So far I seen the book digs into good level of details related to interoperability on XSD issues, .NET remoting vs J2EE, MSMQ vs Websphere MQ. Fantastic reference book and training guide

I've been stuck in the Office 2003 age for some time. Why, you ask? It's just that I get frustrated trying to find the features that I'm accustomed to using when attempting to work in the "new and improved" Office 2007 or 2010 system. The interface has been re-arranged, creating access roadblocks. I know that everything is hidden away somewhere, but .... I saw reviewing this rather hefty volume as a nice way to finally bring myself up to date in the Microsoft Office Universe. This book covers Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Templates, as well as Automation and Customization of these applications in Office 2010 for the PC and Office 2011 for the Mac. Weighing in at 834 pages, including a rather extensive index, Stephanie Krieger covers a lot of material.

The book begins with the traditional Introduction, including where to find introductory material (this book is not an introductory text), what to expect from between the covers, where to find the companion content and bonus content online, how to get support if needed, and quite a list of acknowledgments. Most of my MS Office work is done in Word. So, I jumped right in at page 139, "Building Easy-to-Manage, Robust Documents", to begin a 220 page adventure with Part II Word as my guide.

Part II begins with Chapter 6 and explains the structure of a Word document and how to "stay in control". First is an introduction to the three levels of Word formatting. Font formatting, such as font face or font size, is stored directly in the character to which it is applied. Paragraph formatting, such as aligns or indents, is stored in the paragraph mark at the end of the paragraph. Section formatting, such as most of the page setup options and header/footer information, is stored in the section break. If the document is not divided into sections with section breaks, the formatting is stored in the last paragraph mark in the document.

The author describes the Reveal Formatting pane, a useful tool for troubleshooting document formatting conundrums. It's divided into the three formatting levels previously described. Explaining objects and stories, as they apply to a Word document, helps you understand how Word organizes content. One extremely useful set of tools in word is formatting marks, also known as nonprinting characters. By reading these markers your can see how Word is formatting your document. To toggle the marks on or off just press the keyboard combination CTRL-SHFT-8, press the Show/Hide¶ button in the Home tab, or enable "Show all formatting marks" in the Reveal Formatting task pane. The three views: Print Layout, Draft, and Outline; are explained next.

When working on a long and heavily formatted document, or an inherited document, "stuff" can seem to go wrong. Formatting errors are often the culprit. Some great examples of what to look for and how to correct problems are presented. When actual document corruption is at hand, Open and Repair can be a real life saver, time saver, and basic cause for celebration. Opening a document with this tool for a thorough scan every so often is an easy way to ensure the integrity of a complex document before problems arise. This is a great tip! The chapter ends with a listing of "the six tools you need to create any complex document" in Word: Themes, Styles, Tables, Graphics, Sections, and Dynamic Content.

Chapter 7 is all about "Working with Text". You'll find out what's new in this latest edition of Word, the OpenType typography tools, Text Effects and WordArt, font and paragraph formatting for layout adjustments, and line and page break options. Chapter 8 discusses working with styles and style sets. Styles (in any program), have to be the biggest time-saver since copy & paste for anyone working with electronic documents. During the editing process you can quickly make rather radical changes involving font face, paragraph and character spacing, typeface color and size, etc. Second only to the invention of electronic word processing, my productivity enhancement award would go to styles. Managing lists and table styles and using the Style Inspector are also included in the chapter.

Chapter 9 is a thorough discussion of tables and how to use them in your document. Chapter 10 is titled Managing Graphics. This topic is quite a bit more complex than just inserting a file from your hard drive or performing a copy and paste. The subjects explained are pictures and objects, linked and embedded objects, picture types and when to use them, text wrap and image positioning, and the Mac-only publishing layout view.

Sections is a subject that can be challenging once you get beyond the basics. When you need to put one in your document and when you don't, is how this chapter begins. The nitty-gritty of how section formatting is stored is well explained, as is the different types of section breaks. Headers and footers come in four flavors. In addition, there is first page only formatting and odd/even page header and footer tweaks. Taking full control of these options is the topic of numerous pages in Chapter 11. There is also a section on the book-style page layout and the chapter ends with "Creating Watermarks".

Part II ends with a chapter on dynamic content. If you've ever done a mail merge or embedded fields in your document that draw data from a spreadsheet or database, you'll enjoy this chapter. The built-in content controls come in eight flavors. If you've created a form for folks to fill out in an electronic document, you've worked with content controls. Using formatting, nesting, and document protection options with content controls gets quite a bit of attention in this chapter. How to use AutoText, AutoComplete, and Equation Tools are part of this grouping. Building blocks allow you to insert formatted content at an insertion point. Examples of Building Blocks would be Cover Page, Table of Contents, Header/Footer, and Page numbers. Creating a new Building Block is also an option. Fields, essentially dynamic text, provide another level of dynamic content and are well explained, finishing out the last chapter of Part II: Word.

I could have used a reference like this when I was teaching myself how to use Word to create manuals, tutorials, and merged documents back in 1998. I struggled through Knowledge Base articles and those wonderful Word Help screens to get the job done. So, you can guess that I found this book a delight. This reference book is a five smileys recommendation, for sure!

A THICK book full of ideas

If you were to hand this book to an office staff member, you might find it being used as a computer monitor stand a few months later. Just its size makes one nervous. However, for anyone who does their own presentations (print, slides, dashboards, whatever) and wants a really good summary of a whole lot of features in the several 'presentation-oriented' software products in Office 2011 to make what they do really stand out, this is a great choice for both reference and practical use. It will, for the most part, be up to you to decide whether sparklines, pivot tables, section titles, etc. are right for what you're doing but there are a LOT of things in here to make you more productive. It also covers my favorite and indispensable Microsoft OneNote which is totally unknown to most folks but can be such a help for those trying to corral massive amounts of information. I don't think you'll regret getting this book if you're looking to integrate Office suite products in a more meaningful way and really be get your output noticed. Oh, and unlike a lot of other Microsoft products, this one really seems helpful.... No Clippy, but good stuff!

Worth owning just for its guidance on tables

All seven of the existing reviews award five stars to this book, and rightly so. I produce templates and other tools for users with diverse skill levels that are intended to help generate great output at minimal effort, and that's not easy. Since you can skin a cat many different ways in Office, getting direct guidance on the preferred method is uncommon, and welcome. My advice: buy two copies, and give one to an acolyte among your users who might actually start to read it and start a movement within your organization on how to finally use MS Office to something close to its potential. Well done, Ms Krieger.

Another good preparation book from Matt

This book provides a very nice preparation experience for its associated exam. Like the previous edition for .NET 3.5, the WPF coverage is quite good, though more limited. Due to changes in the scope of some of the Microsoft exams, the one associated with this book include both Windows Forms and WPF, meaning that there is less WPF coverage here than in the previous version. As such, for WPF details, I'd recommend purchasing the prior version of the book (for .NET 3.5) if you want a comprehensive review of WPF features.

The inclusion of Windows Forms in this book, though it displaces some WPF material, is fairly comprehensive and integrates well with its mirror WPF material. It's very helpful seeing a WPF technology and its associated Windows Forms counterpart. These parallels illustrate how Windows forms technologies have continued to evolve and incorporate some very useful technologies, such as property bindings and interaction with WPF elements.

One worthwhile point to note is that this book is not quite comprehensive for the exam, as prior versions have been. Again, this owes to the fact that Microsoft re-scoped its exams, including Windows Forms, WPF, and application security in this exam (amongst other topics). While the material presented in this edition covers WPF and Windows Forms well, there are a number of topics that are either glossed-over or not present, but are addressed in the exam. These topics can easily be supplemented with some reading on MSDN, however, and their absence does not diminish the usefulness of the book.

Surprisingly, there are very few typos and / or errors in this edition. It's a pleasant surprise given that most editions have at least a few incorrect statements. The practice tests are on-par with those of other Microsoft Press exam kits, having a few errors, but nothing that isn't immediately noticeable and worthwhile in that it prompts additional reading.

I recommend this book to anybody that seeks to prepare for the exam. However, I caution you that unlike other exams and preparation kits that cover all the material quite comprehensively, the breadth of this exam makes a single research book a bad idea (you would be at a borderline-passing level with just this book). At the very least, review materials on MSDN. If you want to cover everything for the exam, this book in conjunction with either the Microsoft Press 70-536 and / or the 70-502 training kit(s) should be about right to give you a good margin on the exam.

Let me start by saying that this book was my first encounter with WPF ever, and i didn't have a lot of experience with Windows Forms either. But i wanted to get a certification, and decided to take the leap. Mainly because at my previous company i worked for, we were moving towards newer desktop technology.

I bought this book around its release date, read it cover to cover, answered all trial questions and ran about ten test exams from the CD rom.

I took my first exam in June and failed... Not misereably, but it was still a blow. Most exam questions were just a little more difficult then the book contents and sample questions. So then you are too often in doubt and make errors during the exam. Also, some questions/topics came out of the blue which is a complaint about this book.

I can imagine that new questions/topics are added to the exam now and then, especially so soon after the first training kits come out, but that made it pretty difficult for me.

After a cooldown period i started looking for additional material. After downloading some trial packages i decided to buy a training kit from Ucertify.com. The questions proved to be slightly more challenging and their training software is very well developed. However where this book by Matthew is lacking some details on WPF, the Ucertify kit doesn't teach you a lot about WinForms.

However combining the knowledge from both sources made me pass the exam a few weeks ago. Still not with a high score, but here's a happy person :)

A note about the CD rom questions: i found about 10-15 questions which had incorrect answers set, which is really annoying.
Also a note on the Ucertify.com kit. There's a lot of 'braindump' warnings going around about many downloadable certification kits and exam questions, but this is really not like that. On the exam i got a couple of 'near matches', but all other questions where still very different.

Worst Test Prep Book EVER

I rarely write reviews but this one deserves what it gets. This is the WORST TEST PREP BOOK EVER. The topics are poorly organized and too shallow. The actual test questions are way more detailed and in depth than anything presented in this book.
My main gripe, however, is with the practice tests on the CD. The questions are vague and often have errors in logic. But what really gets me is when I review a question the test says I got wrong and I look at MSDN's article on the topic and the question clearly comes STRAIGHT FROM THE MSDN ARTICLE. My answer is correct and the answer the practice test says is right WON'T EVEN COMPILE. I saw this on several questions in the tests.

Complements his other Scrum book nicely

This is a good account of Scrum practices as used "for real" in several case studies, plus some general evangelism and two very useful appendices on Scrum rules and terminology definitions.

I do think it has become somewhat hard for Schwaber to imagine what it is like NOT to be familar with Scrum, as it is so deeply embedded in his thinking and practice! For instance, he uses the term "sashimi" early on without bothering to define it in Scrum terms - that comes later (Hence the 4 stars instead of 5. Would really like to give 4 1/2.)

His other book "Agile Software Development with SCRUM" has more in-depth coverage of the subject. It includes a fuller account of the essential difference between defined and empirical processes which is at the heart of Scrum and other agile methods. In this one, he does include the same reference to the (hard to find!) industrial engineering textbook that explains this, but in a more offhand way - just quoting a key paragraph a couple of times.

Perhaps the best sequence of reading depends on your role. If, like me, you are a developer, the first book is, I think, more rewarding for in-depth study and relationship to Agile principles in general, while this one is a good follow-up on implementation realities. For a manager wondering whether Scrum deserves exploring, this book will give a strong (positive) answer to that question, and can be followed by more in-depth study with the other book.

Concise read on the value of Scrum -- and how to implement it

I bought this after hearing Scott Hansleman talk about it on his scrum podcast at [...]. I figure Scott seems to have had great success with Scrum at his place of work ([...]so any book he recommended on the topic ought to be solid. Indeed it is!

The book's laid out in a series of stories which illustrate responsibilities and typical problems to overcome for the Scrum roles of Product Owner, ScrumMaster, and Team. The stories are short, concise, and followed up by Lessons Learned which cover salient highlights for the various points made in the section. Throughout the book runs Schwaber's theme of how one can use Scrum to solve any number of problems and increase the productivity of their development work.

What's really nice about the book is that there are stories of failures as well as successes. Software development is rarely all roses, so it's nice to see a couple examples where things didn't work -- and a solid analysis of what went wrong in those cases.

On the flipside, I'd have liked a bit more detail on constructing the sprint and product backlogs. I realize that traipses somewhat over into the realm of software estimation, but more fleshing out would have been helpful. However, there's a great example of scaling Scrum and rolling up numerous product backlogs from lower levels in to a larger backlog for a major system, so that's quite beneficial.

The book's terrifically well-written, is an easy read, and is formatted such that you're able to quickly pick up the important bits of Scrum. It's a terrific read for anyone looking to bring some sensible, tailorable processes to their software development efforts.

With its nicely formatted how-to instructions, detailed documentation of command-line commands, intelligent explanatory text, and broad scope, this book makes a great reference for a family or business that uses Windows XP extensively. Even the illustrations are more helpful than usual, largely because the publisher has gone to the trouble of annotating many of them with pointers and labels.

Bott and Siechert deal with the most controversial features of Windows XP, notably product activation, in a straightforward way. They simply explain what activation is for, tell how to go about it, and move on. If you're a power user interested in getting around activation and performing other unsanctioned hacks, look for your information in online newsletters. This book plays by Microsoft's rules, and that's fine. It's obvious that the authors have had access to Windows XP for some time, and spent a lot of time exploring its new features. Excellent power user's guide

This huge volume is definitely a must-have guide for everyone aspiring to becoming a Windows XP advanced user. Casual users should stay away for now until they become familiar with Windows. Also, strangely, you won't find coverage of Windows Movie Maker in this otherwise complete power user's guide to WinXP.
This "deluxe edition" is hardcover (vs. paperback for the regular, cheaper edition), has two added chapters (one on fax and one on advanced user adminitration), and includes a couple interesting e-books from Microsoft on the CD-ROM, in addition to an e-book version of the book itself.
This book covers both the Pro and Home editions of WinXP -- and each chapter has a handy brief discussion of the differences between the two editions. In fact, I find this feature, together with the two extra free e-books, worth the price premium over the regular edition. Besides, hardcovers are just easier to lay down on a desk and they last longer as well.
In terms of "meaty stuff," this book will satisfy your hunger for advanced knowledge of XP. After reading the book you'll become an XP expert. If you want to become a guru, then get the other "Inside Out" books such as Windows XP Networking Inside Out and Windows XP Security Inside Out (highly recommended). Or you can use this book as a jumping board to acquire some advanced knowledge and then figure out the guru-advanced topics yourself. Either way, this book can help you master Windows XP.
Still not convinced? Pick a copy and read the chapter on system optimization. Clearly written and organized, the chapter gives you everything you need to know about optimizing Windows, including the best explanation of the performance monitor I've come across (as well as concrete steps for taking advantage of this and other tools). Then you'll see how useful this book is.

Microsoft Press is making XP a welcome addition.

After installing Windows XP I began to ask several question about the configuration and administration of the operating system. I found this book to have the answers and much, much more information for me. I also found that this 1250 page reference manual is very useful in studying for the Windows XP Professional Exam, 70-270.
Published by the company that produced the software, this book is broken down into 9 parts, with part 1 being the XP Overview of installing, configuring, deploying, moving files and components. Also covered here is accounts, permissions, policies, passwords and troubleshooting hardware.
Part 2 is the customization of XP with task scheduling, power management which includes hibernation. Part 3 is the explorer which has areas like managing and finding files, encryption and offline work covered. Part 4 is the digital media section which includes the media player, scanner and imaging.
Part 5 is the advanced IE area including internet security, customizing Outlook express, web hosting and communications. Part 6 the goes into system maintenance and recovery, which tackles topics like routing and disk management, troubleshooting errors messages and regedit.
Part 7 is the networking part talking about small to large networks, sharing resources and remote access. Part 8 teaches about system administration with topics like profiles and policies and the even viewer. Finally part 9 is the Appendices which include the command prompt. MMC, services and system information.
The cd-rom included has a number of utilities and tools and you need to have XP installed in order to run the cd. Also include the e-book of the book and overall an excellent manual to have on hand.

Just plain good

Like someone who wrote one of the earlier reviews, every few years I also find myself buying another 1,000+ page book about whatever new version of Windows I can finally no longer avoid installing. Then several years later I try (unsuccesfully) to give it away in a yard sale, never having looked at more than a handful of pages.
But this one is different. Excellent writing (even if it is a big, fat book; some things just can't be made short) and excellent information. (How happy are you when you've spent days looking for an obscure tidbit, and you turn to the index in a new book and not only find it, but three whole pages devoted to it?) This book had paid for itself before I even got out of the bookstore. (Ooops. I suppose I shouldn't have said that here.) And--even more amazing--I've actually spent time reading it since I got it home.

C# has been around for awhile now, but popularity has only grown in the nearly 10 years it has been around. If you are new to C# development, this is a solid guide that will get you up and moving, creating C# applications quickly and more efficiently than ever before. I wish the layout was a little more exciting to stand out a bit from other books on the shelf, but the approach used here gets the job done. If you are an experienced C# developer, the heart of the book lives in chapters 27-28. The developer learns how to put to use multi-core processors and get more done in their application faster than ever before. Threading used to be a difficult thing to do and control in the past. With Visual Studio 2010 this confusing act is covered well here so that C# apps written today can hit light speed and beyond!!

This is the one

I can't vouch for how good this book would be for a complete beginner. If, like me, you are already experienced in an another programming language then this is by far the best book to get for learning c# and the .Net 4 framework. I should know, I spent ages in a computer bookshop comparing all of the c# books on offer.

As of the date of this review (March 2011) the book is bang up to date with a good explanation of some of the latest Microsoft innovations such as WPF (Windows Presentation Framework) design and controls, XAML (eXtensible Application Markup Language). Both of these scary acronyms are easier to understand than they sound, partly because they are so well explained by the author.

I like the easy instructional style and well worked out examples. John Sharp does not waste words but spells out each programming/design principle with just enough text and more importantly, just enough example code for you to get the point.

I am a huge fan of the Head First series and was tempted to buy the Head First c# book. I had a look through some of the chapters of the Head First c# book and have to report that it is not up to the usual (very high) Head First standards.

The only puzzling thing about the author is that he is a Gillingham supporter. Why??? :-) Apart from that weirdness I recommend Step by Step very highly.

Well, i'm 7 chapters into this book and so far, it is amazing. It is amazing because all the examples work perfectly. Unlike other programming books that leave you stranded, this one is absolutely amazing. I've had to throw away other programming books because they were garbage, but this one will be used as a reference for a long time.

Excellent Material, Poor Use of Medium

My experience with the Windows XP Professional Resource Kit is mixed. Obeying the directive to accentuate the positive, I will first get the negative comments out of the way.
I wish I could have bought just the CD and saved all the paper used to print the book. There is nothing in print that cannot be found in the CD. What is missing from the disc are all the tools Microsoft previously included with Resource Kits that allowed you to truly exploit the operating system and tweak it to your version of perfection. If this documentation were available without the book, Microsoft could drastically reduce the price and make this Resource Kit much more affordable. Given Microsoft's push to make everything digital, I'm surprised the printed book is offered at all.
The information presented, either on the CD or in print, is very complete and it is hard to find fault with the information presented. Some people may be put off by the opening chapters, which deal with the absolute basics of installations and such, yet I would defend its inclusion. There are probably buyers of this product that are beginners and this information will be valuable to them.
No new ground is broken with the documentation because, despite the hype, XP is not all that revolutionary. The information in the chapters will ease the transition of casual users to this new operating system and provide in depth information to those who need it. The Resource Kit, however, is not a How To manual for complete computer novices. Some degree of familiarity with computer operation is presumed, even if you are a previous Windows 98 home user migrating to Windows XP. To truly benefit form this Resource Kit you should be a seasoned computer user, comfortable with tinkering with registry settings, network settings and other advanced features.
While the documentation is titled XP Professional, the text goes a long way to explain that XP Home is essentially the same operating system as the Professional Version with the exception of some advanced networking features. Any functionality issues with XP Home will be covered in this book by referencing the same feature in the Professional version and solved in the same way. This is very nice to IT Support personnel and related professionals.
Overall, I am very pleased with the information in the set. I am disappointed in the presentation. Next time, I'd like to see two versions offered: just the CD and just the printed book. This would allow the pricing to be reduced and users would be able to purchase only the format they will get the most use from.

Disappointing for a RSK

I've read the RSKs for Windows 95, 98, NT4 and 2000, and this one is pretty disappointing. As a user's guide, this would have been fantastic, but as a resource to system administrators that need to know the nuts and bolts of the OS, it leaves a lot to be desired. On many occasions I have found that information I really needed to know about was not covered sufficiently to solve my problem or answer my question, and I had to resort to the Microsoft Knowledge Base or other on-line articles for the answers.
The publication also seems very rushed, and perhaps completed before the release version of the OS was finished. Many screen shots depict tabs that aren't there and informational paragraphs reference components that don't exist or were merged with something else. The organization seems a little rough, and the index does not always prove helpful.
Perhaps one of the problems was that unlike most RSKs, there are no additional resources/tools that come with this one. The included CD-ROM contains nothing more than the book in their HTML Help (CHM) format.
If you're looking for something that shows you how to use the OS, this is a great title. If you're looking for something that will really get your hands dirty and let you perform serious administration, you may want to look elsewhere.

Not for beginners

I have been programming for over 10 years, but my Windows specific C++ programming is relatively weak due to inexperience with it. Note that if you are in the same boat, you will need additional resources (web based, help files, other books) on top of this book as this book assumes you are already proficient in creating Windows apps.
They make no attempt to tell you otherwise, it is an expert level book - but even if you already know C++ well, there is much Windows specific details that this assumes you know.

Great book and very useful, just not entry level, so know that going in.

This is da book

If you want to do any serious development in Window, this is the book to get. Once you read and understand the basic C++ books, and want to get beyond simple applications, you need this book. This is not a beginner text, but a grown-up book on what is happening inside windows and how to use it in your application. I found this book invaluable in building multithreading, port i/o, virtual array management in my application. The author really knows his stuff and presents it in a very readable fashion. The source code for the examples in this book are well-commented and I have found it easy to take code fragments from then to use in my applications.

This book is a keeper.

Had all of the info I was looking for...

As you guessed by the title, this book covered exactly what I was looking for. C/C++ programmers who are dealing with Windows kernel objects, shared memory objects, events, semaphores, security and the like will appreciate this.

The book covered and clarified information that may/may-not be available on MSDN (I never saw it there while searching...), and did so with an overall approach that ties the topics together, shows how they are used, and generally is more understandable. I appreciated this book much more than jumping around through a bunch of disjointed MSDN pages trying to understand how these elements work. The book gives you deep understanding and more than a few tricks you can use in the debugger.

Beginning developers, or developers working on managed code prob. wouldn't have much use for this book. Consider this the nitty-gritty reference manual for how all of the low level stuff gets done.

I appreciate this book, it won't end up back at the used bookstore.
