Another great installment from Sayed Ibrahim Hashimi and William Bartholomew. Explains the new features in TFS 2012 and includes many examples of new enhancements and custom activities. The only book that explains in depth detail the inner workings of msbuild and TFS Build.

Get it done faster! A must for document presentation.

Normally I don't buy how to software books, as the material value is useless when the next release comes out. The information in this book had all the vocabulary needed to use the program, working examples that will exceed the next version release, and saved my frustration with the Visio software. I watched all those Visio Guy films at Microsoft's website, and I thought they were great and imaginative, yet when I wanted to work with Visio beyond playing with its interface, those videos weren't of much help. This book opens the software secrets up quick, and gets you into production. Far less wordy than the dummy books, and the author's experience and examples will transcend the next release.

Great reference and training book for Visio 2010

This is one of the best software manual and reference book that I have used.

With all the changes to Visio 2010 is was a great source of information both in the book and through the internet references in the book.

The book has both a throrough level of detail on the program, tricks to watch out for and whether a feature was new or enhanced or renamed. It also made sure you knew what version of Visio 2010 that a feature exists in. This was especially handy.

The book also makes mention of renamed features in the 2010 version of Visio.

The author certainly knows his stuff.

Truly Step-by-Step

This book is truly a step-by-step tutorial to learn by, with good screen shots and explanation. It is a bit slow to do, but that is what a novice would need. Some authors tend to be a bit lazy and do not bother to show the result of steps, but not Scott Helmers.

I am so glad I bought it, and my learing progressed well.

Like the other (4 reviewers as of 02/21/2015) reviewers stated, you will definitely need some additional aids to prepare you for the 70-688 exam.
I purchased this book along with its sister book for the 70-687 exam.
Also to point out, this book makes several references to the 70-687 book, so it may help to buy both if you weren't already planning on it.

it doesn't come with a pdf or CD or any links to download an ebook (like the other reviewer stated), there is a URL/link in the back of the book that points you to the Microsoft Virtual Academy, where there is at least 1 Windows 8.1 ebook.

The book itself is well written, it covers a fair amount of data, there are plenty of urls/links to reference on TechNet.
One thing I wish the book had was a better reference guide to the command line utilities. This would help in referencing some of the tools that can only run from command line.

My thoughts would be something that would call them out, this would help the book really stand out if you get my drift.

This book only skims the surface of what is actually on the test. It directs you to Microsoft technet library for more in depth study materials. It is a good read, but it does not prepare you for this test. You will have to use several other study materials to pass the test.

Every book si good book, I cant say that it isn't.

But this book will not give you material for passing exam 70-688.
Its hard understanding. Not so much information for technology which is part of exam.

Good in breadth, poor in depth

I passed Excel 2013 Expert Parts I and II, and used this book as the guide when studying for both exams. Using the book was an advantage in appreciating the matching of required skills to the published skills measured, but it fell way short in terms of topic depth - the material is shallow, and the practice content is very limited.

As a study 'guide' it does exactly what it says on the cover, but I would not rely on it to pass the exams. As companions to this book, I would recommend the Excel 2013 Inside Out book, the Excel 2013 Wiley Bible, and the Office Excel 2013-related training videos (in my opinion these Microsoft videos are priceless, yet free :-)
In addition, the Excel 2013 online help files and downloadable workbooks are a MUST USE resource when working your way through this guide book.

For the record, I did not pass Part I first time around, but I did pass Part II on the first go. For me, obtaining MOS 2013 Master was much harder than 2003, 2007, and 2010. With the new exam content and format, you really need to ramp up your skill levels before attempting the 2013 MOS exams!

Covers the material but does not prepare you for the test. The test is purposefully misleading in places. This book covers much more material than is tested and does so very shallowly. Unfortunately I don't know of a better resource. Be prepared to take the test more than once.

I came to believe not everything I read in review sections after I bought this book. Because I had refered to reviews for this book.
This book is like a man is murmuring about some knowledge he has in a very self-oriented way but not actually explaining anything at all.

Every explanation in this book is shallow and does not seem to even bother to give any meaningful information. For example, it doesn't give specific option names but just use generic terms such as "appropriate", which gives frustration and flabbergasting disappointment.

This is the most outrageous and absurd guide book which I have ever read or bought.

Delivers what it promises

It never ceases to amaze me how many scripting books, including this one, start off telling you that you should already have intermediate to advanced scripting skills before you read, yet spend an initial chapter explaining what an array or an object is. It leaves me feeling that their definition of what "advanced" is will differ greatly from mine. I am also always a little dismayed when throughout, a book plugs a costly script development studio and spends time pointing out why your chosen script editor isn't good enough for your projects.

That said, Advanced VBScript delivers what it promises. It is written for intermediate to advanced scripters and has the primary goal of introducing scripting formats, utilities, objects and processes that might otherwise be overlooked. The beginning introduces you to the WSF XML format for scripts, why you would want to use it, and how to convert your existing scripts to this format. From there you are shown how to utilize scripts as COM objects, how to add an interface to your scripts via HTML and HTA applications, performing remote scripting, and expand your scripts ability using database, ADSI, WMI components. The last section focuses on working with Exchange 2003, MOM 2005 and Virtual Server 2005. At around 500 pages, the book is certainly not an exhaustive reference for each component examined. You are provided a good introduction and general instructions to the topic, given many recipe scripts for immediate inclusion in your environment, and then provided additional detail on where to go to focus on the topic.

The book is formatted to not only be a start to finish textbook, but also serve as an excellent reference guide for the introduced components later on. Although you may find similar scripting information scattered about other VBScript books, here you have a great deal of well presented topics that cover a broad spectrum of concepts. Inclusion of this title to your reference library will provide you the information you need while keeping your bookshelf compact.

Finally, a truly advanced scripting book for VBScript

Having worked with VBScript for a little over four years I am by no means an expert; however, I feel that my experience does give me somewhat of an advanced applied knowledge of scripting. I was pretty skeptical when I saw the word "Advanced" in the title, but this book laid all my concerns to rest in the early chapters.

The book begins with securing (including digital certs and policies) and encoding scripts as well as listing some nice techniques for implementing alternate credentials in WMI and ADSI. For me personally, the real meat and potatoes of the book was the copious information pertaining to working with WSF and WSC files. Don and Jeffrey take the time to detail the reasons behind XML functionality as well as it's application within the scripted files. These guys clear up a lot of questions on these two subjects and how to package your scripts using these technologies. They wrap up the package peice with explanations around HTA's and form controls in HTML scripts.

The book moves on to cover topics such as ADSI and ADO scripting, working with WshController and remote scripts, WMI and WQL classes and techniques, and different applicable real world examples. All this information is then wrapped up with tidbits of using scripting editors to debug, sign, and package your scripts as well the wizards (WMI, ADSI, WSF, etc) and other tools available to make scripting easier.

I've obtained quite a few VBScript books over the years and this one is by far the only one dedicated to truly advanced VBScripting. If you are new to scripting with VBScript, you might want to start with another book geared to learning the methods, properties, classes, etc of the syntax and the technologies it can use. While this book does offer great explanations on advanced topics, you really need to have a solid background in scripting before you read it.

As good as they say

This is an excellent follow on book to "Microsoft Windows 2000 Scripting Guide," ISBN: 0735618674, which was my previous bible. I had long ago advanced past much of what is written in that excellent foundation book for VBScript, and this advanced volume really fills in the gaps. After purchasing numerous VB and VBA references that are nothing more than syntax libraries, I feel I finally have the big picture on the capabilities of this technology with this book. It is all clear.

Combined with the Windows Internals book, I don't think there is anything I couldn't do now that I had wanted to do with this technology previously. The chapters on scripting database connections and HTAs are worth the price alone. If you do any serious scripting work, this book is the true capstone. And who else could publish such a book than the horse's mouth itself?

The Reference that VBA Programmers have always wanted

As a reasonably experienced VBA programmer I have acquired a long succession of Access manuals that for me have have never really met their aspirations. This book is different. It assumes from the start that you are experienced with Access or serious programming so no space is wasted dealing with trivialities, nor does it presume to force the reader into a prescribed way of working. The more one works through the book the more one appreciates the immense variety of different approaches and techniques that are covered, and this is achieved with a clarity and conciseness that belies the complexity. In its 700 pages in contains far more real meat than most books offer in twice the volume and it is hard to find a serious Access programming topic that is not addressed somewhere. The downside of that conciseness is that to start with it can take a while to track down what one is looking for, and one may also have to look at the downloadable companion code to see the detail for a particular issue, but once one has got used to the way the book is structured this ceases to be a problem. Looking at those areas where I have a particular expertise I could not quarrel with the way they are presented, and browsing more deeply I have discovered valuable ideas that I can use immediately. But equally importantly the book addresses emerging concepts and alternative techniques, and thus the book provides the impetus and resources to move forward into evolving technologies. For the serious VBA programmer this has to be the reference book of choice.

Access 2010 VBA Programming for Professionals

Access 2010 VBA Programming Inside Out

Not having reviewed a book before, my first thought was to search the book quickly for solutions to the last 4 problems that I had encountered that were outside my comfort zone. I am delighted to say that the code for 3 of the problems was available within the book and, with very good notes, immediately comprehendible. Better still, the index was sufficiently detailed to go straight to the code and the explanation. The 4th - programming for Pivot Tables - was not mentioned but I have no idea how many people wish to make use of this facility.

I then started at the beginning and read through the whole book apart from the section dealing with Azure and access to the Cloud which are too much out of my client's current requirements to spend too long on. However, I am just starting an upgrade from Access 97 to Access 2007/SQL Server 2008 and anticipate that the sections 14 and 15 (Using SQL Server and Upsizing Access to SQL Server) will be most useful.

Overall the text is clear, the coded examples are sensible, well annotated and easy to follow, the font used and the general presentation are excellent. That being said, this is not a manual for the novice but a far more effective and extensive VBA reference manual and an essential complement to the Microsoft Access Inside Out manuals.

Don't be a beginner in VBA.

I am impressed with the information. It does require a little more knowledge of VBA, however, than just walking into this with no knowledge at all. Two things to look at before getting into this book:
1) The first two videos of the "Wise Owl Tutorials" video series on VBA. These are done for Excel, so after the first two videos, the language is different. However, the incredibly well presented information on the syntax and layout of programming in general (specific, in this case, to VBA) is completely invaluable. Also, it is worthy of note that the VBA Editor window is identical on ALL MS Office products. 2) You MUST understand the naming conventions that are used in this book! It will COMPLETELY lose you if you don't know a LOT about Access and the naming conventions that are normal. Enjoy this book! With the examples you can download from MS (referenced on the back cover and inside), you can practice and learn very well. This is good!

Will help get you started...

I am a .NET and Flash developer looking for additional ways to get the job done. I am currently looking at WPF and Expression as a development platform, so I thought I would start with this book. I am glad I did. Step by Step gives the reader a thorough tour of the Expression Blend IDE and how to use many of its basic features. The authors do a very good job of presenting the topics in small manageable chunks and this keeps the material moving along at a good pace. You never get bogged down in a 200 page chapter, trying to decipher what is going on. There are many good examples in each chapter and the material also builds nicely from chapter to chapter. At the end of each chapter there is a "Key Points" section which helps summarize the important topics. I used this to gauge my level of learning and to see if I needed to revisit any topics.

The chapter that discussed Expression Design was a nice bonus and gives the reader an idea on how to build and use assets with Expression Blend. It is a basic introduction to Design only. Anyone looking for more can use this book as a starting point but should look for another title dedicated to Expression Design to learn more. A brief discussion of the use of Adobe assets was also included.

I plan on doing Expression design and development, so I recommend reading the later chapters on SketchFlow and the Designer/Developer Collaboration. They are informative and will give the reader a basic understanding of the two primary roles in Expression.

All in all it is an above average book that will help get you started with Expression Blend.

Great book for developers to learn Silverlight from a designer perspective

I have been an asp.net developer for many years and recently was assigned to rewrite an application in Silverlight 4. I have had glimpses of Silverlight in the past but never sat down to learn it. I was given Expression Blend 4 and was somewhat intimidated by the application - it had a few similarities to Visual Studio but not a whole lot. I thought this book would be a good first step to learning Silverlight with Expression Blend - and I was right!

The book is excellent for developers not only to learn Silverlight, XAML, etc but to also see things from the design perspective. It is very basic and its step by step format assumes that you know very little. This makes it is easy to follow and understand. This would also be a book for a beginning designer with little or no programming experience. One thing to keep in mind for developers - it is not a Silverlight programming book - it touches a bit on C# but the focus is on the user interface and creating layouts and animations etc - mostly without writing one line of C#. If you want a more C#/Silverlight/MVVM developer oriented book I would look elsewhere.

The lessons in this book are enjoyable and do not take a long time to go through. I wish there could be more technical programming books like this!

A Great Place to Start!!!

Being primarily an architect and developer my use of Blend can be very limited at times. I use Blend mostly for prototyping with SketchFlow and I wanted to get a refresher on the functionality I don't use day to day.

Over the past several months I have been cracking this book open over lunch (when I get a lunch) and going through all the exercises. It has been a very fun exercise.

The book starts out with an introduction to Silverlight and WPF and then has a chapter on the Blend 4 IDE. The book continues with a chapter on Designing an Interface, XAML and C#, Animations and Transformations, Adding Interactivity, Creating Design Assets, Resources, Skinning Controls, Working with Data, Using SketchFlow, and Designer/Developer Collaboration.

Each chapter is a lesson or a set of lessons that introduce you to the topic by creating a hands on experience.

One of the things I really liked was that the book introduced Expression Design 4 in the chapter Creating Design Assets and it touched on it in another chapter. I hardly ever get a chance to work in Expression Design so this was great.

The book does a great job of showing you how to work with sample data. One of the main problems we as developers always face is populating the user interface to see how it will really work when there is no data available on the project. That is no longer a problem with Silverlight and WPF.

One downside is the black and white print. I have started really enjoying the color books being put out on WPF, Silverlight, and Expression Blend. Have this one in black and white did not affect the quality of the lessons, but it would have been better in color.

The code was very well organized and went together well with the book. There were no errors or issues with the code. The thing I liked best about this code was that the author only supplied the base which prepared you for the lesson. That made you do the lesson instead of reading about it and skimming the code. Having to finish the samples added a lot of value to each lesson.

Overall I think the author did a great job of introducing a ton of functionality that is available in Blend 4.

If you are doing anything with Silverlight and WPF you owe it to yourself to get familiar with Blend, and this is the book you should start with.

He also wrote MCSE Core Exams in a Nutshell and Windows Vista: The Definitive Guide for O'Reilly.

Good balance of material

This book has a good balance of foundational information and practical applications of Powershell 2.0. If there was a version of this for Powershell 1.0 I wish I had known about it. :-) The author assumes that you have some background in scripting so it doesn't come across as a pure beginner's book. The book provides practical examples for Powershell in the Windows environment and some background information on each subject. It has an appropriate balance between detail and maintaining a "big picture" view of teaching you about how to use Powershell.

The only request I make of the author in a future edition is to provide a little more coverage on loading assemblies through the Reflection.Assembly class. This is a minor issue though because he does discuss when to use it and of course one can always consult the online Microsoft documentation for additional methods.

Some of the big pluses in the book include a "real world" view and I particularly liked the quick overview of SQL Server support and how to add the supporting snapins to the basic Powershell environment - that saved me a lot of time!

Overall, one of the better books out there on the subject for those interested in a hands-on approach.

Stanek Fan - Book was better than I thought it would be

I assumed the book would focus on a bunch on PS One-Liners for basic administration tasks. Stanek proved me wrong, he jumped into key points that I assumed would have been left out because of the nature of the book e.g. "quick and dirty guide to just get it done". He proved me wrong. He touched on the skills required to actually write PS scripts, manage profiles and moved beyond just the quick PS One-Liners that you find in other books.

Another job well done by Stanek. I own every pocket consultant he has ever written. I even own second editions and almost own all of his non pocket consultant titles.

His books are a must have for any seasoned Windows IT administrator. Owning one of his books separates the men from the boys.

Adequate administration quick reference

I got this book because the XML Pocket Consultant book by the same author was so good. The Powershell book is not so clearly written.

If you know Powershell and just need a quick reference focused on Windows admin tasks, then this book might be useful.

Otherwise, the Cookbook by Holmes (O'Reilly) explains specific solutions better. The Manning book Powershell in Action is the best written guide to Powershell in general.

This book mostly just sits on my bookshelf unused.
