Great WCF 4 Book

This is a good resource for learning WCF. It covers a ton of topics and they are shown in the context of real world applications.

The book starts out with a few chapters introducing WCF and Hosting possibilities.

It then contains chapter on securing an enterprise (intranet) as well as what it takes to secure a service exposed to the internet. These are great chapters, but a little confusing when it comes to the certificate deployment to the clients. I also would have like to have seen how to specifically secure Ajax and WPF clients over the internet.

The book then covers transactions, reliable sessions, performance, discovery, routing, REST, asynchronous operations, workflows, state, and data contracts.

The main thing I like about the book is the attempt to show real world situations.

The main thing I thought the book could use was some diagrams (UML or whatever) to help describe the execution of some of the code being explained and to help show some context. I would have also liked to see a complete chapter on just configuration. None of the books I have seen on WCF have very good details on configuration.

The code samples are well organized and very usable.

This is a book that must be read. It is not a quick reference. That is not a bad thing, the explanations are thorough, just not in a quick look up format.

All in all I recommend reading this book. It contains a ton of information and is one of the better WCF 4 books available.

Excellent flow and generates understanding

I've been looking for a good WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) 4.0 book for a while. When I read the other reviews it seemed clear those books were not what I was looking for. I'm only beginning the 2nd chapter and have skimmed the book. This book provides not only easy to follow examples (which you can download) but explains context. This is not a "reference manual" or just a "recipie book".
When you are done with the first chapter, you will have implemented a service, created a client to consume it, and then hosted it inside an IIS application. The author uses the simplest approach for things such as data access so that in several clicks you have your data access setup. That way you can focus on learning WCF.

I've actually written several WCF services but never felt I really understood what was going on. As a result I was making some tasks far more difficult than they needed to be. I'm confident that when I'm done with this book that will all change.

I'll update this if my rating changes after I get further into the book.

I'm glad I heeded the warnings of others and waited for this book.

Good, intermediate level book for WCF

Hi, This book is about WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) which is Microsoft's API for building SOA (service oriented application) infrastructures. SOA is very important because todays devices (especially tablets, smartphones, IPADS). all need to make HTTP calls to some URL addressable endpoint, whether it be SOAP based, REST based or just simple HTTP xml services. HTTP over TCP/IP is the universal transport mechanism for all these web-enabled devices. Lest we forget, SOA's also can serve as the building blocks for calls to get data for websites, Silverlight or FLASH based apps as well.

I am very interested in SOA architectures and believe that they are very important to any organization's IT department as a mechanism to eventually have "building blocks" of services which make the application of business logic or some type of workflow process easier to consistently apply this logic across the organization.
It also allows organizations to more rapidly build applications because once you have an SOA architecture in place, these services can be called from any client-side environment such as a web page, mobile device, tablet or whatever else may come down the pike.

Another key advantage is the fact that SOA's usually use standardized data exchange formats such as XML or JSON so that different devices from different manufacturers (android/IOS/Blackberry/Windows Phone) all can understand the data while abstracting away concepts such as operating system type or CPU architecture etc.. In other words, SOA's when correctly built are platform agnostic.
The first several chapters of the book cover pretty much what you would expect from any WCF book, things like what WCF is, what is SOA, how and where can WCF be hosted (for example WCF is designed to be very flexible, the services built within WCF can be hosted in IIS, run as a windows service and can also use different protocols (HTTP, TCP/IP, PEER to PEER) and also can be secured in a variety of ways (WINDOWS security, FORMS authentication, SSL certificates, custom authentication hooks)).
Fairly complex topics such as service endpoints, hosting services, bindings, fault propagation are covered in an easy to understand manner in the first couple of chapters.
Chapters 4 and 5 deal with a critical topic which is how to protect your services (authentication and authorization). These chapters do a pretty good job of describing the challenges for services that may be hosted on an internal corporate network as opposed to services which will be URL accessible across the internet. These topics are critical to the success of any SOA architecture because if you do not have a way of identifying and granting access to who may call your services, you can run the risk of exposing your data in a manner which you did not intend to. Remember, these SOA architectures are exposed as http endpoints across the world wide web! Make sure you understand security implications before you get too far. In my opinion implementing SSL for your service endpoints exposed in the WWW is a must for most organizations unless you have in mind very simple services such as returning the current temperature for a given zip code (in other words, things that you do not necessarily want secured, maybe something like the time a movie is showing at a particular theatre).

One topic dealing with authentication/authorization is called federated (claims based authentication/authorization). This was given very little coverage in the book, I can understand why though, because there are entire books written about the subject. I did find it disappointing that so little mention was made of federated (claims based authentication/authorization). For excellent coverage of this topic look for the book titled Programming Windows Identity Foundation by Vittorio Bertocci.

Chapter 6 deals with service contracts and data contracts which are a way of structuring your WCF programming. Service contracts describe the operations your service supports (it basically defines an implementation interface) and data contracts are important because that is how you get the "platform neutrality" that maximizes the usage of your WCF services. In prior programming projects using regular "web services"), I was guilty of sending back very .net specific data structures such as ado.net datasets. In today's world, it's much more critical that you use data contracts (and data members) which will cause WCF to generate very neutral generic return data structures that are recognizable by all platforms. This is because today we see the rise of android, IOS (ipad), Windows Phone, java devices, blackberry etc... The future will see the advent of many more connected devices, some we have not yet even dreamed of as of yet.

Chapter 7 deals with WCF state and how to preserve state, usually http based services are stateless, but there are ways of persisting session state between calls.

Chapter 8 brings into the picture, mind blowing power which comes from integrating WCF with Windows Workflow foundation services, which is a true workflow API built into the .net framework, this is how you can truly build stateful service calls built upon the concept of "workflows" by using the workflow engine. The windows workflow engine can persist a workflow inside of sql server and "rehydrate" that workflow right back where it left off, very powerful!
The rest of the book covers topics such as transactional processing with WCF services, reliable sessions and asynchronous calls. There is a nice chapter (Chapter 13) on how to support features such as service throttling, MTOM protocol (sending binary objects efficiently across HTTP) and streaming data (such as video streaming).

Chapter 15 has a nice chapter on RESTFUL services based upon ODATA (AKA WCF data services). I read this chapter and got a lot of useful information about it, as mentioned many of these chapters are topics that actually have whole books written about them. WCF by default is SOAP based, but it also supports the concept of building REST services. I encourage you to read more about REST services, because I believe ultimately most SOA's are going to be built using this type of architecture. As a matter of fact, for those of you interested in SharePoint, SharePoint 2010 now has a REST based callable SOA based upon WCF data services. It has a few quirks, but once I understood it, I was amazed at how powerful and easy to use the SharePoint REST based API is.
Not covered at all is another WCF based technology called WCF RIA services, which is mostly used from what I have seen in Silverlight projects. I was a little disappointed that no mention was made of this technology, at least a paragraph or two should have been included.
There is also an exciting new WCF based api they are calling WCF web api which was too new for the author to include in this book, I am following this WCF web api because it looks very promising, I predict really powerful and useful things to come from this WCF web api.

CONCLUSION
All in all, I would consider this book an intermediate level book on WCF, the book gives a nice overview of WCF although it's missing a few topics I would have liked to at least have seen mentioned. I did like the REST chapter of the book a lot, because you would be surprised how many WCF books don't even deal with REST at all.
Certainly I would highly recommend this book as a gateway to other more detailed WCF books such as Juval Lowy's excellent Programming WCF services book, there are several very nice O'Reilly books that cover REST.
The author does a good job at covering WCF at a high level, but with some good levels of detail. The topic of WCF could easily cover thousands of pages, so the author should be commended at being able to produce a good, intermediate level WCF book with the amount of space he had to work with (700 pages).
I do like this book and give it 4.5 out of 5 stars and recommend it.

Be better called Programming Windows GUI with C# :)

This book is for neither .NET/C# programming language nor Windows Operating System. It focuses on Windows GUI programming.
It only spends about 40 pages on C# language basics, and also, it never mentions COM/COM+, which are very important features for Windows platform.
This is the best reference book for windows forms and .Net GDI+ programming. It spends 1200+ pages to introduce all those Graphic and UI stuff in a C# way. If you are a UI programmer, this book is nothing but a must buy! It includes everything you need to know about .NET/C# GUI programming.
But, if what you are looking for is some C# language reference, please refer to C# Primer: A Practical Approach by Stanley B. Lippman or Progamming C#. If what you want is a detail look into .NET platform/CLR, refer to Compiling for the .NET Common Language Runtime.

Destined to become a classic

This is one of the most carefully constructed books on programming that I've ever read. The book builds a doggedly focused exposition of .NET Windows Forms from the ground up, and within that subject, there is very little missing here. Further, any diversions are relegated to three superbly organized appendices on Files and Streams, math functions, and string handling, three areas which rich client windows programmers have to have good mastery of anyhow. When I say that Petzold builds his subject from the ground up, I mean that the book can and should be read like "War and Peace, " from beginning to end without skipping anything. Even if you think you understand the basics, I'd be very surprised if you didn't gain important insights you might have missed before, even from the early and elementary chapters. Virtually nothing is presupposed and your knowledge is build up, block by block. After studying this book, you will understand exactly what is happening in a .NET Windows Forms application. Other books take a shotgun approach, throwing stuff at you that may work, but without providing the background to understand what is happening beneath the sheets. Petzold does not let Visual C# generate code automatically. Visual Studio provides a lot of visual tools and wizards for quickly designing dialog box layouts and generating code frameworks, but Petzold wants you to understand what is really going on, so everything is hand-coded in this book. This can either be a warning to you, or an invitation to those who want a deep understanding of how a Windows Form is really put together. I'd say, do it Petzold's way first, and after you've mastered the foundations of Windows Forms, use the visual tools to save time when your now superior perspective can do so without running the risk of not understanding something the visual tools did that isn't quite working right and you don't have the depth of understanding to quickly zero in on the cause.
There is virtually nothing in this book that is not focused on .NET Windows Forms using C#. Mercifully, VB.NET isn't even mentioned. Also, you won't find diversionary chapters on ADO.NET or ASP.NET. The book treats Windows Forms basics (from the classic "Hello, World", through essential data structures and basic text output), and then alternates the chapters between topics on graphics (GDI+) and user interface elements (mouse, keyboard, timers, buttons, menus, toolbars, etc.). GDI+ is an enhancement to the old GDI and the book contains uncompromising chapters on such graphical topics as Bezier curves and other splines, including all the necessary mathematical background. In the chapter on Pages and Transforms, he presents* all the mathematical background necessary to perform the linear transformations needed to utilize the GDI+ graphical transforms. This is what I mean about uncompromising. He doesn't avoid topics in the .NET Windows Forms classes because they might require a little college algebra that most of us have probably forgotten. He just dives right in and presents everything necessary to come to grips with the deepest .NET classes in Windows Forms. About the only subject he doesn't treat is Image Color Management, a topic so vast it really deserves a book of its own (although "Windows 2000 Graphics API Black Book" has an excellent chapter on the Win32 API).
With such an exhaustive treatment of his subject matter, you might think this book might be pretty dry reading. Not true. Petzold writes with supreme confidence and wry wit, never cloying, always with just the right touch. This book is fun reading, his enthusiasm for his subject matter always in evidence, even when he's exhaustively presenting the methods of a class or an enumeration. You can tell he is having a ball.
There are lots of tables and code in the book. The code is available on an included CD. A minor problem I had is that sometimes the Beta 2 produced a bunch of "System.Byte not defined in the workspace" errors. If this happens to you, just choose Yes when it asks if you want to go ahead anyhow. The applications still work.
His examples are short and are easily typed in by hand, something Petzold recommends anyhow. The way I worked with this book was to embellish little programs of my own anyhow, trying out the facilities he was expositing within my own framework. I probably learned even more taking this approach rather than using his examples literally.
So overall, it is hard to imagine that this book could ever be surpassed. This book deservers an extra rosette, beyond the five stars for those extremely rare computer books that are destined to become a classic teaching a whole generation of programmers.

Programming Microsoft Windows with C#: A Core Reference
As expected, book is an excellent work but title is misleading. I've read the entire book and this is what I found:
1. Excellent book for beginners to write Windows programming with simple Windows controls including brushes, pens, text and fonts, keyboard and mouse events, times, scroll bars, menus, dialog boxes, toolbars and status bars, tree view, list view and printing.
2. Book is well written in a tutorail way, easy to understand.
3. Not much for an advanced developer. If you're looking for some advanced stuff, you may be disappointed.
Overall a must have for .NET beginners and intermediate developers.

A good book

This book is a refreshing alternative to the usual 900 page everything-and-the-kitchen sink tomes that seem to dominate this genre.

Instead, it is focused and concise (200+ pages). And extremely well-written, by someone who clearly takes his teaching role seriously. Beyond just describing how to use the window functions, it does a great job of delving into the background needed to really understand how & why they work as they do.

In addition to describing SQL Server 2012 support for window functions, the book also details those areas in which full support for standard SQL window functions has not yet been implemented in SQL Server. It also suggests improvements that could be made to both the standard and to MS SQL.

Whenever possible, the book gives alternative queries constructed without the use of window functions. This is great as both a learning tool, and to convince you that in general you don't really want to go that route (non-window) if at all possible.

If you want to learn both the subtleties and quotidian uses of SQL window functions, get this book. Your brain will light up with new possibilities.

(If it helps credibility-wise, check out my mostly negative review of the same author's "Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2005: T-SQL Programming"--I am the proud holder of the "Most Helpful Critical Review" honor for that title. Ben-Gan's lucidity has increased considerably with this current effort.)

Good One for Specific Requirement

One of the good "Cheat" book I came across. Yes, I agree with many that there is no doubt Itzik Ben-Gan is one of the great T-SQL experts in the industry. Initially I thought many of the functions he described cannot be used in OLTP model. Very quickly I realized I was wrong to some extent, I had to identify duplicate entries and Islands and the queries were right there. But I think I will stick to my Original Comment - the book is very specific for certain window function as the title suggests which are - ranking, distribution, ordering, getting ranges, gaps, island, duplicates, running totals, packing intervals, aggregates and finally optimizing them. Ofcourse that's what the title suggest (Window Functions..) and is very well concised in 200 odd pages when compared to 900 or so in other books. Actually I was expecting - to know different alternatives for creating such functions, which I did not find much. There is a mention of CLR, but one should be good with .NET coding. My final conclusion would be go for the book in case you have to deal a lot with analytical type of coding. This is the book, where we can simply use the proven logic.

Worthwhile Subject

Since I actually used the sample chapters to solve a problem with updating all duplicate rows except the first duplicate in a set of duplicates I thought I should break down and buy the book. I consider it somewhat of a brain twister and will use this to further my query expertise. I am one of those DBA's that has so many instances to manage that I rarely ever get to do any coding for many years now. I am hoping this helps bring back some, and develope new, skills. I also decided to get the fundamentals book and will switch between the 2.
For now i will give this 5 stars but I still think it could be made simpler and more practical for us 'regular' users. I will say the accuracy of the book and samples seems pretty good so far which is nice since it can be annoying when you run into samples you are trying to learn from that don't work in some articles by other authors I have read. This authors material and books seem very accurate.
I wonder if regular expressions would be useful with these functions?

Helpful in passing 70-649 exam

I recently passed the 70-649 exam with good scores and this book, 70-648/70-649 Transitioning Your MCSA/MCSE to Windows Server 2008 Trainng Kit, was very helpful. However the text of this book alone, nor any other, most likely would not allow one to pass the 70-649 exam that covers a lot of territory via 3 in 1 exam. But if you have several hours [let's say over 100] minimum hands on experience with Windows 2008 exploring it's capabilities and developing expertise for, either on the job or in your training lab, including Active Directory and Roles/Features covered by the exam and remember most of what you learned obtaining your MCSE 2003 you are well on your way to passing the 70-649.

The labs in the book were helpful if you do not have hands on with the topic or want more in depth as were the URL links to additional info sources if you feel you want more detail as configuration info in some cases was sparse BUT keep in mind that there are entire dedicated books covering topics on most of the chapters in this book . Some of the topics such as ADFS and ADRM are very complicated. I did not do the labs in total for those, other then installing the roles and configuring them as much as I could, but read through them until I understood what was being accomplished. The questions on the exam for those topics did not expect you to know configuration in great detail but you need to know in general what they are used for, high level how they work, the flow of the processes, and how authentication is accomplished.

The exam focuses heavily on what is new with Windows 2008 and assumes you have retained your MCSE 2003 knowledge about networking, DNS, Group Policy, Active Directory, forests, global catalog server, trusts, sites, replication, etc. If not I suggest you also study with the Microsoft Press books for 70-640 and 70-642 or if you want some extra reinforcement on those topics.

I found that IPV6 in the book to be a bit overwhelming as in "do I really need to know how to subnet IPV6 and all the interim solutions such as Toredo". There were no hard IPV6 questions on the exam and I believe I had only 1 question. Knowing basics such as what is the IPV6 equivalent of an IPV4 private/public/APIPA address and how to troubleshoot IPV6 connectivity using basically same tools you use for IPV4.

I found the chapter on IIS7 very helpful in learning the new management interface, which has been totaly revamped, and new features such as management delegation and additional configuration for application pools such as recycling, and was all that was needed for the exam. There were also plenty of command line examples for IIS7 and other topics throughout the book and you will see a fair amount of those on the exam where you need to choose the correct command for a task.

The exam places great emphasis on security including what remote solutions need only port 443 TCP open in the firewall, certificates needed for SSL and implementing client trust for such certificates, solutions for revoked certificates, which authentication methods use certificates, CA types and hierarchy to use, distributing certificates to internal and external computers/users, Terminal Services, minimizing risk of having a domain controller in a branch office, and when to use ipsec/EFS/Bit Locker for a stated scenario and which one accomplishes the task. I felt the book did a good job covering those topics.

In addition to this book it would be well worth your while to study Microsoft documentation on what is new in Windows 2008, and individual what is new papers such as for Terminal Services. I felt that I easily got my moneys worth with this study guide.

EDIT 09/05/09: I recently completed my MCITP for Server Administrator and Enterprise Administrator. As the Microsoft Press books mention using Hyper-V to create virtual machines was extremely helpful in my learning process. I found that the ASRock A780GXE mainboard [around $80] with the latest bios update and using a AMD Phenom II quad core processor worked great for Hyper-V and has 4 RAM sockets. Don't assume any modern mainboard or processor will support Hyper-V. Hyper-V is easy to learn. Just remember to install the Hyper-V Integration Services on any guest OS you install right after the install to get networking and the mouse to work correctly! I believe you also need SP2 for W2003 and SP3 for XP for Integrations Services to install.

Spotty writing, missing a lot of material

About myself: I've been an MCSE for 10 years. I'm also a CCNA, RHCE and CISSP. I've had to read a *lot* of manuals and study guides over the years.

I'm a fan of the Microsoft training books and have found them to be excellent resources for preparing for Microsoft certification exams. I originally ordered the Syngress book while waiting for MS finally print theirs...Unfortunately, this book is far below the standard that has been set by its predecessors.

After only 3 chapters, I'm about to toss this book into the nearest wood chipper and go back to using the Syngress one.

Chapter 1 dives straight into IPv6 and breathlessly screams through a very brief description on what it's capable of, Microsoft's implementation of it, notation, scope.... it leaves a lot to be desired.

If you're studying for this exam and using this book, do find supplementary material on IPv6- you'll need it.

Chapter 3 is a complete abortion, and where I found myself thinking that I wasted $45. The instructions on setting up VPN is confusing for it references screens and options that I couldn't find for the life of me. It also fails to mention until MUCH further down the chapter that adding roles to RRAS requires deactivating the service and unconfiguring it. If you're following along with the book, you're going to be wondering how the hell to "Bring up the RRAS Wizard".

Details into NPS is similarly scant, and doesn't go into detail, leaving a LOT of questions unanswered. It seemed more of a "do this, this and this, and hey! it works!". It's stuff like this that devalues the MCSE - excuse me, MCTS now- and why there's tons of "paper MCSEs" walking around that know only how to do whatever was in the book they read.

By the time I got to the scenario questions, I just about gave up in disgust. The second scenario question asks about setting up 802.1x for a company with standalone servers... unfortunately there was ZERO mention of how to set up standalone servers. The answer to the scenario question offered some hints, but I had to go reading through a MS blog entry to figure out what was going on.

Do yourselves a favor- even if you're going to buy this book anyway, don't let this be your only study guide.

Don't waste your money

I'm sure this book might have been useful when the exam first came out, however, MS has changed the exams. Currently, about 40% of the exam is based on new features that come in Windows 2008 R2 for example Direct Access. I took the exam and failed it, using this book was a huge mistake. It is good in that it gives you the concepts and instructions for being a good windows 2008 administrator/architect, but it does not prepare you for the exam. This book does not have any of the new material from windows 2008 R2.

Helpful Guidance

This useful book provides experienced-based guidance concerning how to use visual models to rigorously identify, capture, and validate software requirements. The authors provide a comprehensive language of visual models that has been used successfully on many real-world, large-scale projects. The book has many features - for example, exercises (and answers) to help you practice the application of the suggested techniques; guidance for the techniques concerning "When to Use", "When Not to Use", and "Common Mistakes"; a useful glossary; a detailed index; and appendices. The book is very readable and understandable. In my judgment, it will produce positive results for any reader who takes the time and effort to apply the advice.

Much Needed Adoption-Focused Resource

The refreshing aspect of this book is that it embraces meaningful adoption -- not only by the practitioners creating the models but also for those who needs to consume and respond. In reality requirements practices remain surprisingly immature across most organizations, despite years of focus by the experts, standards organization, and industry leaders on better ways to define and communicate requirements that will address fundamental points of failure with projects. Eventhough we know better as a profession, the gap is still in sustained adoption of better ways of working. Sustained adoption of practices that deliver better requirements is ultimately dependent on leadership commitment, the capability of the requirements practitioner, the appropriateness of technique, and whether or not the consumers are prepared to consume.

Setting the usage context for each technique in "layman's terms" as reflected in this book is a great way to break down communication barriers to facilitate understanding, usage, and sustained adoption. Joy and Tony have given us an excellent tool that practitioners and consumers at all levels will find useful in helping their organization embrace and benefit from visual modeling. I am recommending this much needed resource to my clients and colleagues who are committed to Requirements practice improvements and the ultimate benefit to project outcomes!

Much needed for the industry!

This is a needed book for the industry!
There is something new to learn for everyone

If you are new to being a BA or new to structured modeling start with chapter 1, read through and do the exercises in chapters 2-24. If you are experienced with modeling, read chapter 1, then chapter 25, then the chapters in between as they drive your interest. Chapters 2- 24 are great to refresh and and learn even more about the models you may already use and some new ones to try out.

Chapter 1 is a great level setting of how business analysis for software development has changes over the years and why visuals are so important!

Chapters 2-24 are great for learning all about various models and how they make software projects successful. These chapters have great templates (also downloadable), examples and exercises to practice! My favorite is the Common Mistakes section for each model helping BAs self correct and identify when they are going down the wrong path.

Chapter 25 - Puts together which models to use when and on what types of projects, so helpful to planning for our projects!

Glaring omissions from the obviously unedited text

I don't know if this is characteristic of "Microsoft Press" books, but I'm really disappointed at the quality of the book so far. I've run into numerous instances where I'll read about a new feature in Windows 2012 and then the book goes into detail about the Windows 2008 feature and doesn't explain the new Windows 2012 feature.

What's SHOCKING is that they'll literally ask questions in the "Objective Review" about content that isn't in the chapter. Basically they took a book on Windows Server 2008 and it seems multiple people updated and edited it and the people didn't talk to each other. So one section refers to another section that doesn't exist, etc.

The only reason I didn't give this book 1 star is because I'm continuing to go use it as it is an EASY READ---but its value is highly suspect. How can I feel prepared for the exam when the poultry 5 questions per section ALWAYS contain content that ISN'T COVERED in the section? If it's worth questioning me about in the review, shouldn't it be covered in the chapter?

Additionally, while this book has the same title as the "Training Guide" by the same publisher, the two books are laid out completely differently so they aren't a natural fit for each other.

Not for beginners looking to pass exam

Took and passed the exam today 4/30/2013. If your an experienced IT Professional looking to up your certification level to include the 2012 track, this book is not for you. It will give you the basic differences between 2008 server products and the 2012 product but at an extremely high level. There is not enough detail to rely on this book to help you pass the exam. This is a 'sectional overview' based on the exam topics. If you are new to the certification world and to IT administration i could see where this book could be helpful to get your feet wet. Having said that, your not going to have enough knowledge to deploy a solid environment with this information. Back to the exam relevance, it was not at all geared toward helping you pass the exam. Technet has gotten a lot better over the years as an additional reference as well as a trancender type product to get you in the right mindset to pass the exam. P.S. Know your powershell!

Not going to teach you to pass the exam

This is a good book.

It covers the topics of the 70-410 exam. It gives you a good, general overview of the topics. For an already established administrator, it may even fill in some small holes in your knowledge. For newcomers, it might touch a little to lightly on topics and only cause confusion.

As an example -- while studying one objective, it may introduce a more advanced concept. This is due to the nature of the material, and not necessarily the fault of the author. As an example, early on in the book, there are many references to Group Policy, which is the last chapter of the book. Someone not familiar with group policy might get hung up, but someone familiar with group policy might pick up a small bit of information. Someone who has mastered group policy will find it a complete waste.

If you are buying this book to help study for the 70-410 exam, please consider another one. While the content is good, it is a very, very high level and does not give you even half of what you need to know to pass the 70-410 exam. You won't find many topics in the book, such as VPN, RRAS, or advanced Hyper-V features. Since these topics make up a large portion of the exam, you'll be very surprised if you master the information in the book and then attempt to take the exam: you will fail.
