Decent enough, but not exceptional
By Amazon Customer
When I bought this book, I had hoped for a structured tutorial on the .NET Task Parallel Library and PLINQ. I had hoped it would start with simple Task objects and work its way up to more complex development issues. Instead, the book starts out with a discussion of processor core efficiencies and patterns for decomposing jobs into tasks. Those topics would work function better as appendices to the main text, which should focus on the .NET libraries and how to use them.

The second chapter spends more time talking about sort algorithms than the TPL. That was pretty much the point at which I put this book down and started looking for something else. I wouldn't recommend this book as a learning resource for the TPL or PLINQ, although it might be useful as a review for those already familiar with the libraries.

Not for beginners
By E. Smith
I have been programming for over 10 years, but my Windows specific C++ programming is relatively weak due to inexperience with it. Note that if you are in the same boat, you will need additional resources (web based, help files, other books) on top of this book as this book assumes you are already proficient in creating Windows apps.
They make no attempt to tell you otherwise, it is an expert level book - but even if you already know C++ well, there is much Windows specific details that this assumes you know.

Great book and very useful, just not entry level, so know that going in.

This is da book
By S. Jacobs
If you want to do any serious development in Window, this is the book to get. Once you read and understand the basic C++ books, and want to get beyond simple applications, you need this book. This is not a beginner text, but a grown-up book on what is happening inside windows and how to use it in your application. I found this book invaluable in building multithreading, port i/o, virtual array management in my application. The author really knows his stuff and presents it in a very readable fashion. The source code for the examples in this book are well-commented and I have found it easy to take code fragments from then to use in my applications.

This book is a keeper.

Had all of the info I was looking for...
By D. Devine
As you guessed by the title, this book covered exactly what I was looking for. C/C++ programmers who are dealing with Windows kernel objects, shared memory objects, events, semaphores, security and the like will appreciate this.

The book covered and clarified information that may/may-not be available on MSDN (I never saw it there while searching...), and did so with an overall approach that ties the topics together, shows how they are used, and generally is more understandable. I appreciated this book much more than jumping around through a bunch of disjointed MSDN pages trying to understand how these elements work. The book gives you deep understanding and more than a few tricks you can use in the debugger.

Beginning developers, or developers working on managed code prob. wouldn't have much use for this book. Consider this the nitty-gritty reference manual for how all of the low level stuff gets done.

I appreciate this book, it won't end up back at the used bookstore.

A very good attempt to cover everything about Windows Server 2012
By Giuseppe Simpatia
Unlike other books on Windows servers, this one doesn't focuses on any particular Microsoft exam. His 1500+ pages and 32 chapters can count on a well-organized structure based on five main topics:
1) Windows Servers 2012 Overview
2) Managing Windows Server 2012 Systems
3) Managing Windows Server 2012 Storage and File System
4) Managing Windows Server 2012 Networking and Domain Services
5) Managing Active Directory and Security
If someone would request you to configure a newly installed Windows Server 2012 in a lonely island, without any support of Internet, mobile phones, colleagues, etc., you could definitely rely on this book like a valid resource to accomplish successfully any type of operation on your machine!
Throughout his 32 chapters this book deals with every topic deeply, from the very basic aspects to the more complex ones.
For example, talking about the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) no secondary aspect has been omitted: you can learn how to set group policy control authoring and snap-in availability or how to use 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the MMC, and even what must to be taken into consideration when saving a customized MMC.
In my opinion, such analytic approach make this book a complete study guide for exam preparations or a perfect step-by-step procedure for every day, but at the same time it is not exactly a relaxing bed-reading...
I don't want to be confusing, this book is absolutely not hard to be understood but it's better to face it with your five senses in full working order, better if sitting in front of a Windows Server console.
Weak point: it would have been useful to have more references to the PowerShell.
Strength: a powerful guide.

Very in-depth albeit lacking an eBook
By John Smith
I've read a lot of books by William Stanek on Windows Server and Exchange Server so I was already familiar with the author. Having read a lot of technical books, I knew this book was going to be thick and heavy but I still didn't fully imagine this book to be this huge. It weighs more than 5.2 lbs so this is not something you'd want to put in your backpack for reference on the road.

This is a great reference book on Windows Server 2012. It not only covers new features that were introduced with Windows Server 2012 but also covers a wide range of topics, from file system to networking and even Active Directory.

If you want to buy one book for Windows Server 2012 that covers nearly everything, this should be it. Please note that this is not merely an introduction to Windows Server but a very in-depth look inside the latest offering from Microsoft. The book assumes some experience with the Windows Server platform - not necessary with version 2012 but any prior (but recent) versions of the Windows Server (e.g. 2003/2008).

When I'm looking at purchasing a book such as this one, before I make my final decision, I make sure that an eBook is offered free of charge with the purchase of the physical book. I like reading technical books in physical form because sometimes graphs, tables and programming code don't layout nicely on the Kindle. But I'm also spoiled by the luxury of having access to the electronics editions of the physical books that I'm reading - especially those that are this thick and heavy. Another reason I like having access to eBooks on technical topics is so I can quickly search for very specific texts - it's much quicker and more complete than index at the end of a physical book.

Many publishers include access to eBook editions of their printed books for free with the purchase of the physical book. Microsoft Press used to include a CD with its books that included an electronic book as a PDF file. I was disappointed to find out that there is no eBook offered with this book. There is a Kindle eBook available but if you want to have both (physical and electronic), you have to pay twice - the Kindle edition costs almost as much as the physical book. This is the only reason I'm taking out one star.

Overall, I highly recommend this book but before you purchase, make sure to decide if you'd rather read this on your Kindle.

This is a huge book - 1539 pages
By Amazon Customer
I have read other books by Stanek and they've been quite good. I did not read the entire 1500+ page book that I am reviewing now. Why? Well, it is 1500 pages and a technical book. Further, I am a technical writer for Microsoft and I know most of what is in this book already. However, I am not personal friends with the author, so I don't consider this review biased in favor of the author. I like his work. In this book, he attempts to cover everything. He does not take on just "What is new" - he attempts to cover the whole product. That is not an easy job, but he does it admirably. Is everything here? No. I can only imagine that this would be more of an encyclopedia set if everything was here. I think the thing that I have to offer is covered well, what is maybe overkill, and what could be covered better:

1. What is covered well?
+ Boot configuration and troubleshooting (very, very good stuff!)
+ Troubleshooting hardware / devices and device drivers
+ Basic Active Directory Design
+ Registry
+ Performance (big section and some beyond what I would do, but I cannot call it overkill)
+ RAID is covered well enough because most people use hardware RAID (there is not a ton of that in here)

2. What is maybe overkill?
= Taskpads (they are fairly unreliable and unpopular, in my experience)
= Disk and File systems (hard to judge, but there sure is a lot on this topic)

3.What is maybe missing? Okay, it is 1530 pages, so asking for more seems ridiculous. I am not asking for more! I am just telling you what else you might want to learn about Windows Server 2012 that I don't see much of in this book:
- PowerShell for everything (some PowerShell commands are in here, but that is not a specialty of this book)
- Hyper-V (not much)
- Dynamic Access Control (there is a little mention, but that uses claims-based access controls)
- Active Directory (more advanced administration concepts)
- Virtualization improvements for domain controllers (there is cloning DCs, but not a big discussion on improvements in virtualized domain controllers)
- IPv4 and IPv6 (it is covered enough for most, but there are entire books on these concepts

What else? Topics I don't know a lot about, but I expect to read more about:
+ Trusted Platform Module (TPM) - I use it, but there seems to be details in here I haven't seen. Looks good!
+ ReFS (Resilient File System) - I am interested to learn more
+ Data deduplication

Overall, this is a good book for people who are really trying to get up to speed with the technology and don't necessarily have a lot of background. The book doesn't expect that you are already a fully knowledgeable system admin. Although this book is huge, it won't teach you everything you need to know to be fully competent either. However, it is a really good start!

Stay away from this book!
By Mr. Coder
This book is riddled with validation errors. Go ahead and download the source code for this book and run it through the W3C validator. Almost all the examples fail validation. See page 77 for a classic example of bad code. The author nests list items inside anchor tags. How a book like this can make it to press is beyond me. These are not just typos I am talking about, this author is a bad coder!

Good novice intro
By John Brady
HTML5 Step by StepHTML5 Step by Step is a good introduction to HTML for the complete novice. "Step by Step" is literally the approach taken in the book, with explicit instructions for each action to be taken. I would not hesitate to recommend this as a first text for the business or hobby user; experienced HTML authors or developers looking for cutting-edge HTML5 features should look elsewhere.

The book uses a Microsoft landscape, so the editing tool of choice is Notepad, and the browser absorbing the most attention is Internet Explorer 9. Users of other operating systems can use the text, but they'll need to be savvy enough to translate the Microsoft terminology to their own platform ( which might be beyond the abilities of a true beginner ). Following the example code using Ubuntu and vi, I did not experience any significant problems.

HTML authoring tools are not covered in order to focus on the underlying HTML building blocks.

Since the instructions provided for the accompanying exercises are so explicit, they consume a great deal of print real estate. That does not leave much room for advanced features of HTML5, and you won't find those here. Hence, once you complete the exercises, this isn't a book you'll retain for reference.

Disclaimer, I was provided access to an electronic copy of this book by O'Reilly Publishing for review purposes.

Just Plain Wrong
By Nick Armstrong
I purchased this book as a resource to teach students about the new HTML5 semantic tags.

For the record, I'm a 15-year web design and development veteran with high levels of experience in HTML5/CSS3/PHP/Perl/WordPress, etc. I've started teaching over the last 4 years and many corporations are now upgrading to IE8 and IE9, which means that HTML5 tags are finally at their fingertips. I was hoping Microsoft would be able to provide a solid book from that standpoint, but this book definitely fails at that.

The majority of what you learn is, at best, HTML4 (and not even standards-based XHTML), with some HTML5 sprinkled in at random.

As I got further into the book, quite a few problems appeared:
- consistant use and advocation for the use of the I and B tags -- when they're said to be a LAST RESORT in the HTML5 specification as EM and STRONG have better semantic meaning
- examples to build and advocating for TABLE BASED LAYOUTS (a huge no-no)
- using images for links in a main navigation - no mention of Search Engine Optimization or practices therein - or the consequences of using image-based menus
- next to no mention of CSS2 or CSS3 tags that save time (for example, coloring every-other row in a table-based layout - you can use nth-child(2n) -- this is never mentioned)
- there's no explanation of where to use section vs article vs aside (and it's certainly not shown in the example besides a "do this and don't ask why"-type example)
- no mention of TH, THEAD, TBODY, TFOOT, or CAPTION tags, summary attribute, border-collapse style, or COLGROUPs in the Tables chapter...
- no required alt tags for many images
- using the a-tag anchors as opposed to showing ID-based anchor capabilities
- advocating for in-line (tag) styling and attribute-based modification vs the much cleaner and standardized CSS-based styling/modifications
- specifying fonts makes no mention of the @font-face command or possibilities therein or Google's webfont capabilities (ok as this one may not have existed in February 2011 - but @font-face DID and worked even in IE6)

And their advice as to what "many professional web developers" do - ("Many professional Web site designers do not create their own buttons, nor do they acquire them from others; instead they use button-creation programs to generate them" - location 4395, and several other bits - like "Many web developers still use tables for layout") - is just plain wrong.

Skip this book.

Pick up a different guide (I highly recommend the Head First series, but if you're not into JavaScript programming - the Head First HTML5 Programming: Building Web Apps with JavaScript may be too advanced for you -- and certainly does not do a good job covering the new HTML5 semantic markup, but Head First HTML and CSS - second edition with HTML5 tags - is great for this purpose and is lighter on the JavaScript!)

The content was good but gets worse. Misprints a plenty so fire the editors and Orin needs to up his sleep before writing
By James G
The content caps off the first 2 books well as I have been learning some new information but must remark on how amateurish it has been for a Orin and his editors to have a lesson summary in Ch3 Lesson 1 saying to enable recursion to stop a DoS when you want to DISABLE recursion as earlier in chapter mentions. Then in that same Ch 3 lesson 1 on advanced DNS, the questions line up to answers about DHCP being lesson 1 on page 200! DHCP is really lesson 2.. It get's better for CH 3.. Lesson 2 and 3 answers are IPAM. Opps. This was the highlight of misprints so far and I am only on Ch 3. It takes his Administering 2012R2 book's misprints/typos found through the last few chapters and ups it a full notch so rely on his writing only for any new knowledge you can get, not to validate your knowledge with his multiple choice questions/answers. Also be on the look out for misprints in the summaries, it's there to see if you really know your stuff.. I would be upset paying more for a hardcopy having such misprints and will be getting a kick out of the upcoming chapters if the misprints get worse than what I have previously seen.

**Update once I reached Ch 8. I honestly hate reading this book by Orin. The misprints and lack of clarity written as each chapter progresses now leave me confused where I must click his referenced TechNet links just to understand what he should have been talking about. TechNet reads beautifully whereas Orin writes lick a drunkard with run-on sentences, contradictions and lack of critical details conveyed. For example, Hyper-V Shared Nothing.. Key point he failed to mention is that you must be on same AD domain. Hyper-V Replica Brokers, page 525. is another example of how poorly written this was. "Hyper -V Replica is not necessary if Hyper-V Replica is being performed between Hyper-V hosts that are not participating in a failover cluster."

not very detailed
By Nathan
Not a very detailed book. Very short on description of the topics. Lots of lab work which helps studying for the exam but the description of the labs also lacks detail and clear objectives. Would have been nice if the labs came on a DVD but instead you have to setup everything yourself. Also a PDF version of the book would have been nice.

Excellent full-color pictures and a sound learning approach
By William J. Smith
"Plain & Simple OneNote 2013" arrived in a soft mail package, in good condition, and in a timely fashion.

My only objection is a clear lack of substantive detail to whet my appetite and curiosity for an explanation of why I should be doing something. Yes, I realize that it's supposed to be 'plain and simple', but I need a 30,000 foot view of the landscape before I land upon it. In other words, I need an overall sense of what is to be accomplished by a learning activity, which I feel is lacking. With this consideration in mind, the author's teaching style is more of a "bottom up" approach to learning OneNote.

I've seen Lynda.com's video on One Note, and feel it's more complete, modular, and robust. In contrast to most other OneNote publications I've reviewed, this document incorporates sound pedagogy for learning the subject matter. I found the text to be crisp, concisely written, and to the point. I recommend it to the OneNote neophyte. Colorful screen captures make it an apt tool for a quick survey of the subject matter. If you truly need to have your hands held while exploring OneNote, this is your guide.

Complete Guide
By Bryan Smith
This book is well written with easy to follow, illustrated instructions. It's a great introductory guide to One Note, but also provides easy to use instructions for complex functions available in the newest version of the program. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is new to One Note.

Best book for OneNote
By william
Best book published for OneNote. After you buy "One Note for Dummies" you will appreciate it even more. The outstanding feature of this book is that each feature or procedural operation is explained with numerical steps and has an graphic illustration of what to do by the numbers in the steps. Truly, just look at the pictures and follow the numbers. Hope Microsoft publishes more topics using this format.

great for people new to Windows 8.1
By aputerlady
I think this series of books is great for experienced as well as novice users. I use it to teach this operating system and the great screen shots and easy explanations go a long way to smooth the transition from earlier versions of Windows. This is NOT a technical manual but it's great for exploring Windows 8.1 while in front of the computer or just reading. I also like how nicely the book lays flat without breaking the binding. Windows 8 and 8.1 have enough differences that it's important to get the correct version for your operating system and this book was updated nicely from the prior Windows 8 book.

Not as Plain and Simple as Title States
By Gary
Was very disappointed in this guide to Windows 8.1. It did not give detailed enough directions and just assumed you knew how to burn cd's and use the photo apps for importing pics and then transferring to a disc. I am goiung from a VISTA operating system and did not see programs that I am used to using for these activities. It should explain all the new programs and features. Also I do not have a smart phone so needed detailed instructions on how to use this new touch system. I am sorry I purchased this book. It was an expensive waste of money. Am very disappointed.,

Boy, is this bad!
By Seattle Reader
It is sad that I must give this book a very negative review because it covers a subject that isn't much covered by other books. I wanted to like it, but I cannot. Moreover, there is reason to believe that other Amazon users that left reviews praising the book did not actually read the book. See below.

Essentially ALL of the code samples in the book are riddled with errors. Don't believe me? Check out the errata page for the book: [...]

You'll find dozens of errors, most of them very serious, such as missing steps in step-by-step instructions and code that won't compile. As of 11/26/2011, all the errors listed were found by the same person who appears to have given up on the book after page 168 and its hard to blame him/her.

Incredibly, there is one 5-page passage, from pp 136-140, in which there are over a dozen errors in code, including MANY missing steps.

What this means is that no one, and that includes the people praising this book in other reviews, could have actually carried out the example projects. Why then the praise? At the risk of being cynical, I'll point out that I recognize the names of most of the other reviewers. They, like the author, are part of the SharePoint developer circuit of speakers that appear at various conferences. In other words, they are people the author knows and may well be friends of, and they are certainly people who need to curry favor with Microsoft employees (which the author is) who are connected to SharePoint development. Apologies if that's too cynical; but really, how else do you explain why they would praise a book whose samples are so riddled with sloppy errors and could not possibly have been tested by anyone?

I should add that Microsoft Press also deserves censure for publishing a book which they obviously did not test or tech review properly.

How do the Cloud and SharePoint fit together?
By Matthew
You have SharePoint in your enterprise, you are trying to figure out how to take advantage of Azure for the availability and scalability. How do all the pieces fit together? How do you choose what goes where? Steve Fox does a great job not only explaining the landscape, so you can figure out where you fit, but also walks through the options available for the architectural decisions you have to make to design and build your applications.

The integration options for SharePoint can be challenging to learn for the uninitiated. Steve does a great job explaining the process of connecting SharePoint to SQL Azure Data with an External Content Type. The beauty is the use of SharePoint (out of the box) with external content. The end user is none the wiser, they just find that is "works".

The approach taken for each exercises are based on business need, not driven by "cool technology". The security section demonstrates techniques for ensuring that, wherever your data, the connections and information remain secure. From Web Part to Web Service, the examples are educational and relevant. If you are looking to develop for the cloud and you are working with SharePoint, this book is a great jumping off point to get you going in the right direction.

Terrific book from a proven leader in this space
By Nate Baum
This is a fantastic book for anyone considering integrating SharePoint with Azure, and I'd highly recommend it. Steve Fox, an industry thought leader who has focused on integrating cutting-edge technologies in the past, has done it again. The book gives great overviews of the various capabilities of both Azure and SharePoint and then dives deep, focusing on the a variety of approaches in getting these two platforms to work well together. Steve covers not just the 'what' and 'how', but also explains why you might build a solution that integrates Azure and SP for a scenario and why you should consider one approach in building a solution over another.

The book goes step-by-step through several interesting code and no-code solutions with a good level of detail and a lot of screenshots. There are a number of different moving parts and Steve does a good job of explaining it all and bringing it together for a complete solution. I also really appreciate that an entire chapter is dedicated to security, which I consider an incredibly important aspect of any solution integrating Azure and SharePoint.

Reporting Services in simple terms
By Eldred Rivera
Stacia covered both native and SharePoint installation for Reporting Services. This is very helpful for SharePoint sites without a SharePoint administrator or database administrator. She progresses by showing report deployments in both native and SharePoint mode.

The release of Report Builder 2.0 is a significant improvement in Reporting Services. Stacia covers in detail how to install and use it as an authoring tool. In Part II, the full potential of report designer is shown in detail. Choosing between using report builder against report designer will be an easy decision.

Analysis services is an underutilized component of SQL Server. By showing how a reporting services takes advantage of analysis services, it will encourage you to explore analysis services further. Charts, charts and more charts, easy, fast and very useful.

The book discusses report models, managing report server, managing security, a must read for administrators.

Accessible for beginners, but also enough detail for pros
By T. Huguelet
I've used and recommended this book in my teaching and consulting since it came out. In my opinion Stacia strikes the perfect balance between conceptual and technical discussion, without losing new SSRS developers, or boring people with some exposure to SSRS.

One thing to keep in mind is that this book was written for SQL 2008, and many organizations are using SQL 2008 R2. It's still an excellent introduction and the core techniques are still 100% applicable. This book does not cover Report Builder 3.0 or some of the new visualizations that became available when SQL 2008 R2 was released. (Because they didn't exist when the book was written).

If you're looking for an accessible entry to SSRS Report development, but also want something that has enough "meat" to continue to be used as a reference after the fact, this is the book.

Very Good but...
By A. Bryant
The book is very well organized and the lessons are detailed, beyond just the basics. It should serve as a good reference as I start to develop reports on my own. The one drawback is that the sample databases which should be downloaded from CodePlex do not exist. These would have been very beneficial.
