Okay for absolute beginner
By Thomas H. Currier
Not bad, but definitely for absolute beginners, and some materials not truly oop oriented. Very little coverage of database applications or web applications; out of step with current development.

Good Book for Beginners
By David Hayden
Overall, a solid book on learning ASP.NET MVC for beginners. The first half of the book introduces you to the basics of ASP.NET MVC and the ASP.NET MVC pipeline. It discusses routing, views, view engines, view helpers, the anatomy of a request, model binding, validation, HTML and AJAX Forms, display/editor templates, and other basics to give you a taste of the overall request-response nature of ASP.NET MVC and the major players in the MVC pipeline.

The last half of the book looks at more application-wide features and extensibility in ASP.NET MVC. Dino talks about leveraging a lot of the ASP.NET Intrinsic features, like session state, authentication, caching, and other ASP.NET features. He also dives into the extensibility of ASP.NET MVC like the new IDependencyResolver in ASP.NET MVC 3 as well as developing your own filters, actionresults, model binders, etc. The very end discusses unit testing ASP.NET MVC.

If you are a beginning ASP.NET MVC developer that just needs to know the facts and not interested in reading about the development of an end-to-end sample or application throughout the book, you will find Programming ASP.NET MVC 2nd Edition informative. If, on the other hand, you are looking for an ASP.NET MVC book that introduces you to ASP.NET MVC concepts as you develop an application, you may not enjoy the book as much. It really only discusses ASP.NET MVC concepts piece-meal, which means you never truly leverage the features of ASP.NET MVC to build an end-to-end ASP.NET MVC application in the book.

Excellent book about the machanics of MVC
By Heribert Pfeiffer
I'm a beginner of MVC and already read Professional ASP.NET MVC 3 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer). I chose "Programming Microsoft ASP.NET MVC" as my second reading deliberately to delve a bit deeper into the framework and I'm completely satisfied in this regard.

For me it is very important to learn about the "why" and "how" the framework is doing all the magical work behind the scenes. The step-by-step guides available in the web are nice to get a first impression but only after reading this book I now feel confident to be able starting to leverage the possibilities the MVC framework offers to me.

Dino Esposito explicitly points out at the third page that "the ideal reader of this book should not be looking for a step-by-step guide to ASP.NET MVC. The book `s aim is to explain the mechanics of the framework and effective ways to use it." This goal is achieved very well to my point of view. Therefore the reading of the book will help me a lot for my work, and hence it gets 5 stars.

Good Coverage of MVC3 for Design and Programming
By G. van Staden
This is an ideal book for a programmer who has experience in programming using ASP .Net web-forms and wants to master MVC3 in terms of development and designing applications that use it. Unlike the run-of-the-mill "teach yourself MVC3" style books, this book gives delves deeper into the mechanisms within and design principles behind MVC3.

The entire gambit of MVC3 is covered of course. The chapter on Controllers was one of my favourites, I like the explanation of Asynchronous Controllers it really helps you consider the multi-user environment in which MVC applications operate. The chapter on Client-Side JavaScript was a nice bonus and sufficient to get a novice up-and-running with jQuery.

The architectural perspective provided in this book is what makes it stand-out. After discussing what MVC3 is, the book takes it further by helping you understand how to design applications in a way that best uses MVC3 features. Some important design considerations are put forward in the MVC Software Design Section, I learned a lot from this section and it helped me in the design of some of my projects.

Programmers new to .Net and especially ASP, should read this in conjunction with some introductory book on the subject. The coverage of the topic is at a more advanced level helping experienced programmers master MVC3 implementation and design.

Excellent guide through the WPF thicket
By E. McElroy
When Petzold's original book "Programming Windows" was first published in the mid-80s, THE computer book of the time was "The C Programming Language" by Kernighan and Ritchie. The teaching model of that book was incremental learning through example, always making sure that the reader was not overwhelmed by excessive detail at any particular stage of the learning process. This was the model adopted by Petzold for "Programming Windows" and it was as successful for Windows as it was for popularizing the C language. It is the model that Petzold has continued to follow in subsequent books. I have found this approach, when used by talented writers, to be very effective at producing a good understanding of a complex programming topic. Petzold's book on WPF is no exception.

This is not a book one reads in the living room. Like "The C Programming Language" and Petzold's other books, this is an extended tutorial to be read while sitting at the computer. That's why there are no screen shots in the book: they're on your monitor because that's where you are when you're reading it, at least during the initial reading.

One need only look at the disagreement among reviewers of this book to realize that it's a very different book from the endless mediocre titles offered by computer book publishers. Readers with a long background in software are also likely to realize that the variance in ratings almost certainly occurs because readers approach it with different backgrounds and different expectations.

Any of Petzold's books takes time to go through. That's simply a requirement of a book which teaches by incremental learning through example. Petzold is a very good writer and his explanations are clear, but demonstrating fine distinctions frequently means a topic must be developed at length. My opinion is that most people will take months to fully absorb this book and, therefore, this is not the book you want if your boss just gave you a WPF project and wants to see something on the monitor by the end of next week. There are other books that can help you do that much more quickly but those books, at least the ones I've looked at, will not bring you to the level of expertise that this one will.

This book will not be suitable for someone whose background consists of applications whose interface can be constructed by dropping controls on forms - a Petzold book is not intended for that kind of audience. For those who need to learn something quickly about WPF, Adam Nathan's book is quick reading: I went through a third of it in a couple of weeks before switching to Petzold's book. Although I haven't looked at them, someone under severe time pressure might want to check the instruction videos on Microsoft's web site to see if they can be useful.

The bottom line, for me, is this: WPF is a complex subject with a lot of detail and with architectural concepts very different from traditional GUI frameworks. It can easily overwhelm someone trying to learn it, even someone with decades of experience. It takes an enormous amount of intelligence to be able to take such a subject and break it down into incremental steps to make it understandable the way Petzold has done here. If you need a deep understanding of WPF and you are willing to spend the time that this book requires, this is the one you should get.

The WPF Book I was waiting for
By DinnerTablePhilosopher
Every book I had read so far on WPF sidestepped the basic premise behind WPF -- that it was a brand new platform and a new programming paradigm, which will eventually replace WinForms. How did they do that? By glorifying XAML and everything that it could do for you, turning Windows programming into that trash called HTML, which most Windows programmers stay away from. When I read Nathan Adams' highly touted book, I couldn't get past that 3rd chapter. Chris Sells? About the same. The problem was always the same -- each of the aforesaid authors unnecessarily burden you with XAML when you are already trying to get your head around the WPF, thereby glossing over some very, very important concepts!

Charlie Petzold is that seasoned veteran that started doing Windows ever since Windows came into existence. He takes a truly novel approach in teaching you about WPF. He starts off by first telling you about WPF in the language you are most familiar with -- C#. He explains all the concepts, all the ideas, all the tenets. All in C#. And then, when you get familiar with all of that, bam! He hits you with XAML. He then starts showing you how you can do all of the things that he showed you in C# -- in XAML. But by this time, you are no longer struggling with the concepts of WPF. You already know what DependencyProperties and RoutedEvents are. You are already aware of virtual trees and logical trees. So now, when you see them represented in XAML, it makes so much more sense. And it's all easier to comprehend.

The simplest analogy I can give is this: remember the time when you started learning calculus in high school? That was a new enough concept, right? Now imagine if you had to learn that in German (or your non-native tongue)! But once you learn all the concepts in English, you could very well proceed in a language you weren't quite as familiar with.

To me this is the only way I could have learned WPF. And XAML. I was pushing off WPF all these days only because XAML was getting in the way of my learning. While a lot of Web-programmers will be happy for XAML, the fact is, declarative programming is not something Windows programmers are used to. To them, the only way to approach the subject is to first teach them WPF and then show them how XAML comes in the picture.

Having said that, there are a two extremely irritating aspects to the book that start rearing their annoying heads by the time you get to the second chapter:
1. There are no graphics showing outputs from the code. Granted you are expected to run the code samples (which can be downloaded from the MS Press support site), but I shouldn't have to run every single code sample. Moreover, there are times when I'm reading the book on a crowded train, when I can't really run the program on my laptop -- there's barely room to open the book as it is.
2. Every program is a Console app. So after you hit the F5 key, the annoying console window gets in the way of viewing the main Window. You have to minimize the window, or move it in order to see the Window (Form). According to Petzold, it's convenient for him to hit Ctrl-C on the Console window to terminate the program. Note to Petzold: Chuck, have you tried hitting Shift-F5 on your IDE? I find this so debilitating that I had a utility converting every single csproj file in the folder tree from a console to a Windows application.

Aside from that, the code samples run perfectly. I'm on Chapter 11, and so far every single code sample works.

If you are a seasoned Windows/C# programmer facing similar mind blocks against XAML, this is the book for you. If you are a Web programmer for whom C# is subservient to VBScript, or JavaScript, and are comfortable with HTML, this may not be the right entry point for you (as evidenced by some of the low ratings that this book got). You may need to get in via XAML, and a book that overly emphasizes its importance (such as Adams or Sells) might be the way to go.

The Other Side of WPF
By Michael Gautier
I purchased this book late last year, took a vacation and spent a week reading it cover to cover. Since that time I've written several production WPF applications of moderate complexity that are several generations beyond the WinForms and WebForms apps I had been writting. Several months ago, when it was released, I also got to read Adam Nathan's book on the topic of WPF. Having read both books and used WPF to produce better apps under the usual deadlines, I can honestly say that I benefited from the additional insights gleaned from both books.

When I read Petzold's book and saw the code first approach with XAML introduced later, my impression was this seemed contrary to the preference to XAML I saw espoused in other sources and beta books. As I reconciled this new technology being taught by a long tenured veteran, I got a feeling that perhaps earlier concepts around Win32 UI programming may be the lens through which the author is presenting the material on how to best apply WPF. Needless to say, I paid attention and got more value than I anticipated and beyond what I learned from his WinForms book of similar size. While Adam Nathan's book was a more efficient read for me, and one that I could appreciate in its attention and orientation to the more mainstream presentation of WPF, I think that later book in conjunction with this one is quite useful.

My real critique of Petzold's book was that it should have played more to the what may have been the author's strengths in elucidating the API and imperative coding in WPF. Such an approach may have been a great book as a complement to the many XAML focused ones to follow. I believe the API focused chapters that do exist makes Petzold's book a great contribution to WPF knowledge and application. Sure, in my day-to-day I strictly enforce the UI separation by defining a majority of UI elements in XAML. Without Petzold's book I probably would have went further in this approach. Yet, in reading his material I was reminded of and given an appreciaton for the techniques and the potential benefits of using the WPF API more explicitly to peform a range of tasks that works in concert with XAML declared elements to provide the complete solution.

For understanding the benefits and mechanisms of the WPF API this is a great complement for the many XAML dominated books out there. I rate it a 5 because I learned a greater variety of interesting details related to the WPF API than I would have been predisposed to explore or unable to find just using the MSDN documentation. For WPF API knowledge and understanding that can enhance the code side of solutions defined to a greater or lesser degree in XAML this is a great buy.

Focused on learning
By Cyndyanne
Combining Infopath and Sharepoint was my goal and this book taught me how to do that in a fast track way. I could not believe that I went cover to cover in a short amount of time and learned so much! Now it will be a great reference book! I had a small question and Laura Rodgers answered it via Twitter. I now will be following her for sure!

Your search for a book that covers using InfoPath 2010 with SharePoint 2010 is over
By Johnathan Lightfoot
I have followed Laura Rogers and Darvish Shadravan for a while now and have always enjoyed seeing them speak at various conferences and events. So, when a client approached me with this book wanting to know if they should buy it, I told them yes without hesitation or having even read it.

After flipping through the first few chapters I just knew that I had to buy a copy for myself as well. Laura and Darvish have written an excellent book focused around using InfoPath 2010 with SharePoint 2010, something that has been needed for some time in my opinion. I really liked the layout and the approach the authors chose for conveying the information. It is divided into 14 chapters which start with the basics and slowly ramps the reader up into more advanced topics. The explanations and pace of the book is excellent. At no time when I read the book did I feel as if they took me down a path of learning and then left me hanging while they went on to another topic.

There is a nice mixture between text and exercises within the book. While this book could be used a go to for information when needed, I would suggest going through the entire book cover to cover first. Laura and Darvish have explained everything very well. But you have to remember that the book chapters do build upon each other. So if you were to flip through the book looking for something you will most likely find it but if you don't have a background in InfoPath or SharePoint you may just miss a an important concept that they wrote in an earlier section.

As I wrote earlier this is a great book with a lot of good information on using InfoPath 2010 with SharePoint 2010. It reads very easily and if you have a free weekend with access to a SharePoint 2010 site and InfoPath 2010 installed you will probably be able to work through the reading and the exercises pretty easily. That said however do not get me wrong and think that this is a basic book. Laura and Darvish do go into the more complex areas of using the software as well. Such as adding logic and rules, integrating with SharePoint workflows, InfoPath Forms Services, Dashboards, and advanced functions. So this is not a lightweight book. It's their easy writing style (almost as if they were sitting next to you talking you through the content) which makes it such a good resource.

Chapter Highlights:
Chapter 1 - Office Backstage in InfoPath, Understand how to create an XML file, Create an InfoPath form, Add, data connections to a form.
Chapter 2 - Choosing a form template, Understanding form compatibility levels, learn what the document information panel is (--did you know that you can customize this?), run the Design Checker.
Chapter 3 - Use Page Layout templates, add tables to forms, understand data binding, work with InfoPath Controls.
Chapter 4 - Insert a custom page design template, use available controls for a form, customize a travel request list using InfoPath, use calculations in a form.

Chapter 7 - Add a SharePoint list data connection to a drop down control, work with Data Connection Libraries, Use the External Item Picker control.
Chapter 8 - Create a simple feedback form, configure the InfoPath Form Web Part, learn about Web Part connections, create an input parameter.
Chapter 9 - Add data from a web service to your forms, Work with form load rules, create an event registration form.
Chapter 10 - Integrate InfoPath forms in workflows, customize an initiation form to look more polished, update forms when fields change, use task actions in workflows to generate a task form in the workflow.

An excellent resource for both new and experienced SharePoint users
By Kimberly Frehe
This is one of the best SharePoint books that I have read. I love the idea of InfoPath and have used the 2007 version with varying degrees of success. Even with some familiarity with InfoPath 2010, I learned something new in every chapter. The tone is very conversational, where it feels like the authors are sitting next to you walking you through the exercises. I never felt this book about technology got too "techy" and I would recommend this for end users, power users and developers alike (why code if you can use an out of the box InfoPath feature). The print screens are excellent and really enable you to fully grasp the concepts, I read the book without a computer or InfoPath in front of me and was able to follow each exercise and feel like I understood it.

Laura and Darvish do an excellent job of telling you what you can do, WHY you should do it, and give you different options on how. There is also commentary about what worked in their testing and what didn't...they don't tell you it won't work, just that the way they did this or that did not work very well and give recommendations on alternate ways.

The fact that a chapter is dedicated to basic workflow is awesome...any user, new or experienced, will have the knowledge to not only build a form, but a usable solution. And I love the advanced topics at the end. It is a mix-up of useful information about a variety of topics that show these authors really want to empower users with knowledge to help them succeed. I feel very strongly that even experienced SharePoint users will learn a lot from this book.

I also recommend reading Johnathan Lightfoot's review about this book, it is right on the money. I don't need to repeat what he has already said, but I completely agree with him.

Aimed at the System Administrator Level, Not the User
By John Matlock
Microsoft's customer relationship management (CRM) package is now out in its third revision. The new edition is much more stable, easier to navigate around, and has numerous new features that previous users have suggested.

This book covers an introduction to Dynamics CRM 3.0 from the viewpoint of what you might call the systems administrator. That is, this book is for the person who gets the task of setting up, configuring, maintaining and especially customizing the package to suite the needs of your company. It presumes that you have at least some knowledge of Microsoft Exchange Server, Active Directory service, and SQL Server. Because of the web orientation for remote use of the system, some understanding of XML files is needed. This is not the end user book.

The book is broken down into three parts: ==Part I is on Configuration and Settings. Dynamics CRM is an extremely flexible system. Using this flexibility without putting in so many options the end user gets confused is part of the challenge of the administrator.

Part II is on customization and includes both the input, reporting and workflow areas.

Part III is on extended the capabilities at either the server end or the client side of the system as well as working with outside applications.

A CD is included with the book that includes a time limited version of the software.

This book is destined to become the Bible on Dynamics CRM.

A good start
By Toluallii F. Nielsen
This is a good book when getting started with rolling out CRM. It has a lot of info on making system customizations that help in getting CRM to display exactly what you need. This book doesn't cover everything; so, it's not a be all end all. However, it's worth the money for the info it does cover. It's definitely not a book for end-users, this covers administrative tasks.

All About Vista in only 1500 Pages
By Jase T. Wolfe
Windows OS Resource Kits have always proved invaluable to the administrator, and the Vista RSK is no different; over 1500 pages in this edition and a DVD as well.

This RSK is much more inclusive than some previous Windows Desktop RSKs. Part 1 starts off with an tour of Vista's changes over XP, and an overview of the OS' security components. Part 2 is all about automated deployment (over 250 pages dedicated to it), outlining general preparation and environmental requirements, use of the Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK), and Windows Business Desktop Deployment 2007 (Windows BBD 2007). Both AIK and BBD are included in the DVD. Part 3 covers desktop management, geared mostly for network administrators managing Vista clients, and includes additional Microsoft services such as Windows Meeting Space, Search and Internet Explorer 7. Part 4 covers desktop maintenance (and coverage of an oddly placed Remote Assistance). Part 5 deals with networking and includes a section on deploying IPv6. The final section provides around 200 pages of troubleshooting, divided into startup, hardware / driver, network, and Stop messages.

Besides the aforementioned, the accompanying DVD also provides a PDF version of the book, several sample chapters of other books, and over 170 scripts and tools (mostly VBS scripts) aimed at both showing the intrinsic administrative capabilities of Vista as well as additional tools to assist in deployment, management, and troubleshooting.

Unlike the first two attempts at an XP RSK, this RSK starts things off right with in-depth information that is easy to find and easy to understand. A must have for administrators.

Great for Enterprise implementations, not for home or enthusiasts
By K. Frazier
The Vista Resource Kit is a decent resource for Enterprise Class customers. Unfortunately, past product resource kits did not focus entirely upon the enterprise distribution functionality, and could be used to benefit the management of stand-alone systems.

Much of this edition requires the use of Ultimate, Business, or Enterprise editions of Vista. Implementation focuses upon group policy management in lieu of more detail access to registry settings, as was done in prior resource kits.

It is still a valuable tool, but if you are an individual user looking for detail insight of the funtionality and control of the Vista operating system, you will need to look for another book.

Dig in
By J. L. Katzenbach
Vista Resource Kit isn't exactly the kind of book you sit down and read cover to cover. There are better books for that purpose. What this book is good for - and I'll risk saying exceptional for - is digging in to exactly how things wrok. Great resource for research!

A Perfect Resource for New Word Users
By Brad Temple
For those looking for a detailed instructional book on Microsoft Word 2013, this is a well organized and put together resource. Each chapter has a very specific focus, and discusses a number of Word features in depth. Once the feature is explained, you use supplied practice files to actually put these skills to use. For people like myself who learn from doing more than anything else, doing these simple exercises and walking through the steps with practice files is a very fast way to pick up the basics.

This book is not for those who are experienced or advanced users of Word, as there are a number of bigger and better reference-style books available for Word. But for those who need a foundation of the features and using them, this is a great start to get comfortable with the various features Word 2013 provides.

Well organized.
By David Snively
Easy to find answers to problems and questions. A quick scan of the book, reading just the headlines, provides a good summary of how the program works and how to get the most out of it. As I've used the program, I'm impressed by how quickly I can find answers to questions. It's a good program and a very good book to go along with it.

By Margaret Snow
Book is great for beginners, but does not cover the real meat that is needed by advance users. I was look for more tricks and trouble shooting ideas.
