Based on a very specific methodology

I bought this book because it addressed a need I have - how to make better charts with the newest version of Excel (2007), and do it in a dynamic manner, i.e. with data that changes.

This is a typical computer book, with many hundreds of pages and an included CD of examples and other things.

One of the other things on the CD is an explanation of the author's "rS1.method" methodology (even the name should be a clue), which is used throughout the book and is used "in all the author's books" as though it were some kind of standard. In it the author prescribes a very set methodology and structure for laying out your multi-worksheet spreadsheets, and all the examples are based on it. If you need some discipline and like methodology, you will like this.

But if you are like me, impatient for results and not willing to be bound by a rigid framework, you will not like it.

The other thing I didn't like was the author's rambling and lecturing style. It was hard to wade through a long discourse on every subject before getting to the meat. One place in the small print it mentions that this book is "somewhat unusual" and is a "translation from the German" so that might explain why this is. I have read other books (history) that are direct translations from other languages (German in particular), and also from the one foreign language that I can read directly I know that the writing style differs by country and can seem quite strange to a reader in a different country. That seems to be the case with this book so it made tough going for me.

Anyway, there is useful material here and the book has helped me some, thus a generous 3 stars, but I wouldn't have bought it if I had known then what I know now.

A good book with well structured content.

This book is good, but quite complicated if you are not an experienced Excel 2007 user. If you want impressive dynamic charts, though, the book is a great resource. Changes on the fly save time and extra work when working with charts.

The book is a bit long and covers complicated processes in Excel 2007 for the average user. The material is extensive and the examples are good. The reading is a bit on the dry side at times, but Excel is not necessarily the most exciting subject for many information workers. However, if you love Excel 2007, this book provides valuable insight into complex features of the application. Various processes for dynamic content are presented in detail and push the reader to go beyond simple tasks and use the true power behind Microsoft's Excel 2007. If you need to create spreadsheets that provide dynamic content through multiple applications, this book is a winner!

As a Microsoft Certified Trainer, I look at books as resources for specific tasks. This book delivers. I would have liked to know that the presentation method is drawn out and has extensive examples. I personally like a quick reference and examples to make sure I "get it right" based on what I read. This book does the job, but it is long and some areas may not be relevant for many Excel users. The book is useful, but plan on spending some time on the material. The content is very useful and the concepts allow the user to pull the full potential out of Excel for advanced dynamic content.

I do recommend this book and think it presents some excellent content, but if you are a beginner with Excel 2007, learn more about the application before going into advanced features presented in this book. With that being said, if you are a good study and grasp content quickly, this is a great book.

I would not give this book 5 stars, but it is far from mediocre and is deserving of a high 4 star rating. I do recommend this book and, as a Microsoft Certified Trainer, think the book presents excellent content that I could use and present in a learning environment!

Great concept, nice layout and ideas, but self-important presentation

I won't be redundant in the restatement of J. Peterson's review. I think he nailed it for the most part in a very tactful way. I just want people to be clear if they haven't read his review:

Pros: The book is really nicely laid out in terms of color and style. Alot of the ideas are very interesting and not things that most people would be able to do on their own, or even conceive. Some of these ideas are great for presentations or trying to keep the pretty stuff in the foreground while your data hides in the back until you need it. The chapters have a wealth of information and you can learn the extremes of Excel charting including some of the more aesthetic things that are hard to teach.

Cons: As Peterson said, the author uses some extremely cumbersome methodology for naming and arranging his workbooks. So much so, that he had to include an extra 26 pages of reading on the cd just to understand this system. The worst part? Its not even a common methodology. Its something he created based on an old methodolgy and I can't even find anything on the net about it. When you read about it, he makes you believe its some kind of standard, but really its only standard to him and some people who read his book. He also makes it sound like its a great device for users of your book to understand the setup, but NO ONE you give your workbook to will know anything about this methodology. Let me be clear that this is a decent methodology, but for 99% of readers, its just too cumbersome if you just present a few big projects a year or want some flashy consulting presentations. The learning of charts should not be dependant on this narrowly used methodology.

Also, as Peterson stated, the author kind of drifts into philosophies and discussions that are superfluous to the subject at hand, including long winded discussions about his opinions on uses of rarely used tools in excel. Its merely his personal philosophies, and though some are good rules of thumb, they should be written elsewhere while the main gists are covered for the 99% who would read this book. It mentions something about translation from German, so maybe that's why some areas are overly written. BUT the ideas had to come from somewhere, the language just doesn't create them!!

Its a good book, but check it out at your local library before you buy it, its just not for everyone.

This is a large book (larger than its predecessor) but it is packed with useful information. It is a worthy addition to the Step By Step series, which has always had a well deserved reputation for delivering exactly what it promises. Anyone who wants to get up to speed quickly with Windows 8.1 should find this to be just what they needed. When upgrading to Windows 8.1 or buying a new device with Windows 8.1, keep this book in front of you.

A great introduction to Windows 8.1

I read the review that said the person was frustrated at not being able to find something in the book. I don't think it is fair to criticize a whole book because one thing wasn't in the index in the way the reader expected.The print edition comes with a free companion ebook that is fully searchable, so all it takes is a download and a look to find any given term. Or if you don't want to do that, use Amazon's "look inside the book" feature to find what you want (I have done that many times).

I found this to be a well written, thoroughly illustrated guide to Windows 8.1. My only (small) criticism of it is that I think at this time most people will be coming to Win8.1 as an upgrade from Win8 rather than looking at it on a brand new computer, and the instructions for upgrading, while extremely useful, were relegated to the back of the book. That's just a personal quibble and doesn't reduce my overall opinion of the book at all.

The authors clearly know what they're talking about, and their approach to Win8.1 makes sense.The differences between Win8 and Win8.1 are carefully explained, and the authors tell it like it is.

All the Step By Step books I've read have lived up to their names, taking the reader from the simple to the complex in easy increments. This book would be incredibly useful for someone facing Win8.1 for the first time (and for Windows 8, there is the previous edition of this book which is equally good).

Easy to understand

When my Dad (82) bought his new laptop he was so confused on the where everything was and why is it different. SO, I got him the Windows 8.1 Step by Step. It has helped him tremendously navigating thru “new” Windows. I don’t get as many daily phone calls, “What am I looking at?” “Where is this?”

He explained this Step by Step book has been easy for him to understand and follow. It has lived up to it’s name and has kept peace in our family. It’s a great introduction for anyone.

Worth the Agony to Read and Understand

I've had this book for some time now. I purchased a laptop back last November with Windows 8 on it. I did not like Win 8 at all, at first. So I cheated and got one of those "looks like Win 7" desktops. But then I did upgrade to Windows 8.1 as soon as it was released and decided I'd learn the operating system because that's (probably) the future. The text helped me a lot. It IS easy to follow. You've just got to be patient. I just finished building my 2014 gaming PC (I've been a PC gamer since the late 80s and build a new one every year) and I bought Windows 8.1 Professional for my operating system. I feel comfortable with 8.1 now and you will too after spending the 80 to 100 hands-on hours on the keyboard and mouse over a period of months to get really comfortable with it, as I did! The Step by Step book is great; the time spent to learn Windows 8.1 isn't, but it's necessary, like taking medicine that you know is good for you, but you don't like the taste. Have fun, heh, heh.

Great quick-lookup resource for vets, but also great read for beginners. Wish it dove into a little more depth and showed more code-fu, but not bad overall. If your an AX dev, it's worth it to pick up the digital copy for a quick reference. Recommend reading if you're trying to get into AX programming.

Tips from Microsoft® SharePoint® Designer 2010 Step by Step

Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2010 has seen major improvements over its previous version, Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007. It is now the preferred tool for site owners and what Gartner termed as ‘citizen developers’. Using the browser and other what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) tools such as, SharePoint Designer 2010, InfoPath 2010 and Visio Premium 2010, citizen developers, that is, those users operating outside the scope of IT can create new business applications for consumptions by others. These non-code solutions are successful because citizen developers know what they want to achieve, they understand their business needs and with a bit of SharePoint knowledge they can wire together the business processes or sets of tasks for their organization. Using the book, SharePoint Designer 2010 Step by Step – site owners and citizen developers can build up their SharePoint 2010 knowledge so that they can build citizen developed solutions, and then reuse those solutions as a basis for future SharePoint sites.

The book is a step by step tutorial; explaining what you are doing and why, and gives you a good understanding of why. It contains images of commands in the margin so you can easily find them on the ribbon and contains many screenshots so you can confirm that you are following the steps correctly. You can also use the book as a reference as it has an extensive index and glossary.

Don’t be put off by its name; this book is not aimed at just web designers - with SharePoint Designer, you can carry out similar tasks to the browser; however, you can now complete more tasks natively, without the need to jump back and forth between SharePoint Designer and the browser. For example, when you first open a site with SharePoint Designer you are presented within the SharePoint Designer workspace with a site’s summary page. This page provides you with the basic information about the site and allows you to change many site settings, manage permissions and create new subsites. You will also notice from the screenshot below, that SharePoint Designer has a redesigned user interface (UI) that uses Microsoft Office Fluent UI.

Tip: Once you open a SharePoint 2010 site in SharePoint Designer, you can open individual files, that are not stored within the site.

Another reason why you it is easier to complete similar tasks with SharePoint Designer than using the web browser to is the Navigation pane. This replaces the Folder List task pane in SharePoint Designer 2007 and focuses on SharePoint objects and not where the objects are stored. You can then pin each of these object types to show their contents in a mini-gallery, whilst you complete another task in the workspace.

Although SharePoint Designer is a wonderful tool, it is not a tool that everyone should use, for example, if you only have contributor rights on a site you will not be able to use SharePoint Designer. In addition to SharePoint Designer’s in-built usage restrictions, IT and site collection owners can limit its usage at either the Web application or site collection level. Therefore you may see different SharePoint objects in the Navigation pane as compared to another user or depending on the site collection where the site is located.

Tip: Using the Log In As icon in the SharePoint Designer status bar, you can log in as another user without closing and restarting the program.

When you create the top level site in a site collection based on the team site template, then by default - users who are members of the Site Owners and Designers site groups can use SharePoint Designer. However they cannot customize site definition pages, nor can they see the hidden URL structure of a SharePoint site – the hierarchical tree view displayed when you click All File in the Navigation pane, that shows where files are physical or virtually located in a site. When you create a site collection using the Publishing Portal site template, then site owners and designers have no such limitations. This does make sense. On publishing site collections, you will probably want to delegate the control of content to individuals on a site by site basis. These individuals may need to create their own page layouts and change the branding of their sites. On team sites, you may wish to keep the same look and feel throughout the site collection and prevent all but site collection owners from customizing site definition pages.

Tip: Whenever you create a new site collection, check that the SharePoint Designer settings meet your business needs.

Microsoft has also addressed the issue that when you saved a site definition page with SharePoint Designer 2007, it would always store a copy of the page in the content database – known as customizing or un-ghosting the page, even when this was not necessary. Now with SharePoint Designer 2010, Microsoft has implemented a "safe by default" approach. When you edit a page you will only be able to amend the code within Web Part zones or within the Wiki page content area. If IT or the site collection owner has allowed you, you can edit the page outside those areas by placing the page in advance edit mode. This will result in customizing or un-ghosting the page – so customizing a page has not gone away, but you don’t always have to do it when editing a page with SharePoint Designer.

A safety net for the high wire act of editing sharepoint sites.

As a system administrator of old who hates to touch code, but would if I had to in order to make life easier, I learned to love SharePoint back in the old Portal Server days. But not being a developer there was always a gap and it seemed I would break something important when I tried to tweak some code or a form in SharePoint Designer.

Because of that, I have always stayed away unless needed, until now. With a copy of Step-by-Step SharePoint Designer 2010 on my desk, I have the safety net right there. With the bonus online copy at no cost, I am even able to log in from work and know the information I need is only a search away.

Step-by-Step SharePoint Designer 2010 is very well laid out and has the right balance of information and screenshots to keep you out of trouble yet enough goods for the developer who knows what they are doing.

I highly recommend this book for the power user wanting to push the envelope to the system administrator who was told to 'get it up and running'. It is worth every penny.

It was such a nice experience of having a copy of "Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2010: Step by Step", I really enjoyed reading it, usually it was hard to follow the example on the book step by step, but after I log-on to the Safari and read the book on-line and opened the SharePoint Designer on my dual monitor side by side I found it was amazing and I learned things so much faster than I used to. I just felt there is no need to have training in the classroom as long as I have one of your "Step by Step ..." books handy.

Also at the end of each chapter I found the "Key Points" were very helpful, after I finished reading each chapter I did not have to search things that were not very clear to me, and "Key Points" section was also helpful reviewing and memorizing all details.

After this first "Step by Step" book I had ever had I would check out all other series to catch up the new tech and to improve my technical skill from now on and thank you very much.

Very good for learning as well as a reference

I've always been a fan of most of the Step By Step books issued by Microsoft and this book is no exception. It actually gives you more than you expect, including a small, abbreviated section on where to download SharePoint Foundation and how to install it.

There are a host of new features in SharePoint Designer 2010 and this book handles most of what the average person who will be using it needs and more content on what the more advanced user will need, including Business Connectivity Services (the new replacement for Business Data Connectivity in the 2007 version).

Not only is this (as the title mentions) a Step-by-Step tutorial, but there are plenty of screen shots to help guide you through the processes, so you'll know exactly what you are supposed to be seeing along the way.

I was quite happy with the in-depth handling of Workflows (starting with an `Understanding section), along with an entire chapter regarding Branding, and another regarding Master Pages. After coming from the ASP.Net development world, I kind of take Master Pages for granted, normally, but this book makes sure that the reader knows about Master Pages from the ground up, providing an entire chapter on the subject.
But the book doesn't stop there. There is an entire section on Administrative tasks, along with another on Managing Web Content in the SharePoint Server environment.

All in all, this book takes you from the basics of exploring SPD and how it is laid out, to working with SharePoint sites in the designer , Lists and Libraries in SharePoint all the way through to the more advanced subjects mentioned earlier. This is not only a good book for learning SharePoint Designer 2010, but I'm going to keep it in my library as a reference.

    Excellent First Edition

    For a first edition, this RSK shows great promise. Too much information for those who wish to only be power users of the OS, but for anyone who needs to master and administer Windows 7, you can't go wrong with this behemoth. You would be hard pressed to not find an answer to general question or administrative need therein.

    Continuing the trend set forth in prior Windows RSKs, this RSK introduces a lot of topics, but requires you to purchase additional books or read additional (and most of the time lengthy) TechNet material to fully make use of the technology or to completely understand what information they did present. A good example of this is PowerShell. The RSK and CD make heavy use of PowerShell scripts to automate tasks, but you do need to follow their How-To link if you actually want to learn the language. Another good example is the section on automated deployment. Although an excellent overview, most of the information you will need to completely perform the task you must get from one of the 7 links they provide you for resource materials.

    I have also been somewhat surprised at the amount of information which is just missing, items that any administrator opting to customize the environment might need. As an example, if you're looking to deploy Win7 using the WIM on the install DVD instead of capturing your own, you will probably want to configure the Default User profile - a topic you will find minimal information on beyond folder locations and establishing mandatory profiles. Something as simple as how to configure the default background image is nowhere to be found. There are also no references to OEM configurations, such as changing the stock background image displayed when at the logon screen. Countless web sites publicize the information, but not the RSK.

    Yes, this RSK is well written and an invaluable addition to your administrative library, but it won't be the last book on Windows 7 you buy/read.

    No index in the Kindle edition...

    The book follows in the Windows Resource Kit series, now well-established for the Windows operating systems.

    One significant fault for the Kindle Edition, which I read in my iPad Kindle app, is that there is no index. To be of fully useful, such an index should be hyperlinked to the pages the index refers to. Without such an index of some sort, this book is very hard to use since searching such a large book takes forever on portable systems like the iPad or iPod Touch (or iPhone).

    The least impractical way I have to find something in this ebook is to use Amazon's "Look Inside" web-based feature, scroll down to the index, and try to get some idea of where it is in the ebook. Since many ebooks, including this one, do not show print edition page numbers, this tactic is of limited utility. I understand that many future Kindle e-books will include print edition page numbers as well as location numbers.

    The Table of Contents is hyperlinked, so that touching the TOC link takes you to the chapter, but this often doesn't help that much when you're searching for something very specific.

    I may try to get my money back for the Kindle edition and buy the paper edition instead...but I would really prefer a fully featured Kindle Edition! At least the paper edition would have an index!!

    Windows 7 Encyclopedia!

    This book is like an encyclopedia for Windows 7. I got this book, the administrators pocket consultant and the MCTS Windows 7 exam book to ramp up on Windows 7 which we will be introducing at work in the next few months. What I liked about this book is that it had material that was not easy to find on TechNet. This is a good book to keep at the office because of its size and depth. The deployment chapters and the chapter on direct access are both very useful.

Sold book, but nothing new

In their book Effective Time Management - Using Microsoft Outlook to Organize Your Work and Personal Life, the authors Lothar Seiwert and Holger Woeltje provide a practical guide to using Outlook (as well as OneNote) to create a time-management system. Simply said, they teach you how to become more structured and organised when using Outlook to manage email, tasks, and appointments.

What I really like about this book is that it covers Office 2003, Office 2007, and Office 2010! While Office 2010 is already around for some time, a lot of companies and people still use Office 2007 and even Office 2003. So, even if you have one of the older versions, don't worry, this book gives you detailed instructions on how to do things, such as setting up views in all 3 versions of Outlook.

As for the content, I have to say that I didn't benefit much from it, as I already used most of the advise contained in this book. However, if so far you're using only 'standard' Outlook, meaning you don't let Outlook filter emails for you, you don't create different views for your tasks to get a better overview of what is the most important thing to do, or you don't categorise your appointments to get a better overview of your week, this may be just the right book for you. You will get to learn how to approach each of the facets of Outlook (email, tasks, appointments) and get the most out of them to become more productive, both with techniques ("choose the most important thing that you would do if you could choose only one from your tasks, assign it #1. Then, continue with the others") and 'implementation info' (for example how to customise views so that you get a better overview of your tasks).

Overall, it's a very solid book with useful advise, but nothing really new for people who already looked at time-management methods and use them.

Change Everything You Do

Despite the book on time management with Outlook® being under 300 pages, reviewing took quite awhile. I mention that because that is likely what many readers will find. I kept returning to implement.

Effective Time Management: Using Microsoft® Outlook® to Organize Your Work and Personal Life is just what it says. However, it could use an additional subtitle about changing everything about how you handle your desk and computer.

To receive the book's substantial value, you cannot just take a tip here and another there. You have to change the way you receive, read and send email, how you plan, attend or conduct meetings, and master the to-do and journal functions many Outlook owners do not know of or use. Time-management guru Lothar Seiwert and productivity expert Holger Woeltje show specifically how to do all of that. They lay out the problems, describe the concepts for those and their solutions, provide real-world examples of best practices, and give step-by-step description of how to do it yourself.

People who feel harried and overwhelmed by information and tasks coming at all times from all directions can get tremendous help here. All it takes is looking at each aspect of the business day in a new framework and then implementing better systems to deal with them. It is not at all simple, but the authors put it all right there in front of you.

By the bye, as a technical writer, I also appreciated their index. That often contracted-out weakest aspect of technical books is actually useful in this one. For example, it uses concepts instead of just the precise words Microsoft and the authors use.

The authors do not stint on any area. They separate these into email, tasks, weekly planning, daily planning, meetings and goals. Well worth it

This book deals with the reality of application. I love the specific examples and the You-Try-It section. (In my experience as an Outlook/OneNote educator, the biggest issue isnt the software, it's helping users implement it.) This book also has a tidy, well organized presentation style. It's friendly, comprehensive, appealing and respectful. I would love to see the authors tackle a book about online collaboration using OneNote Outlook and Sharepoint/Wordpress. I'm adding MindJet to that mix as well. How about it guys?

Strong fundamentals and fun stuff too

This book is an excellent overview of WPF 3D.

Petzold blends his development experience with his math background to explain everything quite thoroughly, from the details of the API to the hows and whys of the math underneath.

* He explains why WPF 3D shades triangles differently depending on whether they share their vertices or not.

* His explanation of quaternions is probably the best I have read.

* He talks about why Viewport3DVisual is better than Viewport3D for printing.

* He explains the math behind lighting calculations.

The book contains lots of pictures, lots of sample code and a library of useful classes for WPF 3D programming.

If you're doing anything with WPF 3D, you simply must have this book.

An excellent and practical introduction to WPF 3D

First, maybe it's worth mentioning that unlike most other books on 3D out there, it concentrates solely on WPF 3D, right from the beginning, and it assumes you have enough knowledge of C# .net/WPF. It doesn't "waste" half of the book trying to teach you C#/Visual Studio/XAML etc... it's a very good attitude. If you need to learn WPF/C#, read another book first. Charles Petzold has a great book on WPF, for example.

And to the book - It teaches most fundamental elements of 3D and how it's done in WPF. Meshes, models, camera, lights, textures, transforms and some basic 3D math are all there. There's also a chapter about quaternions.
Most of the material is well written, and good examples are given throughout the book, just where needed, and all well explained. The examples compile without any problem in Visual Studio 2005/2008 (the Express editions are enough btw).
All the examples are in C#.

Most of the material tends to be pretty practical and useful for real-world application. And that's particularly true to the last chapter, which try to inspire you with real world usage of WPD 3D and examples.

Just note that most of the material isn't very advanced. You'll have to learn more by yourself to write really useful 3D applications. But the book is just what it should be - gives you a very good jump start and leaves the rest for you to explore.

I highly recommend this book for anyone with knowledge of WPF who'd like to jump to the WPF 3D wagon.
Many WPF books dedicate a chapter or 2 about 3D. Even if you read one - this book have much more material and practical info about WPF 3D than those, so I highly recommend in this case as well.
Also, people with knowledge of other more advanced 3D platforms (DirecX/OpenGL) who'd like to know WPF 3D will also find this book useful.

Really good, but so light on animation

I really want to give this book a 4 or 5 star rating. Petzold goes into amazing detail about almost all aspects of creating 3D images. You really cant go wrong with this book if all you are doing is building static images.

But the books coverage of animation is sadly light. Even though there is a whole chapter on animations, its really light coverage and leaves me wanting for so much more.

And the real problem with this book is, who creates static 3D images? You most likely do 3D AND animation together.

So if you need the guts details on 3D WPF rendering than this book is for you. I you need guts on animation, not so much. And if you need 3D rendering and animation, than you might as well get this book, but know that you'll need to look elsewhere for animation details.
