Nice Overview Of SQL Server 2012

This is a nice overview talking about the basics of SQL Server 2012 from the DBA side of things and services like Reporting Services and the like. It's a short book that is aimed at DBA or people looking to learn the nuances of the new version. This is NOT an overview of programming for SQL Server 2012 so make sure the right audience is picking this book up.

Does a great job covering all the new features

This is an excellent tome for all the new goodies included in Microsoft SQL Server 2012.

SQL Server 2012 included many new features, all of which are covered in this book. Data Quality Services (DQS), Column Store Indexes, the new tabular SSAS model, and semantic search, to name just a few.

In addition the enhancements are also covered, such as to the engine and security. But it also hits on other areas, such as MDS (Master Data Services), SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) and SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services).

Best of all, it's a good read. Not the boring drudgery you find in many computer books, the writing is lively and personal.

As another reviewer mentioned, this book is really just an overview of the [new] features of Sql Server 2012. It is not necessarily bad, but more of an overview and/or sales pitch. If you are interested, you can get the electronic version of this book for free though - and that price is hard to beat.

Decent, just DON'T buy it for the "Free Practice Test"

Well, I took the exam (Word Expert) and passed. The book did cover most of what was on the exam. One recommendation I have for fellow MOS-ers is to know every part of any dialog box the book discusses in explanatory steps. In other words, even if it doesn't explain what a particular button does, you should explore it yourself, even briefly, as knowing these inside and out will really help. Also, the book is task-basead, just like the exam, so on that point it is really helpful. Best of luck to you!

[Original Post] The book does a decent job of reviewing the programs. I do wish that it actually demonstrated what to do with a particular type of doc once you completed the practice exercise for it, e.g. after it tells you how to create an XML doc, and walks you through the steps, you are instructed to simply "close the document without saving it." It'd be nice to see some real-life examples of what I might do with what I'd just created (practical application helps me to retain material better).

One thing that has really left me w/a sour taste in my mouth is that the book, on the cover, advertises that by purchasing it the reader receives a "free practice test from MeasureUp--a $40 value!" Unfortunately the practice test offered by MeasureUp is for Office 2000, NOT 2003!! (??) (Yes, I checked with MeasureUp tech support and they confirmed they have not yet created 2003 practice tests.) IMHO this is false advertising.

With that caveat, as I said, the book is decent enough. The material it covers is written/organized well. I haven't taken an exam yet, so I can't speak to how much it helped with the actual exam. To be continued, I guess...

Good, but could have much better.

I debated about giving this book three or four stars. It does have several great qualities, but I final decided to just give it three. If I had reviewed this before take the certification tests I might have given it four, but I've just finished taking the tests and I believe the book only deserves three. The book is a great review of all the office products, but I believe it could do more to help us to actually pass the certification tests.

The book does provide an excellent review of all the products, so if you just want to review then I recommend it highly. If you do not already know Microsoft Office, I do not believe this book will be much help to you because I believe the information is too packed, but if you're reviewing or updating your knowledge it should serve you well. It touches on most everything, and the disk has tons of practice files and there is a practice at the end of each section. I rate it high for all that.

But I have just taken different college level classes on all the office 2003 applications. And I wanted a book to help me get certified on them. Believe me the certification tests are not easy and simply making an "A" on your course work, which I did, will not assure you of passing them. The free practice test from MeasureUp was of some help (finding my way in the MeasureUP web site took some doing, but the test did have the look and feel of the real thing) in that it let me see what I could expect; it alone might be worth the price of the book. But after taking the real tests I realize this book did not help me much. I did work through the whole book, and I feel that I know all the programs well but I failed the Excel Expert and the Access test. I did pass the Excel Core and the Word test (the Word test was by far the easiest).

There is one change that I think could have made the book a truly great winner and would helped me a lot. The practices at the end of each section, and there are a lot of them, simply tell you what do, taking you through it step by step. It would have been much better if each practice had presented you with a problem in the same format as the certification tests, giving you a chance to work them yourself, then given the step by step solution.

If you want help passing the test you might want to look at the disk on "shop.certiport.com." I only recently discovered them and have not used them but they look like they might be a lot of help.

Per the readme file on the CD the information to access the test is either printed on a sticker on the inside back cover or on the CD itself. Bull!!! The inside back cover is BLANK and the CD has a useless MicroSoft URL on it.

Of course you have to break the seal on the CD to find this out. Once the seal is broken, you can't return the book. Just lovely.

Additionally, there is no information to reach MeasureUp! anywhere in the book or on the CD. The book refers you to MicroSoft's website. There you will find NO information directing you to the practice test supposedly included with the purchase of this book - only to practice tests you have to pay for.

I bought this book based on the review that stated a 2003 practice test is included. Someone care to post exactly WHERE (is any test for that matter) before anyone else loses money on this???

Good foundation but rough on the Edges

I found the book insightful but the examples and associated lab materials were a major letdown. From the book's back cover: "Get Microsoft Visual C# and XML code samples on the Web". Note: No url is given.

When I found the book's Microsoft site (it is from MSPress) I get this link; [...]. It is only a single line correction with no hints of where to get the book's code samples from!

The lack of samples was quite frustrating as some chapters make explicit reference to sample projects.

The books itself is well written and very solid on theory.

I was very selective on picking out a book on SharePoint. I needed a crash course and this book provided it. I hired consultants to help me with my project and they noticed it on my desk and mentioned how helpful it was for them as well.

Great new SharePoint book by Ted and Dan

The SharePoint book that I have been waiting for the most has finally arrived. Back when I first heard that Ted Pattision and Daniel Larson were teaming up to write a SharePoint book, I got pretty excited. I knew these guys would have a knock-out book for SharePoint developers, and I'm happy to say I was right.

With this book, you will learn how to:

Doesn't cover important topics for general Windows Apps

This book is about building Windows Store Apps for Windows 8. It's not about learning C# for more general purposes. Avoid this book if you wish to write code for Windows 7, Vista or general support for .NET 4 & 4.5, or if your goal is web development. When it comes to covering important topics like multi-threading, Async methods, Data Binding, and database, those chapters limit themselves to full screen Windows 8 apps.
If your goal is to do something useful with C#, like file I/O, Graphics, Security, Networking, etc., this book doesn't touch those subjects.
My goal was web development. Since C# is grabbing the attention of the web development community I assumed this book would having something to say about it.... not a word. The word 'web' can't even be found in the index. The Web templates that come with Visual Studio are ignored. If you can limit your users to Windows 8 or are willing to limit your market to full screen Windows 8, then this book might help. I'm very disappointed in this book.

Excellent primer on C# 2012 for Win 7 and Win 8

I've been programming in other languages so I have a good base to start from but this book does an excellent job of introducing me to C#. It is very easy to follow, they build on examples well, and introduce the object-oriented concepts well. I used to do a lot of simple programming 'glue' to make things work but this book broadens my understanding considerably.
It's a great way to learn C#. It covers programming issues for both the Win 7 and Win 8 bi-polar mode (desktop vs full-screen app). It also gives a nice introduction to Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 so that you learn the basics of debugging and using the editors and environment which can be very intimidating at first (I know it was for me!).
It covers a general topic in each chapter like methods, scope, objects and gives a real simple easy to understand definition and real world explanation of the concepts. This makes it very easy to follow.
I highly recommend this book.

Best book on C# so far.

This book is great. I'm an experienced vb.net programmer and am transitioning to C#. However, I needed to learn, for the first time, about Delegates and event handling. The other book I had "C# black book" did not explain the subject very clearly. This book however, made this complicated subject understandable. My new found clarity on Delegates and events made me decide to check the book for another subject I've always found unclear - Generics. This book makes this subject clear too.

I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to because I'm so impressed at how well it explains the things I've needed to learn from it. I highly recommend this book.

I passed the PMP exam in one try with this book and cd alone.

The books is really good. I also have the PMBOK, but i basically just went through the glossary and main subjects.
This book was way easier than the PMBOK book to follow since the PMBOK is basically a reference book.
Anyways, the best thing about this book is actually the CD program.

Make sure you take the practice exam in CUSTOM mode and do one topic at a time.
The reason is redundancy on one topic group really makes you remember easier.

Here are my test tips to pass:
Approach the exam as if you are writing a paper.
So start with a plan, outline, then fill in the meat.
So I would make a schedule (in fact schedule the exam according to your schedule, it forces you to study).
Study the main topics and make sure you understand it.
The main topics are the knowledge areas and its processes: e.g. integration mgt, scope mgt, risk mgt, and all of the processes within it.
Then take the custom exam one topic at a time. Then retake it again, until you get a 90% or higher.

Essential for PMP preparation

I really like the book and testing software that make up the PMP Training Kit. Overall I felt it was a good value purchase, the content was both accessible and relevant.

It's designed for people preparing for the PMP exam but would be useful if you are learning about project management in general and would probably be great for CAPM preparation too (it's aligned with the PMBOK Guide 5th edition). The real world examples in the text ground the theory and helped me examine my own experiences against the PMI framework. The practice test CD really suited my learning style and is a great resource that built up my confidence and allowed me to target my learning - this feature exceeded my expectations. I'm looking forward to getting the PMP Rapid Review, also authored by Sean Whitaker.

About the Author

Carl is a principal content project manager at Microsoft. In this role Carl oversees development of assistance material, UI text and web content for a variety of V.1 products and services. Carl also teaches software user assistance in the Human Centered Design and Engineering department at the University of Washington. Carl is a graduate of the Master's program in Technical Communication at the University of Washington and is certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP) by the Project Management Institute. Tim's first connection with Project began as a product support professional at Microsoft, starting with Project 3.0. Good hands-on begging book on Project

If you are looking for a simple, easy way to teach yourself Project 2010 Step by Step by Carl Chatfield and Timothy Johnson is a good choice. Step by Step (SBS) is a series of textbooks published by Microsoft for learning the applications in the Microsoft Office Suite. The format is hands-on with brief explanations of concepts followed by step by step exercises demonstrating key tasks. Most students can work through the book and its exercises in about 2-3 days of solid study. Disciplined students often find a chapter-a-day to be a reasonably workable pace.

You can very effectively skip through the text taking a chapter at a time to learn specific tasks. However, don't plan on using the SBS series for reference book or quick how-to guide. In Project 2010 SBS you will cover the core skills needed for using Project as a standalone application but helps are sprinkled throughout on using Project Server. SBS assumes the reader is already comfortable with the computer and has some experience with the Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010 Ribbons.

Project 2010 SBS is a great book for learning the application and does contain many tips and tricks on the project management methodology. However, SBS is not a book on methodology. The brief appendix "Short Course in Project Management" is helpful but not a replacement for training and experience in project management. While the SBS series is best suited for individual study it can be used in the classroom in a pinch. I have used SBS series texts for several applications in classes but they are far from the best option. The price point of around $19.79 on Amazon is appealing for classrooms. The new appendix on using SBS in the classroom is unfortunately not at all helpful for an experienced instructor.

Great content, poor printing quality

Content is great - contains much more than just how to use Project 2010, but how to manage projects in general. This also includes example spreadsheets, templates, etc.

Was very let down by quality of printing though. Book is Printed On Demand (POD), and is very easily recognizable as that. Blacks vary between pages, resolution not high enough for font used with fine strokes becoming messy. Already had the e-book and decided I wanted the real thing, but honestly in this instance I would have been happy sticking with the e-book.

This book is 745 pages of reference, broken to 6 sections described as:

Part One: Project Management - like a mini-manual on Project Management basics, explaining what projects are, why managing them is a good idea, how to pick projects and obtain support, and quick tour of planning a project.

Part Two: Project Planning, More than Creating a Schedule - starts with a quick test drive of MSProject, then goes thru aspecs of planning including breaking work down, estimating work and duration, assigning resources to tasks and setting up a budget, then how to refine a schedule and prepare it for the execution phase of the project.

Part Three: Projects in Action - explain how to track progres, evaluate that progress, correct course and manage changes, generate reports and steps at the end of the project.

Part Four: Project Power Tools - talk about how to work on more than one project and how to share data with other (Microsoft) programs and people.

Part Five: Customizing Project- explains how to customize MS Project confguration, including the ribbon, use templates, and use macros.

Part Six: Appendices - three appendixes provide guides on how to install Project, reverence to hwlp resources, and a quick review of keyboard shortcuts.

I appreciated the frequently inserted boxes of tip on themes like "Tools of the Trade", "Up to Speed", Reality Check", etcetera to help clarify the meaning and usage.

About the Author
Scott A. Helmers is a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) for Microsoft Visio and is the primary Visio expert at Experts-Exchange.com. He has helped companies create custom Visio add-ins to enhance organizational efficiency and employee productivity, and has taught thousands of people how to use technology more effectively.

He is Vice President of Product Planning and Support at the Harvard Computing Group, a software and consulting firm that helps clients understand and implement business process solutions. Scott is a co-inventor of TaskMap (www.taskmap.com), a Visio add-in that anyone can use to document and improve all of the important aspects of any business process.

Scott has worked with clients in Afghanistan, Egypt, India, Ireland, Jordan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Canada, and the United States on projects involving knowledge management, specification of new IT systems, process mapping and redesign, and technology training. In addition, he has been an Adjunct Professor at both Northeastern University and Boston University.

Scott is the author of three previous books: Microsoft Visio 2013 Step by Step (Microsoft Press, 2013), Microsoft Visio 2010 Step by Step (Microsoft Press, 2011), and Data Communications: A Beginner's Guide to Concepts and Technology (Prentice-Hall, 1989). He also contributed Chapter 9, "Visio and Visio Services," to Business Intelligence in Microsoft SharePoint 2013 by Norm Warren, Mariano Neto, Stacia Misner, Ivan Sanders, and Scott Helmers (Microsoft Press, 2013).
