The books smell bad
By Terry Ann Clifford
I just received my books and they smell all mildewy. The cardboard packaging showed signs of being moist and smelled of mildew. This had to have happened befor DHL picked yp the items for transport as the box was sealed with plastic wrapping. The books do not show signs of getting wet at all, I just have to try to get rid of the aweful smell.

I haven't gone through any of the tutorials in the books or opend the cds yet, so this is only a partial review.

This title shows developers how to build Internet-based, distributed applications using Microsoft® .NET Remoting, which enables powerful remote interaction among objects. A fundamental understanding of .NET Remoting is crucial as developers shift to developing distributed, Internet-based applications. Until recently, DCOM was the preferred method for developing distributed applications on Microsoft platforms. But as this book demonstrates, the .NET Remoting architecture is much easier to use and extend than DCOM. The book covers all aspects of .NET Remoting, including in-depth coverage of the .NET Remoting architecture plus concrete examples, best practices, and performance tips to show how to extend and customize the framework.

  • Provides developers with deep design and implementation guidance to help them build better distributed applications on the Microsoft .NET Framework
  • One third of the book introduces readers to the basics of using .NET Remoting to develop distributed application
  • Two-thirds of the book covers advanced features of .NET Remoting plus details on how to extend and customize the Although Java and C# share many similarities, there are fundamental differences between them. What’s more, C#—the language designed from the ground up for programming the Microsoft .NET Framework—offers a wealth of new features that enable programmers to tap the full power of.NET. This is the ideal guide to help any Java developer master .NET programming with C#. The authors—two Java and C# experts—reveal the similarities and differences between the two platforms these languages support. Then they show you how to leverage your Java experience to get up to speed in C# development with a minimum of difficulty. It’s the definitive programming resource as you tackle the .NET class libraries and learn to write applications for .NET with C#. Topics covered include:

No depth
By Sam
This book sucks... I don't know why others ranked it high. I thought it would be more compact because it skims over topics that Java developers are aware of but still goes into depth on topics that are new to Java people. I've read through the first 6 chapters and it skims over every topic! It does not give an in depth explinataion of how things work and why. Topics like the runtime environment, memory management and other things should definitly be more in depth. Im switching back to the other book I have Pro C# with .Net 3.0. Overall C# for Java Developers has been the most bland, uninsightful programming books I've read.

Unbiased Java /.Net C# comparison, with good topic depth
By petej
The author does a good job of describing both the similarities and the differences of the Java 1.4 and .Net, C# languages, API's, without any percievable bias to either. The depth of coverage for both the language, API core's is very good. The depth of coverage for the enterprise topics, e.g., JDBC/ADO, Remoting, web services, XML, etc... is also very good.

Even Handed
By Lou Gutnicki
This book does 3 things:
Firstly, the book presents the spirit and syntax of the C# language. And the presentation is very focused - it's done against a backdrop of Java.
Secondly, the authors do a flyby of the main areas of the .NET Framework Class Libraries. Again, the assumed reader's knowledge of Java motivates the discusion.
Lastly, and most importantly, Java and C# are contrasted rationally. No hype. Just the facts as the authors see them. This is good stuff and useful too.
If you're are an experienced Java developer, you will get a lot from this book. I still recommend to the Java folks that you also read up on the specialty areas, e.g. ADO.NET, Remoting, etc., if you will be working in those areas.

GREAT - In every regard!
By Tarun
With the move to Windows server 2008 and Exchange 2007, the command line has been a place that needs to be re-visited. Technology is forever changing, thanks to our friends in Redmond. This book, therefore, is the perfect companion to anyone that is on a server trying to get things done on a regular basis.

There are extensive examples and discussions about command line operations. I have been administering windows servers for a long long time and did not realize that there was so much hidden in the kernel that I dont know about.

This book will help you get stuff done.....if not teach you a new trick or two that you can show off with. The appendix has a dictionary type feel to it, allowing you to search out specific command line functions with examples.

Great book, great price!

-Thanks,

Impressive!!!

William Stanek is the #1 windows guru for a reason. His work is highly respected and his pocket consultants are always excellent. The first edition of this book is the go to book for every ITer I've ever worked with. When the second edition came out, I didn't hesitate to buy it and I wasn't disappointed.

I normally don't read technical books cover to cover, but I read this cover to cover within days of buying it. I was amazed at the depth of information and the attention to detail. The author clearly knows what's important and what's not. His writing is clear, concise and no nonsense. Every one who works in IT should get a copy of this book.

The book starts out explaining the fundamentals you need to master the command line. I really liked how the author covered every facet from the basic to the advanced. There's a massive amount of information on maintaining and monitoring computers using the command line and automating it all with scheduling. I didn't know half the tools that are included with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 or that you could do so much with them.

It may surprise you to learn that Microsoft employs as many software testers as developers. Less surprising is the emphasis the company places on the testing discipline—and its role in managing quality across a diverse, 150+ product portfolio.

This book—written by three of Microsoft’s most prominent test professionals—shares the best practices, tools, and systems used by the company’s 9,000-strong corps of testers. Learn how your colleagues at Microsoft design and manage testing, their approach to training and career development, and what challenges they see ahead. Most important, you’ll get practical insights you can apply for better results in your organization.

  • Design effective tests and run them throughout the product lifecycle
  • Minimize cost and risk with functional tests, and know when to apply structural techniques
  • Measure code complexity to identify bugs and potential maintenance issues

Highly recommended for all current and would-be testers.
By Joseph S. Strazzere
In "How We Test Software at Microsoft", Alan Page, Ken Johnston, and Bj Rollison provide a terrific mix of insight into Microsoft, along with in-depth explanations of practical test processes.

From the introduction:

"This book is for anyone who is interested in the role of test at Microsoft or for those who want to know more about how Microsoft approaches testing. This book isn't a replacement for any of the numerous other great texts on software testing. Instead, it describes how Microsoft applies a number of testing techniques and methods of evaluation to improve our software."

I would also add that this book is for anyone who wants to learn some extremely useful, real-world approaches to both typical and complex testing situations.

This is a very good book - one I highly recommend to all current and would-be testers.

Beuacratic and vague, few examples of any real testing
By B. Madden
Spoiler Alert: Software is tested at Microsoft with mind-numbing bureaucracy and buzzwords.

I understand this is a "how we do testing a Microsoft" book, but I at least expected a few real code samples, unit tests, test automation scripts, or test plan samples. Instead, code samples were obviously simple functions thrown together by the author, and in-depth testing samples are nowhere to be found.

Instead, this book mostly comes off as an HR manual. MS's testing career path is documented in agonizing detail, and the author tries too hard to suck up to his bosses. Seriously, he actually tells the reader to search for Steve Balmer speeches on Live.com to become inspired.

Once they actually start talking about testing, it is incredibly vague and buzzword laden. There are a few good pieces of advice here, but nothing you won't find in a far better book.

The key question of how software is tested at MS is never really answered. For example:

1. Linux maintainers use Coverity on the Linux Kernel. Does MS use such tools on their Kernel?
2. What sort of scripting languages are used for automation testing of Office or Windows or any other MS product?
3. What sort of Unit Testing software do MS developers use? CppUnit? NUnit? The Unit testing feature in VS2008? What do some of these unit tests look like?
4. What does the typical test plan at MS look like?
5. What sort of white-box testing do developers perform? There are a few vague references to unit testing, but what about performance and coverage testing? What specific tools do they use? What do their result reports look like?

After reading this book, I'm hard pressed to answer any of these.

I would strongly advise people new to testing to avoid this book; otherwise they will be discouraged. Testing can actually be fun and interesting--this book is not.

P.S., I notice the high reviews of this book are from Microsoft employees. Conflict of interest, anyone?

Good book on Software Testing
By Amazon Customer
This book is one of my favorities on Software Testing. I would recommend this book to every one who wants get a fresh perspective on software testing/SQA. My best pick from the book is the chapter on "A practical approach to Test Case design", Authors have tremendously succeeded in explaining the principles with great real life examples in a very lucid style. Personally, it helped to improvize the test planning efforts at my work place and also to explain & emphasize the need for desigining "practical" test scenarios to my students. Chapter on "Test Automation" provides very good insights on how to take best advantage of automation tools. Book is neatly organized and will be a great reading for beginners and for experienced QA professionals as well.

Many pen-based software platforms have been introduced in the last decade, but only recently has the introduction of faster processors and hardware enabled mainstream introduction of tablet-sized pen-based PCs. This book tackles the challenge of writing compelling Tablet PC software on two fronts. First, it distills decades of usability research into pen-based computing to present an authoritative discussion of the optimal design of pen-based user interfaces. Second, it provides an in-depth exposition of the Tablet PC Ink SDK, complete with tips and tricks on how developers can produce the most powerful and natural “ink-aware” applications.

Must-have if you want to write .NET Tablet PC Apps
By Markus Egger
This is an excellent book for everyone who wants to start programming Tablet PC applications using C#. (Or even any other .NET language as the examples really aren't that hard to translate...). The book is well organized and readable and guides the reader through all the aspects of writing the typical Tablet PC application.
Of course, this whole subject is extensive, and the book can not discuss it all. For advanced topics such as writing ink recognizers from scratch, you will have to find another source. But I really wouldn't expect a book like this to cover all the advanced topics.
Note that this book does NOT cover COM-based or non-managed (non .NET) APIs. If you want to write your Tablet PC app with VB6, you will get some good fundamental information here, but no specifics. Again, I wouldn't hold this against the author, but it is good to know.

I want my Tablet PC!
By Martin L. Shoemaker
The most frustrating part about this book is that I got it two months ago, and I won't get my Tablet PC until next week (this week if I'm REALLY lucky). This book makes programming the Tablet PC so clear and simple, I'm eager to get started. (The book does note that you can use the Tablet PC SDK with a regular Window XP machine and a range of digitizing tablets, but warns that there will be things that don't work well. I'll wait.) The code examples are clear, readable, and easy to comprehend (if a bit repetitive, since they include code for creating and populating a WinForm every single time). Normally, I just skim over code examples, since they're usually wordy and cluttered, and the key points are usually summarized in the main text. Well, these examples ARE summarized in the main text, which is always good; but the examples are very simple to follow (especially if you skip the WinForm stuff).
There are only two things I wish this book had covered:
* Speech. A Tablet PC is supposed to be fully speech-enabled, but no one's talking about that right now (so to speak). (Sorry for the double pun.) The ink management itself is such a large topic, no one seems to have time for the speech features. And this book is no better. It's just too large as it is, so I understand; but I hope someone soon does a similar book about the Speech API.
* Custom Recognizers. Now for this oversight, I do fault the authors and MS Press. The authors claim this is a large, obscure topic, and they refer you to the SDK. Well, I agree that it's large; but I don't think it's obscure at all. Most of the Killer App ideas I have for the Tablet PC will require custom recognizers. (I can use the built-in recognizers, but the results won't be perfect in a couple of areas.)
But those are small quibbles. This book has been great fun to read, and I'm counting the days until I can apply it.

The only book on an important subject
By William G. Ryan
Well, I can't say it's the only book on Tablet PC development, but it's by far the most thorough and well documented. Rob does a really great job on this one, and my only gripe about it is that it starts out kind of slow and can be a bit dry at times. However, that's more a function of the subject matter than any fault of the writer, and I would say this book is a definite 5, and a must have for any Tablet PC developer.
A lot of Tablet PC developement is identical to what one does on a traditional desktop app. The main difference being Ink. If you are buying a Tablet PC book, this is probably the main thing you are interested in and it does a great job of discussing it. It takes a few chapters for the rubber to start hitting the road as far as Inking, but I that would be the case in any book that covered Tab Development in depth.
And once the book gets going...the discussion and analysis is pure gold. I found it very relevant and by and large pretty interesting. It's technical content is as good as it gets. All the code samples worked, the samples got to the point and were well explained and nothing critical was left out in order to get the examples running.
This is the first 'real' book on Tablet Development that I've come across and it's never easy being the first to write on such a technology. I think the author shows a great deal of empathy toward the reader and definitely goes out of his way to help you along.
Sure, I had my little gripe that I mentioned above, but this book is unquestionably one of the finer computer books I've come across recently (and there are a lot of great ones these days) and the author is to be commended on the professional and quality job he did on it.
If you are going to write professional Tablet Apps, or if you are just developer looking at recreationally developing Tablet Apps, this book is a must have.

First of all, you have to not only study the book, but use all the included resources - questions at the end of the chapter, the practice labs (I used a virtual server), and of course the practice tests on the CD. There's no substitute for hands-on training. Reading this book alone doesn't guarantee a pass, nor should it. You have to use the product, understand the concepts, and shore up the weak areas you'll discover when you do the practice tests.

There is some material in the book that's a little overkill. For example, there wasn't one question on the exam about IPv6, even though the chapter on this goes into a lot of detail. There also wasn't much on the exam about the appplications within IIS. I didn't mind though. since my next exam WILL cover these. Learning more is always a good thing.

All in all, this is a pretty thoroughly written book for the exam objectives. I've gone though a couple dozen certification books over the years (including others by Ian and Orin), and this one rises to the top as one of the better ones.

Thanks for the pass guys!

New content

This edition is useless for the new 70-646 exam. Microsoft Training and Certification has already stated that the second edition with the new content is due out July of 2011; although, they are currently testing using the 2008R2 content. Do not waste your money. I've tested twice using this self study including a completely different set of questions from MeasureUp and have failed the test twice. I have scored average 95% for ten certification modes on this book and the MeasureUp tests.

This is the first edition of this book. The second edition is what you should buy, but it does not show up in Amazon's search unless you search for the ISBN: 9780735649095. Get that one instead!
