Great book for an Intro to .NET and C#
By Robert L. Grant
I am about 85% through this book and it is great if you are looking for a comprehensive intro to .NET and C#. If you are already familiar with most of .NET and want something in-depth on a particular aspect of .NET, than you should probably look elsewhere. I attended a 1 week, $2500 class on .NET and this book is much better from my perspective. Covered most of the same topics, but in more depth than the class (although still not beyond intermediate level). The book is tutorial style which I like for the most part. So yes, you need to be in front of your computer. Remarkably, I have not had ANY problems with any of the code so far other than one difference in a diagram display which did not effect the programs operation. Now that I am about through the book, I know what I want to learn more about and have an excellent overview of .NET and C#. Just keep in mind that it is a beginning to intermediate level book.

good read
By lologecko
recommend purchasing this book if you are new to C#. this book got me up and running quickly. i bought VS.NET and started using the available documentation. very BIG mistake. after reading reviews on this book, i ordered it. very good move. it has taken me a month to get up to speed using this book and walking through each (and every) example. my investment, in both time and money, has paid-off. had i not gone through the book step by step, i would have wasted my time trying to scale the steep learning curve inherent within C#.NET. i undertook this learning experience not knowing much of anything. as such, i had no idea of the steepness of the learning curve; nor, the OO mind-set to be assimilated. the author's clear and concise explanations, and their use of relevent examples are prepared in such a way that the formidable learning curve can be scaled easily. without this step by step approach, it would have been pain and frustration to the max. take your choice, get this book and flatten the curve; or, tough it out (no pain, no gain ... right). the author's approach to teaching will save you time and frustration. this book is worth far more than it's price. the way i figure it, i read through this book twice, and only paid for it once, what a bargin. for me the results are great. last month i couldn't spell C#. this month, i are one. have a nice day :)

A C# book that actually delivers
By Travis Owens
Too often books are either too hard by going into the subject and assuming you already know C#, or too simple by explaining a language as if you've never programmed before. This book is just right as it explains C# without insulting you on what a loop means. One thing I really liked about this book is that while it quickly shows you how to use Visual Studio.NET it doesn't pretend to be a VS.NET tutorial like how many .NET books do, including many Microsoft books. If you want a VS.NET tutorial go buy Visual Studio Step by Step or similar.

"Noooo!"
By Dimitri Shvorob
... is my measured response to the reviews entitled "Full coverage of the subject matter" and "A great reference book on SSIS 2012". It is also my warning to those considering this book as an SSIS learning aid.

You have to wonder what's going on if the book gets around to building its first SSIS package in Chapter 7: if it were a book for beginners, Chapter 2 or 3 would be a more appropriate place, and if it were a book for intermediate or advanced SSIS users, this introductory material would not be needed at all. The beginner who persevered through Chapters 1-6, learning about the upgrade procedure and the new features of the 2012 release (revised syntax of XML-format SSIS package files, anyone?), gets to load a text file into a database - and then, without a single transformation explained, is asked to implement parent-child packages, and execute them with T-SQL (!) and C# (!!). With this, core SSIS training is over, and the book moves on to more advanced or niche topics like CDC, "fuzzy" transformations and DQS, administration and performance.

It is only those more advanced topics, found in Part III, which can make this book worth a look. (The upgrade-and-new-features stuff of Chapters 3-5 can be found online). Although I did consider hiring an assassin to go after the author of Chapter 10 - when talking about SSIS 2012, it is very important to be clear about the differences between package deployment model and project deployment model, and that chapter fails this test like there's no tomorrow - the problem is not really with the individual chapters, but with lopsided, incomplete nature of their sum.

Dial M for "Microsoft Press, you sure dropped the ball with this one".

Quick guide to SQL 2012 IS New features
By SQL Learner
As an Intermediate developer in SQL 2005 SSIS, I found this book useful to learn all new features in 2012. However I did not have a test environment to execute the flow. I was mostly interested to learn CDC changes and Configuration changes, which were explained well. The XML file import was explained in simple terms. Enjoyed reading this book and need to dive deep-in to understand in more detail.I would definitely recommend this book as all in one package. it starts from basis and covers all the components in SSIS.

A great reference book on SSIS 2012
By Sudheer K. Maharana
It is a great book for intermediate to advanced developers in SQL Server in general or SSIS in particular. Especially I was impressed with the Chapter 3 : Upgrading to SSIS 2012 and Chapter 5: Team Development. It is always helpful to develop SSIS packages in a seamless source control environment like other SQL objects such as stored procedures, DDLs. Data cleansing chapter could have been better with little in depth explanation. However, the book is a very good reference guide for SSIS development especially if you want to know the new features of SSIS in SQL 2012, CDC, configuration, SSIS Security.
A great book indeed.

The title says it all
By J. Lindstrom
When deploying SharePoint, it is critical to plan for not only what you need now, but for how it will grow and scale down the road, especially when Document Management is involved. If you don't plan adequately for searchability, scalability, or disaster recovery, you can easily run into problems.

One criticism I have had of many SharePoint books is that they are written from a technical perspective and explain how to install and configure SharePoint, but they gloss over the critical planning stages or the best practices for scalability.

As the name of this book indicates, this is a very thorough guide covering the best practices for planning, deploying, optimizing, and organizing SharePoint. This book is not necessarily intended to give you step-by-step instructions for installing SharePoint, but rather cover the full lifecycle of a SharePoint deployment and give you best practice recommendations. The layout and organization of the book is very logical, making it easy to quickly find what you are looking for. It covers both Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and MOSS 2007. It is written to be accessible by anyone on a team evaluating or implementing SharePoint, or anyone who just wants to learn more about it.

The book is broken into the following sections:

Introduction--includes an overview of the various SharePoint Technologies, how to determine which you need, and how SharePoint will help your business.

Part I--Planning--This is not just about planning for the IT infrastructure, but more about planning for the impact that SharePoint will have on your organization, such as dealing with push-back from users after moving away from shared folders to SharePoint document libraries and breaking down departmental "information kingdoms."

Part II--Building--This section gets into best practices for building your environment, including content management strategies, the role of custom development, and dev and test environments, including replication of content between environments.

Part III--Deploying--This section has a great discussion about organizing your content and search/crawling strategy to optimize searchability for your content, security of content, business intelligence, and intranet/extranet/internet deployment scenarios.

Part IV--Operating--This section has great tips on availability, disaster recovery, capacity planning, and performance monitoring.

What I appreciated most about this book is it is very readable and does not include a lot of "fluff," just straightforward best practices. For example, in Chapter 8, the section on should SharePoint replace file servers is very straightforward about the limitation of SharePoint and when file servers should still be used.

If you are someone new to SharePoint or a System Administrator charged with deploying SharePoint, this book may leave you wanting more--it is not designed to be a how-to book; however, it does include many good recommendations for additional resources.

Wonderful book for reading a section at a time
By MikeW
My own Sharepoint 2007 book came out recently and so I have been constantly checking the Amazon US "hit parade" to see how it's been doing.

Well it's doing OK, but the book which at the moment seems to be selling in vast quantities is this MOSS 2007 Best Practices book.

Now I'll admit that before I got a copy for myself I was hard put to understand why. After all this was a book by the two people (Bill English and Ben Curry) who had (organised or) written the two existing Sharepoint Administrator Books from Microsoft Press - the massive (and, through the many authors, slightly unbalanced) Administrator's Companion and the small, but full of quality information "Administrator's Pocket Consultant - so what else could there be in this one ?

Actually there's a lot because this is probably a completely different book to any of the - by now almost 100 - SharePoint 2007 books that have gone before.

It's probably the first one that you can **and should** read without having a computer handy.

The book doesn't concentrate on teaching you how to do things - which is naturally what most of the other books do - but instead concentrates on making you THINK. Think, that is, about your options BEFORE you do things.

The other thing I've noticed is that it's the kind of book where you can dive into a topic that's maybe only a part of a section of a chapter and read just that and you will have learned something useful.

My favorite example of that is the few pages in the Document Management chapter that discuss whether or not you should use SharePoint (document libraries) as a replace for a File Server system. First there's the single line with the answer (No) but that's followed by some indication of what could be moved and what not and why. These are inter-spaced with several in-boxes containing examples from the real-world - one of which to my delight (and this IS a Microsoft Press book) actually suggested that in certain circumstances you should keep your non-Microsoft application and NOT move to SharePoint 2007!

In fact the only thing I found to object to in that section of the text was the fact that whereas "SharePoint Server" had been given its "2007" to complete the product name (unnecessary - there isn't any other "SharePoint Server"), Windows SharePoint Services had been left without it's (essential) "3.0". This comment, however, is rather like the car tests of old where the car was highly praised in all essential details but for balance it was mentioned that the ash tray was badly located!

The only other aspect I have a problem with is that it is 800 pages thick. As it's the kind of book that in my opinion you should carry around with you and just read bits of in odd moments, it's a pity that it's not thinner and lighter and is instead the size and weight of book that is more suited to being permanently located on the desk next to the computer.

Microsoft Press France actually did make two volumes out of the 1000 page Administrator's Companion when they created the French language translation of that, so it's possible and it's a pity to my mind that Microsoft Press US didn't make two volumes out of this. It would need those two 400 page volumes because there is good stuff throughout, but to my mind this book cries out to be as easy to carry around as the Pocket Consultant is and it isn't.

Maybe they are planning a Kindle version. That would at least help US readers take this "book" with them everywhere.

Outstanding SharePoint Resource!
By B. Alderman
This book is fantastic for individuals who understand SharePoint, and the normal SharePoint practices, but want more in-depth tips, tricks, and best practices written by two guys who have plenty of real-world experience.

There are plenty of suggestions for ensuring you are getting the most out of your SharePoint 2007 installation.

The book is well-written, easy to read, and more importantly, easy to understand.
It also contains a CD with lots of utilities and helpful documents that can be used in your own SharePoint environment.

I highly recommend you buy this book, as it explains a lot of areas in SharePoint that sometimes are confusing, and it also contains real-world tips and tricks that you can implement to ensure your SharePoint installation is running optimally.

Thanks and great job guys!

Microsoft Exchange 2007 SP 1
By shiv
helpful with updates. i bought the first Edition and could have gotten by with it but SP 1 brings a few more tricks into the mix so i figured i should have it. is it ESSENTIAL, probably not but if it is your primary job, i would advise it. get a PowerShell book too, there is one i recommend Professional Windows Powershell for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1

[...]

it gives you pretty good info on how to use the commands. also i recommend going to Microsoft.com directly and finding their A-Z for Exchange PowerShell commands, you will be glad you did.

Review based on Windows PowerShell content
By Marco Shaw
I just finished reviewing this book. I looked at it from the perspective of its Windows PowerShell content as I'm a Microsoft MVP who specializes in PowerShell scripting.

PowerShell is becoming more and more important. Under the covers, PowerShell is the basis of all administrative tasks done in the Exchange 2007 Management Console.

PowerShell is new and can be intimidating. However, for anyone who wants to automate tasks and become more productive, they should start investing some time in learning PowerShell. The time will soon come where PowerShell will be the common scripting language used by all Microsoft server products.

What I like about this book is that it isn't too heavy on the PowerShell content, which is good for people new to the scripting language. Concepts are clearly presented, and then there's a small section on how to do the task in PowerShell with an example provided.

Apart from its PowerShell content, the book is very well laid out, and covers every aspect of Exchange that an administrator should know about.

You have been warned
By Eric Desch
I just passed exam 70-480. I wanted to wait until after I took the test to review this book. First off, believe the other reviews who say this book is full of errors: it is. I didn't believe it could be so bad, but it is. There are also lots of type-o's and grammar mistakes. It's like this was rushed to print with absolutely no editing or proof reading. The only good thing I have to say about this book is: once I realized how many errors there were, I double-checked everything myself to make sure what the book said was (or wasn't) accurate and that helped me learn the material better. As far as learning the subject matter, you are better off with the Training Guide. As far as prepping for the test, you are better off with the Transcender and/or Measure Up practice tests. If you only rely on this book to pass the exam, I can pretty much guarantee that you will not pass. I'm going for other MCSD exams next and the reviews of other Microsoft Press books are even worse than this one, so I will not be purchasing any more Microsoft Press books; I've learned my lesson.

Left Me More Confused Than When I Started
By Darian Ross
The only good thing about the book is it goes through the exam objectives and has sample questions for each objective. There's also a "critical thinking" section at the end of chapters which makes the reader try to write the code for the exam objectives which they just read. However, the examples used for exam objectives aren't fully written and leaves the reader lost sometimes trying to figure out how things work. I've had to refer to W3C and Mozilla many, many times to figure out how JavaScript methods are supposed to work. I plan on taking the exam, but if I relied totally on this book then I'd fail with flying colors.

WARNING - WARNING - WARNING!!!!
By John Mills
I'm currently 85% of the way through reading this book in preparation for the exam. I must say, this is an absolutely sloppy pile of crap! It is full of errors. As an exam preparation book, you would think that the question and answers would be well written, and correct. Obviously no one at the publisher bothered to proofread the questions and answers, or even test them. Several questions are missing from the answers section or numbered incorrectly. Dozens of the questions and answers have errors in them meaning that in some cases, there isn't an actual correct answer. And, once you've answered them and mark yourself, you'll be confused, because the answers are just plain WRONG!

If you buy this book, you are guaranteed to get frustrated and confused.

The content itself, is not bad. Another month, polishing, proofreading and testing would've made a big difference to the quality of this book. As it stands, it's a big disappointment!

GREAT BOOK w/MANY, MANY errors
By Robert Shepard
Microsoft® Office Excel® 2007: Data Analysis and Business Modeling (Bpg -- Other)

This book should be on the desk of anyone analyzing data. It IS NOT for someone who doesn't know Excel 2007 and the basics of analyzing or working with data.

However, I've gone through Chapter 39 and have found this book is filled with all kinds of errors. I couldn't find any place on the internet that addresses these errors. Files missing or wrong (ie. Chapter 9 solution file problem numbers are incorrect), examples not matching my Office, Home, Student 2007 version (ie. pg. 43 references a DATEIF function that doesn't exist), plus many more.

The author or Microsoft needs to do a better job of proofreading or at least have a website where readers can post the errors they find so everybody using this book doesn't spend their time refinding the same errors.

Not as useful as I was hoping. Could be more in-depth with OR examples.
By David Alan Tussey
Having studied Wayne Wilson's OR materials, I was hoping this book would be a bit more technical and in-depth. Basically, I was hoping for a "how to do OR type problems with Excel". This book didn't quite meet those expectations.

For example, the forecasting portion talks only about Winter's method, which is great, but often that is too much for a simple forecast. And the LP approach doesn't really talk about Linear Programming...it only casually mentions the "Simplex" algorithm, and nothing about sensitivity tables.

So Dr. Wilson, if you're reading -- could you write a real OR book that uses the Excel 2007 tools? for real OR people?

Very useful book for financial analysis.
By FC
When I just started my career as a financial analyst, a project manager gave me a pile of condensed training materials which included the excel functions that I would be using most frequently. I bought this Data Analysis & Modeling book 2-3 weeks after my first day of work and I found many of those taught in the book aligned with those on the training materials from my manager. The book has been very useful to me as it has a lot of cases to demonstrate how those functions can be applied.

This book is a book teaching MS Excel, but shaped in a way that focuses more on functions that are useful to financial analysis. It won't make you a financial expert after reading the book -- you need to know the financial concepts like fixed / variable cost, NPV & IRR, stocks & options first, then the tools introduced in the book will help you organize, calculate or present your data.

Pros:
- Clear step by step explanation
- Lots of examples & Exercises included in CD.

If you've made it this far, you probably know what to expect from an MS Press book
By Amazon Customer
If you've used MS Press before, you will experience more of the same in this book. I read the book, used the practice tests, and bought the Self-Test software. I snuck by with a 752 to earn my Enterprise Administrator. The book (and test) focuses on design, and gives you some very nice real-world advice on how to design complex Microsoft-based Networks. It even gives you some managerial advice, which actually gives you a nice sense of pride as you read the book and know what a great certification you're about to earn.

There's no magic to taking MS Exams - my formula for every exam in the Enterprise Admin track was:

1. Read a book. Don't stress over nailing every concept. I used the MS Press books. Just read it leisurely to learn.
2. Go through the practice test CD in the book. Be able to score 80% consistently.
3. Buy a second practice test (I like Self-Test). Be able to score 80% consistently.

For the practice tests, focus on the incorrect answers as much as the correct answers. Know WHY an answer is right/wrong. I don't even use the real cert mode on the tests, I just use the practice mode and learn why the answer is what it is.

Good luck! You'll like the book if you've made it this far.

A great study guide and reference source!
By John R. Muller
Great study guide and resource!
In many cases, a Self-Paced study guide is mainly useful for preparing for the test and once you have passed the test, the book becomes a dust collector. This is not case with this book. The authors have done a fantastic job of not only covering the exam objectives, but have also written a book you will find very useful as a reference source and for providing real-world guidance as well.

Many IT books are written by individuals who are obviously subject matter experts, but write in such a convoluted fashion that it is difficult if not tedious to read their book. The authors, in this case, have written an easy to read and follow book. They have done a superlative job of presenting complex subjects in an easy to read manner (try talking about NAP to someone that makes it sound REALLY exciting!).

The book is logically broken down to cover all of the exam objectives - in fact a reference chart is included which breaks each chapter and lesson down according to the relevant exam objective. Each chapter gives numerous real-world examples to emphasize the points covered as well as detailed exercises to reinforce the concepts presented. The authors also include numerous references to Microsoft Best Practices - a nice touch that will prove beneficial to many.

All in all - I would highly recommend this book - not only as a study guide for the 70-647 test, but also as a reference source and even a best practices guide.

Very good book, but not enough for the certification
By Samuel Lambert
This book is very interesting and easy to read.

It's one of the best book I read.

In my point of view is not enough to pass the certification.

R2 certifications are more real world experience than self-study.

Good for general info, horrible for exam prep
By Snowman
Pros: These books do give you a good insight to what is offered in Server 2008 RS and some instructions how to configure certain aspects.

Cons: As others have stated, these books will NOT prepare you for the exams...this is a general rule for the MCITP exams. I started with the Windows 7 exams and after the first exam I learned that the books give you about 50% of the information you actually need to pass. I took the Windows 7 exam and even after reading the book twice, doing all the practice exams and scoring high 90's I failed the actual exam. You need to augment the books with classroom study, bootcamps, other books, etc.

The one pet peeve I have with the book is the practice exercises. First, even though the book will preface with an overview of a lab you will need to perform the exercises, it is never complete with what you actually need. Since setting up the labs in a virtual environment takes so much time (compared to the labs themselves), why can't they just give an inclusive run down of what is needed rather than a an incomplete list? I hate to be in the middle of doing the labs and realize I need another virtual machine configured to do a 5 minute lab.

Second, the labs are just too basic. Some of the lessons take < 5 minutes after spending two hours reading material. Even worse, the exercises rarely coincide with what is tested on the exam.

Overall, I wish Microsoft would stop marketing this as exam prep. It's a good reference book, but just not for exam prep.

What's to be said: It's form Microsoft Press - Yuk!!!!!!!!
By Brian
As the title of my review says, It's from Microsoft Press. So be prepared to just accept what you are told without any real in depth explanation. This is how Microsoft wants it done, so just accept it and move on. If you are new to Server 2008 or 2008 R2 in particular, and are hoping to use this book to prepare for and "PASS" the 70-646 MCITP exam. Well you best forget it. The new exams are based more on work experience than book learning. But.... Microsoft does at least tell you this in one of the early sections of the book.

I had been working with both Server 2008 and 2008 R2 for a little over a year. I also used what study materials were available prior the the exam format changing sometime around June of 2011. When I took the 70-646 exam just before Thanksgiving, I failed miserably. Mainly because the study materials I had only covered Server 2008. Most if not all of the questions I got on the exam were about technologies available in Server 2008 R2. Afterward, I was informed by a friend that a new Microsoft Press book (released back in August) covered Server 2008 R2. So wanting to pass the exam I bought it.

I have to say it did help fill in some of the gaps in my knowledge of Server 2008 R2. But as I also said, not with a great deal of in depth explanation. The book just tells you what new technologies are available in Server 2008 R2 and how to configure some of them. If you haven't worked with some of these new technologies, you will learn how to configure some of them. The how and whyfore of using theme is pretty much left up to your imagination. As I said it's from Microsoft Press, so what else would you expect.

I went back and passed the exam just before Christmas. Not solely because of this book. But because of my prior work experience and knowledge that was "augmented" by this book. Another reviewer stated that the book only covers about 10% of the material on the exam. I'm going to be just a little more gracious and say maybe 15 to 20%.

To sum up: If you are already working with Server 2008 or server 2008 R2 and want to augment you knowledge so you can pass the exam. This book will probably do the trick. But if you are just staring out in system administration, have little or no knowledge of Server 2008 (more specifically Server 2008 R2). Are hoping to pass the exam, get the certification under you belt so you can get that first big break in the IT market. Quite Frankly, this book "ain't gonna" give you what you need to pass the exam.

These books, plus practical experience in I.T. will do the job!

Sure these are MS press and as we all know that have been in the business for a while, you will need more than just an MS press book to pass the exams. Some things are overlooked and somethings are not touched on enough. Supplemental material is going to be needed. The Unleashed books are good, exam crams are good, but nothing is going to supplement better than real work experience and the ability to read between the lines. I had my MCSA 2003 and decided I wanted to do more than just the single upgrade test and exam crams, so I got these books as reference and study material among with an unleashed book. Why two resources? Because you need more than one source and different writing styles can help explain something better than another. I have been in the industry for 13 years and have worked with 2008 and 2008 R2 in the practical world since they hit the market. If you think you are going to read books alone and pass these three tests you are sorely mistaken. You are not going to spend 2 weeks reading these books with little or no experience and pass the tests. Take your time studying, doing labs if you can, and exam crams. Spend a month on it, or what time frame you need for yourself. You must have real work experience with it as well. Even if you take the MS classes and have NO experience you will fail. I've seen this way too much. I had noticed another reviewer saying these books do not cover R2, they do.

I don't give 5 stars because nothing is perfect. Don't be afraid of these books and go sign up for some exam crams and take your time. Don't rush! Good Luck!
