Sara Froehlich has been using Acrylic (newly released as Microsoft Expression Design) since it was released as Creature House Expression 2, and was in the beta testing group for Creature House Expression 3. She has written numerous tutorials for the software and has coauthored a complete Microsoft Expression course. Sara maintains a Web site dedicated to Microsoft Expression that includes tutorials, news, articles, and downloads at http://www.northlite.net/expr. In addition she teaches several online courses. She is editor of Designorati, a community-based site packed with information-creative professionals. Founded in 2005 by a group of designers and creative professionals, Designorati provides news on illustration, typography, desktop publishing, and more.

Good for newbies...

I bought this book not realizing it was for ED rather than ED2 which is what I have. There were a few parts that didn't apply to ED2 but once realized why things looked a bit off it was no big deal. For the most part the book and the accompanying files work well with ED2 also.
I found this book extremely helpful in two ways...
First, the book title says it all. It is literally a STEP-BY-STEP guide. Tons of pictures, sample files on CD, detailed explanations leaving virtually no way to get things wrong.
Second, having never worked with vector graphics, this book did a great job making things crystal clear as far as introductions go.
Excellent way to familiarize yourself with a new GUI and new concepts. I am very pleased with this book.

Great Book!

I purchased this with Expression Studio and I am glad I did. The Step By Step approach makes it easy to learn. I used the e-book included on the DVD on one monitor and Expresion Design on the other and walked thought all the exercises. It doesn't cover everything, but it enough to get you started using this tool.

Written in 2008, but is still perfectly good for use in 2015 -- MS Expression Design 4 hasn't changed from the earlier versions.

-I downloaded the MS Expression Design 4, here in 2015. I was worried if a book written for the first version would be relevant. Yes, it is relevant, as if Microsoft didn't change anything! So I'm not sure if I should be happy or disappointed. The book is current despite its date, but what is wrong with the software that it hasn't evolved in seven years? Well, I'm sure you get what you pay for with microsoft. Honestly, the only two problems I found with the book were 1) rarely, a menu listing isn't the same as in the book. And 2) in the Properties Panel, the area at the top no longer announces the tool you have selected as previous versions did (and the book still shows).
- Let's see. Also, I bought the Kindle edition and was worried that I might not get the practice files that come on the CD. Well, a few pages into the book there is a link to download a zip file from a website and they all came through fine.
- The author names a number of useful keyboard shortcuts, which is much appreciated.
- I only bought this after printing out the Microsoft Expression Design "help" menu. Turned out that was useless as a tutorial. Then I tried using the free tutorials I was able to find by a blogger on the web. I wish I had just bought this book immediately instead of wasting my time with them.
