Pretty good book

I've been blogging since long before the practice became known as "blog," and I've tried many different blog servers. By far I like the new MSN Spaces the most because it really is colorful and easy to use, and gives you lots of storage. This book is a good book to introduce people unfamiliar with blogs to creating their own blogs. It has lots of cool examples. Next to my first edition of "eBay for dummies," this is another really useful book even for an Internet veteran like myself.

This is the first how-to book on MSN Spaces featuring essential insights and tips for the beginning blogger. It introduces the novice to the fun and social aspects of blogging on MSN Spaces. this is a pretty basic book everything that is in this you could very easily find in the msn help thing or whatever it is called. Im not critisizing msn spaces though it is great place to start blogging, but i think that this book was someones get rich quick scemes. By just copying and pasting it all out of the help menus. Final word skip it but try msn spaces

Great place to start... or come back

Ed Wilson is awesome anyway so any chance to read his work outside of his blog and / or tweets is great. I am a pretty active PS guy and wanted to just have the book to skim for some of my co-workers and people we give "Skilling up" sessions to. The great thing about this book is in each of the chapters I got a little good nugget of info to take with me. I always appreciate a tech book that can give you something no matter what your skill level.

A Must-Have

The book covers a very interesting toolbox (of course it's more than one tool!) that is growing and gaining momentum in the IT field. The book covers all the basic needed tools to get started using PowerShell. From simply managing a number of folder to working with Active Directory and managing exchange servers. To sum up the book in three words: The PowerShell Reference. I found the "After completing this chapter, you will be able to" and "Chapter X quick references" sections of the book a smart touch. It helps to know what should the reader expect and what the reader should have learned through the chapter. The exercises are broken up into several steps, each of which explain what that piece of script does and why it is there. The scripts are also explained thoroughly, something every coder appreciate. At the end of the book, you will face 7 appendices to guide the lost. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely! I have already talked to a group of friends and classmates before I even reached the end of the book. It needs to be on the shelf of every IT person.

Good but complicated

This book ramps up quickly. This isn't a beginners book as it's touted to be. In almost no time Ed Jones is utilizing aliases which can be confusing to those who aren't familiar with them. I've always liked Ed Jones' style of writing and read him frequently on Hey Scripting Guy but this is quite different. It is good however for a review guide if you just can't quite get that one part of your script to work.

This is a must read....

This is a must read for todays savvy devloper. Michael is obviously a talented individual who shares his insight in a simple no nonsense fashion. You can spend 10 yrs making all these mistakes and learning from them or just read this book! I have brought several for our department that have become well thumbed in only a few weeks.

...so I picked it up and flipped through it. It is packed with valueable (and useable!) information. This book seems so useful, I ordered myself a copy. Nothing else out there talks about how to write (and test) the security aspects of an application.

Very good book on security mistakes and how to fix them

When deciding on whether or not to buy a book, I normally read the reviews to find out what people did not like. After checking out this book, I am shocked at the comments one of the reviewers wrote, as he unfairly panned the book on something that it was not intended to solve.
If you are looking for a heavy coders book to show you how to code security in your apps, this is probably not the best place to look. While there is some code, that is not the primary focus. You will also be disappointed if you are looking for code samples that easily migrate to other systems.
The book is, overall, very Microsoft-centric. Whether this is good or bad depends largely on your point of view. While you can apply many of the techniques to any platform to shore up holes in your code.
There are many of the security mistakes in this book that I found almost laughable, until I tested code on a few collegues sites. If you code your SQL strings in ADO, for example, you might be leaving a way for a malicious user to gain admin rights to your SQL Server.
If you think there is no way in the world you would ever need a book on security holes in code, then this book is probably tailor made for you. Understand, of course, if you do not do windows, the code samples will be far less useful than if you do.

Looks to me like a set of tips about Access 2013

I was looking for a book that will teach me how to build an Access database from start to finish using even a basic example. This book teaches you mainly how to do "this" or "that" in Access 2013 which you can get online for free. To me, the only advantage in buying this book is that you get "all" these tips in one place... You can read this entire book in a few hours . My rating of this book means it is not what I was looking for. It might be good for someone else but I will not recommend it to anybody trying to learn how to build a database from start to finish (no matter how basic that database might be)!

Okay, but you WILL need more to pass.

The 70-270 XP exam requires in depth preparation to pass this exam. It is a 58 question exam, with only 50 being scored.

Having recently took this exam and using this book, you can safely assume I am qualified in reviewing this book.

Firstly, for a book this size, you would want it to contain all areas of the exam. Sadly, it doesn't, and the student is left graping for external sources simply because the book doesn't even touch on them. IIS and vPN material is so scarce, I had to go through the book a few times to see if really was in the book. It wasn't. There may have been a time when this book was all you need, but the exam has been updated so much and changed that is more difficult than its initial release.

Secondly, the book reads like a technical manual at times, as though the help files from XP have been trimmed out and put into the book. Hence, the writing still is not very effective for those who need real life scenarios (which are exactly in the exam) instead of dry step by step instructions.

Where the book does have strong points is that it's errata page has only a few minor errors, so what it says, it says right.

Also, the included practice exams are a VERY BIG help if you are studying for this exam. Created by Measure Up, if you were to buy a Measure Up product directly from them, it would be very expensive. You should then consider buying this book simply because the included exams and questions will help you ALOT more than the book itself to pass the exam.

I recommend the XP Professional FAST PASS in addition to this book for it cover areas where this book falls short, and also the Fast Pass book explains things much easier on the mind than this book, and has great tables and charts for tricky areas.

Finally, I recommend you get hold of another practice exam provider. It is always a good idea to use a different provider than the one your book came with. Why? Because the objective questions will not be worded specifically to the content of the book (meaning that another provider will test you on exam objectives, not on whether you remember what's in the book or not) and also the wording of the questions will be different, so you will extra prepared should anything hit you that aren't familiar with.

My final advice to all of you wanting to take this test is this: Please do not rely on a single source for the Microsoft exams. They are nothing like CompTIA exams or other exams on which you can do this.

Great book, lot of detail..

Written by MS for their 70-270 exam. With a number of years worth of past experience under my belt and having taken the A+ and N+ I still got to lean and relearn a lot from this book. It's packed with information, not always organized in the best way then again your talking about an OS that touches on so many other OS', domains and of course throw networks into the mix as well and a lot more! For the novice first time going into this exam I'd highly recommend a secondary source of information.

The 15% off voucher wouldn't work when trying to book my test? No matter what I did it refused to accept the voucher and I ended up paying full price. It could be because I used a "Second Shot" voucher as well. Second Shot is an offer by Microsoft that lets you retake the test in the event you fail for free. The trail of Windows XP is excellent for those wanting to run it in a VM or Virtual PC so you can "break" the virtual OS and leave your production machine intact. Very good when teamed up with a trial of Windows Server 2003.. then you get your own virtual domain complete with all the settings.. well at least for a few months.

Great Resource

I used this book along with the Exam Cram 70-270 book (ISBN 0789733609). I just passed the exam with a score of 889 on 12-24-08. This book definitely helps alot, but you will need more. No one book touches on every subject, so it is good to get 1 or 2 additional ones to help. I suggest doing external reading for IIS and Terminal Services, because this book barely touched upon either. If your an absolutely beginner, the book introduces XP Pro SP2 very well, and very easy to understand. If your not a beginner, it is still great because it delves deep into some of the features XP Pro has. My only big gripe with the book was that it did not come with resource CD (which had around 300 practice questions, all of which were way harder than the actual exam), and it took Microsoft around 3 months to ship it to me.

Study hard, and you will pass. This book will definitely help you along the way. Well worth the money

Lacking DOM features

This book is a good beginner level Java Script text. It covers all the basics rather well and comes with a nice disc full of example files. However there is very little coverage on DOM implementation. For me it seems almost pointless to use Java Script without the DOM. If you are looking to actually implement Java Script with lots of form access and manipulation, then this is not a good book to get. It is a good book to get if you are just interested in the semantics of Java Script.

This book was a great for a beginner to Java Script. The exercises were easy to follow and were relevant to real world problems that you may need to solve. The author keeps things lite and keeps the material interesting. Not only is this written for beginners with little to no programing experience (like me) but I can definitely see coming back to this book as a reference as I continue developing with Java Script!

Great Book for scripters of any level!

I'll agree with Chris from Minneapolis. This is a great book no matter what level of scripting experience you have. I had/have very little java scripting experience and with this book, it's very simple to learn in a fashion that is geared more toward real-life situations, vs. just some script that a professor or teacher wants you to write that has no meaning besides giving you work to do. GREAT BOOK, RECOMMENDED TO ANYONE OF ANY LEVEL OF SCRIPTING EXPERIENCE!

A Developer's Keep

First off, this book is for all those db developers who have good working knowledge of SQL Server along with a keen interest in using other microsoft technologies to play around with the database. The book is nicely dissected into 3 parts. The first 2 parts are geared towards core SQL development. The 3rd part covers new tools of integration and new technologies that are enriching the SQL landscape.

Chapter 1 is a full-blown coverage of the new SSDT introduced in SQL Server 2012. This chapter is for core developers who often find themselves juggling between tools for SQL as well as .net development. As SSDT is hosted within the visual studio, there is now a single development environment to work from.

Chapter 2 covers new T-SQL features and enhancements brought in by SQL Server 2012. Each feature is nicely treated with some good examples.

Chapter 3 goes deep into discussing SQL CLR. This highly underutilized feature within SQL Server was touted to be the next big thing. Hopefully after reading the chapter, you will feel the same and be encouraged to take advantage of it.
Chapters 4 & 5 cover transactions and SQL security. Both have been highly misunderstood areas and the chapters do complete justice to them.

Chapters 6, 7, 8 & 9 covers all the non-relational features that are making SQL an enterprise level product. Features like XML integration, Hierarchical data manipulation, file streaming and
geospatial support equip SQL Server with tomorrow's technology. These features are powerful and very intuitive to use.

Chapters 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 & 15 cover different aspects of SQL programming. Mobile and cloud computing have becomes buzzwords and SQL is enabling developers to tap into those areas. .Net has quickly become the leading software development platform and these chapters help SQL developers get familiarized and productive on it.
To summarize, the book is very well written and covers lot of ground. It should be of immense help to novice as well as seasoned db developers. I recommend it to everyone.

Programming SQL Server 2012

If you're looking for a book that gives you plenty of starting points for programming against the various data access APIs available to MS SQL Server using .NET while learning something about some of the new tools and features available to MS SQL Server 2012, including SQL Server Data Tools, then this book is a good place to start. My only complaint: when this review went to press, the companion website and accompanying code samples were non-existent, yet they're referenced on several occasions; a little frustrating.

Part One of the book, "Core SQL Server Development", kicks off with a description of the new SQL Server Data Tools and its declarative, model based development approach, which utilizes an "in-memory representation of what the database looks like". This permits a developer to work against something beside the database, all from inside the project explorer in Visual Studio, then deploy to the real thing.

Chapter two of the book illustrates the latest T-SQL additions, which include improved "windowing" using the OVER clause, new functions, improvements to THROW, "server-side result set paging with OFFSET and FETCH NEXT", "sequential number generation with the SEQUENCE object", and "metadata discovery". Even in the absence of the downloadable code samples, there are plenty of samples in the pages of the book to keep you off the streets.

Chapter Three does a good job showing the reader the degree to which Visual Studio and SQL Server are integrated and how a developer can host SQL Server Database Projects in Visual Studio, and the next chapter goes on to give a thorough explanation of Transactions and a review of the ACID properties for added context. Chapter Five lists the "four themes" of the security framework of SQL Server: Secure by Design, Default, Deployment, and Communications. Later, some of the attack methods that hackers use to molest SQL Server are shared with the reader, also for additional context.

Part Two, which spans Chapters 6 through 9, describes situations where storing XML in the database might be the best option, despite the objections of "database purists". The FOR XML commands are introduced here, along with several other XML features used for programming against SQL Server, like XQuery, OPENXML, and FOR XML PATH. In Chapter Seven, the authors demonstrate the usefulness and best practices for the hierarchyid data type. Chapter Eight gives us a very informative lesson on the reasons for Native File Streaming and how it provides us with the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of file system and database storage at the same time. In addition, it introduces us to the FileTable, which is a new feature in SQL Server 2012 that "builds on FILESTREAM", and "combines hierarchyid and the Windows file system API to deliver exciting new BLOB capabilities in SQL Server." Chapter 9 explores spatial data support in SQL Server with a couple of examples that work with the geometry and geography data types and their associated methods, then goes on to introduce new spatial classes like circular strings, compound curves and curve polygons. The chapter ends with a Bing Mash-Up application.

Part Three of the book encompasses six more chapters and starts off with a rundown of the .NET data access APIs--ADO.NET, LINQ, and the Entity Framework, with close attention paid to DataSets, including a discussion defending their continued relevance. Chapter Eleven moves on to WCF and is packed with sample code for building and extending data services and RIA services using REST and OData. This is the chapter where Silverlight makes its appearance.

Chapters 12 and 13 move to the cloud. I liked these chapters for their complete description of the subject. The authors cover what the cloud actually is, which is a discussion that actually begins in Chapter One, all the way to SQL Azure pricing plans and screen shots of the management portal. Also included in these chapters is a discussion of the importance of BACPACS and DACPACS, which are the deployment units generated by SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT). SQL Azure Federations, SQL Azure "Data Sync" and Windows Phone 7 development are also examined, complete with a description of the "characteristics of an occasionally connected system" and how to create one.

The book finishes with two chapters (14 and 15) of discourse on the subject of SQL Server's business intelligence stack, which is what drew me to the book in the first place. Included in this final section are brief summaries of each tool, and finally, a description of the new "enhancements to PowerPivot" and "the introduction of column store technologies to SQL Server".

SQL Server 2012, finally, a database we can all enjoy.

The problem of selecting a database reference book is that most of the material will not be related to your area of interest. Practically no one is trying to get a fifth reference on normalizing a database and writing a SQL query. What we want is a book that has some depth and gives you a decent look into the proper use of new features and a new perspective or two with new code examples.

I can say that this book is one of Microsoft's better renditions of a user manual for it's latest database. This is a very good thing, because the 2008 R2 database had some peculiar gotchas and jams when runnning slightly advanced queries and special applications. Along with many other programmers, who didn't want to make a career out of database design, we wanted better reliability of operation and much better documentation for the new 2012 database. This book goes a long way in the desired direction.

Especially welcome sections were: Table Valued Parameters(TVPs), modern date-time convenient storage formats, data encryption and security, spacial data enhancements, and stored parameter design and testing. Microsoft databases have lagged behind PostgreSQL databases and others for years because they didn't have anything similar to an array column type. TVPs may finally alleviate this issue and a good discussion about this solution is gratefully accepted. The date-time conversion operations make handling this vital area of database interaction much clearer. The use of proper security of databases has long been a poorly documented issue and the more thorough presentation of it in Chapter 5 is well worth reading. Chapter 9 answers some long awaited questions on the use of spacial data. Previous references were very lax on this matter and I now believe that I can manage the design of custom geographical areas and navigational routes that my customers are looking to see in their map projections. Also very welcome is the coverage on stored procedures in the overall design. All programmers have a different view from DBAs about how to design them and apply them. It's very good to get an inside look from Microsoft's point of view to help us make this task more complete without trying out numerous approaches.

I have a number of books on using Microsoft databases from 2003 onward. This book is clearly one of the better efforts. It gets my best mark.
