I've learned much in the first 3 chapters
By Allan Bach
As a self-taught Access developer for the past eight years, I have an extensive library of books dealing with beginneing to advanced areas of Access. I bought this book to add to my library, figuring it to be another reference item. However, in a casual browsing of the content, I discovered this book has much more to offer. I was pleasantly surprised to see information on levels of magnitude for linked tables, never having known that the number of sub folders for linked tables can affect the speed of reading from them.

Each of the sample databases has more than enough explanation and code to fully understand the how and why of the application.

After reading only the first three chapters, I have learned much that I was never aware of. I thought I understood Single and Double number types, but was re-educated by the information on page 18. Pages 32 and 33 taught me some new things about the difference between format and input mask.

I am now much better at my development, and I haven't yet finished the book. Excellent work, Mr. Viescas!

The first chapter is so wrong-headed on several issues, it's hard to get excited about reading through the rest.
By rick in houston
It's very possible that the remaining chapters have some useful examples of application building, but the first chapter contains a number of just plain bone-headed propositions that will seriously mislead the naive developer.

One proposition, repeated in several contexts, is that somehow an Autonumber field, being an "artificial key", is a bad idea. This is an egregiously wrong-headed view. A primary key in a table should ideally tell you nothing about the data on the row except the value you need to retrieve the row. On this score, an Autonumber field is ideal.

The assertion that some designers just "give up" and "throw in" an Autonumber shows a profound misunderstanding of normalization and should not be given a moment's credence.

An Autonumber field is, strictly speaking, an "artificial key", as the author says. To imply that this makes it also wrong is at the very least a misreading of a phrase, and suggests a cursory level of understanding of the subject at best.

Incidentally, another artificial key, widely used, is the GUID (Globally Unique Identifier), typically handled and presented as a long string of hexadecimal characters. The only difference between the GUID and Autonumber is that Autonumber values are sequential numbers (GUIDs can be, but normally aren't, and for a reason) and they are limited to a smaller set of values (2 billion and some for Autonumber versus 3.4 x 10^38 for GUIDs).

The differences are not germane to this discussion. Both GUIDs and Autonumber fields provide primary keys that tell you nothing about the row they identify, except the value you use to retrieve the row. Far from being somehow "wrong", versus human-readable keys, this is exactly what you SHOULD be using.

This is not the place for this level of detail, given the number of issues that arise in the first chapter, but a summary is surely merited.

He warns against "oversimplifying tables", which is to say, normalizing fully. Why he would see it as a problem that you must normally use queries to view the data is beyond me. Table design for relational data is not, repeat NOT, about human readability. It is simply not a factor. For spreadsheets, yes, but we're not talking about Excel.

Table design is about correct relations between lists of things that you need to represent, nothing else. The payoff for normalizing properly ("oversimplifying tables") is that your applications can handle the stuff in your lists easily and correctly, and there is even a performance benefit. (The performance argument is less compelling partly because gains from proper representation can be offset by the larger number of joins required when data is fully normalized. When that becomes a genuine problem, you start creating data warehouse repositories where everything is human readable and nothing is updatable anyway. Human readability of keys is not a consideration in live data.)

Using "artificial keys", according to the author, "masks the value for sorts and searches". Again, not an issue. Use queries. That's what they're for, to restore human readability to information that has been purposely placed in a logically compelling arrangement (multiple tables). If you don't think that queries are the answer for all normalization problems, use Excel, and stay out of relational design.

Don't whine because you can't read a single table and tell what's happening at levels above it. (The author could not read a stock record and tell what product was in stock in a design using "artificial keys", meaning autonumber field.) Expect human readability loss. It's an all but inevitable product of normalizing fully and using proper primary keys, keys which tell you nothing at all about a row of data except what value is needed to retrieve the row.

He observes that "you cannot join or link tables on a null value". It's true, in a trivial sense. You cannot literally use the JOIN operator to match fields on null values and get what you were hoping for. You can however add two fields to your query and use "IS NULL" as a criterion for both of them. There's your (INNER) JOIN.

More NULL silliness: Does A = B? Well, you can't answer that question "if A or B or both contain a null". Yes, you can. See above for doing it with criteria. Or, use the NZ or IsNull function in Access.

He recounts a sad example of some row being deleted from an upper level table, and having "no way to put it back ... with the original number in it", except by using "a brute-force insert query". Just for starters, use of relational integrity would have prevented the problem altogether, by blocking removal of an upper level table row whose primary key was in use as a foreign key elsewhere. It just wouldn't have happened. The author may not have had this option, since his application is described as working between a home office and remote users. Put referential integrity aside for this one, for lack of information. (I half suspect that use of built-in synchronization, instead of custom synchronizing code, as he describes it, would have solved the problem anyway, but put that aside, too, also for lack of information.)

Still, the answer in this case is exactly to run the one query you need to restore the row. There is nothing brute force about this. It's how you recover. Use LEFT JOIN from lower level to upper level table to identify the missing key that must go in the upper table. Replace the row in the upper table to restore that primary key. Then edit the remaining fields, and you are done.

In fact, you don't even have to edit the fields (though you would, to be nice). Since the data is now healthy again as a result of running exactly one append query, you could let the user edit the upper level record in whatever form would normally be used for that purpose. Just fill some fields with "**edit me**" as a signal that the record needs attention. It's trivial.

But not for this author. Get this: Rather than simply run one query and then edit some fields to solve the problem, the author "ended up writing a lot of unnecessary code and some special data entry forms to solve the problem". Unnecessary hardly describes it.

"In the correct design on the left..." Sigh. This is another jab at using "artificial keys", whereas his design (the correct one on the left) uses human readable and sometimes compound keys. I'm not such purist that I would never use a human readable key. I do it occasionally for lookup tables, so that I can store a short, but still readable, key, but also provide a full name and even a description. I do it mainly when I'm pressed for time and I know that the application at hand has no big future anyway.

It's practical in some cases, and causes no great harm, but it is technically a violation of the injunction that the primary key should tell you nothing about the row, and text joins are certainly somewhat slower than numeric joins. In the universe of Access applications, however, this consideration is typically not a major factor. Still, to call his definitely compromised solution the "correct design" is just beyond boneheaded. It's naive.

As for composite keys, which the author encourages: Just say no. Don't use them. They are annoying in every way imagineable. Maybe, MAYBE in the lowest level tables you could possibly have, EVER, in your data, they might be a slightly effort-saving compromise. But the first time you need to add a level below that level, you'll wish you hadn't.

However interesting the rest of the book may be, and it could be, approach it with great caution, knowing that the author shows no great understanding (it is tempting to say no understanding at all) of data design. He could be great at forms and reports and VBA. I don't plan to bother finding out.

My own personal choice is still Litwin/Getz/Gunderloy series of Access Versionwhatever Developer's Handbook, expanded to two volumes several years ago.

Building Microsoft Access Applications
By Chuck Schulz
The book is well written with real world application samples and practical tips for how to design a database that works instead of trying to mimic a template sample that could be missing key elements needed to run a functioning program.

Full of misunderstandings with some insights
By Bas Vodde
I was looking forward to this book! An important hole in the current agile literature and a book only on this subject. Finally... but ... I'm extremely disappointed.

Jochen Krebs' Agile Portfolio Management consists of 3 parts. Part one is called "Agile for Managers", part two is the things about portfolio management and part three is *other* called organization and environment.

The first part consists of three chapters. The first chapter consists a general motivation for agile development and responding to change. The second chapter is a short introduction to Agile development and the last chapter an introduction to project management. This takes up 1/4th of the book. The explanations are poorly written and full with misunderstandings. To give a concrete example, on page 27 Jochen is suggesting that in Scrum you can not have any other meetings except for the daily Scrum. A recommendation which I've never heard before and I'm pretty sure he didn't actually mean that!

Part two consists of about 125 pages and is the main subject of the book, though it starts with three somewhat introduction chapters called Foundation, Metrics and Return of Investment. These chapters don't show too much experience from the author. The suggestion that TDD and Continuous Integration finds defects early so that one of the main quality metrics is open defect count is absurd and goes directly against advise of great agile literature like "Art of Agile development" or "Sustainable Software Development". It gives the feeling the author simply forgot to learn about agile development before he wrote the book. The explanation of story points was vague, the explanation of Use Case points unnecessary. The talk about return of investment forgot to give actual tools for doing so.

After the first 100 pages, I almost threw away the book and was pretty sure I would rate it 1 start. Though, luckily it started to improve. If you buy this book, I recommend to skip the first 100 pages :)

Chapter 7, 8, and 9 cover three portfolios: Project, resource and asset. The project portfolio covered some good ideas like increasing the portfolio decision frequency, using agile metrics and making other decisions than go/kill. The resource portfolio chapter was poor and doesn't talk much about resource management. The asset portfolio chapter is short but covers some important topics not covered frequently in other places.

Part three just consists of two chapters. The first one uses Scrum to become a portfolio management process. I found the idea interest and absurd. Especially the daily portfolio meeting and the portfolio master seen a sure sign of misapplication. The chapter is speculative, the real story about the real situation is missing. It made me doubt the author has actually done this. The second chapter of part three is a chapter about the PMO. I very strongly disagree with the suggestions from the author, especially making the PMO larger for Agile organizations.

In other words, I only thought that part two was worth my time (and only half of that) thats about 50 pages... Next to this, the writing and editing of the book was poor. Some constructions seem very German and sentences are constructed poorly making me sleepy while reading. I wonder if Microsoft Press did any editing at all or supported the author at all. Quite disappointing.

I would not recommend this book to anyone. It's probably better to read some traditional portfolio management book (e.g. Coopers Portfolio Management for New Products) together with some basic Agile books and especially Mike Cohn Agile Estimating and Planning (which covers much of the ROI and value calculation, but explained better). If you read all of these and want some insights and ideas from this book, just read chapter 7, 8 and 9 and skip the rest.

I still rated this book three stars, which is probably too high. After the first 100 pages, I was sure it would not be higher than 1 star. But some chapters contained some insights and that made me decide to give it 2 stars. I switched to three stars simply because I applaud the attempt. This is a new area, there is no existing material and it is great Jochen took this opportunity and tried to fill a gap. Though, a different book is probably needed.

Accurate Assessment of Conventional Software Processes?
By dmwpepper
While the basic description of agile portfolio management is useful, I found many of the claims about current software project practices to be based on exagerrated weaknesses of these conventional practices.

I believe the author exaggerates the differences between customer expectations and customer requirements. While they can be different, competent systems analysts can capture and document expectations, as well as requirement. The author's view is that traditional requirements analysis, for various reasons cannot be expected to capture customer requirements in a timely and "agile"/adaptable manner. My experience is different.

The author also claims that traditional project management practices contribute to a lack of agility. WBSs, GANT charts and other techniques are inherently inflexible, rigid and labor intensive, in his view. My experience with tools like Microsoft Project is that what-if scenarios and other hypothetical and actual adjustments are easy to create and provide the kind of decision support a project manager needs when requirements change, resources come and go, or schedules tighten unexpectedly.

Having worked on a number of rapid prototyping and quick reaction environments I realize that keeping up with customers that have a fast ops tempo and shifting focus can be a challenge. For that reason, I strongly agree with the author on the value of constant interaction with the customer and stakeholders, continuous builds, on-going testing and integration, teams being given wide latitude to focus on developing solutions and managers focusing on removing impediments. However, the author claims that these and other practices he discusses are unique to an agile development environment.

In my view, agile development represents just one confluence of best practices identified over many years and under different labels, such as rapid prototyping, joint application development, spiral development, Rational Unified Process (RUP), etc. While the author discusses these and other methodologies, I think his comparisons and contrasts with agile development are superficial. RUP, in particular, is not given its due as being an "agile" process and project management framework that can be used on different kinds of software projects.

I'm more of a middle of the road person. I tend to blend the strengths of many different approaches and when I read something that maximizes its strengths while exaggerating the weaknesses of other approaches, I tend to be skeptical. From my own experience with dynamic customer environments, I wonder if the author's description of agile development would lend itself to an EFFICIENT discovery of complex requirements. What's more efficient and agile, trying to code to "vague" requirements and continually coming back to the customer saying, "Is this the rock you wanted?" or holding some JAD sessions, getting with subject matter experts and prototyping aspects of the system that are not clearly understood? I'm not sure the author's description of agile development adds anything new to previous techniques for clarifying vague requirements or discovering unspoken requirements. It just takes a team of analysts, developers and stakeholders willing to work closely together, whether it be in the Elaboration phase of a RUP-based project, the 1st or 2nd iteration phase on a rapid-prototyping project or (get this) even in the requirements analysis phase of a traditional life cycle project.

Also, to me, the notion of "stories", "epics" and "themes" represent unnecessarily relabeled and watered-down versions of more mature UML techniques that model system structure, behavior and human-system and system-to-system interaction. To his credit, the author did spend time discussing the application of use cases which are easily implmented graphically and textually in UML.

While the author does bring together a number of concepts that are useful for running a project, he doesn't make the case that agile development, as a whole, is a major departure from conventional practices, but I like adding some of the "tools" he discussed to my toolbelt.

Forgettable
By PMO Manager
One fourth of the book is devoted to the usual waterfall badgering. Another fourth to motherhood statements about agile practices. Another fourth to simplistic ideas about project selection and resource planning. And another fourth to mmm..., what was the last fourth about?

Language not clear
By A. Ali
I've just started the book. While there seems to be useful information presented, the authors are not native English speakers and apparently the publishers did not employ an editor to make the book more precise and more idiomatic. For instance on page 25: "Can make due with very little memory space," where "do" should have been used instead of "due." More seriously, the confusing way static and shared are defined and differentiated on pp.380-381; for example, this misleading wording: "However, you also have the option to create components that don't access class members." More accurate would have been: "You also have the option to create class members that can be used without instantiating the class." And instead of confusing the reader about differences between static and shared it would have been better to say, as Alessandro Del Sole does, that static in VB.NET is called shared. The two examples I've given above come from random but not extensive browsing: I am sure there are numerous other errors and oversights in presentation.

Besides the errors in language, the code is not clear. For example, the section on passing arguments to properties is interesting and not covered elsewhere -- but the code is unclear. Likewise the code for the split method for the string class on pp.295-296 is unclear when simpler examples would have sufficed (as given by Del Sole, for instance).

The book may have its uses as a reference but not on a stand-alone basis. I personally prefer Del Sole's "Visual Basic 2010 Unleashed" and the bible by Troelsen and Agarwal: "Pro VB 2010 and .NET 4 Platform."

Errors and inconstant use of variables in the text
By Atom B
Update: As I progress further into the book the information is good and accurate. It's the projects that are the major downfall of this book. It still seems like two different versions of the book were written and the projects got mixed together. I upped my review to 2 stars.

This book appears to be targeted at an old version of visual studios with only small parts of the text updated. In one paragraph the the name of a variable will be txtmoviereview latter it changes to txtfilmreview with no explanation. Then there will be a picture example showing code with yet different names. This type of error is frequent.

The book ask you to use menu items that are no longer available in visual studios 2010 like adding an empty project. One Project requires you to download and use code from the authors site but the code you type will not match the references in the code you must download. Steps in project are often incomplete only getting you part of the way to were you should be. Most of the conceptual information is accurate it falls apart if you want to do any of the projects.

If you know another .net and want a challenge of correcting the authors mistakes this book might work for you. However if you are new to programming or even Visual Studios stay away from this book. It will only confuse you.

Excellent Book
By joey
I was suspicious at first: Yet another VB2010 book? And that late in the product cycle? But it seemed to concentrate basically on learning the actual language in depth, which was exactly what I was looking for - so I gave it a try. And I have to say: Wow! First of all, Herr Loeffelmann does proof the fact that Germans can be funny. And secondly, his approach to explain even complex facts is different, but very effective. If you, as one of many examples, want to grasp object oriented programming in a matter of minutes: Give his "Peter- the-monkey-approach" a try! 5 stars for that.

Average Book - Supplement it with MSDN
By Vikrant Kalhan
I would actually rate this book 3.5. It's a decent enough book to keep your preparation more structured, focused and on track towards clearing the exam. Remember, it's easy to get lost in MSDN. There are a few obvious typos which are easily spotted. A few of the topics covered need to be supplemented with additional information in MSDN. And I think William Ryan is the worst author of them all.

I recently cleared this exam so in case you are still working on it (instead of 70-503) here's what I did:

- Read this book cover to cover.

- Finished most of the Hands-On-Lab excercises.

- Supplemented some of the topics namely:
Custom Soap Headers/Extensions, .NET Remoting (w/ MSDN Samples), WSE 3.0 (Custom Policy Assertions, WS-Security, SoapFilters, WS-Messaging etc) from MSDN and WSE 3.0 Documentation.

- Coverage of Serviced Components/Enterprise Services/MSMQ is adequate from the exam perspective, although I did lookup some of the classes in MSDN.

- Took practice tests directly from MeasureUp (Practice Test/Exam voucher combo). Did not use the practice test on the CD.

- Took me about a month to prepare. Though I have some prior experience of building distributed applications.

The actual exam duration is 125 mins. Total of 40 questions. Passing score of 700 out of 1000. I got a score of 953 and probably 2 questions wrong.

Hope it helps and best of luck!

Here's a response to the comment made by 'pturner75':
You can use BeginXXX and EndXXX methods to invoke web services asynchronously in .NET 2.0. Just generate your proxies using wsdl.exe or wsewsdl3.exe instead of relying on auto-generated VisualStudio proxies (via web-references).

Pretty decent book that covers distributed technologies in .NET environment
By XML Guru
Having worked in distributed technologies in mostly Unix based environment for about 15 years and about 2 years in .NET, I thought it is a good idea to see how the technologies compare in both the cross-platform environments. So that was my original motivation to buy this book so I could gain/reinforce my knowledge in .NET based distributed technologies and compare it to Unix cousins.

As I kept reading the book, I was bit intrigued and figured may be I should appear for exam for the kicks.

I must say they did a very good job of it though there are multiple errors in the book and also in the question bank (for e.g., most of WSE related questions were based on WSE 2.0 as opposed to WSE 3.0). And some of questions were even duplicate. Though at times it was irritating, it did not stop me from making progress, however. Basically, it forced me to refer to MSDN articles and .NET 2.0 documentation.

If one wants to be knowledgeable in these technologies, one needs to supplement the information in this book with the following material:

1. Programming .NET Components, 2nd Edition by Juval Lowy -- an excellent book for asynchronous calls, delegates, remoting and security

2. Expert Service-Oriented Architecture in C# 2005 -- excellent book for Web services and WSE 3.0

3. Pro MSMQ (Microsoft message Queue Programming) by Arohi Redkar et al. -- Excellent book for MSMQ 3.0

Of course, nothing to beat hands-on experience as mastering these technologies is not a trivial effort at all.

Anways, the exam had 40 questions and about 160 minutes to finish it. Passing score was 700 (I have no clue how they calculate this score). I got a score of 858 though I must admit it was lot of hard work and patience.

Yes, I recommend this book as it is the only game in town. I could have rated it 5 stars if they QA'ed the contents a bit more and that is a shame.

Good luck with it.

Lots of errors
By P. Turner
There are many, many errors in this book.

I question whether it is about .NET 2.0 at all. One whole section relates to calling web services in .NET 1.x (Beginxxx and Endxxx) which is NOT posible in .NET 2.0 web services (unless you reconfigure it manually, which is not explained). It looks like it has been cut-pasted from the 1.x book. Then they start to rant on about .NET 3.0 and WCF??? What is the book REALLY about??

They have overly complicated some topics and overly simplify others. Showing masses of code does not help people learn, unless it is explained. Most of the chapters seem to be out of order. They introduce a topic and then show some code, where large parts of the code are not explained until a later chapter.

They also use lots of references to web sites. This is a cop-out, they need to explain things not just give web links.

The authors 'Real Life' sections escape me too... some of these have no relationship to anything covered in the topic at all. One in particular was something like 'hey, I did this project and then learnt about Web Services, so they are really cool' ??? What the ???

Also, considering the book was written bypeople who are not even MCTS qualified... I am not surprised that the book is junk.

Get the book if you are only interested in the exam, but otherwise, find something better written if you actually want to learn about the technology.

Good Intro to the 2012 version
By Jebra
I hadn't used SQL Server since 2007 and I needed a reintroduction. This isn't so much in-depth as it is a taste of all the things you can do with SQL Server, including new features. You can download the sample code but I find it more worth the effort to type it in myself, so that I can think the processes through while I type (I just understand and learn better that way). None of the samples are very long so it's not difficult.

You should have a little bit of familiarity with SQL Server - not a lot, this will be too simple otherwise.

I almost gave it four stars instead of five for the errata - the sample code seems to be free of error and I had to go to it once when I didn't understand the error messages I was getting. Nonetheless, it was the right book for me to jump into this new version after years of not using SQL Server and get my feet wet again.

A Great Beginners Book
By KAREN BREDAHL
This is a book for beginners. It starts you with a description of the SQL Server and detailed installation instructions. From there is walks you through the basics in an easy to understand fashion. I am half way through the book and have learned so much.

Not a a beginners book for SQL Queries
By Dose Of Reality
This book was touted as a good beginners book. I hoped it would be about how to write queries. That is not what this book is about. This book details predominantly data base structure and maintenance. It has only the briefest mentions of SQL query code in one chapter. This was not worth the $30 I paid for it.

Well done Microsoft
By msr-norwalk
I was skeptical buying a Microsoft Press book for a CompTIA exam, however it has proven to be an excellent study guide. I've read more than one Network+ book and this one was by far easier to follow and better organized. It provides markers for key topics (so that when you are reviewing for the exam, you can just go over the important stuff) as well as doing a better job of explaining the more complicated aspects of the exam, such as decimal/hex to binary conversion and subnetting. I would easily recommend this book for anyone studying for the Network+ exam.

Practical Explanation of Information to the Novice Reader
By M. odom
This has been the easiest to read book out of all four books I have presently. It does an EXCELLENT JOB of breaking down parts of the information. The fact the book opens up with the OSI model is an example of how well it's written. New to IT or need to brush up? This is for you!!

The best Network+ training book!
By Eric Wes
I passed my Net+ recently reading only this and the "Network+ rapid review" book (by the same author.)

The layout of the material and how everything was summarized at the end was flawless.

Highly recommended!
