting. The books in the Inside Out series help you get up to speed quickly and in detail. If you want to leverage the new SharePoint find a place for this book in your library.

Joyce Cox has more than 30 years' experience in the development of training materials about technical subjects for non-technical audiences and is the author of dozens of books about Office and Windows technologies. Joyce is vice president of Online Training Solutions, Inc. (OTSI). Previously, she was president of and principal author for Online Press, where she developed the Quick Course series of computer training books for beginning and intermediate adult learners. She was also the first managing editor of Microsoft Press, an editor for Sybex, and an editor for the University of California.

Well Prepared

The book does a great job of preparing you for the Office certification exams. I wish there was a practice test included, but there is a coupon link in the book to get a discount on the exam with a practice test through certiport. Otherwise, the book is well laid out, easy to follow and has great practice tasks at the end of each section. I passed four Office exams using it.
