Well written but shy of details where it really counts

Its Ok I think that some blocks of material are literally are 'copy and paste' from the previous Exchange 2010 book. What is less so is that the most important (or difficult) topics are not really discussed in good depth. Its all fine to fill the pages with info on how to run setup for Exchange or Client Access server works but I personally would look into the book to find information which is not that obvious. One of the most important and somewhat complicated topics is certainly a DAG and Site Resilience. Looking into the book hoping to find details on how this works and maybe to see a couple of scenarios (like 'if that happens thats how it would work') I only found the 'Tip' - details of this topic is somewhat complicated and we can't go in depth into it... so look on Internet or better hire a consultant with whom you can discuss the details of implementation ...". Thank you very much! And if you ARE a consultant I guess you better write the book yourself. After building a test environment and testing on your own all the possible scenarios. I guess thats fine approach but then why did I need this book?? At list omit the "Inside" from the title of the book, then.

Great Technical Reference!

Awesome Book. I was initially skeptical of the quality of content being the product was released within the year. I'm glad we no longer have to suffer reading the Exchange 2013 CHM file using a CHM reader on an iPad.

I believe Tony and his team did a great job of simplifying our lives as Exchange Architects, Engineers and Admins.

I took my life back!

I was a disorganized mess. My desk was piles and piles of clutter and things (important, time sensitive materials) got lost! It took me about a good year to get where I am now. I started with Michael Linenberger's Total Workday Control. Not a good place to start so I tried David Allen's book 'Getting Things Done'. It was a great start and gave me foundation. I then moved on to Sally McGhee's book Take Back Your Life! for Outlook 2003. Awesome! That helped me integrate everything into my real world computer life. Then I went back and reread Michael Linenberger's Total Workday Control, which now made a lot more sense and I used some of his ideas to create a 'custom' system for myself.
Finally, I bought this updated book of Sally McGhee's because I am using Outlook 2007 now. The material is basically the same, but tuned for Outlook 2007.

Now some people claim this book is a rip off of David Allen's book or that these books are all the same or they are boring. YES! and NO!

What you have to realize is that there are several ways of getting things done. All roads lead to Rome. I prefer the Sally McGhee method because it does not depend upon a plugin or extra software. It works with Outlook the way it is when you buy it and her methods translate over to my desk at home and work and since I am on the road...in my car. YES, the material is dry at times but so is work! lol

David Allen offers custom software as an add in for Outlook 2003 and 2007 that is Windows XP and Vista compatible and his extra software will cost you an EXTRA $70 folks! This could be very nice and efficient for some people. yet, there is a downside...the plug in only works with Outlook. If you use another email client, you have nothing. Another downside, you are now dependent upon that software instead of doing it yourself. If he stops making that software or it causes troubles and you have to remove it, you are now back to square 1 with no method of organizing. In other words, David Allen caught the fish for you, but McGhee wants to teach you to catch the fish yourself.

So, that is why I like McGhee's method. Yes, she basis it on Outlook but since there is no extra custom software involved to integrate into Outlook, you can translate the system to other mail clients. I also run Linux and I can use her methods in Evolution, Thunderbird, Kontact, etc. Also, it is NOT a 'blatant copy' of David Allen. They worked together and she openly discusses, reveals and discloses that info. She even quotes Mr. Allen in her book.

If you have Take Back Your Life! for Outlook 2003 and have been using it and are skilled in her methodology, you can make the transition to Outlook 2007 on your own probably. If you are new to this, and have Outlook 2007, this is a definite buy. Here on Amazon, it is only $17! What a deal! I bought a current copy for myself and to help others in my family.

She will probably come out with a SPECIAL EDITION like she did with her previous book that will include a CD, some pull out charts, etc. I would say, do not wait. Buy this book and get organized. I would also recommend the other books I have listed in my review too. I don't think just 1 book is enough! And this will take effort on your part. It took me a solid year to get really good. I fell off the wagon, got frustrated, reread the book, tweaked, learned, quit, failed, tried again, screwed up but eventually succeeded. I doubt many of you will get it going well in your first month...so don't quit! Keep trying and it will happen!

Take Back Your Copy

As I mentioned in my review of Take Back Your Life (TBYL) Special Edition, this book is a derivative work - basically a loosely-gathered compilation of ideas and techniques ranging from David Allen to Stephen Covey. It may be useful for people looking for a friendly, lightweight, introductory text to personal information management (PIM) centered on Outlook.

Since I was disappointed with the first edition, I sat down with this new edition to see if there were any improvements. I will say that a major flaw of first edition, the glaring lack of information concerning Meaningful Objectives (a core part of the system), has been addressed in this edition. This is handled by demoting Meaningful Objectives and adding something called Unifying Goals, which themselves are supported by Areas of Focus. Meaningful Objectives now roll up to Areas of Focus, which in turn support Unifying Goals.

This is certainly an improvement and perhaps it will be useful to you. However, the book does a poor job of helping you define any of these things, so the system kind of collapses under its own weight, in my opinion.

Other than this, and some other updates required because the authors are now working in Outlook 2007, the book is largely unchanged. Therefore, my opinion is largely unchanged. TBYL is a chatty volume with a low signal-to-noise ratio and a variety of vignettes designed to "humanize" the material. More often, they come across like testimonials and contribute more to padding the book than illustrating the point. TBYL also has the irritating habit of taking simple, workable terms (like those from GTD) and renaming them as part of the author's proprietary system. Contexts become Planning and Action Categories, Next Actions become Strategic Next Actions (SNAs) with no real advantage to the reader. Finally, compared to Micheal Linenberger, the authors have a mediocre understanding of how to use Outlook to its full potential.

As I wrote in my previous review, if you are serious about PIM or are a businessperson, I think the source material would serve you better. Start with Getting Things Done (GTD) to get a brilliant overview of how to address the overload in your life, followed by Total Workday Control 2nd edition (for Outlook 2007; use the 1st edition for earlier incarnations of Outlook) to fine tune that understanding. Finally, pick up 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to get the big picture, or as Allen calls it the "50,000 foot view level."

It works

After 80 or less emails in inbox with a total Outlook folder size of 350 MB.

Even after only reading 1/4th of this book there was an immediate change in my work life. After reading all of the book my personal life started to improve.

The only negative to this book is that it's so simple you'll wonder why you paid money for this information. However it's worth every penny you spend. I was even able to relay the concepts to other people to implement and these people saw an immediate improvement without even reading the book by just listening to what I could recite from my readings.

Horrible Exam Prep book

This book if full of valuable network information - almost none of which is asked by the exam questions. This is more than a little shocking since this is a Microsoft Press book, since MS press editions are usually competently written exam guides. However, the actual test, four long and complex case studies from which you must pick out network design factors based on hints in interviews, existing designs, network diagrams and future plans, has little in common with the content presented by this guide.

This book summarizes everything you need to know about setting up a Windows 2000 network, but doesn't say a thing about WHY to choose one type of design over another. Much of the exam is about choosing between alternative design factors, which this MS book does not mention one word of. It has hundreds of sub-topics entitled "making the decision" but those are in fact nothing but re-statements of the technical content and are not about decision making at all. It is highly unlike that anyone could pass the exam using this book, it is merely a summarization of the topics covered in the "core four" 70-210 through 70-217 MS exam guides.

Great study guide, but not a teaching tool

I just took and passed the MOS 2010 Excel exam with a 97.5% score. I believe that having this book to point out the previous gaps in my knowledge helped me to succeed on the exam.

However, having stated that, I feel compelled to warn people that this book is not a good teaching tool. The exercises at the end of each section only touch on cursory examples, and don't really help to teach "new" information. Basically, if you don't already know it, or don't have another resource to fill in the blanks, this book won't help you much.

Also, the exam coupon in the book is a bit of a joke. My local community college and even the local university charge less for the exam than Certiport's "discounted" price.

I don't want to make it seem like I'm bashing this book. I'm not. I certainly would not have achieved such a high score without it. But I highly recommend that it be used as a companion to a meatier text, such as the "New Perspectives On..." series.

Covers what the title says it will

I have had this book for a couple of weeks now and have worked through all of the Excel 2010 objectives. The book follows the objectives outlined by Microsoft for each certification exactly. All of the instructions are very clear and concise; there is very little fluff to wade through. Like any technical book there are bound to be a few errors; however all in all I have found very few. It would also make a good reference.

As far as teaching/demonstrating all of the objectives for the exam I think the book does a great job. I am knocking off one star though because what the book lacks is a method for telling whether a candidate is ready to pass the exam. I have gone through all the objectives but have no idea whether I could pass the test today or whether I need to review further.

EDIT: I took the first Excel exam today and passed. There were a couple of tasks in the test it asked me to do I was pretty sure the book had not covered but other than that I was able to complete the tasks. There are definitely more interesting and probably practical resources out there but if you are looking to take the tests this seems to be the book to get.

Very Basic

Got the book, decided to tackle the Outlook certification first. I've NEVER used outlook before last week (Thunderbird FTW).

After a week, sat for the test, Passed with a 967!*

I've sat through very tough Microsoft Tests before, this was not one of them. It's all a hands on live test. They give you a task, you do it. Straight forward.

Unlike some other Microsoft exams and press books (MCTS ones) the book actually covers what you're going to be tested on. If you know what's in the book, you know what's on the test.

*You're results may vary
EDIT: Passed PowerPoint with a 936. Started the 3rd, finished the 8th, that's 6 days from not knowing anything about PowerPoint (well, I knew very basic stuff. How to make a bad college presentation and what not) to professional.

I don't plan on getting the MOS Word or Excel Specialist certifications, I'm going straight to the expert certificate which is in a different book which I anticipate will cover the material just as well as this book did.

Another winner from Charlie Russel

Charlie Russel and Sharon Crawford have been putting out the gold standard in Small Business Server books since the first version of SBS shipped in the late 1990's. This latest effort is as comprehensive and accurate as their previous SBS titles, including not only direct information about installing and operating SBS, but also topics such as planning, security, migration, Hyper-V, data protection, and many others.

This book will save many SBS users from having to buy other books for related functions. For example, there are chapters on subjects like Group Policy, customizing SharePoint, and adding a Terminal Server. The authors' real world, hands-on experience in planning, implementing, and managing Small Business Server networks is clear in every chapter. Not limited to just the Small Business Server itself, this book gives the knowledge needed to manage every part of the small business's back office infrastructure.

This book is a valuable reference for anyone deploying Small Business Server Standard 2011, with or without the Premium Add-On, which is also covered in depth. I wouldn't be without it.

Running SBS 2011 at my church

I'm not a Windows Admin, but I am a "techie" kind of guy. More on the programming side though. But I'm responsible for IT at my church and recently set up SBS 2011 and created a true domain network. Since I've only experienced networking on the user side, I bought this and the pocket guide (probably overkill to get both) to have handy. I was able to find most everything I wanted. Its not quite written for someone at my level (probably intended for someone with more networking experience than me) but I am definitely glad I have it. With it and some internet searches I've been able to figure out everything I wanted to do. And I don't see any other book on the subject that would be the lower knowledge level that I am.

One example where this really helped: Setting up a group policy for network shares. I was able to see how to create a group policy to map network drives. So I've now got a "Staff" network drive as well as given the 5 employees their own personal network drive for storage and back up.

Very Basic Coverage of Windows SBS 2011

The book did not help me with all Windows SBS Server 2011 set up issues and problems, but it did help me with some. Setting up RAID in Windows SBS 2011 is very poorly covered, it does not explain how to set up different type of users and computers, how to make make and install master image on work stations etc. etc. And yet other simple issues are belabored too much.

Even though I have online Safari account, I could not get online access code to work. And if you are busy during the day on East Coast, calling their toll free number is very difficult because of their very limited Pacific time hours. In the book that I got, the two chapters are identical: connecting printers and computers to network - they both talk about connecting computers.

And DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION! The screen shot pictures are barely decipherable in the hard copy but they cannot be seen at all in the Kindle version. Did the authors ever bother to read their Kindle version before putting it up for sale?

Unfortunately, as of March 2012, there are very few books available on Windows SBS 2011, so you really have very limited choices.

I am an IT professional who likes to have a book to read and refer to. In an age of digital copies it is sometimes nice to have a book to highlight and mark pages. This is a good sized book for portability. The topics are covered well and offers step by step instruction as well as detailed descriptions of what you are doing.

Although this is not the best Windows Server 2012 R2 book, it offers enough important information to readers, which is all I need. I can then do further research on the topics I am interested in. Since I am already familiar with Windows Server, I don't really don't need to get a thick book to show me how to do a step-by-step process. I recommend this book.

A great book with a few minor gotchas

I really want to give this a 5-star review, as I believe that every single person administering any Microsoft server technology, and maybe anyone administering desktop operating systems, should own this book. It is one of the most thorough works on PowerShell that you'll find anywhere. It is, unfortunately, not perfect.

There is a strong list of positives that make this purchase more than worthwhile. First, you're getting a major work from Ed Wilson, who is undeniably among the best-of-breed of the PowerShell community. If you need a sample of his easy-to-follow writing style, you'll find hundreds on TechNet's "Hey, Scripting Guy!" blog. There is no doubt that this book imparts authoritative knowledge.

Second, this material is truly comprehensive. I doubt there are any stones in the PowerShell quarry that are left unturned by this tome.

Third, the insights provided by the "Notes from the Field" sidebars are truly invaluable. They are real-world solutions to real-world problems provided by real-world experts. There is a single exception to this, and that is the blatant advertisement from a SAPIEN VP. It's a pure product pitch that adds nothing to comprehension or the spirit of the material. That's not why I dinged this book a star, though. As unwelcome as it was to find a pop-up ad disguised as useful supplementary information partway through the book I paid for, the rest of it is too worthwhile for this to be anything more than a speed-bump irritant. I do hope that it's either the last of its kind from MS Press or that purchase prices can be subsidized by these product placements.

Now, for the reasons I docked a star. None of these on their own are that big of a deal, but cumulatively I think they hurt the book's appeal and reach.

First, the title and the material aren't well-aligned. I bought this book because of the author's name, not the title. Had a lesser-known author produced a book with this title, I either would have skipped it or waited for a super-sale price. "Best Practices" evokes images of lists and checkboxes and cheat sheets and processes outside of development and things of that nature. Best practices are certainly a prominent feature of this book, but they are hardly a cornerstone topic. In a few places, it felt like the author wrote out some in-depth, brilliant, and truly helpful material, and then sort of tacked on something about "best practices" because it was something he was supposed to do.

Second, the organization leaves something to be desired. I read this book straight through, but along the way I was careful to use small sticky notes to mark anything that I thought I might ever want to revisit. I highly recommend that you do this as well. If you don't, then you are unlikely to ever again stumble across that little nugget that you are certain is in there somewhere. As an example, if you remember that there's a spot on using WMI to read the registry, and go to section 1 where there is all sorts of talk about using WMI, you'll be out of luck. You have to go to the "Identifying scripting opportunities" chapter instead. I would say that this is a pervasive condition throughout the book. Additionally, the "Notes from the Field" sidebars are completely unindexed, and often don't have enough in common with the material around them to be easily locatable. And of course, like most technical books of this nature, the index isn't all that great anyway. I do acknowledge that organization is a problem that's common to just about any technical book of size because so many things can fall under so many categories, but I feel that the problem was unnecessarily aggravated in this book by trying to shoehorn the content into the "best practices" motif.

Third, some of Ed Wilson's personally-designed scripts are referenced by scripts in this book without preamble. One of these, New-Underline, is given in Chapter 14 under an unrelated topic, but called by scripts in earlier chapters. Since the normative practice for custom PowerShell scripts is to follow a standard naming convention, it's not going to be obvious to some readers that the scripts they are dutifully copying are failing because they haven't yet seen a necessary supporting script. This is probably a very minor issue for most readers, but it seemed to be worth a mention as I'd think that as a "best practice", it would be good to note places in a script where other non-built-in scripts are necessary.

Finally, there were a few places where I felt that the motifs of "best practices" weren't well-served by the material. As an example, comment-based help makes a late appearance, following a great many scripts that just use blocks of comments. I also found that this book's advice on using "filter {}" (as opposed to "function {}") seemed to be in direct opposition to the advice given in the book "PowerShell In Depth: An Administrator's Guide" without any way for non-experts to reconcile these differences. There were a few other points that I'm fairly certain have been superseded by newer practices, but I unfortunately did not bookmark them and don't now recall what they were. My real point here is that this book should be read for PowerShell knowledge much more so than for PowerShell best practices.

Overall, I think these negative points are dramatically outweighed by the positives of this book. It is well-worth the sticker price and is likely to quickly become a well-worn member of your library.

Great book to improve your PowerShell skills.

The book was released late January 2014 and is the most recent book about PowerShell that has been released to my knowledge. This means it includes PowerShell 4.0, Desired State Configuration DSC and references to Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2.

In my opinion the book was very well written and contains a good mix of theory, sample scripts and "notes from the field" from many PowerShell specialists. The sample scripts are available for download at Technet Script Center.

The best practices that are described in the book are very recognizable and I had already adopted many of them based on the many great blog posts by the community. In the book they are all bundled and well explained including examples. Where the book really shines though in my opinion is that it describes how PowerShell is used in real-life, how it relates to many other processes within a company and what you need to consider.

I think this book is a must-have for anyone working with PowerShell. For those starting with PowerShell, I recommend first reading the books "Learn Windows PowerShell In A Month Of Lunches" and "Learn PowerShell Toolmaking In A Month Of Lunches" and then read this book.

Great deployment book

This book is a very good HOWTO book on deploying a secure wireless network.
This book starts out with a description of the technologies used, like one of the previous reviewers has posted, it doesn't compare in contrast the two Windows authentication techniques available, but does a descent job describing the technology. You will also note that Microsoft Press didn't intend this book to be used for Evaluation or Skill Building which such comparison might be considered.
Moving on to part II, it starts with a guide on best practices for the deployment of wireless access points, it then moves onto it's deployment guides.
This is where this book sets itself apart from other HOWTO books that assume that you are deploying it in an large enterprise, or assume that you are going to deploy in a small office, this book gives you more choices.
First two deployment scenarios are for large enterprise, including a case study on the Microsoft roll out of Wi-Fi, they also give you a simple small office deployment scenario with no servers. Finally at the very end of the book, there is a lab deployment scenario (ie an enterprise type deployment with the fewest servers possible).
Also including are techniques to securing offer public, or semi-public wireless internet access on the same wireless network, without allowing them access to your network resources (other than the internet line and associated services).
This book rounds up part III with chapters on trouble shooting wireless clients, access point and the server parts of your wireless network.
Overall I recommend this book to anyone that needs to do an actual deployment of a wireless network, with Windows, or would like to learn the fundamentals of deploying a secure wireless network with a Windows infrastructure. I will be using this book as I deploy my companies wireless network in the coming months.
If this book went in depth on comparing the authentication and encryption techniques I would have given it 5 stars since it would be the perfect book on deploying secure wireless network with Windows.

weak wireless book

This is first Microsoft Press book that I can't recommend to anyone. The author is probably well versed in the technology but his ability to fully explain to the average reader is lacking. Chapter 2 should have expanded to explain the strength and weakness of each of the Authentication, Encryption, and Data Integrity processes. If you don't understand the security issues that each of these processes deals with you will be lost very quickly. Each Microsoft operating has different levels of support and setting for setting up a wireless client configuration - the book blows past this. I have found more information on the Cisco site.

excellent info for what I needed - help on 71-298

I was studying for the 71-298, design Security for Server 2003 and needed Microsoft fast info, so gave me all info as well as a good lab to set up for a wireless lab. Great book! We be setting up the lab at home next year to get experience in the new technology.
Needed wirless, security info.
I am taking it this Saturday Oct 4 2003, in Maryland as a beta tester.
