The Elements of User Experience: User-Centered Design for the Web, by Jesse James Garrett

Smart organizations recognize that Web design is more than just creating clean code and sharp graphics. A site that really works fulfills your strategic objectives while meeting the needs of your users. Even the best content and the most sophisticated technology won't help you balance those goals without a cohesive, consistent user experience to support it.

But creating the user experience can seem overwhelmingly complex. With so many issues involved-usability, brand identity, information architecture, interaction design-it can seem as if the only way to build a successful site is to spend a fortune on specialists who understand all the details.

The Elements of User Experience cuts through the complexity of user-centered design for the Web with clear explanations and vivid illustrations that focus on ideas rather than tools or techniques. Jesse James Garrett gives readers the big picture of Web user experience development, from strategy and requirements to information architecture and visual design. This accessible introduction helps any Web development team, large or small, to create a successful user experience.

From the Author
I really love the web. I really hate bad web sites. One day I was sitting on the back patio of Carbon IQ with Jeff Veen, and mentioned both of these sentiments. I said, "Dang it, if people would just slow down and do a few blueprints before they made web sites, they'd all improve 200%. I mean, it doesn't take that much -- you just talk to some users, do a couple card sorts, and blooie! a better web site." And he said, "You should write a book." Well, it's a year later, and I have written a book. My brain is now sitting in your hands, between these covers. I still spend a lot of time online -- so far I found a career, a husband, a car, a publisher, and many tickets to exotic locales all online. I love the web -- it has the power to change people's lives. I still hate bad web sites though, and now I'd like to encourage you to read this book and go make some good ones. Please. I'll swing by when you're done.

Truly and INTRODUCTION to User Experience
By Joe McCann
As a professional in the UX industry, I found this book to be incredibly elementary and I did not really "learn" that much from the book. HOWEVER, I am not discounting the book's content. If you are a Business Analyst or someone new in the field, there can be a lot gained from this book.

It is a short, quick read with plenty of illustrations and a decent typeface size. From my perspective, it gets 3 stars. But if you are truly new to this, I could see it getting 4.5.

More about teamwork than the user experience
By Trevor Burnham
This is an abstract, conceptual book with very few concrete examples. As someone designing a website as a solo project, I didn't find it useful. I would recommend this book only if you're managing a large team and need a framework to coordinate your designers.

I did enjoy the diagrams, which employ Garrett's unique (and sensible) style. You can find out more about this "visual vocabulary for information architecture" at Garrett's website.

A book for everyone invloved in creating a user experience
By Peter Emmett
This is simply the best book I have read so far about creating a great user experience. It written so that everyone can read it and understand what is being said. Even your manager can handle this book :-)
The simple yet effective and in depth solutions offered in this book will substantially help improve any and every web site being built or that is already out there.
My only suggestion is that Jesse's or another web site should evolve to supplement this with more practical examples for different situations.

Must Have
By Grant Fritchey
This will be a standard book on most DBA's desktops. Itzik Ben-Gan of Solid Quality Learning has taken the Advanced T-SQL course that he teaches and turned it into a fantastic book.

The first two chapters cover the logic of query processing and what physically occurs when you run a query. Very early on Itzik establishes a practice of defining a problem or a question about T-SQL and then spends time working through the solution. This approach carries through the entire book. This not only allows the user to see the problem solving approach in action, but enables the user in pursuing the solutions themselves. Itzik takes the time to lay out a very detailed methodology for identifying and tuning problem queries from the server, through the database, down to the query that's causing the problems. From these foundation chapters he explores topics such as Subqueries and Table Expressions, Joins and Set Operations, Aggregating and Pivoting Data, Top and Apply, Data Modification and finally Graphs, Hierarchies and Recursive Queries.

The greatest thing about the book is that Itzik really explores his solutions. He walks the user into a mind set that accepts only set based operations as the norm for data access. He shows multiple solutions to many of the problems and outlines where and how those solutions differ. This book acts as a good mechanism for actually learning the details of how to use T-SQL withing SQL Server 2005. He also points out where there are differences from 2000 and supplies 2000 only solutions to a lot of the problems, which can help those that need to maintain two code bases. He regularly uses and addresses 2005 functionality so there is zero indications of this being a 2000 book warmed over for re-publication.

Make no mistakes here. This is a high-end book. If you're just getting started in T-SQL, you may want to start out somewhere else. If, after getting down the concepts of SELECT.. FROM... WHERE... GROUP BY... ORDER BY, etc., then come back here and learn what happens and the right reasons to do the right things with the scripts that you write.

I work primarily as a database developer, doing database design from logical models and business requirements and then developing stored procedures, etc., for accessing data from those databases. This kind of information is absolutely vital to doing the best job I can. I think I was predisposed to like this work, but I've actually been picking it up during the day to refer back to points that were unclear to me or that I want to better communicate to others, especially from the first two chapters.

An excellent contribution to the "Inside-SQL" series
By Matthew Bryde
This is the 2nd book of the 4 part "Inside-SQL" series, with each book I imagine, appealing to a different reader. Having a programming background, I enjoyed this book more than the first in the series ("The Storage Engine"), which on it's own is also an excellent book.

As mentioned in other reviews, this book is definitely not for beginners. The authors assumes a basic level of SQL knowledge from the reader as he launches into complex Transact-SQL examples - unlike most books which start the reader with simple SQL examples and progress through to complex ones.

While reading this book, it was easy to compare it's contents with Ken Henderson's popular "A Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL", with the latter book becoming more and more outdated by the improvements in Transact-SQL since it was published. If you're a fan of Henderson, you will quickly become a fan of Itzik.

A benefit of this book is that unlike most SQL 2005 books, this is not an update on SQL 2000 material, but instead starts at the 2005 level. The author focuses on the new syntax introduced in SQL 2005, and then, moves onto older SQL 2000 syntax and compares both the complexity and the performance differences between the two. This itself is invaluable to those of use that code in Transact-SQL and feel more comfortable using the "old ways". This book highlights how the new syntax is in fact simpler and more efficient - we just need to take the time and effort to understand and become familiar with the new language changes.

The book starts by discussing the logical processing of a SELECT statement, which helps the reader to understand the hows and whys of writing a query. I finally understood why I can't use an expression's alias in a WHERE BY or GROUP BY clause (as the SELECT line is one of the last parts of the statement to be processed). Throughout the book, the author often defines a problem and allows the reader to formulate an appropriate solution. He then reveals MULTIPLE solutions and explains why each is good or bad. The book ends with a selection of "logic puzzles" that test the reader's ability to solve logical problems. This was both fun and informative.

After reading this book, I found myself changing the way I constructed SQL queries at work - for the better!

Learning from the Greats
By David R. Steele
I found the book "Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2005: T-SQL Querying" a very good guide to the in's and out's of SQL querying from the standpoint of a student, but, the way the book is written, it does not "low-brow" anyone more experienced. It is just the sort of book that would appeal and enlighten anyone who is willing to put the print to work and develop bona fide, time-tested expertise in querying Microsoft SQL Server 2005. In other words, it is an investment in knowledge that pays big dividends.

Absolutely packed with useful information. Not just for sysadmins
By Colin Brown
Windows Powershell is still a relatively new language although more and more system administrators are now looking into it. Previously administrators either had the choice of VBScript or straight command line batch files/scripts which were either fairly limiting in what they could do or were fairly complex in how to actually do things. Powershell now gives administrators the power and flexibility of the .net framework as well as being quite easy to write extremely powerful scripts. With the power and flexibility that Powershell gives administrators comes a responsibility however.

Windows PowerShell 2.0 Best Practices assumes that you already have an understanding of Powershell, it's not a book on learning Powershell. The introductory chapters however do give you a brief overview of what you need to run Powershell in your environment and goes through the installation and configuration process before delving into some of the powerful capabilities that Powershell allows administrators including how to access and use various native Win32 COM objects like the Win32_Process classes.

Any administrator will sooner or later need to work with ADSI, the active directory service Interfaces and therefore a chapter has been dedicated to dealing with ADSI through Powershell, from creating users and groups to creating computer accounts and exporting statistics on your active directory environment to spreadsheets for reporting.

The book is divided into 5 main sections. The main sections are an introduction to Powershell, Planning, Designing, Testing and Deploying and finally Optimizing your cmdlets and scripts. Each section is split into chapters detailing specific parts of the overall section theme, for example under Planning there are chapters on identifying scripting opportunities, configuring your scripting environment, avoiding scripting pitfalls etc. Although this is a best practices book, there are numerous examples within each chapter showing how to best take advantage of Powershell 2 and numerous sidebars giving additional information, anecdotes or highlighting particularly important areas.

The appendixes in the book are crammed full of information from listing out all the included cmdlets that ship with Powershell 2 and a brief description of each to listing important and useful classes that you may need to work with from the .Net Framework, COM objects and WMI objects.

Weighing in at a tad over 700 pages, this is a hefty tomb chock full of useful advice, tips and tricks and information to let you take full advantage of Powershell 2. Although aimed mainly at system administrators, developers will find a lot of useful information contained within these pages and can start writing scripts to help automate some of their daily activities. Sometimes the writing can feel a little disjointed however this does not detract from an overall excellent book.

A great PowerShell V2 book
By Thomas F. Lee
Ed Wilson, aka Microsoft's The Scripting Guy, has written a number of PowerShell books (for MS Press). This book, Windows PowerShell 2.0 Best Practices, is one I've been slowly reading through. Although this book is a couple of years old, the advice and guidance it contains is still excellent.

The book is divided up into 5 sections: Introduction, Planning, Designing, Testing and Deploying, Optimizing. In effect, the book is divided around the scripting lifecycle. The Planning section looks at identifying the opportunities for scripting within your organisation. The Designing section shows you how to design scripts that meet your business needs based on the features of PowerShell V2. As I said the book is based on V2 - but there area number of features that, at least in my experience, a lot of users simply do not know. The fourth section of this book covers both testing (something every script needs!) and deployment (how your users get your scripts). The final section looks at optimising your scripts.

The book, like many MS Press books, contain side bars from folks in the industry. These sidebars provide the voice of experience and give weight to the ideas Ed is promoting. I like these as they provide counterpoint to the book itself.

This is not an easy book to just skim through. Ed writes for adults, and the examples are rich - it took me literally months to finish reading this as I read a little of the book each night. I found that I had to read some pages several times to enable me to distill the key points the book is making.

If you are new to PowerShell, then this would be a good book to read as it provides great background to PowerShell V2 as well a wealth of scripts you could use in your environment. If you have PowerShell skills, then this book can give you new perspectives on PowerShell in the enterprise as well as show you a number of tricks you can leverage in your own code.

I give this book 5 stars!

Learning Powershell is made easier
By Willie E Campbell Jr
I purchased this book to learn more about Powershell 2.0 and was very impressed. This book covers some of the basics and really offers a great model for creating Powershell scripts. I'm new to Powershell and I found this book to be very easy to grasp and had many examples to learn from. Excellent Book for anyone wanting to get serious and learn Powershell.

Correction: Readers DO get a free digital copy
By Steven Weiss
To make a few key points about the preceding review:
1. Microsoft Press & O'Reilly Media are in a strategic alliance to produce Microsoft Press books and other resources. There are still lots and lots of people working at Microsoft who are at the center of Microsoft Press publishing.
2. Anyone who buys a print edition of this book gets a free, downloadable, fully searchable PDF of the book. You just follow the directions on a voucher card in the back of the book, register (completely free) at Safari Books Online, use the unique code on your scratch-off voucher card, and you'll be able to view the book online or download the book.
3. The link book's exercise files are here: [...]indeed, some readers have found the link descriptions a little hard to read; we're working to fix that in upcoming titles and in reprints).
4. The reason we replaced having CDs in books with making material available online is: bundling CD-ROMs means those media can get scratched and cracked, and even removed from books while at the store (not the case with Amazon, of course). Also, system configuration issues can get in the way. Someone sits down with their new book, the CD doesn't work, they're frustrated. We've switched to making ancillary files available online, which has been deeply appreciated by most of our readers (which isn't to de-legitimize the opinions of those who'd still prefer a bundled CD, of course.) As well, it makes it possible to update those files as necessary throughout the entire life of a book.
Hoping this helps,

Not for the Novice
By Guy Crouchback
I learned Lotus 123 in the mid-80's and was writing fairly sophisticated programs using its macro language a few years later. This wasn't a hobby; it put bread on the table. At some point I (and everyone) moved to Excel. I never developed the skill with Excel that I had with 123 (I was a "boss" by then), but I was competent enough for routine recordkeeping and short programming.

Now in retirement, I find I must update to X2010 - having missed several program upgrades. I find the Office 2010 program vastly different from what I used in the past, and so I ordered Microsoft's book "Step by Step." That title suggests, "OK, we'll take this one step at a time, from the beginning." But the book is nothing of the sort: by page 25 or 30, the reader is already confronted with what I'd call Advanced (or at least specialized) Topics. Information on such elementary things as changing the settings that were once found in Tools > Options is not explained (indeed, Tools isn't there anymore; most of such stuff now seems to be found within the File menu option).

The Tools menu having departed, it seems the Help menu has as well. The program offers a "Help" of sorts, but it's neither consistent nor robust across the range of topics. All of which suggests the need for good basic books for beginners or those making a "deep upgrade." This is not such a book.

08. Alternative Data Sets
09. PivotTables

A Good Overview of IA
By R. Walling
I'm a web developer and have always been fascinated with the interaction of humans and web sites, and this book does an excellent job of explaining the subject in simple terms while addressing more complex issues, as well. I read this book back in 2003 when it was first published and, not being an information architect, was happy to find it spoke to my level of knowledge.

With chapter titles like "First Principles: Some rules of thumb, and some thumbing of the rules" and "Gurus and Rules: In which some people like to boss you around, when we know that's my job," the book entertains as it educates, and leaves you with a comrehensive set of steps & guidelines when designing a site from scratch or improving an existing one. Numerous case studies, screen shots and diagrams also break up the monotony of what could otherwise be a boring subject.

If you're new to IA or are looking to expand your knowledge of architecting user interfaces for the web, this book belongs on your bookshelf.

Information Architecture defined...(2nd Edition review)

Wodkte and Govella do a good job in outlining their definition of the basic principles of IA:
- Design for Wayfinding
- Set expectations and provide feedback
- Design ergonomically

- Provide contextual help and documentation

While the illustrations that drive home the subject matter can be a little clipart-ish at times, the concepts are presented in a non-technical and non-jargon based way. Each topic is explained clearly using an outline / numbered bullet format to ensure that each section can be clearly understood independently and collectively. Items such as `Who are the users?' may seem trivial at first, but imagine how many interpretations of `who are users' exist with an organization and the problems that arise when the user begins to morph throughout the product lifecycle. Wodtke and Govella decompose several non-obvious items such as persona creation and navigational types (structural, associative, and utility) into chunks that are comprehensible (Hrair Limit). I was genuinely surprised to find a section for Social Architecture which exposed me to topics such as Kurt Lewin's formula for understanding human behavior and the elements of social architecture: identity + elements, relationships + elements, and activity + elements.

The book can be read from cover to cover, if time permits. However, most of the world will probably use this book as a reference guide for completing IA related tasks as they arise. I would strongly recommend that all aspiring and current IAs give the book a once over to spawn new thoughts about the discipline or to renew the interest in keeping things usable and findable.

What the doctor ordered
By David A. Seruyange
When I read the following, I knew I'd purchased the right book:
"You are going to do it. You might be the project or product manager, the designer, the engineer, or the marketing guy. You're not really sure why it landed on your desk; heck, you're looking around to see if there is another desk you could slide onto. But as your hope for getting someone else to do it fades, you realize it has to be done. And this is the book I wrote for you."
I am a software engineer (primarily web application development) and I spend most of my time writing "backend" code to query databases, apply business logic and generate server driven web pages (much like the one you are viewing right now).
As these applications grow more sophisticated it becomes more and more important to organize the which, how and what of content. This comes up in many ways: the order in which the user sees information, the navigation from screen to screen, the amount of data being display and so on.
This book begins with a description and basis for information architecture and then introduces a variety of principles that one can employ in creating an information architecture for a web site. Some examples of topics include wayfinding, navigation, organization, interviewing and mapping content.
The author's voice maintains an informal tone - it's obvious the author did not want to sound pedantic. However, the content is rich and well developed so one doesn't feel patronized.
The hidden value of this book is that it gives many examples when a principle is asserted. Just by touring the websites given with these principles in mind will make one a better information architect, be it formal or informal.
So my rating is 5 stars; loved it, loved it, loved it!

Q&A with Wouter de Kort, author of "Exam Ref 70-483: Programming in C#"

Q. Why is your book important right now?

A. C# is one of the most popular languages of this time. In 2012, C# was even chosen as the programming language of the year. Certifying yourself as a C# developer can be a great asset for potential employers. Studying for your certification will also help you in exploring areas of the C# language that you don’t have much experience with.

Programing in C# helps you by showing you aspects of the language that are important deepening your understanding of the language. This could be new areas like the async and await support in C# 5 but also some difficult subjects like properly implementing IDisposable.

Programming in C# is important both for new developers who want a head start and for experienced developers who want to make sure they understand all aspects of the language.

Q. What do you hope readers will walk away with?

A. After reading this book you will prepared for getting your certification as a C# developer. But even if that’s not your goal I’m certain that you will learn new tricks from this book that can help you in your work as a developer.

Do not buy this book
By Michael J Dour
This book will lead people down bad pathways, confuse them, or frustrate them. There are many problems with it and until they are addressed, I strongly recommend this book not be read. Here are the major issues I have with this book:
- A lot of technical information is incorrect. I was able to find 119 serious and minor technical errors. Some examples are "First of all, equal items should have equal hash codes. This means that you can check to determine whether two items are equal by checking their hash codes", "There are two places in memory where CLR stores items while your code executes. One is the stack; the other is the heap. The stack keeps track of what's executing in your code, and the heap keeps track of your objects...For an object on the heap, there is always a reference on the stack that points to it", "The enumerator has a MoveNext method that returns the next item in the collection", and the code on page 156 showing how WeakReferences should be used uses them incorrectly and could possibly return a null reference if the garbage collector collects the target after it is verified to have a non-null reference. Also, there are many code examples which don't compile, answers which were copied and pasted from other questions, and correct answers listed as incorrect and vice versa.
- There are many other errors are well. I was able to find 60 typos and language or formatting errors. Many of these are careless: references to code listings using the wrong listing numbers, listing descriptions being copied and pasted from other listings and then never updated, and code listings with unconventional formatting which makes it difficult to read.
- There is a lot of missing or incomplete information. There are countless examples of concepts which are mentioned and never explained, concepts never mentioned at all, and code examples which show advanced technical concepts which are never explained by the surrounding text. There is a large burden on the reader to glean information from examples and figure things out on their own.
- Much of the information is presented out of order. There is no logical progression of concepts which build off each other. Each small section is ordered in some sensible fashion, but when all sections of the book are taken together, it is a mixed bag. For example, the first section of the first chapter is about using the task parallel library to write asynchronous code, but then section three introduces boolean expressions, if statements, and loops. Also, the very last section of the book introduces arrays and collections, but they are used throughout the entire book.
- It is very difficult to verify your answers for the sample questions in the book when using the print version. There are no page numbers in either the questions sections or the answers sections pointing to the page of the associated section. I don't want to have to flip through ten pages to find the answers associated with the questions I just attempted to answer. I would like to know the exact page number where they can be found. Also, the original questions and answers are not reprinted in the answers section. All answer explanations say things like "Correct: This will work because..." If you forget the answer to which this explanation corresponds, you have to flip back and forth between the answers section and questions section. I had to flip back and forth a lot and it was frustrating.
- Since the book has a lot of information presented out of order, there are many notes in the pages telling the reader they can find out more about a concept by looking forward to a certain section. But it only lists the section name and objective number. No page number is listed and it makes it more difficult to find the page to read more about that concept.
- Some concepts are discussed multiple times and they are not always linked together. Also, some of the sections conflict with each other when discussing the same topic:
- Async/await are introduced once on page 17 and then again on page 266.
- Extension methods are introduced on page 103 and then again on page 295.
- Regular expressions are introduced on pages 163 and 186.
- XML is introduced on page 189, page 284, and page 308.
- JSON is introduced on page 189, page 289, and page 316. These sections all list different built-in or non-built-in ways to serialize JSON and they never mention the others.

To buy only as last resort
By Jjeff
This is one of the worst programming language books I ever bought. Unfortunately there is not much choice if you need a book that covers the 70-483 test. If you don't already know the material, be prepared to read the book in front of your PC so you can research online what the author meant or missed or forgot to explain, whenever needed... which will be a lot of times.

IMO, not for me, this alone won't help me pass the exam when used as reference.
By Gray
I honestly didn't like the book, not enough depth and details. IMO, this book alone as reference won't help you pass, so you'll be better off looking elsewhere to augment your learning if you're new to C sharp. Not a beginner's book to use as reference for the exam.

If only I could return this, I would.

Great book for experienced Exchange admins
By Chris Brown
Microsoft's new "Exam Ref" series will be a brilliant set of books, if Designing Messaging Solutions with Exchange Server 2010 is anything to go by. A relatively new initiative by MS Press, the Exam Ref series is designed to be concise, allowing for efficient and quick study. This book certainly meets that criteria. Definitely not content for a beginner Exchange admin, this book is geared towards those who have been Exchange admins for some time, who are looking to either design their own solutions from scratch, or just pass the 70-663 exam.

This book is a fantastic guide for experienced Exchange administrators who want to upgrade their skill-set to designing Exchange solutions, rather than simply managing and supporting them. The book goes in depth to detail *why* something is done a particular way, rather than just telling the reader to "do it", providing a much more fundamental understanding of the product. Focus is placed particularly on the enterprise features of Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, covering topics such as: Federation; multiple forest use; cloud synchronisation and in-depth routing information. This is not a book for the beginner Exchange administrator, but if you already have an implementation or are working to design solutions using Exchange 2010, this is a must-have.

The author's experience with the product is obvious with gotchas and useful tips present throughout. Designing and Deploying Messaging Solutions with Exchange Server 2010 closely follows the requirements of the 70-663 MCITP exam, so even if you're only in it to pass the exam, this is an extremely useful resource.

Book review: MCITP 70-663 Exam Ref: Designing and Deploying Messaging Solutions with Microsoft® Exchange Server 2010
By Dzoka
The author Orin Thomas is experienced writing about Microsoft Exchange

The book covers not only planning and deploying of Exchange Server 2010 itself but designing and deploying solutions like security, availability and recovery, messaging compliance, system monitoring and reporting as well.

Well organized and good enough coverage of the material. Links to Microsoft TechNet website present for those who need more detailed information on the subject. Most useful powershell cmdlets are given and some exam tips as well.

Every chapter has test questions and thought experiments - very nice feature to sharpen the mind :) Answers and explanations are presented at the end of the chapters.

I found it to be very useful as a reference for my daily work. And I would recommend it for everyone who deals with Exchange Server 2010.
