A very good attempt to cover everything about Windows Server 2012
By Giuseppe Simpatia
Unlike other books on Windows servers, this one doesn't focuses on any particular Microsoft exam. His 1500+ pages and 32 chapters can count on a well-organized structure based on five main topics:
1) Windows Servers 2012 Overview
2) Managing Windows Server 2012 Systems
3) Managing Windows Server 2012 Storage and File System
4) Managing Windows Server 2012 Networking and Domain Services
5) Managing Active Directory and Security
If someone would request you to configure a newly installed Windows Server 2012 in a lonely island, without any support of Internet, mobile phones, colleagues, etc., you could definitely rely on this book like a valid resource to accomplish successfully any type of operation on your machine!
Throughout his 32 chapters this book deals with every topic deeply, from the very basic aspects to the more complex ones.
For example, talking about the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) no secondary aspect has been omitted: you can learn how to set group policy control authoring and snap-in availability or how to use 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the MMC, and even what must to be taken into consideration when saving a customized MMC.
In my opinion, such analytic approach make this book a complete study guide for exam preparations or a perfect step-by-step procedure for every day, but at the same time it is not exactly a relaxing bed-reading...
I don't want to be confusing, this book is absolutely not hard to be understood but it's better to face it with your five senses in full working order, better if sitting in front of a Windows Server console.
Weak point: it would have been useful to have more references to the PowerShell.
Strength: a powerful guide.

Very in-depth albeit lacking an eBook
By John Smith
I've read a lot of books by William Stanek on Windows Server and Exchange Server so I was already familiar with the author. Having read a lot of technical books, I knew this book was going to be thick and heavy but I still didn't fully imagine this book to be this huge. It weighs more than 5.2 lbs so this is not something you'd want to put in your backpack for reference on the road.

This is a great reference book on Windows Server 2012. It not only covers new features that were introduced with Windows Server 2012 but also covers a wide range of topics, from file system to networking and even Active Directory.

If you want to buy one book for Windows Server 2012 that covers nearly everything, this should be it. Please note that this is not merely an introduction to Windows Server but a very in-depth look inside the latest offering from Microsoft. The book assumes some experience with the Windows Server platform - not necessary with version 2012 but any prior (but recent) versions of the Windows Server (e.g. 2003/2008).

When I'm looking at purchasing a book such as this one, before I make my final decision, I make sure that an eBook is offered free of charge with the purchase of the physical book. I like reading technical books in physical form because sometimes graphs, tables and programming code don't layout nicely on the Kindle. But I'm also spoiled by the luxury of having access to the electronics editions of the physical books that I'm reading - especially those that are this thick and heavy. Another reason I like having access to eBooks on technical topics is so I can quickly search for very specific texts - it's much quicker and more complete than index at the end of a physical book.

Many publishers include access to eBook editions of their printed books for free with the purchase of the physical book. Microsoft Press used to include a CD with its books that included an electronic book as a PDF file. I was disappointed to find out that there is no eBook offered with this book. There is a Kindle eBook available but if you want to have both (physical and electronic), you have to pay twice - the Kindle edition costs almost as much as the physical book. This is the only reason I'm taking out one star.

Overall, I highly recommend this book but before you purchase, make sure to decide if you'd rather read this on your Kindle.

This is a huge book - 1539 pages
By Amazon Customer
I have read other books by Stanek and they've been quite good. I did not read the entire 1500+ page book that I am reviewing now. Why? Well, it is 1500 pages and a technical book. Further, I am a technical writer for Microsoft and I know most of what is in this book already. However, I am not personal friends with the author, so I don't consider this review biased in favor of the author. I like his work. In this book, he attempts to cover everything. He does not take on just "What is new" - he attempts to cover the whole product. That is not an easy job, but he does it admirably. Is everything here? No. I can only imagine that this would be more of an encyclopedia set if everything was here. I think the thing that I have to offer is covered well, what is maybe overkill, and what could be covered better:

1. What is covered well?
+ Boot configuration and troubleshooting (very, very good stuff!)
+ Troubleshooting hardware / devices and device drivers
+ Basic Active Directory Design
+ Registry
+ Performance (big section and some beyond what I would do, but I cannot call it overkill)
+ RAID is covered well enough because most people use hardware RAID (there is not a ton of that in here)

2. What is maybe overkill?
= Taskpads (they are fairly unreliable and unpopular, in my experience)
= Disk and File systems (hard to judge, but there sure is a lot on this topic)

3.What is maybe missing? Okay, it is 1530 pages, so asking for more seems ridiculous. I am not asking for more! I am just telling you what else you might want to learn about Windows Server 2012 that I don't see much of in this book:
- PowerShell for everything (some PowerShell commands are in here, but that is not a specialty of this book)
- Hyper-V (not much)
- Dynamic Access Control (there is a little mention, but that uses claims-based access controls)
- Active Directory (more advanced administration concepts)
- Virtualization improvements for domain controllers (there is cloning DCs, but not a big discussion on improvements in virtualized domain controllers)
- IPv4 and IPv6 (it is covered enough for most, but there are entire books on these concepts

What else? Topics I don't know a lot about, but I expect to read more about:
+ Trusted Platform Module (TPM) - I use it, but there seems to be details in here I haven't seen. Looks good!
+ ReFS (Resilient File System) - I am interested to learn more
+ Data deduplication

Overall, this is a good book for people who are really trying to get up to speed with the technology and don't necessarily have a lot of background. The book doesn't expect that you are already a fully knowledgeable system admin. Although this book is huge, it won't teach you everything you need to know to be fully competent either. However, it is a really good start!
