Just a great book to have in the library! Must have!

There just seems to be so much to learn with VB.NET and the .NET Framework to do things you've always done in VB or VBScript or any other language. Sure, you could go search for it, but just pick up this book. It'll save you hours and hours of hassle! This has been my most valuable book. Buy now!

Solid reference, resource

I wish I had this book a year ago when I first started developing with .NET! Even though I'm no longer a newbie, I'm already using this book as a one-stop reference. I tested it against other books, and this one gave me the quickest solutions for making thread "wrappers", serializing objects in different ways, and writing a timer-based Windows service (three tasks I had in an average week).
Overall, this cookbook has a little bit of everything, and the dense examples and explanations are so much better than the typical .NET programming book (most are full of fluff and theory). Even experienced developers should find a few new tricks here. For me, the security chapter was the best new material (including how to restrict permissions on dynamically loaded assemblies, encrypt objects, and use XML signatures). The ADO.NET chapter is good, but I would have liked even more. The ASP.NET and web services chapters are also good, but hard-core ASP.NET developers will probably want a dedicated cookbook for this stuff, because many topics are not covered. The early, more basic chapters, were also great--you'll be surprised how useful it is to have a list of the core .NET interfaces (for making objects serializable, convertible, disposable, comparable, etc.) and examples how to implement them. Overall, this is a great book for browsing, reviewing, or just honing your skills.

Great Format, Great Content!

Finally, a book with one-stop shopping for VB.NET! I've read several cookbook-style programming titles in the past, and I was pleasantly surprised to find this has much more depth than I expected. It can't cover everything (.NET is huge), but every time I pick the book up I learn something new. There are so many highlights--just browse through the table of contents and you'll see what I mean!
Here are some of my favorites:
* Send keystrokes to another app
* Create a thread-safe control wrapper
* Great data-binding tips (image-to-picture box, etc.)
* Factory, Registry, Singleton, Memento, and Lazy Initialization patterns
* POP3, FTP, and Ping classes in the networking section
* How to change a password into a salted hash for storage in a database
* Use ZIP and PDF files (disclaimer: some third-party code is required, although it's free)
* Manage print jobs that are underway
* Get Windows accounts and roles
* Do hit testing with custom graphics
* Defend against SQL injection
* Dynamically generate an ASP.NET graphic
* Add ASP.NET controls on the fly
* MAPI and MCI (unfortunately, just through the ActiveX controls)
* Upload binary data with a web service
* Use a web service in VB 6

Still counting the errors!

Being new to Excel 2007, I figured this book would be the best place to start, given that it's published by Microsoft Press.

I'm about halfway through, and though I have garnered some useful information, I found the book to be so full of errors(and bonehead moments) that it has become a form of entertainment just anticipating the next one.

The first little omen was on page xxiv, where under the Creating and Managing Presentations header, the bullet item "Creating Effective Presentations" appears twice. OK, nobody is perfect.

The very first exercise instructs you to open an existing workbook file, "Exception Summary". The very next instruction is to close the file. This wasn't an error, but it was pretty funny.

There are files and folders missing from the companion CD, missing instructions, instructions that lead you down rabbit holes...

To their credit, Microsoft does maintain an error log on their website, but at least one of the listed "fixes" is still wrong, as far as I can tell.

I wonder if Microsoft Press is hiring proofers...

This book looks good on the surface; However, The descriptions do not match the screens that I have on my version of Excel 2007. It is very difficult to follow and I would not recommend it to anyone new to this software.

Helpful but falls short

Like Brian said this is not a very detailed book and most of what I have read so far is right off the Technet sight. I don't like the fact that it refers you to Technet over and over again. One of the reasons I bought the book was due to the LACK of detailed information on Technet in the area I am currently working on which is AD LDS in 2008 server. I assumed since this is a Resource Kit book it would be more detailed.
It is not a total loss however as it has helped me get a little closer to understanding what I am doing with my LDAP project.
I guess if you want a book that does give you more information than some of the bigger books on Server 2008 on AD then it's worth the read. I would really like to see a in-depth book with real life examples on AD and AD LDS. Most of the books I have been looking at on Safari lack details as well. To much "general" information and not enough meat.

Excellent levels of detail

The Windows Server 2008 Resource kit has tremendous ammounts of detail into how the difference aspects of Windows actually works. This is a great way to study for the MCITP exams when used in conjunction with the Training Kits for each exam. If you really want to get to know Windows Server 2008, this is the product to buy. Amazon has this product for so much less than the retail price and unless you buy it used, you won't find it cheaper anywhere. The CD includes a wealth of information, scripts, templates and even a PDF copy of each book. There is also a PDF copy of two more books and several chapters from several other books. The value is unmatched.

Great Book to Jump-in With

I wrote a couple of sidebars for this book and enjoyed reading it when I received my copy. If you're looking for a book to give you a good picture of the Windows Server 2008 AD landscape including the various services which have been branded as part of AD (e.g. Certificate Services, Rights Management, etc), this is a good title to pick-up. There are plenty of screenshots and procedural walkthroughs as well as advice from the standpoint of Microsoft. If you're looking for something super detailed and in-depth, this may not be what you're looking for.

excellent book if you have written some code before but are new to C# and Visual Studio

My Background: Prior to opening this book I'd written a few web applications using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I'd describe myself as an intermediate level JavaScript programmer. I had used the Visual Studio IDE for web development a couple of times. I had never written a program in C#.

This book is very straight forward and moves very quickly, which is exactly what I was looking for. Be ready to take notes and read with your laptop open because this is a "learn by doing" experience.

This is a no-frills text. It jumps right into learning C# and is - as the title suggests - step by step with each new step building on the last.

Full disclosure: I am only part-way through the book. I will come back and update my review if my opinion changes but from what I've done so far and from skimming the other sections, this is a great way for a person with some code experience to learn C# / VS 2013.

NOTE: In the first few pages of the book it says that it is not compatible with VS 2013 express. This is a big oversight in my mind, but in reality you can use VS 2013 express just not for the Windows Store Apps chapter. The work around for students is to use your college email address to sign on for Microsoft Dreamspark and get the full version of VS 2013 Professional for free. Alternately, you can get the 90 day free trial.

If it weren't for the incompatibility with Express, this would be a 5 star book. If you have VS 2013 Professional or if you are a college student, it IS a five star book.

Fantastic

I'm an intermediate level programmer with no formal computer science education. When I started this book I had about 5 months on-the-job experience with Python, and a couple months with C#. This book gave me the foundation I needed to take full advantage of what C# has to offer. Every chapter is very clearly written, and teaches step by step, just like the title says.

I like to learn by doing, so I was glad that examples with sample data are included for every concept. First you learn the theory, then you try it out. For those days where I understand the gist of a topic and don't have time to do the examples, I can look at the finished code samples instead.

The writing is very clear, and the editing is clean. The author is concise, specific, and never wasteful. This book has been a tremendous help at my job, and the skills I've learned have allowed me to take on many new responsibilities.

That said, This probably isn't the best book for a first-time programmer. C# is not as intuitive as a language as Python or Ruby. However, if you have a little programming experience, and you really want to learn, this book is the first stop I'd recommend.

Very Easy to Understand

I purchased this book and C# in a nutshell. I read the first chapter of both, and this book explained things much better with more examples. Having only minor experience in Visual Basic, C++, and HTML, the explanations are extremely helpful. The free examples online (provided by the book) are also very nice. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in programming (Windows store or desktop; it explains for both and works with Windows 7).

Quick heads up, this book is around 800 pages, so it isn't exactly light reading; it is comprehensive.

You gotta be looking to work at the big end of town

This book is a very worthwhile read and reference but it does have a limited audience. That audience is restricted to those with access to the high end version of SharePoint Server 2010. Basically SharePoint Server 2010 will all the options enabled. It is however a very worthwhile reference for the simple reason that there are few books that dive into that level of detail on these high end features of SharePoint Enterprise.

Initially I was going to say that this book focused more on talking about the capabilities of BI (business intelligence) in SharePoint Server but as I got more into the book I found there were more and more hands on examples which made it really great. The only problems with these examples is that they require a high level of product and setup to really take advantage of but they certainly do give insight into what BI is possible with SharePoint especially when combined with SQL server.

This book is therefore great for people looking to understand the high end features of SharePoint Server 2010 (and to some extend Office 365) but it does require an investment in products such as Visio, SQL Reporting and so on that in many cases are not readily obtained or implemented. This is certainly not a book for end users and is more aimed at the IT Professional looking to bring the integration required for BI into the workplace. However, for the IT professional looking to scale up their SharePoint skills to the higher level of product and potentially to the abilities provided by Office 365 this is more than a worthwhile reference for the library.

Great book that shows what you can do with SharePoint for your BI projects

This is great introduction level book for SharePoint admins or BI Developers who wants to understand how to get the most out of SharePoint in BI environment. This book gives you a very good introduction to Excel Services, PowerPivot for Excel and SharePoint, Visio and Performance Point services. There are many step-by-step guides that show you to work with each BI tool.
For example, for PowerPivot this book has step by step guide on how to load data into PowerPivot for Excel from database, Windows Azure Marketplace or clipboard, how to write simple DAX formulas, how to create charts/reports and how to publish and use your workbook in SharePoint.
Overall this is great book!

Andrew Whitechapel is a senior program manager for the Windows Phone Application Platform team, performing scoping and design for the application platform (both native and managed), including v7.5 (Mango) and future releases. He is responsible for core parts of the platform, including the application packaging/install database and services, the application execution manager, and the resource manager (memory, CPU, thread pool, etc). He has written several books, including the Microsoft Press books Microsoft .NET Development with Microsoft Office and Inside C# (for which he was a co-author), as well as numerous articles for MSDN Magazine and other publications.

Very Comprehensive

What this book isn't:
1. A book about XNA game development
2. A book about things you can get to underneath the normal Windows Phone API

I was not interested in 1, but was hoping for 2, although I did not believe it was even possible. Apparently it's not. But with that said, this is the most comprehensive book I've found on Windows Phone 7 development. It goes well beyond the usual "how you do things" stuff you normally find in programming books, and goes into the "how you should do things" area. This information is of great use if you would like to use the Windows Phone 7 API, versus fighting it to a standstill. Because you can't know how the API developers intended you to use the API, just from examining the API, having a book like this available is invaluable.

But don't get me wrong, it also goes into how you do things in far greater detail than any other Windows Phone 7 programming books I have. I was fortunate enough to have gotten this just as I was ramping up on a new Windows Phone 7 project, and I've found it a very useful book all around.

The big Windows Phone encyclopedia

Un gran libro de consulta de este sistema operativo para dispositivos móviles de Microsoft. Completo en contenido, uno de los más completos, y tratado este en profundidad.

Me ha sorprendido la cantidad de información que lanza el autor en este libro. Después de leer bastantes manuales sobre el tema, uno va viendo como el nivel de los mismos también avanza a medida que avanza el nivel de los programadores y el de la plataforma. Este es un libro en el que se ve eso, no solo enseña lo justito para empezar, sino que profundiza y te cuenta todos (o casi) los entresijos de cada de los topics relacionados con Windows Phone.

Definitivamente es un libro de referencia que debe estar en la librería de todo desarrollador de WP7, ya que siempre tiene información útil y que a veces no he podido encontrar por otros medios. La única parte negativa, es que no está pensado como un manual paso a paso, de ahí que tenga un 9 y no el 10. Por eso no se recomienda como primer libro o manual de iniciación. Una vez que tengas un poco de experiencia, me repito, es una gran opción.

I was surprised by the amount of information that throws the author in this book. After reading many manuals on the subject, one is seeing the same level is also progressing with advancing the level of the programmers and the platform. This is a book that is so, not only teaches justito to start, but deepens and tells you all (or almost) the intricacies of Windows Phone.

Definitely a reference book that should be in the library of every developer of WP7, as it always has useful information and sometimes I could not find otherwise. The only downside is that it is not intended as a manual step by step, and thus has a 9 and not 10. So not recommended as a first book or manual initiation. Once you have a little experience, I repeat, is a great option.

Awesome Book!!! Great Coverage!!!

This book starts with a great overview of the entire Windows Phone landscape. The author does a great job of introducing the development lifecycle and the anatomy of a basic windows phone application.

After the initial chapter the author continues in Part I Building Blocks to lay a solid foundation for the rest of the book. The book has a total of four parts. I have listed each part below with the chapters they include.

In Part II Application Model the author digs into the guts of the way applications should behave and how to figure out what is going wrong through diagnostics and debugging.

The third part of the book shows us how we can integrate the phone's built in features into our applications. It includes coverage of the launchers and choosers, the audio and video APIs, web services, the Web Browser control, OData, Bing Maps, Deep Zoom, Azure, Sky Drive, the push notification architecture, and a ton of performance tips.

The last part of the book covers the 7.5 enhancements and there are a ton of them. Some of them include multi-tasking, background agents, camera manipulation, and local database support.

The thing I like most about this book is that the author covers the architecture and design of the different features he covers. He makes extensive use of diagrams to give you an over all picture of the topics being covered, and then he digs into the details.

He backs up the details he covers with tons of code samples. The code samples that accompany this book are very well organized and usable.

The only thing that could have made this book better is to have it printed in color. After reading several recently that were in color I got kind of spoiled. I can't ding the book for that though.

I think this book is good for the experienced C# developer looking to begin Windows Phone development as well as experienced Windows Phone developers. The book makes a great cover to cover read as well as a great reference.

All in all, if you are a Windows Phone developer, you need to have this book by your side.

Great recource on how PKI can protect your network.

The Windows Server 2003 PKI and Certificate Security book will demystify PKI and certificate based security implementations for you. It will be very helpful to anyone who wants to learn what PKI can do for them or needs to know the specifics of how to implement it in their network for many uses from large networks to the small office. For many the thought of PKI, intimidates them. It should not as it really is not that difficult and can improve your security tremendously over traditional password based authentication and allow use of strong encryption and digital signing [proof of entity and integrity]. PKI is used to generate public and private keypairs for use in applications such as L2TP VPN, IPSEC, 802.1X authentication for wireless and wired networks, EFS file encryption, application signing, secure email encryption and signing, SSL website security, and smart cards.

The book starts out with the basic concepts of PKI and the use of symmetric and asymmetric encrytpion and how they work together in PKI. It also explains digital signiatures - the other big use for certificates/private keys. It is written to be very understandable and the user or admin that has little understanding of PKI should have no problem learing the content and implemeting it. It does assume a basic understanding of Active Directory for Enterprise Certificate Authority use and also covers stand alone Certificate Authority. The book is also written so that you can refer to indivudual chapters such as the excellent chapter on how to implement 802.1X wireless if you do not need to know other material covered.

PKI hierarchy is well covered whether you need to install a single CA, levels of CA's in your network, or even how to setup cross trusts to other CA hierarchies for full trust or conditional trust. If you have a Windows 2000 forest you can learn how to prep your forest schema for using a Windows 2003 Enterprise CA to take advantage of the new features such as autoenrollent for XP clients, configurable version 2 certificate templates, and archivable private keys for certificates used for encryption.

Other important topics such as how to install a CA, configure a CAPolicy.inf file, use the certutil utility for many tasks, obtaining and implementing your own OID, role separation for those that need it, CRL and AIA publication points which is very important to the success of your PKI particularly if you are going to use an offline CA or for computers not on your network that use your certificates, configuring an offline CA and securing it, using HSM's - hardware security modules to protect the CA's private key, how to configure version 2 templates, configuring Group Policy for autoenrollment, configuring auditing, using Web Enrollment, how to backup and restore your CA and disaster recovery, how to publish certificates to Active Directory using certutil or PKIhealth tool, the concept of "chaining" to a trusted root CA [very important], and more. With the book comes a lot of helpful tools and scripts such as an example of a CAPolicy.inf and numerous scripts including enroll.vbs that can be used to enroll users on Windows 2000 computers for certificates via logon script.

The last part of the book is about application specific use of certificates such as for EFS, email, VPN, smart cards, and more. The chapters cover the advantages of using certifcates for each application, how to plan it, and the specifics of how to implement including how to configure certificate templates and issue certificates to users and computers in in a step by step fashion to have you up and running for that application. There are many tricks and traps in the book that can save a user a lot of time such as verifying that a VPN server is in the RAS and IAS servers group as one example. These tips show that the book is much more than a cut and paste of white papers as some books are. Then end of each chapter has links to many related KB articles, white papers, and RFC's for those that want more information.

I found the Windows Server 2003 PKI and Certificate Security book puts it all together for Windows 2003 PKI from understanding the concept of PKI to putting it to use in your own network to greatly enhance your security. Microsoft has many excellent white papers and articles on PKI for Windows 2003 but for many this book will be all that is needed and an invaluable resource for those that use it, plan to use it, or want to know more about it.

The best resource that I recommend

This is the best book that ever have from Microsoft press. If you are the network administrator, I recommend you to have this book in order to manage your work at the workplace. I just get this book a week ago and just start to read it and I found it is very good of explaination and have a good tool to use on the CDROM. My favorite book is the group policy guid, registry guide and automation tool kit. The other book is good too. The CDROM is package with everything that you need to learn from the book. One thing that I don't like is an e-book on the CDROM is made in PDF. I prefer to use it with the CHM file which is easy for me to browse and print. This point Microsoft press should be change in order to access the book on the CDROM

A Critical Resource

This set provides the "missing" instruction book for Server 2003. It is full of helps, hints, and workarounds, written by experts. I cannot imagine trying to maintain a Server 2003 network of any size without these books on your shelf.

It is a decent read to help you prepare for the 70-687 exam

This is a good book, first the facts... Its paperback, 7 chapters, 347 pages (first page of Chapter 1 to last page of Chapter 7)
Book is copyrighted 2014, printed and bound in USA

I only found 1 typo and one screen shot that didn't belong with the topic it was covering, besides that the book is pretty accurate.
There are areas where the author talks to you like this is the first time you have used a computer, to hey there is too much here to cover so go research it on TechNet.... I am okay with both options, I am not looking to have this book be a paint by numbers for passing the exam.

Like another reviewer stated/noted, there is no PDF or online freebies/resource.
You'll have to use TechNet, but hey, the author points out the URLs for you so go look it up....
Book is a fast read, I received it on Thursday 10/31/2014 and as of 11/05/2014 I just finished Chapter 6.

Not enough information to adequately prepare one to pass the ...

Not enough information to adequately prepare one to pass the test. It would be more beneficial to check out a book for the previous version of test and then read the changes that occurred in 8.1.

Check out: MCTS Guide to Microsoft Windows 7, Byron Wright/Leon Plesniarski Exam 70-680, for a more solid foundation and explanation and then refer to online resources about changes in 8.1, i.e. Storage Spaces, etc.

Bottom line: not worth the money.
