The Truth: This Book is Not "Just for Advanced Programmers"
By na
The first thing I'd like to say is this book rocks. It should be one of the first books you open up if you want to really be good at OOP. Because first you have to learn what the CLR is doing and why because the code you write directly relates to it by performance, and expected behavior. If you don't know this, then you end up with more ?? than anything when coding because you really don't understand HOW things are being done under the covers and even though you can still code and code even simple or advanced, you are sort of coding blind and you are winging it no matter how good you think you are.

Second, let me say that I strongly disagree with many who say this book as a whole should ONLY be ready by experienced / advanced programmers. Ok, yes the some of this book gets really advanced (i.e. threading, etc.). However there are a lot of just fundamentals here that are critical parts in this book that EVERY developer needs to grasp and memorize fully in order to be an effective programmer.

Here are some of the sections I'm talking about that apply to all developers of all levels of programming:

Part II
Chapter 4 - Type Fundamentals
Chapter 5 - Primitive, Reference, and Value Types
Chapter 6 - Type Member Basics
Chapter 7 - Constants and Fields
Chapter 8 - Methods
Chapter 9 - Parameters
Chapter 10 - Properties
Chapter 11 - Events
Chapter 12 - Generics (yes advanced but mid-level devs should be reading this)
Chapter 13 - Interfaces

Part III

Chapter 14 - Chars, String, and Working with Text
Chapter 15 - Enumerated Types and Bit Flags
Chapter 16 - Arrays
Chapter 17 - Delegates
Chapter 18 - Custom Attributes
Chapter 19 - Nullable Value Types

Part IV

Chapter 20 - Exceptions and State Management
(all about exceptions here. i.e. he talks about try/catch and best practices using it and much more on the fundamentals of exception handling)
Chapter 21 - Automatic Memory Management (Garbage Collection) - Every developer needs to know about this
Chapter 22 - CLR Hosting and App Domains (yes, you should know what an AppDomain is, even mid-level devs)
Chapter 23 - Assembly Loading and Reflection
Chapter 24 - Runtime Serialization

If every developer were to pick up this book simply to read those chapters above, you are pretty much guaranteed to have a much more confident grasp on what is actually going on other than syntax when you program. It's important to know what is going on.

The thing I like about this book is it's not just a dry read, plain technical book. Yea some of it is very technical and can be considered a reference but it's sort of a hybrid to me, not just a reference. You also have the author's thoughts, reasoning, etc. behind the vanilla hard core concepts of what's going on in the CLR. He's able to articulate what's going on and able to explain it in simple terms even though what he's talking about has a lot of detail and is very in depth. So in other words, this is a much more "modern" developer book. Modern is by my definition those authors who can teach you when you read their books. They are not just dry technical text that bore you to death and leave out reality or real-world examples. They engage you, and they stick in your head because the author knows how to communicate not only in one way but usually able describe a topic from many ways...saving you a lot of headaches because you're learning from Lead developers.

This book should be on EVERY developers shelf. It's one of those books that you'll use over and over again throughout your career and it will really save you a lot of pain. And you should be reading at least the fundamentals above...find the time. Other books for example may talk about value and reference types but they fail to really give you a grasp of WHY you need to know about this and really explain what's going on in detail in a way that you can understand clearly and simply. And there are a lot of things in here that even Sr. or Architect level devs may think they know but they don't, even in the fundamental sections. Everyone can learn a lot from this book. I too am still learning a lot from this book.

There's a lot to read even in the sections I listed above, but you should really get this book and find a way to read every page of those sections.

Takes any developer to their next level of programming C#
By T Anderson
There are plenty books that show you what you can do with C#. This book shows how C# does what it does and tells you why. There is no better advanced C# book available on the market.

If you want to learn the CLR, this is the way to do it. There is no better way.

You will not find a better treatment of threading. This book covers threading in great detail.

The author's style of writing makes the book very easy to read, and he is able to present complex topics in an easy to learn format.

The only part of the book I can't stand is the Forward. There Jeffrey's wife tells us that this is his last book. That would be understandable, but ashame.

All the code in the book is in one solution and is easy to use.

All in all, this is an absolute must read for any C# developer. The understanding of C# you gain from this book will take you too the next level, no matter what level of programmer you are today.

ESSENTIAL Bible For Learning CLR with C#
By Dan McKinnon
WOW.

All I can say is WOW to this book.

You could slap a price 3-4x more on this text and it would still be a bargain. There simply is no other text on the market that hits this niche and smashes a home run out of the park.

Buyer beware, this is NOT the book for the casual programmer who is doing basic app/form/web/database development. This is a VERY specific niche of developer that is looking to get into and understand the guts of the magic of CLR. The writing is slick, tight, and intelligent. At 800+ pages, this seems like a huge amount, but there is magic throughout this book.

Let's take a look at the Table Of Contents:

01. CLR Execution Model
02. Building, Packaging, Deploying, and Administering Applications and Types
03. Shared Assemblies and Strongly Named Assemblies
04. Type Fundamentals
05. Primitive, Reference, and Value Types
06. Type and Member Basics
07. Costants and Fields
08. Methods
09. Parameters
10. Properties
11. Events
12. Generics
13. Interfaces
14. Chars, Strings, and Working with Text
15. Enumerated Types and Bit Flags
16. Arrays
17. Delegates
18. Custom Attributes
19. Nullable Value Types
20. Exceptions and State Management
21. Automatic Memory Management (Garbage Collection)
22. CLR Hosting and AppDomains
23. Assembly Loading and Reflection
24. Runtime Serialization
25. Thread Basics
26. Compute-Bound Asynchronous Operations
27. I/O-Bound Asynchronous Operations
28. Primitive Thread Synchronization Constructs
29. Hybrid Thread Synchronization Constructs

There's a lot there isn't there?

I don't need to say much more, if you need to get into the guts of the CLR or you are just looking to learn more about the inner workings, pick up this book immediately. It's one of the best computer-niche books I have ever had the pleasure to come across.

Taste it slowly to learn it deeper
By Giuseppe Simpatia
The very first word of this title gives the real idea of the scope of this book: training.
If you are looking for a way to put into practice what you've learned across pages and pages of concepts and labyrinthine abstractions, you can find here dozens of practical exercises and real world situations.
On my opinion, the major benefit of the practical approach is that you can get an immediate sense of how to apply the theory and its effective reflections on a day-by-day job experience.

This book is not an exam guide.
If you are preparing the 70-411 Microsoft Exam, you'd better choose other e-books to integrate this one with more consistent objectives.
This book covers the majority of the 70-411 aspects, but "the idea behind this book is that by reading it, you can learn how to perform tasks you may need to perform on a day-by-day basis in your role as a Windows Server 2012 administrator".
In other words, what you will learn accomplishing the exercises of this book is probably more of what you will be able to do after successfully passing the 70-411, but paradoxically it could be not enough to pass the exam.
As just said, this is a training book with practical exercises, so just after a few pages the reader is required to stop and take the time to set a virtual machine, then download, install and perform a basic configuration of a 180 days trial copy of Windows Server 2012.
Only with all this stuff in place, he can start working at the tasks described.
A reader who must take an exam won't probably have time for that.

This book is divided into 10 chapters and each chapter into lessons.
The most positive impression that this book gives is that it faces the problems by directly approaching them.
Compared to other books about Administering Windows Server 2008, I found here many useful objectives elsewhere ignored.
For example, about configuring and deploying Windows 2012 Server images or about generating reports with the file server role.

What really lacks in this book is a perspective dedicated to the PowerShell.
PS plays an important role in Microsoft 2012 Server, but the exercises take into consideration only the GUI method.

Despite this, I would definitely recommend this book. This is one of the most interesting e-books I have ever read.

Administering Guide for Better Job Performance
By Bob Monroe
Every so often I'll come across a rare gem of a book. It might be a book about woodworking, DNS, Arp spoofing or even ways to make a good bean soup. Administrating Windows Server 2012 R2 Training Guide by Orin Thomas is one of those rare finds. I don't work much with servers and I thank the lord for that. However, it is amazing to learn what a difficult job that really is. The book isn't really a study guide to prepare you for the 70-411 certification. Orin Thomas seems to have written this book for those of you who probably already have that credential but need a great operators manual.

If you are a sys admin with a few years under your weary eyes and you are running Windows Server 2012, this book is for you. It even says so in the beginning of the book. Yet, the contents start you from the beginning of setting of a server and lead you all the way through the steps of setting up accounts, creating policies, maintaining/housecleaning and branching off into many sophisticated ways to manage your job responsibilities.

As with all Microsoft publications the guide is clear, clean and concise (that was a joke for those of you who never had to read any of their security publications before TechNet came along). Mr. Thomas turned his years of sweat and blisters as a sys admin into an easy to understand manual for those running Windows Servers. He approaches the reader with caution by letting them know that there are several ways to do a given task and the reader is free to choose their pain level. He offers the reader his own opinion on ways to accomplish difficult or time consuming tasks with hints as to why you will want to follow his advice instead of making your life more difficult.

In other words, he doesn't tell the reader that they have to do a task one specific way but if the reader wants to do it another way, he give them straight advice as to why they should follow his method. That is what I love about the book. The guide is overflowing with mentoring tips to ease the job of administering Windows Servers 2012.

Take chapter two Managing account policies and services accounts, as an example. Passwords are painful to work with. Sys admins have been known to make policies either too stringent or too lax. Nobody in an organization is ever happy with password policies, more-so the people who set up those policies and the help desk personnel who have to reset forgotten passwords. Chapter two is written with what appears to be many years of experience in the area of trying to make everyone happy regarding passwords. I felt Mr. Thomas's pain as he gently nudges the reader to be cautious when establishing password policies.

The author provided excellent tips and outstanding recommendations on which settings should be used and why those were the best options. Only a person with several years of people complaining to them would truly appreciate the sound decisions he proposes (those weary eyed ones). If you happen to be recently 70-411 certified, heed the information in this book. Think of this guide as your roadmap to a successful career as a server administrator. It has plenty of helpful material to help you study for the certification but I felt it serves a higher purpose as a “How to do your job” guide.

This book alone will not be enough to get you to pass the 70-411 examination and the authors makes that quite clear throughout the guide. I was surprised to find out how much Windows server installations, configurations, maintenance and supervision relied on the command line interface otherwise known as Windows Powershell. What happened to GUI? There are default settings for everything with Windows Server 2012 but no network is ever a cut and paste network. There is plenty of settings that have to be manually adjusted and Mr. Thomas goes through all of them in great detail. He also explains alternatives to his methods as well as the consequences or possible outcomes of not adhering to his suggestions.

The guide provides small segments for each chapter topic, sort of like hit and runs. He shoots the important information to the reader, gives examples and instructions for completing the task and then summarizes what he just wrote about. Next, he reenforces the subtopic knowledge by giving the reader a couple of basic questions. Then, he is on to the next subtopic. Once the full task is covered, he goes into exercises that follow step by step on how to perform the task that was just read.

The reader is expected to either set up a virtual server using a trial version of Windows Server 2012 or the reader is already administering a server. Either way, the reader is walked and talked through every function they can expect to see as part of their role as a sys admin. The book doesn't just focus on setting up a single server, rather each chapter tells the reader how to run all types of servers and all sorts of functions. I had no idea that a service could have it's own account. That's in the book too.

One of my favorite parts of each chapter is where Mr. Thomas provides a segment called Real World. Each of these segments cover mistakes most administrators make, why they make those mistakes and how the reader can avoid the pain of making those same mistakes. Again, this book was written by someone who has experienced years of pain as a sys admin and has taken notes on every one of those painful mistakes.

I heard that high levels of stress will shorten your life. Save your own life and buy this book.

Read it, then read it again. Keep it in your car or hide it in your desk so others around you don't know where you are getting all this wisdom from. If you keep it in your car, you can run out to your vehicle when a problem arises and come back to the office with a brilliant solution. If you place it on your desk where others might see it, put a fake book cover over it so that others will think you are a Windows 2012 server guru. This guide will reduce your chances of having a stress-based heart attack and increase your pay scale, I would almost guarantee except that I'm neither a doctor nor your employee.

Too "in-depth". Not easy to read but packaged with good TSQL info. Not for the newbie.
By Jose
I just went yesterday to a famous bookstore here in town to check this one before order it online and left a bit disappointed, with no desire at all to buy it. Don't get me wrong, Itzik is an awesome writer, a genius on his field, but I do not share the previous 5 start opinions and I will explain why.

I do not consider myself an TSQL expert but got some SQL DBA years on my belt and a MCTS cert too. Having said that and after almost finish reading Microsoft SQL Server 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals (PRO-Developer), same author, I found this one very difficult to follow, flooded with tons of theory and math that for a TSQL book is in my opinion too much. Yes, SQL language has strong logic and math background but that is not what DBAs or developers are looking on a technical book and this is not a college book either; people are looking for practical books which can be quickly be applied on daily job activities.

Chapter #2 for example is full of logic and math stuff that I honestly skipped immediately. Nice as bonus information but not "straight to the point" T-SQL stuff. You can easily take that chapter out and keep the book lighter in my honest opinion. Same for Chapter#3, more logic and math stuff, related to T-SQL, yes, but no the real stuff.

Chapter 1, 7 and 10 are taken of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals (PRO-Developer), which by the way, is an outstanding book. Those chapters are about SELECT, JOINS and DML, information that like I said, can be found on the Fundamentals book but in an easy to read style, even with exercises so you can evaluate your own skills.

Chapter #4 is probably the more interesting chapter of the whole book, is about query performance. I must accept Itzik dominates the material but introduces so many complex query concepts and statements that you will get lost in no time. He even mentions he wasn't so sure about where to put this chapter, end of beginning, because the way he's using complex DMVs. But I believe you still can explain query performance without being so technical. This chapter is just full of complex query techniques that make even more complex the explanation of performance tuning strategies. I prefer SQL Server 2008 Query Performance Tuning Distilled by Grant Fritchey; a book just dedicated for that topic but delightful and easy to follow, without being a "dummy book".

In order to be fair and make justice though, the book is really full of theory about logical query processing, set theory and algorithms, foundations of what SQL language is. If you have a really strong background of TSQL query (I mean, really strong TSQL skills), math and the enough time to digest and understand that, this book is for you.

But to me, this book can be out of your book shelve and be easily replaced by this combo instead: SQL Server 2008 Query Performance Tuning Distilled+Microsoft SQL Server 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals (same author) Both will teach the same in a better and easy to follow approach, skipping all the logic, math and boring sql language foundation which to me, are unnecessary on this kind of books especially if you are not in college anymore, but working as a full time DBA.

What else can we ask to have in one book about T-SQL Querying?
By Alejandro Mesa
I have really enjoyed this book from the begining to the end.

The new chapters from Steve and Dejan:

- Set Theory and Predicate Logic
- Algorithms and Complexity
- The Relational Model

are a very good complement. Having these topics is handy and refreshing, not to mention a must in this discipline.

Itzik's cover about the new T-SQL features introduced with SQL Server 2008, is insightful and very well guided. No doubt that he is an educator by nature.

If you are new to T-SQL, I strongly recommend that you first read Itzik's book "Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals", prior to diving into this series (T-SQL Querying and T-SQL Programming).

Thanks to all the authors for such wonderful book.

Expert knowledge and outstanding organization. More lucid writing needed.
By Jaewoo Kim
Sometimes, the authors of technical books have the prerequisite expert knowledge and have an outstanding organization and game plan. But their writing is just too ambiguous. This is one of those books. The author should simply get to the point and not meander too much.

First, this book is not for the beginners. Indeed, you may not need all the knowledge contained in this book to be even intermediate DBA or DB Developer. But if you want to raise your knowledge of MS SQL to an expert level, a book like this sure helps. It is really too bad the author can't be more forthright in his writing.

Pros:
1)Expert in how MS SQL processes transactions.
2)Outstanding organization.
3)Comprehensive explanation of T-SQL.
4)If you want to understanding SQL performance tuning, this book is a must.

Cons:
1)Not for the beginners.
2)Writing could be far more lucid.

Word 2007 Step by Step
By Charlie
I have been using Word for years. I recommend this book, but there's some good and some bad. It quickly helped me to understand a lot of the features I do not usually use. The section at the beginning of the book is a short-cut of many most-used items. It was quite helpful. The rest of the book contains the step-by-step explanations. Sometimes the authors assume you know what you're doing, which is ok for an intermediate user. A novice will have to do some cross-checking to figure-out the explanation. I did not like the CD. The CD was not straight forward or easy to use. Licensing requirements pop up several times while you try to install the CD. You have to agree to the terms before you can use the CD. It's time consuming to read the requirements. While using the CD, some of the practice documents unexpectedly saved as Read-Only, and now I have to reinstall the CD. I gave four stars to this product because overall the book was a good learning tool.

Save Your Money
By Barrie W. Bracken
One reviewer has said you would think that Microsoft would spend more money and time on protecting is manual and this shows. I totally agree. If you want to learn how to use Microsoft word 2007 I would suggest you look for a different kind of manual.
This book depends entirely upon your using the so-called practice files on the CD. If these practice files don't show you what you need to know, you're out of luck. Let's take a look at some examples of how the book works:
The instructions for sending a fax are included in a text box about 3 x 5 inches and tell you virtually nothing about how to send a fax.
Instructions for adding bookmarks and cross-references occupied four pages of text and the only instruction really useful is found in a text box consisting of three sentences.
Instructions for creating and printing labels is covered in four pages of the text and refers you to the different elements of the practice files on the CD. Hopefully the files will show you everything you need to know because the text tells you nothing.
Chapter 6 "instructs" you on working with graphics symbols and equations. Of course it only tells you how to use the practice files.
This book takes up a lot of wasted space in your bookcase. In the interest in conserving both space and money you might want to consider purchasing a teaching disk. These are normally pretty useless things, but no more so than this Microsoft text. I give it one star because it does look impressive sitting on your shelf.

Great Choice for Understanding Nuances of Excel
By Lynne Ober
This is one in a series of books that are renewed with each version of Office. The Excel one takes you from beginner status to some more difficult concepts. It has a useful overview of the new functions found in Excel 2013. It teaches how to write write and edit a formula and then has a section on how to debug the formula you wrote. There's a one page, but clear description of how to understand cell references and formulas in Excel. Then it teaches you how to use and name a range. A useful concept that often goes unused because people don't understand it.

The graphics are screen prints with notations, which are extremely helpful to the visual learner, who finds page after page of text daunting. It also makes it very quick for any learned to grasp and use new concepts.

A chapter is devoted to helping the reader customize Excel to make it easier to use for the functionality that you use most. The summarizing chapter not only gives a good look at using a Validation Rule, but also devotes two pages to Pivot Tables and then shows how to chart your data to impress your boss or others.

This is a book that provides good value.

Best book on XP Networking & IIS issues
By A. Parent
If you want to run your own webserver & use XP's IIS as your webserver software, this is the book to help you with IIS setup and security issues. I don't understand why MS didn't have Curt Simmons do the later updated version - he's such a clear writer. This book explains even difficult concepts clearly and simply with very clear examples. Highly recommended.

Amazon.com Review
Stephen Northcutt and his coauthors note in the superb Intrusion Signatures and Analysis that there's really no such thing as an attack that's never been seen before. The book documents scores of attacks on systems of all kinds, showing exactly what security administrators should look for in their logs and commenting on attackers' every significant command. This is largely a taxonomy of hacker strategies and the tools used to implement them. As such, it's an essential tool for people who want to take a scientific, targeted approach to defending information systems. It's also a great resource for security experts who want to earn their Certified Intrusion Analyst ratings from the Global Incident Analysis Center (GIAC)--it's organized, in part, around that objective.

The book typically introduces an attack strategy with a real-life trace--usually attributed to a real administrator--from TCPdump, Snort, or some sort of firewall (the trace's source is always indicated). The trace indicates what is happening (i.e., what weakness the attacker is trying to exploit) and the severity of the attack (using a standard metric that takes into account the value of the target, the attack's potential to do damage, and the defenses arrayed against the attack). The attack documentation concludes with recommendations on how defenses could have been made stronger. These pages are great opportunities to learn how to read traces and take steps to strengthen your systems' defenses.

The book admirably argues that security administrators should take some responsibility for the greater good of the Internet by, for example, using egress filtering to prevent people inside their networks from spoofing their source address (thus defending other networks from their own users' malice). The authors (and the community of white-hat security specialists that they represent) have done and continue to do a valuable service to all Internet users. Supplement this book with Northcutt's excellent Network Intrusion Detection, which takes a more general approach to log analysis and is less focused on specific attack signatures. --David Wall

Topics covered:

  • External attacks on networks and hosts, as they appear to administrators and detection systems monitoring log files
  • How to read log files generally
  • How to report attacks and interact with the global community of good-guy security specialists
  • The most commonplace critical security weaknesses
  • Traces that document reconnaissance probes
  • Denial-of-service attacks
  • Trojans
  • Overflow attacks
  • Other black-hat strategies

When a good book is worth a thousand experiences!
By Marco De Vivo
This is the best book about Intrusion Signatures published yet.
I teach computer security at a local university, and with the only help of this book, I could take care of all the practical aspects of my last course. If you have already a good background on this field, and read and understand thoroughly the book, then you can afford any related security certification test.
Chapters 3 through 17, present several well documented cases, which, in turn, are discussed following the same standard:
- Presentation
- Source of Trace
- Detect Generated by
- Probability the Source Address Was spoofed
- Attack Description
- Attack Mechanism
- Correlations
- Evidence of Active Targeting
- Severity
- Defense Recommendations
- Questions
Chapter 1 introduces the reader to Analysis of Logs (including Snort, Tcpdump, and Syslog), IDS, and Firewalls. Even being a quick review, it is quite useful, though.
Chapter 2 explains the way the cases are studied.
The covered vulnerabilities and attacks include:
- Internet Security Threats
- Routers and Firewalls Attacks
- IP Spoofing
- Networks Mapping and Scanning
- Denial of Service
- Trojans
- Assorted Exploits
- Buffer Overflows
- IP Fragmentation
- False Positives
- Crafted Packets
At the bottom line, this is one of the 5 best computer security books I ever read. Even for non experts, the book can be a valuable tool to improve the understanding on this field.
Try it.

A good start, but proceed with caution: uncertain analysis
By Richard Bejtlich
Disclaimer: I withdrew a chapter from this book, and my words appear on p. 25. "Intrusion Signatures" tries to share the collective wisdom of SANS GIAC certification candidates, tempered by more experienced SANS editors. I applaud their intentions, but the uneven analysis and commentary warrants faint praise. New analysts flying solo should not read this book. Analysts with a guru to consult should get his or her input before trusting the book's interpretations.
Examples: (1) Eric Hacker expertly discusses a Windows password problem on pp. 77-85, but a significant trace is missing on p. 81. This causes the following dozen traces to not match their respective explanations. Would a new analyst notice? (2) Several times (p. 87, etc.) the authors fail to realize "public" is a common default SNMP "read" community string, while "private" is the "read/write" counterpart. This mistake is crucial elsewhere in the book. (3) The editors call a clear example of round-trip-time determination a "half-open DNS scan." It's ok for certification students to make judgement errors, but SANS editors should explain why that view isn't correct. (4) A very questionable "SYN flood" trace in ch. 10 doesn't match the "reproduction" of the same trace in the question-and-answer appendix -- that one's missing a crucial packet! (5) A "spoofed FTP request" in ch.11 looks like an active FTP data attempt to me. That concept is explained on p. 329, but the authors don't apply the same reasoning to ch.11's example. Why?
On the positive side, I was impressed by Mark Cooper's work on buffer overflows and ICMP redirects. Some of the student work is also first-rate, but it may be tough for new readers to make the necessary distinctions.
The authors owe it to the target audience (new analysts) to deliver accurate explanations. Different interpretations are expected, but errors like those listed require scrutiny. The work is sincere -- I just can't recommend this book to inexperienced intrusion detectors.
