Do Not buy this, the book is so out of date relative to the current Office365 environment it is worthless. All the links are no good and many of the quoted tools were discontinued before it was printed, that is only the first two chapters..

Terrific O365 guide for IT Pros and System Architects

It is a common misconception that cloud-hosted services and infrastructure (SaaS and IaaS) are turn-key propositions that require less skill than self-hosted platforms to plan, deploy, operate and maintain. The reality is that a well-rounded book on the topic - like MSFT O365 Administration - must spend roughly 200 pages discussing planning tools and directory services, before even touching on O365 management. If considering an O365 deployment, you want this book in the arsenal.

The book is written for "Information Technology (IT) system architects who need to integrate Office 365 with existing on-premises technologies," but it is equally useful to everyone in the traditional TechNet audience, including IT Operations teams and infrastructure experts (IT Pros). Extensive attention is given to System Center monitoring and management (via SCOM, DPM, VMM, SCO, etc.), and SCOM alerts. Another chapter helps you install Orchestrator. Another covers Service Manager automation. By this time we're 400 pages deep and getting into remote administration with PowerShell.

But wait, there's more! At this point the tenancy is configured complete with monitoring and management, but we haven't gone deep on any of the actual services - SharePoint Online, SkyDrive Pro, Exchange, and Lync. The content is roughly proportional to the pain: Exchange integration gets the heaviest treatment, followed by SharePoint and Lync.

The SharePoint online coverage is terrific in describing SP's topology and constraints, and the App Store model used to add features. The book does not attempt to cover user-scoped topics like governance, information infrastructure, or social features (perhaps because it was mostly written during beta, and prior to Microsoft's announcements about Yammer integration). So you also won't see discussion of common issues with hybrid scenarios, including Search and Social.

So what you have is a great book with the insights of experience to get you into the game, plus a wealth of tips and tooling to ease the road ahead. The book is (almost surprisingly) well-written and concise with many step-by-step sections including full screen shots. I didn't work through them all so there may be corrections as these products are updated, but in the cases I read, the high-level plan is discussed first, terms are explained, risks are identified and troubleshooting guidance is provided; minor changes in the UI should not trip up anyone using this book as a reference. With a service established and integrated, the team can then look to other resources to go further into planning governance, information architecture, user experience, and App development. Well done and recommended.

Good.Instructional Book

The book covers the how-to steps for setting up Office 365 and many of the various dependencies typical of an enterprise scenario. Where it falls short is on the architecture and concepts. For as many pages as it contains, much of that paper is consumed with screen shots of licensing agreements, which is just a distraction for more advanced users. I would have preferred that space be used to describe the architecture components in more depth. The book is great for what it is and recommended for people needing the introduction to O365 in an enterprise scenario.

The printed book is all about web apps. Probably okay, if that is how you'll use Access. But if you want to create a desktop database file, forget using this book. The chapters that you'd want are in one humongous pdf file that you'll need to download. And, oh by the way, there is no index for that info. Worthless.

Outstanding Reference for Access 2013, both Web Apps and Desktop Databases.

Preface:
I preordered and paid for this book months in advance without hesitation. I have met Jeff Conrad several times while attending the Microsoft Global MVP Summits in Redmond WA. Well aware Jeff’s passion for Microsoft Access and more recently Access Web Apps (new in Access 2013), I suspected this book would be outstanding in every context and that is exactly the case.

Side Note For Clarification:
In Access 2013, the distinction is between the ‘desktop side’ and the ‘web app side’. In Access 2010, it was ‘desktop side’ and ‘web database side’. In Access 2007 well, never mind. And prior to Access 2007, there was only the desktop side.

About The Book:
If you are looking for a comprehensive reference on Access 2013 Web Apps, this is the book for you. The subjects of design, deployment, configuration and maintenance, including Sharepoint administration and Access Services related to Access Web apps … are all covered in excruciating detail. Screenshots, step by step examples, tips and in-depth content are presented throughout the book.

And, if you are totally new to Microsoft Access in general, the ‘desktop’ side of Access 2013 is covered in an equally elegant manner as well. I’ve been developing with Microsoft Access 24x7x365 since v1.0 – 1992, so my main interest with regard to this book is Access 2013 Web Apps. However, I have discovered several very cool ‘tips’ for desktop databases as well.

But wait … there’s more. A ton of sample files, both for Desktop Databases and Web Apps are available for download. I’m currently developing several Web Apps and find myself continually referring to subjects in this book. In fact, without this book, navigating your way through the design aspects of Web Apps would be a daunting task.

Conclusion:
Highly recommended. Get this book and you will be Good To Go toward your journey into Access Desktop Databases and Access 2013 Web Apps.

A great general intro to collaboration possibilities

Some titles are misleading. Some are obscure. Some are too vague or general. Some say almost all there is to say about the book. This book's title really is one of the latter.

One, it's about Microsoft Office. More to the point it's about the new version of Office, though if you don't have the newest version there's still relevant information, but I think it might be frustrating when you notice how much the older versions can't do.

I have Office 365 University version. I also have Office 2010, Office 2007, and a few versions older. I'm a big fan of the new features, even though I'm wary about recommending an upgrade. It's a bit buggy, and has a tendency to crash at inopportune moments. This isn't about Office the product, however, this is about the book.

One of the great expanding features of Office over the years has been deploying the technology for group collaboration, even if you are not sharing the same computer, or network, or company or... Of course, there are features that expand the possibilities if you are on the same network and that network uses some of Office's lesser known elements. I've never heard of Lync, for instance, and since I don't have and won't have access to a Lync server, I probably won't ever have the ability to collaborate using it.

But, there's something for everyone in this book. Even if you have just the basic programs, Word, Powerpoint, Excel. I found the chapter on Onenote especially interesting, as I've long thought that program has potential well beyond its typical use. As a collaboration tool it takes on even more relevance, as it compiles the background work and research very neatly and accessibly.

This book doesn't go into a great deal of depth about any particular element of Office. It assumes you know the basics and addresses just those elements that can enhance collaboration. And it's certainly not just a book of instructions. There's a bit of philosophy of collaboration, a cheerleader of sorts, that is at the heart of this book. That's its most important feature, in my opinion, it tells you what can be done and helps you think in terms of collaboration possibilities.

I very much appreciate this book in helping me expand my own knowledge and understanding of what can be done. I am already taking steps to utilize the lessons and help others get involved in putting together group projects.

An excellent no-nonsense, no-fluff guide to collaboration using Microsoft products

If you're not already into collaborative computing or don't have an IT department or consultant to explain why you should be, this is an excellent place to start your education.

John Pierce has a very direct, clear manner to his writing, which will be a tremendous assist for the newcomer to moderately experienced reader.

Collaboration is far easier than it used to be, but it still remains a complex area, perhaps even more so with the addition of more sophisticated sharing platforms such as Microsoft's own SharePoint and Lync platforms. Heck, as Pierce points out, even experts disagree on how to classify SharePoint.

Pierce begins with a primer on collaboration and what an online collaborating team is and needs. This chapter is striking for its clarity. In less than 20 pages, Pierce provides an excellent primer on team computing.

Exclusively focusing on Microsoft products, Pierce covers SharePoint, Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Lync, OneNote and SkyDrive in a mere 294 pages! Yes, the treatments lack the depth a systems engineer would require, but Pierce isn't writing to that audience. He is addressing people who want to instigate team computing - collaboration - but don't have deep IT resources or experience. He presumes a basic knowledge of the Office applications and does shed a little - very little, in fact - light on SharePoint, Lync and SkyDrive. I do think SharePoint and Lync present more of a challenge than Pierce describes, but both are usable at a basic level.

You can view the Table Of Contents on Amazon and I suggest you do that to gain a fuller understanding of the breadth of Pierce's coverage.

On the whole, I highly recommend this book for anyone first considering introducing team computing (collaboration) to their organization. This is a clear, gentle introduction to the subject of using Microsoft Office for that purpose.

Easy to understand book on how to work as a team using MS Office as your main tool

Over the past few years, Microsoft has been improving their MS Office software to make work more efficient and faster to produce results, thus someone needed to explain how to use these tools in order to maximize their potential, resulting in this book.

Mr John Pierce (author of this book) does a great job of explaining not only how a group of people can work together, share ideas, have dissenting opinions for the better etc, but how to combine all MS Office and make them work together to get work done no matter where the people in the team are located or work schedule.

The book is very easy to read and with step by step guides on how to perform the various actions like how to manage user permisions, how to share the documents on other MS programs and such, that you will finish this book really quick.

Great Update

I have written VB-code before, so needed a book that went a little farther than just the beginning Visual Basic / Visual Studio procedures. Halvorson provides a thorough introduction to Visual Basic 2013 language essentials but also provides specific coding and design tips for Windows 8.1 (Windows Store) apps, traditional Windows desktop apps (using Windows Forms), web apps with ASP.NET, and also two excellent chapters on Windows Phone 8 programming. This book is also the only book out now with Visual Studio 2013 / Visual Basic 2013 / Windows 8.1 information. I guess there's a reason he's been authoring this book so long. Highly recommended.

Good Visual Basic Material

I purchased the book because I was looking for material and tools that would give me the knowledge necessary to write some engineering calculation programs that could be shared. The programs that I want to develope will include user input, complex number calculations and result outputs. Complex numbers are not inherently supported by the Basic program language, but can be handled with the appropriate sub procedures.

Dr. Michael Halvorson is very good at writing about Basic and Visual Basic programming. His Step by Step approach to teaching makes it very good for those not familiar with the mechanics of using the Visual Basic Software. His explanations of both programing language and software mechanics are very understandable. The book is a good review and introduction to the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) in Visual Basic. Book examples were developed with the Visual Basic Studio running under Windows 8.1. However, methods covered in the book will be applicable to any Visual Basic Studio installation.

It assumes that the user has some familiarity with both procedural and object oriented programming. Visual Basic (VB) supports both techniques and the book leads the reader through more advanced features of both. The book is divided into five parts. Parts I, II and III cover an Introduction to the Visual Basic Studio, designer interface and VB programming techniques. Parts IV and V cover data base, web programming and phone programming.

I have three of Dr. Halvorson's books and they are all very readable. I recommend any of Dr. Halvorson's books that may apply to the users application and experience level.

Excellent book

One of the first books on VB 2013 and is very well done. Very easy to follow the concepts and explanations. Great examples. Good explanation of the new features of which there are so many to consider when developing for the Store. The author clears up much of the confusion created by Microsoft.

I definitely recommend this book for those wanting to learn Visual Basic and VB 2013. It covers information for beginners as well as seasoned developers who need info about 2013.

Get Educated

This book is a wonderful comprehensive review of the key components used for SQL Server 2008 certification (exam 70-448). It covers SSIS, SSAS and SSRS in such a manner as to provide great background alongside some basic hands-on exercises to perform.

There is a practice exam disc included with the book which really helps in terms of studying for the exam and another disc with an evaluation copy of SQL Server 2008. All of this can take you from doing what I would call "cowboy SQL work" to a more professional, well founded, and optimized approach towards working with BI tools used with SQL Server.

The authors provide some good practical real-life recommendations on how to apply some of the techniques covered which helps round out the training. Collectively, this text has opened my eyes to more features and functionality in SQL than I did before picking it up and offers a way to actually apply the learning material -- albeit at a simple, high level. Just the same, one can always go deeper and experiment with some of the techniques. In the first chapter alone I learned of a technique that solved a problem which a consulting firm I worked with had an allergic reaction towards solving. I'm thinking the consulting firm might have benefited from this book.

I'm grateful that a careful reading of the exercises does allow one to complete the the vast majority of exercises and not have to deal with a problem so often faced in similar type texts -- nobody proof-read the thing to make sure the commands were accurate and actually worked! Seems like a pretty basic concept but this is so often not the case.

My only warnings to readers is that initial installation of the SQL Server evaluation software and setting up the DB's used as examples can prove tricky (but this is a MSFT issue, not one with the book or the way in which the conveys information). Why is it that sample DB's and installation of same cannot be made easier as it was with SQL 2005 early on? And I have a bit of a bone to pick regarding the Measure Up practice exam which has some out of synch references to the materials in the book. For example, the exam references Chapter 1 Lesson 5 yet the book has only 3 lessons in Chapter 1.

Finally, in the back of the book is a coupon code for taking the exam -- practically worth the price of the book. Your biggest investment will be the time necessary to study for the exam but in today's economy that would be a great investment to make.

Solid coverage of the exam material

Great book. I thought the layout was well done and flowed very logically. The examples, if studied carefully, provided good insight to the concepts and the functionality that is available in the BI stack. There is a lot of material on the exam and I'm impressed at how much was able to be packed into the 600 or so pages. One definitely has to work the examples to get the full understanding, though.

I do have to say that, to me, one of the drawbacks of the book was the set of practice exam questions that was included. I thought the questions were good enough, but the explanations were lacking. There wasn't enough detail as to why the answers were right or wrong. I've always used the Transcender exams to supplement any written material so that may be causing some of the bias, but I thought the explanations could have gone deeper than they did.

(Side note: I also purchased the Transcender exams for this exam. The combination of book and exam prep worked well for me. Passed the exam on the first try!)

I would definitely recommend purchasing the book. It not only met my expectation of an exam prep book, but it will also stay on my shelf as a reference book.

Great Resource for the 70-448 Exam!

I bought this book with the intention of using it and the practice exams included to study for my 70-448 exam, and I couldn't be more pleased with it. I passed the exam and I owe a lot of my success on the exam to this book. Without this book I would have not known which areas to study and passing the test would have been much harder. The book is organized very well, is well written, and prepares you to perform well on the exam. I have been using the MS BI tools for several years now so I didn't intend to get much out of the book besides a passing score on the exam, but I ended up learning about quite a few things I had never utilized in each of the tools. Good luck to anyone taking this exam!

A good framework for authoring, but does it scale down?

Can you really deliver a PowerPoint presentation without having any bullet points in the deck? This book does a good job of convincing that this is possible. However, I believe that the book's greater contribution is pointing out that most people structure presentations as a dump of data rather than taking into account their audience and the goal of their presentation -- why are people there? What do you want them to do or believe after you're done presenting? Even if you disagree with Cliff's convincing points on removing bullets from your decks, you should take to heart his framework for developing concepts and decks.

The running example is of a presentation for a proposal to approve some drug or another for the executive board of a company. While I'm sure there are lots of presentations done for boards, at the company I work most presentations are to groups of peer first-level managers and individual contributors about technical areas, product overviews, or change initiatives. The second most common are those to upper management on the status of a project or requests for resources. None of those are easily transformed into the marketing presentation, as they contain lots of data to present, sequences of actions that need to be taken, lists of stakeholders to be affected, etc. I could see how you can remove bullet points from certain types of presentations, but he didn't do a great job of convincing me that was true of all presentations.

Beyond Bullet Points is Right

These days, not many people head into meetings without the requisite set of PowerPoint slides. But critics are taking aim at PowerPoint and question whether it helps communication or shuts down thinking.

Cliff Atkinson believes he's built a better mouse trap. He wants us to dump boring, bullet-riddled slides, and he has a creative solution: he taps Hollywood-style storytelling to transform PowerPoint presentations from endless lists of bullet points into compelling communications.

Beyond Bullet Points is a guided methodology for using the power of storytelling to make PowerPoint presentations effective communication tools, not just speaker notes.

Atkinson relies on examples, templates, and downloadable information from his site to demonstrate his concepts and wean the reader off the use of mind-numbing bullets.

Atkinson will have you working on your story long before you touch the PowerPoint software, which is not common practice for many presenters. His book is full of other tips to help pull together a compelling and persuasive presentaton.

This book has transformed my business

I am a professional speaker and workshop leader. People have always told me I am good. But now I look at my presentations and think, "I cannot believe I used to present this garbage and people responded." The ideas I got from this book have completely transformed my business.

That may sound like a lofty claim but let me explain. I have never met Cliff Atkinson. Didn't know him from "Boo" before a month or two ago. I saw Cliff's book mentioned on a blog I read and began reading some of his posts. They were very useful and had a lot of great ideas. When this book was released, Cliff made an offer to do a makeover on a few presentations so that he could publically show people the results on his blog and in the discussion forum on his book site. When I saw that, I jumped at the chance.

My sales presentation drives the majority of my revenue. Why wouldn't I? If I could make it better, great. If I didn't like the result, I could always stick with what I had been doing.

Like it? Wow! The transformation has been amazing! You can see for yourself. Go to his blog and you can see my entire makeover process or you can see just a few before and afters in some of Cliff's blog posts. Look for Kim's makeover. I think you will agree the difference is truly amazing.

But it didn't stop there. What Cliff is really teaching is a structure for presenting information. Storytelling is one of the most powerful communication tools out there. I was a good story teller - but my stories weren't tight. They were not concise. The Beyond Bullet Point approach gives my audience exactly what they need to keep them interested and answer their questions - no more, no less. It puts you in their shoes.

I took Cliff's story structure and began to apply it in other areas. I have not only put it to work in other presentations, I tried a little experiment. I wrote one of my sixty second radio spots using Act 1 of Cliff's story structure. It began airing this week and right out of the gate it looks like it may be one of the best pulling ads I have ever run.

But it didn't stop there either. I have been working with an ad agency to develop a positioning statement (some would call it a tag line) and a jingle. We had been going back and forth on the positioning statement. Nothing popped. After I finished the story template I used for the sixty second spot, I sent it over to the creative guy at the ad agency and we instantly knew we had a positioning statement. It came naturally right out of Cliff's story structure.

So that is my story. I have never posted a review on Amazon before. I am an avid reader but I have no time to post reviews. For this book, I made time. I give this book my highest recommendation, which I will also do to readers of my newsletters and blog. I hope it is as powerful for you as it was for me.

Good if you need to plan your pricing model

When I got this book, I was hoping to learns the ins and outs of developing applications for a cloud environment, hopefully picking up a few good tips along the way. While "Developing Applications for the Cloud" is a good introduction to the Windows Azure model and the book suggests it's good for developers, I wouldn't recommend it. It is good however for software architects and business analysts who are contemplating a move to the cloud and need pointers on how to model their application.

The book begins with an in depth discussion of the Azure costing model and how various deployment scenarios will be affected by the Azure pricing structure. The example used in the book centers on a online subscription based service. Pricing scenarios are discussed in relation to Single-tenant and Multi-tenant models and which are likely to be more practical based on the expected usage detailed in the example. This pricing model extends to the transaction based nature of the example's subscribers and how best to architect the application to take advantage of latency and geographic expansion.

The final parts of the book focus on the actual code used to develop the application and how to test and deploy an application in a cloud environment. The example use Mock libraries and SQL Server as the destination data structures.

As this is the second book in a series about cloud development, it might be useful to read the first book first, which focuses on moving applications to the cloud. This book contains many references to the previous book and it will probably aid comprehension. I did not read the first book.

All in all, this is a useful book if you're looking to determine how to design an application for the cloud and what the best model might be.

A while back I started reading the Microsoft Patterns and Practices eBook "Developing applications for the cloud, on the Microsoft Windows Azure Platform." Now I finally got around writing down some of my thoughts on this book.

When I started reading the book my first thought was "strange", when I got deeper into the book, my thought was "strange" , when I finished the book, my thought was "strange but informative"

The initial "strange" was from the fact that it is an eBook you can buy but you can also read it completely free online. Since even the pdf can be downloaded for free I don't really see why you would buy the eBook.

The second "strange" was because I could not find a clear audience for the book. It goes from high level functional to low level development to low level infrastructure to business case. Every audience can get value out of the book and gain initial understanding but also every audience will skip parts just because they won't find it interesting,

In the end the missing clear audience and free online content remained but I also gained a lot of knowledge from the book. With a fun writing style that is combined with low level technical detail ( might need some changes since Azure is evolving rapidly) it gave me some new unique insights on how to think and reason about cloud applications.

In the end I highly recommend reading the free online version of this book. With the technical details for which you have to wonder if they still hold true and the parts that you probably want to skip I think it is just not worth the money.
