Not apples-to-apples, but an insightful read!

I agree with some of the earlier criticism of this book in that the author, Persse, does not fully tie in a soluble fix to issues within the IT industry after analyzing the "Hollywood" project machine. The Hollywood method of doing things is just simply too different from Information Technology and its methods within the American business organization.

Having said this, I think part of Persse's point in analyzing the way Hollywood does projects, is for us to challenge our methods in IT, or at least our way of thinking about it. Yes - it is different. As another reader points out - many in the IT industry work 8-10 hour days compared to Hollywood's 12-16 hour days. And yes, an IT organization may have full-time employees and invest in employee development as opposed to a Hollywood project which will audition and hire only the best, most fitting candidate for that specific project and release them from their contract afterward. Is 100% contract labor the next step for the IT industry? This is doubtful, but there is still a valuable lesson here.

These differences are paramount, and as Persse points out from numerous interviews and concrete examples - these differences are the foundation of how Hollywood has honed and molded their success.

This book was an interesting 3rd-person perspective to project planning. Take a moment to step outside your work-cultural "norm" to see how Hollywood conquers some of the more common pitfalls to project planning. I doubt that an IT professional could implement all of these ideas without radically overhauling the organization (if not the industry), but it is a worthwhile read, and may challenge you to consider your planning and goal-setting on a completely different level.

Outstanding Book Covering T-SQL Programming w/ SQL Server 2008

Being primarily a database and web developer, I feel more than experienced enough to review 'Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2008: T-SQL Programming' by Itzik Ben-Gan and others and I feel more and easily able to give this ***** and highly recommend this text. All the basics are covered in this 800 page book. It's not a teaching book that will give you all the ins and outs of database design and use, but it will show you what the major points of using SQL Server 2008 are, and how to get the most out of them.

Major topics covered are Views, User-Defined Functions, Stored Procedures, Triggers, Transactions & Concurrency, Error Handling, Temporary Tables/Table Variables, Cursors, Dynamic SQL, Date/Time usage, CLR User-Defined Types, Temporal Support, XML & XQuery usage, Spatial Data, Tracking Access and Changes, and finally Service Broker discussion.

The parts of the book that I enjoyed most were the last 6 chapters, as discussion on CLR usage, Spatial Data, and the like are limited in most other SQL Server books. I especially loved the chapter on Spatial data, a very important subject that has much, much greater support than years in the past.

If you are a SQL Server developer or admin, you owe it to yourself to take a hard look at this great book. It is written fantastic and is a great resource that I found useful from the moment I picked it up.

Probably the best focused on T-SQL Programming

I can't praise this book enough.
This is one of those books that keeps you interested like a good best-selling novel because it's so well written, almost in a conversational way. The author seems pationate about the technologies being shown and he doesn't try to confuse the readers by using a vocabulary which is difficult to understand like many other technical books.

Each chapter is filled with real world code examples and you can download the sample database used in the book's website. I find the examples to be satisfyingly useful and a lot of them helped me to think of better ways to optimize my code.
This book also served as a wonderful reference when I was studying for my MCITP exam.

To sum it all, this is probably the best book about T-SQL I've read because it's easy to understand and presents many useful techniques and explanations. It's not for the beginner though. To those I recommend the first book in the series: "T-SQL Querying" by the same author.

I recommend this book along with Kalen Delaney's SQL Server 2008 Internals because they complement each other amazingly.

Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2008-T-SQL Programming Book Review

I have used SQL Server since the 6.5/7.0 days and thought I knew enough to get by. I had various experiences with SQL Server 2000/2005, and then did not immediately use SQL Server 2008 until the Spring of 2010; I took a T-SQL CLASS using SQL Server 2008 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California. I learned a great deal that I did not previously know from Professor Shui-lien Huang, a very excellent teacher.

You can work with SQL Server, and unless you have the opportunity to have many challenges to stretch your skills, you may seemingly work in a silo and never learn all of it, which is a good reason to buy this book: "Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2008: T-SQL Programming". I am glad I had the T-SQL class before reading this book.

This book contains the typical coverage for a standard T-SQL statement, and then User-Defined Functions (UDFs), Triggers, Stored Procedures, Views, etc., but also some new things. For example, extending SQL Server by using CLR (Common Language Runtime) user defined types, the use of XML, dynamic SQL, and Service Broker for reliable, asynchronous processing, and Spatial Data (i.e. geodata).
On the subject of Spatial Data in Chapter 14, Microsoft has brought forth new data types, operators, and indexes to the database. Microsoft introduces the core spatial concepts and provides key programming constructs to successfully navigate this new feature in SQL Server 2008. There are 70 pages covering Spatial Data. Obviously, this is a heavy topic.

Because of auditing and compliance requirements, the issue of tracking access and changes to data has become much more important. This book shows how previous versions of SQL Server did take care of this to some degree, but in SQL Server 2008, Microsoft has added the following: change tracking, change data capture, Extended Events, and SQL Server Audit. The book shows provides guidance on where each of these new technologies is best used, and then goes on to show how to implement each technology.

This is not a beginner's T-SQL book, but it does cover beginner topics, as mentioned above. In addition, it covers some of the new aspects of SL Server 2008 that are more complex. This is most assuredly a valuable reference book that all T-SQL and .NET developers and database administrators should have nearby. It will give you excellent instruction and answers to your T-SQL questions.

Excellent Guidebook

Granted, it probably helps if you're migrating from another language (like I was - from VB), but it's an excellent text which gives you plenty of background & extra information, then takes you into step-by-step exercises to reinforce what you just read. This methodology really worked for me, and I highly recommend this book. Initially, I was concerned that it was going to be literally just step-by-step instructions on how to use C# and Visual Studio .NET, but the information between the exercises, plus additional notes and best practices really helped me out with learning the language and some potential gotchas.

This book is detail oriented, and goes into some depth into the structure and capablities of the language.Overall it is well organized and focused with little fluff, and does touch on relavant topics. However, there is little in the way of the 'hands on' projects that can be found in a tutorial or most college textbooks..I found this aspect annoying since this is the primary way I learn. Ultimatley, I will end up using it for a referance

Short but Sweet

I'm not a computer guru by any means. When asked to write a training program on Outlook 2010 I needed something FAST that could provide basic information to assist me. I could have turned to Microsoft tutorials, which I did use for reference, but I needed something less detailed that still provided step-by-step processes that I could understand and pass along to others who were using Outlook 2010. "Outlook 2010 Plain & Simple" provided all I was looking for. I was able to deliver a pretty basic class, with some extra functions and enhancements thrown in for good measure. I used the book to find answers to questions as they came up in class. By all accounts, the trainees were on the road to using 2010 in a timely manner and with less difficulty had they only followed Microsoft tutorials or used other books. Frankly, I chose "Outlook 2010 Plain & Simple" because it isn't a massive volume and was written in a way I could understand. If you're looking for a more technical, detailed book, you might want to choose something else. Why only 4 stars? It suit my purpose; it may miss the mark for others. All depends on what you're looking for.

Sure enough, Everysince I received it on Nov. 2, 2010, I am amazed as to how simple it explains many things. I guess you could say, I have really enjoyed using it. If you know nothing about the workings of Outlook 2010, I heartedly recommend you purchase it. Besides that, it is very reasonable in price.

What More CG Books Need to Be

As a well-versed member of the "Google Images & Clone Stamp" school of texturing, I know full well that knowing all the technical ins and outs of a program doesn't guarantee good results. A strong grounding in fundamental art principles is needed to make proper use of all the technical bells & whistles.

It can be said that Digital Texturing & Painting is too art-heavy, but it's such a critical aspect of good CG that's either glossed over or omitted in other books. Being able to break down & understand all the many elements of a texture so it can be recreated and controlled is of the utmost importance. And learning how to go beyond photos and start working with the infinitely unique number of real world textures you can find or create adds new levels to your texturing work.

Although the specific texturing examples are rather short, the author covers the basics of several texturing methods. NURBS, polygons, using projections, using 3D paint software, tiling textures, using Illustrator, using Photoshop, making & scanning in real world objects or just making things from scratch. And the included CD has the PSD files for you to poke around in a figure out how the maps are put together.

Digital Painting & Texturing has the breadth & depth to be a helpful book for texture artists of all levels.

Don't walk, RUN!!!

What strikes me about this book, is the seriousness and devotion that Owen Demers has for this topic. I have seldomly seen such wonderful piece of work. My congratulations to the author and publisher for accomplishing such a thoroughly high quality release!
This book is really what ALL artist should be forced to read at any point, but preferably the beginning, of their careers. It focuses on developing the art of seeing as the most important tool in your arsenal. Once you can SEE, then you can reconstruct any complicated or simple texture. This is of course a project so great that a lifetime is not enough, but nonetheless, I have never seen it handled better than in Digital Texturing & Painting. I love the idea that traditional artists will be able to find tons of insights in this book for digital artists. The new are teaching the old. But again even though the explicit theme of the book is textures for 3D purposes, the teaching is that this is just another tool, the underlying priciples are the same as in all visual art.
This is one book you should run to get now. Simply because it will make you a better artist, in whatever field you are, now and for good.

Clearly written and valuable tutorials and reference.

I'm new at computer graphics and this book gives me the start that I found no where else. While I say this book is definately a buy if you want to make great textures, there have been a few places where I wish it was more informative for the newbie. I'm having trouble grasping all these "maps" and what they are. Nothing in the index on maps so I hunted around. There are explanations, but still nothing about what most of the maps physcially are or how to create some of them. Computer graphics is complex with its own lingo so expect, even with this book, to have a steep learning curve. I can't imagine how steep the learning curve would be without this book!

Decent enough, but not exceptional

When I bought this book, I had hoped for a structured tutorial on the .NET Task Parallel Library and PLINQ. I had hoped it would start with simple Task objects and work its way up to more complex development issues. Instead, the book starts out with a discussion of processor core efficiencies and patterns for decomposing jobs into tasks. Those topics would work function better as appendices to the main text, which should focus on the .NET libraries and how to use them.

The second chapter spends more time talking about sort algorithms than the TPL. That was pretty much the point at which I put this book down and started looking for something else. I wouldn't recommend this book as a learning resource for the TPL or PLINQ, although it might be useful as a review for those already familiar with the libraries.
