Good book, lots of typo'd/wrong commands
By Raymond J. Ackley
The good: The book quickly dispenses what you need to know for the exam, then tells you what you need to survive in the real world. I.e. Powershell and scripting. Coming from a 20,000+ user environment it is refreshing to see a book actually written for the "real world".

The bad: I'm only through the first four chapters, and oddly enough I find myself actually doing the examples. To my surprise, about one in ten commands is flat out wrong. Parameters are specified that aren't part of the program being executed (p.122), PowerShell commands that are typo'd bad enough to throw errors that would be undecipherable to most people (p.127), etc.

And no, despite the fact that they show it about 20x, you cannot use %username% from the command line to set a variable with dsmod as they show it, since it uses the logged in users' username (the admin running the command).

If they would have proof read and tested these commands before throwing them in the book it likely would have raised by rating of this book to a five. However, it's hard to overlook such glaringly obvious and *frequent* errors. I hope the other books in this series aren't as bad in this department.

Proofreading Wanted!
By A. Amos
I recently recieved this Microsoft Press training Kit for Exam: 70-640,
MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-640): Configuring Windows Server 2008 Active Directory

After reading through its over 860 pages of information, I was equiped to pass the Certification Exam. Although it is an excellent tool for preparing for the test, there are quite a few errors in the text. The book seemed rushed, as if the writers were trying to meet a deadline. There are many references to outside sources for concept understanding throughout the book. Some of the answers in the back do not match the questions in the lessons from each chapter. A few mispelled/misplaced words, and some information, such as on Page 280 which states that you can troubleshoot RSoP with Gpupdate.exe is just not correct. The statement should say Gpresult.exe instead. Nothing that a little more proofreading would not have solved.

All in all, the book was easy to grasp. I was happy overall with the content supplied by the curriculum. Once the errors are resolved, I feel that this will be an excellent source for 70-640 enthusiast.

don't take 70-640 without this book
By TechnoDave61
For anyone taking their 70-640 exams, you can't pass without this book, it has most of the updated information for the exams. I found out the hard way by buying the first edition (before the second edition was available)then took the exam to find out they were testing on R2. 30% of the exam is on R2 and isn't available in the first edition i.e. Direct Access, Socket pooling, Gpo Templates, Powershell scripts, Object management, R2 DNS features.
So don't buy the first edition.

Glad to read Microsoft's contribution to the process of developing secure code
By Richard Bejtlich
I read six books on software security recently, namely "Writing Secure Code, 2nd Ed" by Michael Howard and David LeBlanc; "19 Deadly Sins of Software Security" by Michael Howard, David LeBlanc, and John Viega; "Software Security" by Gary McGraw; "The Security Development Lifecycle" by Michael Howard and Steve Lipner; "High-Assurance Design" by Cliff Berg; and "Security Patterns" by Markus Schumacher, et al. Each book takes a different approach to the software security problem, although the first two focus on coding bugs and flaws; the second two examine development processes; and the last two discuss practices or patterns for improved design and implementation. My favorite of the six is Gary McGraw's, thanks to his clear thinking and logical analysis. The other five are still noteworthy books. All six will contribute to the production of more security software.

"Security Development Lifecycle" (SDL) is unique because in many ways it exposes the guts of Microsoft's product development process. I cannot recall seeing another technical company share so much of its internal procedures with the public. One of the most interesting aspects of SDL is the attention paid to security after a product is shipped. No one at Microsoft breathes a sigh of relief when boxes appear on store shelves. Instead, Microsoft explains how it conducts security response planning in ch 15 and security response execution in ch 17. (Between the two is ch 16 -- only 3/4 of a page! Why bother?)

Although I liked SDL overall (enough to justify 4 stars), I thought it suffered three major problems. First, I don't think the audience was defined properly. p xviii mentions "managers" as the primary target, along with architects and designers. Specifically, "this is not a book for developers." Yet, ch 12 ("Secure Testing Policies") is definitely for programmers. A manager probably not going to know what a "null pointer dereference" is; at the very least that is not a subject that should be discussed in a book for managers.

Second, I think SDL suffers a little too much overlap with the earlier Microsoft book "Writing Secure Code, 2nd Ed." WSC2E addressed writing documentation, security testing ,and obviously secure coding in much the same language as repeated in SDL. Sometimes repetition is justified, but perhaps those subjects appeared in WSC2E for a reason and did not belong in a book for managers.

Third, and most importantly, Microsoft continues its pattern of misusing terms like "threat" that started with "Threat Modeling" and WSC2E. SDL demonstrates some movement on the part of the book's authors towards more acceptable usage, however. Material previously discussed in a "Threat Modeling" chapter in WSC2E now appears in a chapter called "Risk Analysis" (ch 9) -- but within the chapter, the terms are mostly still corrupted. Many times Microsoft misuses the term risk too. For example, p 94 says "The Security Risk Assessment is used to determine the system's level of vulnerability to attack." If you're making that decision, it's a vulnerability assessment; when you incorporate threat and asset value calculations with vulnerabilities, that's true risk assessment.

The authors try to deflect what I expect was criticism of their term misuse in previous books. On p 102 they say "The meaning of the word threat is much debated. In this book, a threat is defined as an attacker's objective." The problem with this definition is that it exposes the problems with their terminology. The authors make me cringe when I read phrases like "threats to the system ranked by risk" (p 103) or "spoofing threats risk ranking." On p 104, they are really talking about vulnerabilities when they write "All threats are uncovered through the analysis process." The one time they do use threat properly, it shows their definition is nonsensical: "consider the insider-threat scenario -- should your product protect against attackers who work for your company?" If you recognize that a threat is a party with the capabilities and intentions to exploit a vulnerability in an asset, then Microsoft is describing insiders appropriately -- but not as "an attacker's objective."

Don't get me wrong -- there's a lot to like about SDL. I gave the book four stars, and I think it would be good to read it. I fear, though, that this is another book distributed to Microsoft developers and managers riddled with sometimes confusing or outright wrong ways to think about security. This produces lasting problems that degrade the community's ability to discuss and solve software security problems. I also question the implication that SDL is great and everything else doesn't produce verified security improvements. I can understand denigrating Linux, but is Microsoft afraid to acknowledge the security record of an OS like OpenBSD?

Good, but not great
By Alexander T. Barclay
I have been very impressed with other offerings from the Microsoft professional series and was excited when this book was released. This is not a technical book like "Writing Secure Code" and "Code Complete" but a book aimed at managers responsible for software projects. My opinion is not based on real world experience of large software projects, but on academic projects smaller in scale than those of Microsoft.

The introductory material is weak, part 1 which explores the reasoning and history behind the SLD seemed to be stretched needlessly, repeating the same information multiple times. Chapter 4 which provides the management impact of the SDL lacks focus, and does not justify the need (ROI) for the SDL.

Part 2 goes though each step of the SDL in detail. Overall, this section is more polished and for the most part does a good job of covering each domain in detail. While this book is focused on managerial and operational activities, there are times where it awkwardly delves into specific technical details. Chapter 10 (Documents, Tools, Practices for customers) and chapter 15 (Response planning) are strong chapters which most everyone can lean from.

Part 3 is a series of reference materials. Chapter 20 (Crypto) and 21 (Compiler Options) are good guidelines to compare your organizations own practices against.

Strengths:

+ Talks about a real methodology being used at MS everyday

+ Excellent references, cites many foundation papers

+ Gives the reasoning behind many decisions in development in SDL

+ Good discussion of threat trees

+ Managerial focused chapters are well thought out and complete

Weaknesses:

- Technical information is MS focused

- Might be acronym heavy for non-technical/security managers

- Does not reference other secure development processes, such as IATF section 3

- Does not reference NIST 800 series for risk analysis

What I would like to see:

*Expanded Chapter 5 (Education and Awareness), giving more information on the curriculum of security classes offered.

*Better balance between the technical and managerial aspects of the SDL. This book would be stellar either with more technical information (platform independent) or by focusing the book more on managerial aspects of the SDL.

*The actual SDL documents being used at MS

Overall, this is a good book, I would recommend it. However I do think a second edition would help this book immensely.

Managerial View of the Microsoft Approach to Security
By John Matlock
As is well known, Microsoft software has been known in the past for producing software that had numerous problems in the security area. It finally became so obvious that the company was forced to make a major change in emphasis regarding the security holes in their products.

Microsoft is, of course, a huge software development organization. To move the organization into writing more secure code it was necessary to develop plans, procedures, classes for managers and programmer and the like to implement writing more secure code. The resulting effort is called the Security Development Lifecycle (SDL).

The results of implementing SDL are summarized in the Introduction to the book. Here are two newspaper headlines quoted there:

Gartner Recommends Against Microsoft IIS (eWeek, 2001)

We actually consider Microsoft to be leading the software industry now in improvements in their security development life cycle (CRN 2006)

This book is aimed at the people managing and defining software projects. It does not contain very many specific code examples that would appeal to the developer. This is not to say that developers shouldn't read it, but that it is not a detailed techie document.

The CD that comes with the book includes several documents that extend the concepts talked about in the book and a six part security class video conducted by the authors.

One note of caution. This book is on the Microsoft approach to security. It's what they are doing. It works for them. But there are also other approaches such as that being implemented by organizations such as the US Government.

Homepage Usability: 50 Websites Deconstructed, by Jakob Nielsen, Marie Tahir

The book begins with a briefing on Jakob's web usability principles, themselves culled from years of research. The 50 sites fall under such categories as Fortune 500 Sites, Highest-Traffic Sites, and E-Commerce Sites.
The content is simply presented: Four book pages are devoted to each homepage. The first page is a clean screenshot of the site's homepage (for readers to make their own, unbiased judgments), followed by a page that explains the site's purpose and summarizes its success--or failure--at usabilty. The third and fourth pages are devoted to crtiques, where Jakob and Marie present no-holds-barred commentary for specific usability practices, as well as suggestions for improvement. Although only the homepage of each site is analyzed, many of the critiques can be applied to overall website design.

Amazon.com Review
While there is a plethora of books available that provide tips on Web design, most authors leave a significant gap between the theory and practice--a gap that is left up to the reader to fill. Homepage Usability: 50 Websites Deconstructed boldly steps into that gap with specific observations and suggestions backed with solid quantitative analysis. This book focuses only on home page design as the most important point of presence for any Web site.

This definitive work is coauthored by Jakob Nielsen--the accepted industry expert in Web usability--and Marie Tahir, an expert in user profiling. Their collaboration has produced a guide of such rare practical benefit that Web designers will likely wear out their first copy scouring the pages to savor every last morsel of wisdom.

The book begins with a chapter of precise guidelines that serve as a checklist of the features and functionality to include on your home page. The specifics found in categories such as "revealing content through examples" and "graphic design" will quickly hook you and whet your appetite for more. These guidelines are followed up with hard statistics and an examination of the ominous Jakob's Law: "Users spend most of their time on other sites than your site." Here you'll find some interesting statistics about how various conventions like search, privacy policies, and logos are used.

All this leads up to the showcase element of the book--a systematic deconstruction of 50 of the most popular home pages on the Web. The authors painstakingly pick apart each in an uncompromising autopsy of usability. Each site is graphically analyzed for its use of real estate and summarized with the frankness only found from true experts. Then each section of the home page is bulleted and analyzed for potential improvements.

It's a bold move to offer a critique of industry-standard Web sites such as Yahoo, CNET, and eBay, but the authors have done such a fine job that the designers of those sites will surely make reading this book a high priority. For the rest of us, this work will serve as an invaluable gospel. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Design guidelines, convention usage, screen real estate, navigation, content presentation, search facilities, links, graphics and animation, advertising, news, customization, and customer feedback.

From Library Journal
Nielsen, dogmatic don of web usability, and his strategy director Tahir believe that a company needs a well-designed homepage to succeed online. They provide 113 brief usability guidelines that lead into a chapter on homepage statistics, giving readers an idea of conventions to follow or break. The homepages of 50 major web sites, from About.com to Yahoo.com, are then pictured and critiqued in terms of those recommendations and statistics. A useful resource for both novice and professional web designers; recommended for all libraries.

50 Web Site Deconstructed
By A Customer
According to this book, users spend most of their time on other sites than your site... When a user visits your site, he/she will be bringing a large load of mental baggage accumulated from prior visits to thousands of other home pages. So by the time they reach your web site, users have accumulate a generic mental model of the way a homepages are supposed to work, based on their experience on these other sites.
It is a very interesting point. According to authors of the book, there are few large web sites that might count themselves among the first 10 to 20 sites visited by new users. And design of these web sites dictate the design conventions that a user will expect when he/she visits other web sites.
Example of some of these conventions mentioned in the book are:
upper-left corner is the best place for a site logo
upper-right corner are more generic locations for search widgets and "help" links
Navigation of the site is best usable either as a tab-style (such as in amazon.com) or as a column on left side of the page (such as in CNN.com)
Links should be blue-underlined, and visited links should be purple-underlined
footer navigation links should be only for "foot-note-related" content and should be limited to no more than 7 links
on and on it goes
So how do authors derive these conclusions? The process is actually very interesting. They conduct studies of top 50 chosen web sites and group their findings into conventions.
The book also "deconstructs" those 50 chosen Home Pages, and provides annotated analysis. You may find it interesting. Among those are such sites as About.com, Accenture.com, Yahoo.com, BBC Online, CNET, Disney, eBay, Microsoft, IBM and many more.
Although majority of the book is on annotating home pages, authors also give some generic tips on home page design. Some of those tips I recall are:
liquid page layout is preferred over fixed sized tables
the most optimal page width is 760 pixels (for fixed layout)
page length of the homepage should be around two full screens, but not more than four
frames suck big time
horizontal scrolling is the curse
"Guest Books" are not for pros
Do not use exclamation marks!
and on and on it goes
While reading homepage annotations, I felt very strong emphasis on the title of the homepages (the one between and tags). These tags are easily left un-noticed, one would think. But properly chosen titles make big difference while bookmarking your page. Try it yourself.
In other words, do not start your titles with "The" and "Welcome", because in person's favorites lists, it would be misplaced in the alphabetical order.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone venturing in Web Designs.
P.S. Although the book is on Home Page usability, the book itself doesn't seem "usable" at all. Size of the book is so clumsy that doesn't fit in a standard sized book shelf.

Excellent and Worthwhile Information
By Susanna Hutcheson
After reading some of the reviews here, I almost didn't buy this book. But I'm glad I did. I agree that some people might find some of the critiques nit-picking. I also agree that the authors are not qualified to give copywriting advice.
But the point about exclamation marks on the homepage is a good one. They are overused. I've overused them myself. And they do make a page look like so much hype in many cases. Copywriters get carried away with hype and the web is no place for that.
I don't think we can take anyone's advice in total all the time. But I can tell you this. After I read only a few pages in this book I saw changes that I needed to make.
After looking at the critiques in the book, I can easily see the small very fine details that can make all the difference in the world in usability and, moreover, in marketing.
Jakob does extensive testing with real people and I have a lot of faith in his findings. His word is not the last word. But I trust him and I think people who are involved with designing or writing Web sites should read what he writes.
They don't have to agree with everything. But not to read him would be a mistake.
The changes I've made due to his advice have paid big dividends. I don't hold 100 percent to everything he says. But I believe I have a site that is very user-friendly in part because I apply his principals and I pass them on to my clients.
If people would just read the intricate detail in each critique, they would see what one small change could make and why it should be done the way the authors suggest.
I would have given the book five stars but the book itself had some misspelled words and it used the word "website" instead of "Web site" which is the accepted way to write it. I don't necessarily blame the authors for that. It was probably a low level editor who let those errors happen. But they shouldn't be there. Especially in a slick, well designed book and a book about usability and perfection.
But to anyone involved in making decisions about a Web site --- especially designers and copywriters --- I highly recommend this book.

Simply Amazing
By Eric Leebow
In my research of writing my You Are Here Internet Guides, I have personally visited and toured well over 15,000 Web sites and I must say I find this book very impressive. A flawless job of deconstructing these 50 sites makes you want to look more introspectively at what visually stimulates viewers. It explains in detail what insightfully makes Web design sufficient and efficient for the viewer. The commentary is very easily spoken and will make you think twice about some characteristics of Web design. Things you may have normally taken for granted in Web design are pointed out. For instance, intricacies such as arrows pointing at words and how to keep it simple with text links make the user well informed. Or how some redundancies keep the user from reading more, and in turn decrease the impact of the intended marketing message shows that somes sites may be susceptible to overusability. The book takes the word "clutter" and defines it, and explains ways around it. The simplicity concept is explored deeply, explaining a site can be easy to use without sacrificing good content.
I like how each site deconstructed has a pie chart that tells you can quickly and easily look at and see what the homepage allocates space for.
Much thought put into critiquing the sites. I found the homepage design statistics in the beginning to be quite useful and accurate.
Overall, the book is a masterpiece. There is a chock full of thought into each homepage.

A visual manual but on par for the P&S series
By R. Freiberger
I bought and read through this book while learning about Access 2010. While the book was fair priced and offered very clear images and popular questions with detailed steps. I think this book would be a great on the book shelf to keep near you when working on Access or just wanting to know what features are available on Access.

The only problem I have is that the book while showing steps how to complete a step, does not include all of the details. For example, there is a step that asked to add a database or enter in a value, but the step is described as "enter a value" instead of "enter in a numerical value". I know it's nit picking but as I was reading through the steps I was reading felt very vague, as if I was reading a manual written by a expert Access person who didn't want to take the time explaining each step.

I should note that I have read 3 of Microsoft's "Step by Step" and "Build a program now" series mostly for programming languages but this is my first "Plain & Simple" book. I was looking for a quick intro to Access 2010 and features but following along with the steps were not as clear as I expected. I found that from Microsoft's site there are more tutorials available on Access as well as a "Step by Step" series to run through these on a greater detail.

Not meant for Access novices
By Evan Haglund
Prior to purchasing Access 2010, I had never had a need for any database before (at least not in its purest form), and had never used any earlier version of Access. I could tell that I had purchased powerful software, and needed some reference to help introduce me to the many things Access 2010 can do.

Access 2010 Plain & Simple is not that reference. It was clearly designed for persons who had used prior versions of Access, as one of its first chapters was addressed specifically to this topic. In addition, the book often introduced terms of art without any meaningful introduction or explantion (such as "Objects," "Application Parts," etc.). Even a one or two sentence explanation as to what these concepts were and how they fit into the overall logic of the program would have helped immensely.

In addition, the book purportedly offers many "step-by-step" processes for completing various tasks. However, I found that several of these processes were incomplete. FOr example, the step-by-step process for establishing relationships between tables was incomplete. The book instructed the user to "drag" a table's primary key to the "foreign key" slot on another table. However, as I followed the instructions, this was simply not possible without opening another dialog box, which was not part of the step-by-step instructions. It took me some time to figure out this step on my own.

As another reviewer noted, the book also fails to be as specific as it needs to be for the novice Access user. Concepts are introduced without any explanation as to their relevance, i.e., the author advises that a table can include multiple "primary keys," but it is only several chapters later that the reader is told "how" to create multiple primary keys, and even then, a meaningful explanation as to why one would want multiple primary keys is never provided.

I spent considerable time attempting to master Access with this book. I created my own test database in an effort to recreate what the book described. I learned a few things, hence the two stars, but I am not even close to being able to use the program for the reason I purchased it. I'm off to a bookstore hoping to find a better reference.

Both books are good but for learning about the mechanical part, the Troubleshooting Windows 7 text is essential. It is well written and shows what you can do to correct numerous things which come up while using Win 7.

Great set of books, looking forward to reading them.

I watched a webcast by the author of the "troubleshooting" volume. It was good so decided I needed to read his book.

A far cry from a study aid
By Jase T. Wolfe
It's a given that no one study guide will give you the understanding to pass the associated MCSE exam, but this barely qualifies as a study guide. For someone who has never worked with Windows before and has never seen XP before, this might be a good "Windows XP for Dummies"-like book. It does quickly gloss over most of the basics of the OS, how to network it and even how to deploy it, but falls short of even being a How-To for people looking to support and not wanting to study for the exam. A good example of just how much information this book lacks is to take the practice exam off the included CD-ROM. Less than five questions into the practice exam, the information needed to get the question right is not even covered in the book.
My suggestion would be to anyone who is looking to prep for the exam is to read the XP Resource Kit, the on-line help, and Microsoft's Readiness Review for XP - and leave this book on the shelf.

book review - MCSE Training Kit Exam 70-270
By T. Palin
I like the book. I took a training class, which didn't cover most of the topics in the book. We spent time in the class, but the explanation was for only certain topics. The book fills in the gaps, where the class had failed. I am going chapter by chapter practicing and it is helping me study for my certification. I am almost regretting paying for the class, now. Based on the fact the information was so lacking. I want to pass my test with the knowledge of knowing my craft. Not just studying to pass the test. This is the conversation I had with the salesperson at the school.

The most stupid "study guide" that I've ever seen.
By Arsen Badeyan
This book is far away for being a complete study guide for 70-270 exam preparation. Many questions, that you'll see on the actual exam, do not covered in this book at all. If you are familiar with Win XP, you'll find this book totally useless. If you're newbie to WinXP, you'll see the lack of explanations in many important topics. I'm totally disappointed with Microsoft Press. If you want to pass the exam, choose Sybex.
