Great Reference Book while doing Sharepoint Deployments

I bought this first version of this book back in February for my 2nd Customer Deployment of Sharepoint. There are several things you may already know about Sharepoint Designer, but I found this book best used by intermediaries; as Reference Material.
For Beginners I also recommend to have and take the time to use the book because there will be things that will make more sense when you are presented with Business Case situations.
I put the book down for a month and now have started a 3rd customer deployment for a Bio-Tech company that wants to control workflows. Now I am re-referencing the book for additional triggers.
Down the road I can see using Data-Sources to create reports connected to Oracle DBs, but there is not a need right now or security access.
Hence the reference material.

If you are the Chief Designer-Dev of a Sharepoint Implementation this book is a must have for the meager cost.

Excellent for the person who knows something about SharePoint already

Like many tech book series, Microsoft's "Step by Step series has had its hits - and not infrequent misses. On the whole, I have found the Step By Step books to run toward the superficial, which sometimes is acceptable and sometimes not. "Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 Step by Step", however, is one of the best I've seen in this series to date.

Microsoft SharePoint is a complex platform. Newcomers get confused between the various incarnations of SharePoint. Further complicating matters are the interplay between SharePoint Designer and Microsoft's Visual Studio. Bottom line is the SharePoint universe is complex. Author Penny Coventry deals here with Office SharePoint Designer 2007 and what it does. She warns at the outset that the reader must have access to a server running Windows SharePoint Services or SharePoint Server 2007. I have seen reviews of this book criticizing the lack of a sample site on the accompanying CD. The author is clear that she does not provide the commercial software for this: if you want it, you have to buy it or otherwise have access to a running site.

Another issue is that this book is intended for the novice user of SharePoint Designer 2007, a product that has its roots in Microsoft's now discontinued Front Page 2003 product, which was intended exclusively for website design. SharePoint Designer is, in the final analysis, a programming tool with web design capabilities. Thus, the user with a programming background, especially in Visual Studio, who is looking for an introduction to SharePoint web design will be much more at home with the content of this book than will a web designer with no programming experience who is trying to learn about SharePoint itself.

If you have no experience in with SharePoint, programming SharePoint or web design, this is not the book for you.

Author Coventry, much to her credit, explicitly points out that SharePoint Designer actually has little usefulness for the average SharePoint worker. It is intended for the jobs that can't be accomplished using only a browser, but don't require the full power of Visual Studio. Ms. Coventry also maintains an excellent website in support of the book in particular and SharePoint in general. The URL is listed in the book.

With all those caveats and conditions out of the way, it's time to discuss the book itself.

"Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 Step by Step" is unusually well done. Its flow is well designed, beginning with a detailed history of SharePoint Designer, some information on SharePoint and how it interacts with Designer. And then it is on to doing things using SharePoint Designer 2007. Once again the potential reader is warned: if you don't have access to a server running SharePoint, this book will be of little use to you.

Coventry does a good job of explaining how SharePoint Designer works. Much of what she says will be familiar to a large degree to someone with experience with web design tools like FrontPage or DreamWeaver, but the information about SharePoint will be new.

Overall, a solid introduction to SharePoint Designer, but make sure you already have some understanding of SharePoint and access to a SharePoint server before you pick this one up.

Fantastic instructional materials on how to use SharePoint Designer 2007 effectively! I made the mistake early on of buying SharePoint books that focused on infrastructure-related topics on SharePoint. This book provides practical and powerful insights on how to exploit the user-facing capabilities of SharePoint. I was cautious about purchasing a Step-by-Step series book due to my past experiences reading books in the series that had what I believed to be superficial content. This instance broke that mold in style. It was evident that the author not only has book knowledge of the subject, she also has practitioner knowledge. It seemed like she anticipated every question that I had as I read through the book. Excellent work!

An Excellent Source of Tips, Tricks, and How-To's

As somebody who debugs applications for a living, I found this an outstanding resource to both refresh my memory, give me new tips and tricks, and provide a frame of reference for sharing this knowledge with others.

If you do not already have a symbol server set up for your organization, then you should order this book today for the simple step-by-step instructions for how to do this. This is an absolute requirement for success, yet for some reason seems to be consistently overlooked and considered a "black art" or something that only the largest of organizations has the resources to execute on. John debunks this myth handily, and provides the best resource I know on overcoming this initial hurdle to greater success.

I heartily recommend this book to anyone involved in software development.

I'd like to second the initial review: this is an excellent book. It covers the important topics about debugging, from project level issues (setting symbols and source servers) to code level issues (how to spot handle leaks with WinDBG). The book is engaging and easy to understand. It may even make you like debugging!

Some highlights include the great coverage of Visual studio and WinDBG. I use it regularly to look up a command or a tip-and-trick.

I didn't give it five stars because some of the topics are too developed. For example, I didn't need or want the long explanation about writing FxCop rules. I also found the book light on topics that are relevant to debugging such as instrumentation (perf counters and logging).

Overall this is book worth reading if you want to improve your development skills.

Excellent Information Source

Most SQL Server DBA's I know who have been working on SQL Server 7 or 2000 for any length of time usually have a copy of Kalen Delaney's "Inside SQL Server" sitting on their desk. For SQL Server 2005, that book has been split into four different books and it looks like all them are going to be must-have's occupying large swaths of book-shelf space across the planet. Because, the fact of the matter is, if you want to know the internals of the new database engine, this is your source.

Comparisons between this new book and the previous books in the series seem inevitable. From that type of comparison, I think that this book comes off very well. Removing the TSQL processing and other aspects of development from the book allows Delaney to drill down into every aspect of how the server works. She takes a very structured approach, showing how to install SQL Server before moving on to the Server Architecture and Configuration chapters. She covers database and database files, logging and recovery, tables, indexes, and locking, each in separate chapters, each in a great degree of detail. She takes the time between explaining how things work to suggest best practices for configuration and usage along the way. Scattered throughout are also Tip's & Notes that suggest alternatives to the topic under discussion or implications of the usage of a particular topic.

This is not a book from which you can easily learn basic SQL Server skills. So much time is spent on so much detail, invaluable detail for the experienced user, that the novice might get stuck in the mire. I personally don't find that to be an actual detraction from the book. In fact, I'd recommend that if you're just learning SQL Server 2005, you pick this book up in addition to some other, more general, tome, because from here you can learn the why's and wherefore's of what you're trying to do.

The Forward to the book says one of the most important things about this book and it bears repeating, "This is not a revision of the previous book. So much has changed and there are so many new features that Kalen had to write a brand new book." Reading through this book, that becomes clear on every single page. Technically advanced but sometimes incomprehensible

This book is perhaps the best book out there for understanding SQL 2005 architecture. I know of no other book which offers such advanced understanding of how SQL 2005 stores, retrives, and manages data.

Indeed, the author is a MS SQL MVP and has written with the collaboration of those who wrote the code for MS SQL 2005 at Microsoft.

The author's explaination, however, could be a lot better. For example, here is an exerpt on the author's explaination of IAM (Index Allocation Map):

"An IAM page contains a page header; an IAM page header, which contains eight page pointer slots; and a set of bits that map a range of extents on a file, which doesn't neccessarily have to be the same file that IAM page is in. The header has address of first extent in the range mapped by the IAM. The eight page pointer slots might contain pointers to pages belonging to the relevant object contained in mixed extents; only the first IAM for an object has values in these pointers."

Now, I have worked with databases for over a decade and have good understanding of Indexes and its structure, and I still did not understand what the author was talking about on some sentences.

Pros:
1)Explains data and index storage structures (Page, extents, B-Tree, Keys etc) and how they are managed in transactions (update, delete, insert) better than any book I know.
2)Relatively short book (400 pages) which does not waste words or sentences to make it a thicker book (common practice to write a thicker book for a higher price).

Cons:
1)Tries to combine MS SQL 101 topics (What is Master, MSDB, TEMP, and MODEL db?) with expert subject matter (What is IAM, Cluster Keys, RID, etc).
2)Writing is sometimes indecipherable.
3)Mostly not for the beginners (despite its rudimentrary coverage of the basics).

Depth and Clarity

I'm stingy with reviews, but once again, Kalen's book is a winner and this is one of the few great books on SQL Server. Her writing style is clear and she gets right to the details. Every book serves a specific need. If you need to understand the SQL Server engine, then this is the best book for that purpose. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Thanks, Kalen!

Excellent Book For What It Is

Looking for an introduction to C#, I read the reviews here and decided to purchase this book. Unlike a couple of other reviewers here, I already own a DICTIONARY, and so I am aware of what the words PRIMER and ASPIRING mean. Those looking for a book about programming .NET should buy a book titled something like, "Programming .NET." Those looking for a book about using Visual Studio.NET should buy a book titled something like, "Using Visual Studio.NET." A book titled, "Programming In The Key Of C# - A Primer For Aspiring Programmers" should present a primer for aspiring programmers. Gee, go figure.
Through the years, I have programmed in C, Pascal, Fortran, Cobol, Visual Basic, Delphi, various scripting languages in both the Unix and Windows worlds, Cold Fusion, PHP, and Active Server Pages. I wanted to learn C# from the lowest level and move upward from there so I would have a complete understanding of the language as I move towards my final goal of programming Windows and ASP.NET using C#. Having reviewed the TABLE OF CONTENTS made available here, it was easy to tell that this book would be the primer I was looking for. A previous reviewer claims that this book didn't teach him enough about C# syntax. The syntax in C#, although similar to most other object-oriented languages, is unique to C#. This whole book teaches C# syntax, and also goes into a fair amount of detail of how structures, objects, classes, etc. are handled internally in the computer, and by the C# compiler. I know there is another book written by Anders Hejlsberg which is a most complete coverage of the C# syntax, and I will probably end up buying that book as well to use as a reference. To begin learning C#, however, I wanted to begin in a very comfortable and basic place. I have finished this book, I have purchased and am reading a book on programming Windows with C#, and when I am finished with that book, I will buy a new book that is more specific to programming ASP.NET. I will probably buy books specific to ADO.NET, and who knows what else as I become aware of new complexities that I would like to understand.
As a book about learning the basics of programming in C#, Mr. Petzold's book delivers on just what the title implies.

Definitely not for the advanced programmer

For those who rated this down because it was for beginners, I would suggest re-reading the subtitle. It is clear this book is for the beginning programmer. As someone who had barely enough programming experience to be able to confidently do much that was more complex than "Hello, World" in C#, I found this book an excellent primer on programming. It clearly explains things that I've found other books have a tough time doing (I went through the Murach's C# book in parallel, which I also found very good compared to other books I tried). It just needs to be rated for what it is: a book for people who may not have any programming experience that does a great job in introducing the necessary concepts.

For more in depth C# knowledge, a friend at Microsoft recommended Inside C# 2nd Edition. Perhaps that's the book some of the reviewers were looking for?

"A Primer for Aspiring Programmers"

Charles Petzold does an excellent job of introducing C#, the latest OOP from Microsoft. The book is not for an advanced programmer - you would be disappointed if you thought this was a 300 level book, but it does say it right in the name.

What this book does that C# Step by Step does not do is it explains, very clearly, why you are doing what you are doing. It doesn't get bogged down in step 14 of 30. Petzold patiently explains what placeholders are in Console.Writeline() and why they're so useful. He carefully takes you from something you know to something you wish you knew and then explains the how's and why's of everything. His style is almost as if he were talking to you. He uses phrases like "Check this out" to make the reading livelier. I can almost feel his enthusiasm for C# coming off the pages.

If you know C, C++, Java or maybe even Visual Basic this book may be too basic for your needs. But if you're interested in learning C# as a first language this is a great book.

Outdated and Incoherent

This book is both outdated (it discusses extensively Zope extensions that are no longer supported) and incoherent (it is
just a collection of unrelated example projects only loosely
tied together by the common theme of managing some content on a
web site). You're better off with the Zope Bible (for Zope) and the Content Management Bible (for CM issues generally). However,
there are a few useful things in it so if you can get it for
$5-10 as a remaindered book, go for it.

practical and well written

Zope is an exciting Web Application Server. It has the powerful scripting language
in python; it is Open Source Software with strong commercial supports. In fact, the only
thing users and developers often complain about is its deep learning curve, which is
more or less about the lack of good documentation.
This book is an excellent sources for developers. It will jump
start you with a set of essential zope knowledge and products covering serveral
major areas of cutting-edge website architechture:
events publishing (Calendar Tag),
discussion tools and weblog ( ZWiki & Squashdot & CMF & ZUBB & Tracker),
web mail (POPMail & IMapClient & ZmailIn ),
searching ( ZCatalog )
external access,
user management and security
not only it covers in details of the above area and related products, but the
authors did a fine job of making them so easy to follow and understands. Even some
of the most difficult technologies are covered with easy: CMF Tools and ZPatterns,
those two had given me days of headache before were finally making sense to me.
I have read another book before (The Zope Book by Amos and Michel of Zope fame). Both
are excellent and they actually complement each other very well. If you have read those
who complainted about The Zope Book's lack of practical contents (such as database access,
setting up zope with apache etc.), those issues are all dealt in excellent details here
in this book!
If you are one of those who have to deal with every aspect of web-related issues, such as
server setup and administration, web architechture design and development, programmers
and web content design, then this book is a must have!

almost the kitchen sink

This is a good intro to Zope. If you have a free weekend and want to get to know Zope, this would be a very fine way to do it. Zope is amazingly expandable, and that is one of the things that this book points out & demonstrates with several helpful examples. I was amazed at how much the authors were able to pack into the book & pleased with the way they used products to demonstrate important features of Zope.
Because Zope is so expandable and versatile, however, they had to leave some things out. A topic that could have used a little more coverage (or maybe a lot, maybe a seperate book?) is database integration. It's a big topic, though, so I guess it makes sense that it isn't fully fleshed out.
Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone who (like me) is still getting to know Zope. It's very clearly written and well laid out. Kudos to the authors and publisher.

It really is a pocket consultant

I had assumed that this book was a cookbook in nature, I need to do this procedure - look it up and execute the steps in order. But it really was a lot more. It does an excellent job of explaining the concepts in a concise accurate manner. There is an impressive amount of content in this book as well. I was happily deceived by its size. But if you want a book that quickly explains what you need to do with Exchange 2010, this is a great option. I have the Unleashed book, and I find myself using this book quite a lot more.

Very good book for Exchange Admins

I am not a full time Exchange Admin and am planning upgrading an Exchange 2003 Server to Exchange 2010. I found this book when I was doing some research on Exchange upgrade.It is very practical and detailed. The instructions are very clear.

It helps Exchange Admins in their day-to-day work as well as the upgrading. I've already done the upgrade in my virtual lab following the procedure described in the book. I am looking forward to the real upgrade in the coming weeks. With this book handy, I have more confidence in the success of the upgrade.

Essential resource for Exchange

William Stanek is the top authority for all things Microsoft for a reason. He is well known for his detailed and clear explanations. He knows more than any dozen other so-called experts and he's not afraid to share every last bit of knowledge he has about any topic he writes about. Exchange Server 2010 Adminstrators Pocket Consultant isn't meant to be an allinone book but in this book's 700 pages I learned everything I wanted to know about Exchange Server 2010 and then some.

Good for anyone working in tech from dev to IT admin. Definitely worth the money and then some too.

A must read for the .NET Architect

Below is my review of the first edition of this book. I have included it in its entirety because it is rather short.

--Review Start--
This book does a great job of putting architecture into a view that .NET developers and architects can relate to.

The book covers design principles and patterns, and then relates them to each layer of a traditional layered system. It includes business, services, data access, and presentation layers. The authors include several different patterns for each layer and discuss the pros and cons of each.

The book focuses on the technical aspects of .NET architecture. It does not cover the soft skills needed to be an architect, or cover the customer facing skills needed to communicate with the business stakeholders. You won't find much on process either, just an overview. These missing topics have not taken away from the book, they have made it a stronger book. There are plenty of resources on how to execute the soft skills and architecture process. This book concentrates on how to communicate with the development team through solid design and well known patterns and principles.

This is a must read for all architects, no matter what your skill set is.

A .NET developer looking to move into architecture should make this book their first stop on a long journey. This will definitely get you off to a very strong start.

This book will not leave my side... until the 2nd edition...

Now that the second edition is here, I'm not quite sure the last sentence of that review is true anymore. There is still some information that is in the first edition of the book, which has been replaced in this version of the book, that I would still like to have handy. That is not a bad thing, but I consider this version of the book volume two rather than an edition two.

In chapter 9 Implementing Domain Model the authors say "Most .NET developers have grown up following the guidelines of the Table Module Pattern". In my experience most .NET developers do that, but they still do not know that. I have referred developers to the first version of this book repeatedly because it does a great job of describing the Table Module Pattern.

The first edition also does a great job of explaining the Transaction Script, Active Record, Remote Façade, Data Transfer Object, Adapter, Service Layer, Model View Controller, Model View Presenter, and the Presentation Model Pattern. A lot of these patterns are still valid patterns to use in simple applications.

The first edition of the book also covers Service Oriented Architecture and UML. The UML section isn't that great though, so it is not missed.

The second edition of the book touches on many of the patterns and topics above but in a different context. The authors group the patterns above, and the relational models they work with, into the Data-centric age- late 1970's to the early 2000s. They say the task-based age, using domain-driven design, started in the early 2000s and has continued until present day. This edition of the book brings us up to speed on what the software architect is doing in the .NET world today using domain-driven design.

Like the first edition of the book, this one also focuses on the technical aspects of .NET architecture. It does not cover the soft skills needed to be an architect, or cover the customer facing skills needed to communicate with the business stakeholders, although domain driven design (DDD)increases the quality of communication with the business. You won't find much on process either, just an overview.

Like the first version, these missing topics have not taken away from the book, they have made it a stronger book. As I said above there are plenty of resources on how to execute the soft skills and architecture process. This book concentrates on how to communicate with the development team through solid design and well known patterns and principles.

The bottom line is this book summarizes what software architecture evolved into after how it was presented in the first edition of this book. However that does not mean, the techniques in this book are good for every project. DDD is not easy and can add too much complexity to simple projects to make it worth the effort. I would say on more complex decent size projects the techniques are a must do to enable all those Scrum projects out there to actually be agile.

Having 15 minute meetings every morning while passing around a ball, pretending to force deliverables executing two week iterations, and eliminating upfront thought does not make your project agile. Your team must have agile design and coding skills, and your architecture absolutely must be agile. There is also a lot of things that must happen at an enterprise level on the business side in order to have an agile environment, but that is beyond the scope of this book.

The book comes with downloadable samples which really help when covering the patterns that are instanced throughout the book. Although this book does a great job of showing the development level details involved with putting an agile architecture in place I would also highly recommend .NET software architects and developers also read Adaptive Code via C#: Agile coding with design patterns and SOLID principles. It covers agile development practices that are an absolute must on an agile software development project.

This book does a great job of explaining all the material it covers. The topics are explained in detail and in a way that makes them easy to understand. Every software architect, enterprise architect, project manager, CIO, developer, and tester should read this book. Even though most of these roles won't be doing the architecture it is still necessary for them to understand what the architect is doing that uses the patterns and practices in this book.

Keep in mind that agile is a state of being, not a process, a set of development practices, a way of budgeting, or an architecture. All those things must be done in a certain way in order to achieve agility on a project. This book does an excellent job of showing the architect how to achieve their part of the many pieces of the puzzle that are needed to create an agile environment. Adaptive Code via C#: Agile coding with design patterns and SOLID principles does a great job of showing the developer how to achieve their part of the puzzle that are needed to create an agile environment. Absolutely buy both, but architects should start here, and developers should start with Adaptive Code via C#: Agile coding with design patterns and SOLID principles.

Editing and Demystifying Needed

It's hard to know exactly where to start with my review of this book. The book has a few very strong points to it, but there are also some significant weaknesses, to the extent that I would never recommend this book for anyone looking to become a fellow software architect.

Let me start with the good things. It appears as if this book was written under demands of covering X material in Y pages, and the authors do an admirable job in attempting to adhere to these limits. The first part of the book, chapters 1 through 4, are especially well written, and are worth any developer's time reading through. These chapters cover topics that include what an architect actually does, some basics of important software design, a few advanced topics (such as SOLID programming), and writing high-quality software. In particular, the section on the aforementioned SOLID programming topic is about the best I've seen written. (It could still be improved -- I've yet to see a good explanation of Liskov's principle written -- but it's still the best I've seen.)

However, the remaining chapters -- those which I could finish before giving up the endeavor as not worth the time commitment -- fail in several key ways.

First, the amount of material that the rest of the book attempts to cover is too great for the amount of space given. Explanations are often overly terse, subtopics are mentioned only enough to throw red herrings in your way, and the examples are rushed, incomplete, and often misleading.

The "misleading" claim comes from the second problem, which is probably the largest: the authors take their practice of Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and Command/Query Responsibility Segregation (CQRS) almost as gospel. They speak of it in reverent tones, always praising it, and (except for a few lines at the start of one chapter) they don't mention the absolutely enormous problems that both of these approaches can present to a development team. In my first experience with CQRS a few years back, I was working on a financial enterprise application with a bus-based CQRS core design. We had massive problems, much of it based on the inability of most of the team to understand exactly what the architects were trying to achieve, much of it based on an imperfect understanding of CQRS's inherent difficulties: for example, how easy it can be, when using one database each for commands and queries (hoping for eventual consistency), to make a mistake early on which can render your command database and query database permanently (mathematically impossible to fix) out of sync.

Instead, we get sentences like the following, from page 260 of the book: "Honestly, we don't think there are significant downsides to CQRS." I think that's where I stopped taking this section seriously.

Finally, the book reads as if it had no editor working on it, especially once you get to chapter 8. The authors presumably don't speak English as their primary language, and while this is definitely not a problem in the first 7 chapters, the later chapters are full of language errors (and flat-out mistakes) that any editor who cast a short glance at the text would have noticed. There are sentences with missing words, sentences that have literally no meaning, garden path sentences that make you reread the sentence repeatedly to figure out the sense of the meaning, and other confusions. There are sentences like, "There are two things to consider, First, there's X." Then no second thing is ever presented. Or there are three bullet points followed by "The above two bullet points..."

Also, an editor might have suggested that the authors check the definitions they give for terms that might not be in the wheelhouse of most advanced programmers, such as a Cartesian Product (which the authors get wrong in an apparently minor, but actually devastating way).

In the end, I agree that DDD and CQRS can work as design motifs, in some cases, so long as you consider the cost/benefit analysis involved. With the rosy-eyed view that the authors give of these two topics, however, and the "there's nothing bad about it" attitude, serve only to mislead the reader. With this problem, and with the incomplete state of most of the examples in their later chapters, I can't give the book more than three stars.

It's good in the early stages, but use caution from the second section onward.

Must read for any Developer, Architect or Not

I just finished reading Architecting Applications for the Enterprise.\

This book is a must read for any .Net developer. Though aimed at Architects or those who are on track to become an Architect, the information contained inside is something that any developer, from "Junior" to "Architect" should know. It's extremely easy to read, and the authors don't drag you down into concept hell when trying to explain things.

Pros:
The first few sections are a well explained overview of what the authors think architecture means, and the pitfalls it tries to avoid. Then the book digs a bit deeper with descriptions of SOLID Principles, design patterns and testability. These sections are where the book really shines, taking a bunch of abstract concepts and boiling them down to what situations they help prevent.

Finally, the last half of the book delves deep into the domain model and domain driven design. These sections are peppered with scenarios and even a few code samples to take an extremely complex topic and make it understandable without putting the reader to sleep.

Cons:
There are some things covered in the first edition that I wish would have carried over to the second edition. Also, The book is very heavily focused on Domain Driven Design, I wish there would have been a bit better comparison and contrast with other design methods. While I agree with the authors preference for DDD, it would have been nice to see pros and cons of different approaches.

I have to say this has been one of the more enjoyable tech books I have read. Other than a couple of nitpicky issues I have with the book (Which I won't even knock off points for as they are really non-issues, ) it is now a go to compendium that won't leave my desk.
