A highly recommended read !
By Neeraj Agrawal
Wow, a very thorough book for windows phone developers! I liked the overall style and presentation of the book. If you are just starting off with windows phone development and have a good background in C# & XAML then the book will prove a valuable asset in your quest to become an app developer. As this book cover the internal of windows phone development, prior knowledge of a .NET language and XAML is highly recommended. The book starts off with a background on the architecture and vision of windows phone. This information is very important as this will be the founding stone in your journey. It then deals with the app model, navigation, UI design, web connection and how to retrieve and play around with the device and its media services etc. These are very interesting chapters which help you familiarize yourself with the landscape of app development.

There is a separate part in the book that discusses the migration from windows phone 7 to 8. It is very helpful for existing programs that need migration to the new OS. The same section also discusses how to create/work with live tiles, retrieve and work around the calendar/photos/maps etc. I enjoyed working with tiles/notification as this has been a differentiating area for windows from other mobile platforms.

Part 3 of the books is all about new features of windows phone 8. It teaches how to make use of the wallet feature as well as how to work around speech functionality of the phone. It explains in detail how app developers can make money by using the AdControl. Afterall, the very purpose of app development is to make some pocket change. You can learn to create apps for your company, if your company allows to do so.

The last part of the books is for die-hard fans of doing native (unmanaged) development using C++ and pointers.
I wished they have more in-depth coverage of games development as this is one area I'd like to explore more. Maybe the next edition will take care of this.
Overall, this is a book that dives down deep into the internals of win phone 8 development with a no-nonsense approach. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and will repeat as many times during my dev endeavors.

I give this book a two-thumbs up and a 5 star rating. And for sure, I will recommend the book to my fellow developers. Buy it and reap the benefit from its vast treasure of knowledge.

Very Good Windows Phone 8 learning book (not 8.1)
By R. Andersen
Of all the Win Phone 8 books I checked out, this the one book I purchased and it has been a valuable resource for my getting up to speed on writing windows phone 8 apps. I purchased the kindle version and kept it by my side while writing my first app.

Pros: The author does a great job of explaining the concepts and seems to have a good understanding of windows phone 8 sdk.

Cons: Most of the sample code is what I would call bare minimum to get the authors point across. Meaning, to write a good and fully functioning app according to MS guidelines there is much for research you need to do on the windows phone sdk and sample web sites. I feel, for the price of the book, the author could have created more in depth sample with detailed explanations. For example, hid Background Audio Player sample use static audio files and does not explain how to setup and use a playlist or to change media files in a play, or how to effectively communicate with the background audio agent.. In writing my own Background Audio Agent, I spent weeks researching other web sites and sample trying to come up with a clean way to handle BAP and APP communication.

However, I am looking forward to an 8.1 update or revision of this book. I hope Andrew considers writing an update with explanation and sample for ALL the new 8.1 SDK code.

Disorganized disaster.
By Jaewoo Kim
Tell me. Why do authors splatter their code all over the book and expect the reader to organize them?

For a reader trying to decipher and learn, that is a lot of needless work.

In this book, the author inexplicably combines his code samples (for example programs) with his example code (to reiterate his coding points). So the reader is left trying to put together various pieces of code which are code samples vs example code. Trust me, separating them is not easy, even if you understand C# fairly well.

To me, I spent far more time trying to organize the code than trying to learn them. What a waste of time that was.

To the author(s), please do the readers a favor and put all your codes in one continuous format. So provide the XAML and the Silverlight code in one continuous and coherent format. And please do separate your code samples that reiterates coding points into a totally separate format. That way, the reader is never left guessing whether the code you provide are code samples or example code.

Pros:
1)Author does seem to have good expertise on Windows Phone 8.

Cons:
1)Disorganized mishmash of code samples (for sample programs) and example code (codes that reiterates author's points). The reader is often left guessing which one is which.
2)Needs to provide more sample programs (in organized fashion).

Essential for anyone using Windows Server R2 for infrastructure services
By Paul Swanson
As someone familiar with configuring and administering previous versions of Windows Server my initial question was, what value could this book add over simple trial and error?

Firstly, I found this book has an excellent structure that lends itself to the immediate concerns of a system administrator setting up and configuring a new Windows Server install in an infrastructure role (AD, DNS, DHCP etc..). The author provides concise introductory insights to each topic but likewise does not hesitate to take a deep dive into very specific details where relevant and necessary, which I appreciated. Also, all the way through there are practical insights which can save you a bunch of time and effort down the road.

The author uses a enlightening mix of command line, registry & GUI instruction to illustrate the various operations that one might need to perform, all the while providing useful background information on how Windows functions. As Windows Server 2012 R2 in some ways still looks quite familiar to experienced users it could be easy to overlook some of the new features and methods of doing things which are now available. This book does a great job of bringing those new features to light in a way which is relevant to someone who is configuring a new Windows Server install with infrastructure services in mind.

This is a highly practical and insightful guide or reference for anyone looking to configure and install Windows Server 2012 R2 for infrastructure purposes. It's a book I'll be using when configuring a new server, role or wanting to gain insight on a certain feature or behaviour.

Great Book
By Matthew Epstein
Anyone who develops on Outlook should buy this book -- even if you don't have Outlook 2007. The beginning chapters review best practices and underlying architecture that every Outlook developer should understand, regardless of which version of Outlook you're using. Plus, you'll see all the great new stuff in 2007 which you'll want, so you can convince your stakeholders to upgrade. Later chapters drill into the technical details with surprising depth so you can find out what you need with only minimal trips to MSDN. Code samples are generous, albeit limited to only managed code... but that's understandable given the obvious advantages to using it for rapid application development.

The difference between this book and previous attempts to document the Outlook development experience is like night and day. Kudos to Randy and Ryan for understanding what we face and doing an admirable job at enlightening us.

Programming Office Outlook 2007 review
By Daff Niles
This book provides a good basic understanding of the process for programming Office Outlook 2007 plug-ins. It has a good spread of information about all the underlying office/outlook types and objects, although only briefly touches on their use. Demo's of using these objects are provided, covering typical basic tasks, but more advanced functionality is not really shown, though alluded to. The book makes extensive use (for C# programming) of a Shim Wizard which provides the interlinking functionality between the managed code and the COM interfaces. Unfortunately this wizard has been extensively modified since the book was published, and some of the instructions provided are out of date, resulting in the plug-in not functioning correctly. As very little information is provided with the book (and with the Wizard) working through these issues takes some time. The book's website does not include any errata to indicate the correct use of the modified wizard, though the site does contain links to the latest version of the wizard. Other than that the book is well worth it.

Essential for Outlook 2007 developers
By Peter O Dowd
If you're writing add-ins for Outlook, then this book is essential. The small cost of the book will save you days of trying to work out the best most appropriate ways to do things with the new object model.

Dino - Best ASP.NET Advanced Topics Book on the Market
By na
I own Dino's last book (Programming ASP.NET 2.0 Applications Advanced Topics) and this book continues his excellence in writing about advanced topics in ASP.NET. There are many things that he covers that you come across on a day-to-day basis and he explains those topics well.

The topics in this book are not simple. That's why sometimes I think people who have reviewed this says it can be a hard read. Well, again that's because the topics are NOT SIMPLE. When you are diving into creating your own custom controls, Virtual Path Providers, Asynchronous Commands & Callbacks, Http Handlers and the rest, of course the language is going to have to be pretty verbose...there's not really a good way around this unless you're going to write a 1000 page Head First type of book that explains it in more simple terms.

You will search the internet for a while trying to find this kind of information. I don't know how many times I have opened Dino's book to find what I'm looking for especially when we need to create custom providers, controls and to just really understand the processing of asp.net and all the low-level details that can really become overwelming. Dino does a nice job by not overly explaining things (since you could to way into depth on many of these advanced topics) but also does not leave you short in most of his sections.

His examples are more real-world also as well as his explaination and solutions while talking about a topic. I have been at 3 .coms and all of us used his book to figure out how to do a lot of advanced tasks quite literally by him explaining (examples Virtual Path Provider, custom Http Handlers, etc.).

He also takes the time to show you diagrams more than any book I've ready on the processes. I appreciate this time he has put in to the books he writes. He doesn't just write, he diagrams a ton in his book and this is important because the concepts here are very dry and you can get lost very quickly in all the things that happen behind the scenes in ASP.NET at a very low level.

Anyway, not sure why people are complaining about the expectation of perfection when this book provides a better review of advanced topics than you'll find in any other book as well as the internet itself in a lot of cases.

It's pretty much the Bible for our team in terms of advanced topics for ASP.NET. When in doubt open Dino's book.

Best asp.net book and 1 of best computer books overall
By Charles Flowers
This is one of the best computer books I have ever encountered on ANY subject in nearly 15 years of doing software development. The topics are presented in a chronological order that is excellent for learning. Dino goes into the details that any expert needs to know about what is going on under the hood. If you read and truly understand every page of this book, you will be an ASP.NET expert. You'll know what you need to architect AND develop highly scalable, fast performing real-world web apps. You'll have enough understnading on what ASP.NET is doing under the hood to diagnose any problems you encounter.
This is how books should be written, but very few are. I made the mistake of buying the O'Reilly book on the subject (and I usually like O'Reilly books), and it is nothing but a lightweight (and often imprecise and inaccurate) overview compared to this book.
My advice -- don't fool around with other amateurish books on the subject -- go straight for the definitive expert treatise and get this book.

Excellent Book
By Amazon Customer
This was my first Dino's book. Though this book was not the top-rated ASP.NET book, I took a chance. I am glad I did it, I love the book, I love his writing style. I recommended it to a colleague and he liked it too. I must admit that I have become a fan of Dino.

I have couple of other ASP.NET books too. This is the only one that I keep going back to refer.

Plain and Simple as defined
By C. Bess
This book is a high-level, fully illustrated summary of the most common functions that users of Microsoft Lync will consume. It doesn't go into anything about programmatically accessing the underlying functions, but with a title including the words "Plain and Simple" you shouldn't expect that.

I did like the fact that the book started out with what's different about Lync 2013. I've used previous version of Lync before so when the 2nd chapter address what's new, I was happy.

The illustrations were well labeled and clearly pointed out the various components of the User Interface and why they were on the screen at that moment. There were Tips sprinkled throughout the book with some additional insights from the author about particular features.

Missing from the material presented were scenarios about why the author thought certain features would be useful, that might stretch the preconceptions of the reader.

Although the book may be a useful reference for an experience Lync user to refresh themselves on specific features, I'd say the main target audience is people starting to use Lync or upgrading from a much older version of Office Communicator.

Almost worthless
By Michael J Toresco
This book MAY be good for a complete beginner, but do not expect to pass the exam using it. This book will get your feet wet with some basics in Windows Server 2012/R2, but even that it does poorly.

First off, the book's preparation for the exam is sub par. After going through the entire book, and working through all the exercises in a test environment i created, I took a practice test online. I did terribly. Much of the practice test was completely unfamiliar to me. This book should be titled 'A beginners guide for Server 2012 R2', and in no way reference the fact that it prepares you for 70-410.

Secondly, many of the sample exercises have you going through the motions, but do not explain WHY you are going through the motions. This is the whole point of 70-410, to understand why you're doing something. For example, on the section about demoting a domain controller, it recommends you check the box to force demotion, but doesn't say why. Upon looking up this information via google, I found out that it's purpose is to forcibly remove the domain controller from the domain, and this leaves behind many orphaned objects in your AD. This option should only be used as a Last Resort! So why is the book having me blindly do it with no explanation?

Thirdly, there are several chapters with poorly written questions at the end. In fact, theres one chapter where the entirety of the questions have no relation whatsoever to the content of the chapter. I'm pretty sure this was an editing mistake, but its completely unacceptable. Something like this should have been caught.

If you're looking for a beginners basic guide to server 2012 to get your feet wet, then this book won't hurt too much (just be sure to google some details as you go through its workflows). If you're looking to pass the 70-410 exam, look elsewhere.

Not nearly enough. A start for beginners.
By Nick Garver
While the book introduces you to some key topics, it fails to give nearly any depth, and misses many other key areas for the exam. I've taken numerous practice tests and have consistently failed. I've done some research for exam objectives on TechNet, and there are so many topics this book doesn't even touch. Ridiculous. This should not be an Exam Ref book. This should be an introduction to Installing and Configuring 2012 R2.

NOT sufficient study material
By Herp Dee Derp
I studied for the 70-410 using this book with even setting up my own lab environment, in addition to already having experience with Windows Server 2008 R2 and already having a CCNA certification. The material in this book doesn't come anywhere close to preparing you for the actual exam itself.

The book itself is good in that it does give you a nice overall primer of moving from previous Windows Server versions to 2012 R2 in particular, and could definitely get you on the right track as far as being a server admin for newer versions of Windows, but it fails handily in its objective of being an exam reference. For starters, even though as I read the practice questions on each chapter and only got one of them wrong in the whole book (and IMO the question was poorly worded,) I still failed the 70-410 on June 2nd 2014.

I want to say that the 70-410 is perhaps suffering from a bit of an identity crisis. Namely, as of Windows Server 2012 (to a small extent in 2008 R2 as well) there are two to three ways of doing any one thing (generally either the powershell method or the GUI method, with maybe a third method involving some of the non-powershell command line applets) and with this particular exam you're expected to know ALL of the ways of doing them.

That isn't inherently a bad thing, just this particular book doesn't prepare you for it.
