Amazon.com Review
3D Studio Max 3 Fundamentals unravels the intimidating maze of Kinetix's powerful animation software, bringing the special features of version 3 into focus. Although ideally suited for new users of Max, the author has sprinkled the book liberally with sidebars that help users of older versions get up to speed quickly with Max 3's new or changed features.

The book opens with a very handy explanation of computer animation fundamentals and 3-D graphics terms, plus a tour of the Max interface. It also pays special attention to some of the new features found in Max 3, such as the new file annotation feature (File Properties) and Max 3's new ability to reference external files and use them in a scene without importing them (called "XREFs" for "external references").

Knowing that you have to be able to build your model before you put it into a scene, "Modeling Fundamentals" covers Max 3's five basic modeling methods--spline, mesh, parametric, patch, and NURBS modeling--in detail with examples. The advantages of each method are defined, and suggestions for when to use each method (spline for organic modeling vs. mesh for general modeling) are provided.

"Scene Composition Fundamentals" explains basic composition concepts. Knowing which type of light to use, how to position and animate a camera, the focal length of the camera lens--these are some of the properties that impact the look of a scene. Plenty of illustrations and screen shots are used to demonstrate, for example, the difference in falloff values of lights, or the different rendering modes and how they impact the look of the final image.

"Animation Fundamentals" lays out, in understandable terms, how to go about animating in Max and what properties you can animate (just about anything). Tools receiving expert attention and liberal use of screen shots include motion paths, function curves, and the new Track View window.

The tutorials in this book offer a different perspective on how to use Max than the tutorials in Kinetix's own manuals, yet they drive home the same methodologies and procedures. Not only does this reinforce what an experienced user may already know, it helps new users climb the learning curve quickly, making "3D Studio Max 3 Fundamentals" an excellent supplemental book for any new user of the software. --Mike Caputo

From Library Journal
3D Studio MAX is very expensive, powerful software used for film and TV special effects and interactive game design. Those just learning or upgading to 3D Studio MAX 3 should start with Peterson's book, which outlines MAX design concepts and then provides an extended discussion of nurbs, patches, composition, and basic animation techniques. It includes illustrated examples, hands-on exercises, and helpful notes and tips. Designers with more experience will want animator Chismar's manual. He covers filmstrips, logos, motion capture, texture mapping, lens flares, and a variety of real-world case studies.

Filler words and Fluff... This -
By R. Colon
After reading 5 chapters(if you make it that far) this book will teach you very little about 3D Studio Max. Few pictures and hands on explination, too many filler words(this book could've been written in under 60 pages). This book insults even the most novice of computer users. Not to mention, it talks about opinions as facts. It made me so ANGRY, I hope amazon will give me my money back. This is one of the reasons I sometimes hate buying on-line. If I had seen the book first at a store, I would have never ever bought it!
TRUST ME... if this is your first time using MAX you will learn more by just playing with the program for a few minutes.
From 1-10 I would give it a minus 4 for the frustration... SAMS Teach yourself books should do a version... cause most multimedia professionals only have time for the answers.

The point is moot...but this book is wonderful.
By Bill Glenn Jr
I know the point is late in coming since Peterson has moved on to AutoDesk Press and MAX4 is now the proper subject of any review, but there is no way this book deserves the poor reviews it has received from a couple of reviewers here.
There are two books on the market that new users of MAX should consider: 3D Studio MAX 3 Fundamentals by Michael Todd Peterson and 3D Studio MAX 3 In Depth by Rob Polevoi. Of the two, this one is the more basic and gradual. The thing that both of these volumes have in common is that they seek to create an understanding of working in MAX rather than simply describing the programs functions.
It is true that instructions and illustrations are not repeated again and again throughout the book, but I count that as a strength, not a weakness. If you need to remember what the MeshSmooth button looks like, refer to Illustration 1.1!
This book is head and shoulders above 3D Studio MAX 3 Visual Quickstart Guide, and I believe 3D Studio MAX 3 Bible and Mastering 3D Studio MAX 3. Visual Quickstart (and to a lesser extent the other two titles) simply lists the "steps" to perform each function without giving you an understanding how all the parts work together to actually create animations.
For MAX4 users, got to Petersons new book from Autodesk Press or Boardmans book from New Riders. I Haven't seen the new volume of In Depth yet, but it seems to have nearly doubled in press, so I would steer towards these two.

an alright book
By A Customer
I haven't read much computer books in the past, my previous computer related book was "Director 7 & Lingo Authorized" for Macromedia's Director 7 though which the book was very in-depth with detailed instructions. Then I got this book. Before i finish reading director 7 authorized, i started to read this because of the nature of the topic. I have no prior experience in 3D modeling and stuff except for maybe creating levels for Quake games. After going through the first few chapters, i was able to create some decent animation with their instructed exercises, although u might be confused about the cammands in the exersice they throw at you, you will understand them more as you approach near the end of the book. The instructions of the exersices were sometimes unclear and took me awhile to figure them out, and even worse with some numerous misprints and and some misinformation like mixing up with the Y and Z axis in their 3D overview intro. That could really confuse people and misinform the very beginners but not too serious so most people could overcome with. Also, the book throws at lot of terminologies at you so beware, however they have a nice glossary for reference. Overall, it has lots of information for beginners and nice exercises-but not enough. you may want read some sections over again to really understand them - or maybe its just me :)
