I bought this set a couple months ago. I'm just finishing studying for the 2008 AD Config test (70-640).

As others have mentioned, there are several errors in the book. There is an errata posted on the Microsoft site that lists a couple dozen errors and I found about that many more myself that were not listed.

One nice thing is that You are encouraged to set up a virtual lab environment. Unfortunately, it doesn't really tell you how to do that, logical points to make snapshots, etc. Some of the labs rely on exercises from previous labs, and there's no chart for which virtual machines will or will not be needed later on. End requirements for the VMs that will be reused are not given, so you may find yourself rebuilding a VM or adding disk later. It may be helpful to read the "Before you begin" sections for all of the chapters before you start building VMs so that you're not surprised.

One lab instructs you to set up a SQL 2005 server. The software is not provided for this and no instruction is given. The lab can be accomplished in other ways, but clear information is not provided.

I wish the labs had a little more detail in them. It's pretty easy to do something just a little bit wrong and have it not work and not know why. Since they build on each other an early mistake can end up forcing you to rebuild one or more VMs in later labs. It would be nice if they provided a script to quickly build the machines used in a chapter to the "before you begin" state, so that you could start at say chapter 17 without having to work through 15 and 16 first.

On the positive side, good coverage of the material and the labs provided valuable hands-on experience. There were a lot of errors, but nothing that I feel really impacted my understanding of the material. There is a PDF version of the book on the CD, and a MeasureUp exam-sim with over 200 questions that helps you check your knowledge and locate your weak areas. The MeasureUp also provides links to information and white-papers on the Microsoft site to explain concepts in the exam, providing very useful additional study materials.

Good book if you are the target audience.

This book covers a LOT of ground, and includes a lot screenshots and diagrams, as well as providing a brief primer on each concept it discusses. This is not a "got all scenarios covered" book. But what it does cover, it does excellently. If you're relatively new to the Windows server environment, you've found your book (well, your first book at least). Every time I've had a question about my installation, I've been able to find it quickly via the table of contents (haven't even had to crack the index yet - this book is very well organized).

If you're a Windows Server 2003 guru, much (but certainly not all) of the book will be irrelavent to you.

A wizard for the wizards

If you can't seem to follow the directions of the wizards that come with SBS 2003 (or want a second opinion to confirm that what you're actually reading in the wizard dialog box is, in fact, what is printed there), then this book is for you! Maybe that's what "companion" means - you can follow along with the wizard. But if you're looking for something more, well, it is pretty in hardcover and should look impressive (albeit dusty) on your shelf.
However, if you're the type of person who is admining an SBS server, then you're probably somewhat technically proficient and probably require resources beyond what is to be found in this book. I bought it for help with two problems I was having, which after visiting the SBS 2003 community newsgroups I discovered lots of other folks are having. This book does not address these issues (DNS and XP Pro issue, the Nov 24 Sharepoint issue) nor does it provide you with the information needed to solve them. I also reviewed some of the other more common types of probs folks had and I don't think I could have fixed them just from the info in this book, either.
Frankly, you're better off with Microsoft's Knoweldge Base articles and the SBS 2003 Community group. But it is pretty, thick and impressive looking. Its just all style, little substance.
Edit: (...) yes, I read it (some parts many times over, searching for an answer). I've been running some flavor of Novell, NT or Windows servers for 15 years and have high expectations for after market references. I don't need a walkthrough for a wizard (who does?) - I need help with problems that aren't covered by the wizards. Just go to the community boards on MS' site and read the responses from the MS techs to see what kind of info you need to solve production environment problems. That info is not in this book and you can get it for free from MS KB articles and the boards. Just being honest.

please come up with something better

After reading some of the other reviews I did not want to take the chance of ordering this book online, so I went in to the store to check it out for myself. I ended up not buying this book. The (negative) reviewers were right on. This book's format goes something like this: "To open a file follow these steps: Step 1 click "File". Step 2 click "Open".... ". It goes on and on like this. Many pages are wasted handholding the reader through steps that are obvious just by looking at the screen. I was hoping for something that would actually map out and explain how Small Business Server 2003 can be set up to efficiently run a small business (i.e. mine) and take the computing hassle off my hands. I implore these authors to go back and rewrite this book from scratch with the time-pressed small business owner in mind.

Book not thoroughly reviewed!

I agree witht the previous readers that the book was hastely done without any thought for quality! A lot of examples from the book differ drastically with the examples in the cd.(and even with the electronic copy of the book that came w/ the cd!)

I tried to salvage the situation by visiting MS Press for some errata announcements, but i was even more confused in the web-maze that they hyperlinked me to.... to no avail (surprise, surprise!)

If you have a limited budget on reference books... dont buy this one.

Exactly what you need if you're new to SSIS

If you're new to SSIS, this book is great. It covers the fundamentals in an easy, step-by-step way.

It is true that there are quite a few errors in the book. Before diving in you should visit the errata list on the website, but that should be the habit whenever working through a technical learning book. The exercises on the accompanying CD had quite a few problems, but nothing that couldn't be worked through.

As a surprise bonus, Chapter 12, "Data Warehouse Concepts", was an excellent introduction to the topic and it made me understand things I haven't been able to grasp before.

Altogether, a very satisfying book.

It was not that bad at all

if you are a first time visitor to SSIS, I think its a good book. It could definitely have been better but if you need to really practice on real life scenarious, it covers them well. There might be some instructions here and there which do not exactly mirror to the latest version and not sure if those were typos vs beta version but since the SSIS interface is so intuitive it's not as bad and this book really gets you upto speed in very short time.
If you are a totally new to the SSIS world, I would recommend it.

Average to disappointing

This is one of the few, if only, books available on the topic and a lot of it is decent; it's helped me out but it's also lacking. My biggest disappointment is in Chapter 9 regarding certificates. They're integral to making everything in the book work, but the treatment they give this is minimal, and forces you to search the internet for the information that you need.

The authors tell you where you need certificates, but essentially say nothing about requesting them, creating them, configuring them, using wildcards vs self-signed or other options, where you can use the same certificate on different servers, or not.

If this were a quality book, they would cover the topic in depth, as a few other blogs and websites have done. Instead, I'm spending hours of my time trying to find information from other sources.

In other words -- it is virtually useless.

I really should have read the existing reviews before buying this, but I did not so I am not returning it. And, I have on occasion read tech books with even less value.

This book contained a fair amount of random and disorganized information about how 2012R2 differed from 2008R2, but it lacked any specifics about how to set up or configure a virtual desktop or remote app, without that information, this becomes more of a philosophy texts than a technology book.

In other words -- it is virtually useless.

Good book, but one problem:

I like this book, but what's with the draft-mode printing? The text is so light compared to my other "Inside Out" books, I wonder if this is Microsoft's way of trying to save some money by printing in what looks like draft mode? I study late at night by a lamp, and I have to strain sometimes to continue reading hours at a time with this light print.

My other issue is the ebook, the font doesn't really resemble the book. It seems like the book is printed in Times New Roman (I could be wrong), but the ebook is printed in...something else that's not too easy on the eyes.

However, the content is excellent, and other than the printing of the book and ebook, I'm glad I made this purchase.

Excellent, a truly great resource to have!

Stanek once again is able to take technical topics and make them understandable. I have been running WinServer08 since beta one, and this book is an excellent reference for those of us already familiar with the Windows operating systems and newcomers alike.

It's written like all Stanek's others to deliver what I needed. It's so good I read the first few chapters straight through.

I have enjoyed reading Stanek's books for years. My understanding always has increased while reading his books. He understands practical IT in the real world and writes from experience and with a goal to increase our understanding.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone upgrading from previous versions and any current administrators.

Good so far...

I have only had this book for a couple of weeks and have already used this book a couple of times for my job, and so far, so good. I needed some information on hyper v and it got me through just fine. If you are looking for a great Windows Server 2008 guide, this one should fit the bill just fine.

The book is ok for the material it covers. The problem is that the book doesn't cover everything that is on the exam. I would have hoped that the "Microsoft Press" books would cover all the material required to pass a Microsoft exam. I guess not...

Very readable, great study guide

Like the other reviews said, it shouldn't be your single source of studying. Need another book or videos to compliment, especially if you have no hands on experience. However, I've read a lot of IT certification study guides and this by far the best. It's very readable and it explains things very clearly and thoroughly. It's also to the point(not longer than it needs to be) and laid out in a way that at least works very well for me.

In fact, although it doesn't cover everything, if you read and understand it thoroughly and do all labs, you probably have enough info to pass the test regardless.

Good Coverage of Most Exam Topics

Overall, this book provides a reasonable coverage of most of the exam requirements. Although some of the explanations tend to be confusing, and the command line tools are not adequately discussed, the presentation of the key concepts tends to align reasonably well.

The reality of the new generation of MS exams is you MUST work with the product to actually see and understand the product. There are a large number of practical labs that will help to reinforce the concepts, although I'm not certain how well this book will help someone with minimal Windows experience.

It is a good book, very helpful. I don't think you can implement this any other way other than getting this book. Google fails, book wins.

Watch typo on page 134-135. They have Period and Unit parameters reversed in this section.

This is one of the best technical (PKI or non PKI) books I layed my hands on

1- it is straight to the point, no sales kind of talk
2- it is very practical, you can apply almost verything in it, from troubleshooting, to upgrading etc.
3- it is very detailed (in PKI, details do matter)
4- it is comprehensive

Best reference for Windows PKI

This book is a significant and very worthwhile update on the 2003 version. The new edition is considerably larger than the previous one and covers the new features of Windows Server 2008 PKI including the new Advanced Cryptography Support (Suite B), OCSP and SCEP (among others).
The book also includes details of the Microsoft Certificate Lifecycle Manager (CLM/ILM 2007) product.
This book is the best reference for Windows PKI.

Book is directed at Web Aps and not desktop applications

This book has over 500 pages that cover Web Aps and only about 100 basic information pages on desktop applications. Screen shots were very light and very difficult to see. Web Aps are only available to people who have access to a share point server, SQL server, so that Access can be shared on the net. I do not recommend this book unless you are planning on writing Web Aps.
