A very good and complete book on Fast
By Bas Lijten
I had the chance to read the book before it was released, and I must say: It is a very good and thorough "guide" on Fast Search for SharePoint. Every aspect of working with Fast: Infra, development and some business as well, are touched with this book. It's full of examples and the last chapter even works out a fictive business case. Everyone who does *something* with Fast Search for SharePoint 2010, should buy this book.

Great resource for those using FAST for SharePoint
By Gary Bushey
This book has a little bit for everyone, whether you are in charge of the servers running FAST for SharePoint, setting up FAST for SharePoint, or even developing for FAST for SharePoint. The chapters are broken down into logical sections that make it easy to find information that pertains to your tasks. I really like the chapter on tips and tricks that seem to be a catch-all for things that may not fit precisely in any other chapter but still provide great value to the reader.

I would recommend this book for anyone that interacts with FAST for SharePoint on more than just a user level.

This gives you a better foundation for SharePoint 2013 search than the books out now for SharePoint 2013
By Amazon Customer
They have greatly simplified the administration and configuration of search in 2013 but some of the core concepts discussed in depth here are glossed over in the current set of publications. Also, truth be told, we're working with one client that is implementing 2013 and the rest have just finished their upgrades to 2010. It's unlikely they'll be moving to 2013 all that quickly though the advantages of doing so are real.

What's the target audience?
By Rick Pierson
First off...the reviewer who criticized the editor for having the wrong book is the one who is wrong:this is C++, not C#. So that reviewer's dismissal should be dismissed. Second, as the editor pointed out, some reviews were for the wrong edition: they too should be dismissed. However...
I do not recommend this book for beginners. A lot of its "teaching" is done by cookie-cutter programming: find this line of code in the program...don't worry about what it actually means...now type these things under it...now compile. The reader gets working programs without fully understanding what x, y, and z mean.
And the authors don't know how to teach step-by-step, despite the book's title. It's as if they can't decide what their target audience is. Are they writing a step-by-step book (as the title implies) that gradually walks beginners through from beginning to end, holding their hands and easing them along? Sometimes. Or are they writing a book for people who already know C++ and just need to learn how to apply it to .NET? Sometimes. The worst part is that while it is possible to do both in one book, I don't feel the authors managed to do either. Beginners will be confused by the disorganized introduction of material (pointers and classes in chapter 2) and lack of explanations, while already-proficient-in-C++ programmers won't learn enough new stuff to make the book worthwhile (unless they are new to programming .NET with C++: then the later chapters will give them new stuff).
Here are some details, looked at from a newbie's perspective.
*********************************
"... (the endl stream manipulation operator inserts a new-line character in the stream.)" (p5)
*********************************
What the heck is a `stream', an `operator', and a `new-line', and what in the world does it mean for an operator to manipulate a stream? A newbie could be confused already...only 4 pages into the book.
********************************
"How does the compiler know which function should be called first? ... The rule is that the compiler will always generate code that looks for a function named main. If you omit the main function, the compiler reports an error and doesn't create a finished executable program." (p6)
********************************
That alone is not a problem. The problem arises when the rest of the book violates the rule just provided, without explaining why!
Only the first program in the book - the trivial "Hello World!" program -- uses Standard C++ (iostream, cout, etc.). The second and subsequent programs don't include a main() function!
The book has the reader "blindly" begin typing the second program on page 20, and that program contains several non-Standard C++ entries and omits several of the most common Standard C++ elements.
(1) The program does not have a main() function but does have a _tmain(). What exactly is a _tmain() function anyway? The book doesn't say.
(2) The program does not have the typical #include directive but does have #include "stdafx.h". So what exactly is the "stdafx.h" anyway? The book doesn't say. And why is this one surrounded by double quotes instead of by angle brackets? The book doesn't explain that either.
(3) The program does not have the typical using namespace std; statement but does have #using . What exactly is the ? The book doesn't say. And why is the typical using statement (such as using namespace std;) not prepended with a pound sign while the program's #using is? The book doesn't say.
(4) Related to the above, the program has a using namespace System; statement. So what exactly is the System namespace? The book doesn't say.
Here's another newbie-stumper.
***************************
"To access the member variables and functions, you have to dereference the pointer in one of two ways. You can use the dereferencing operator, an asterisk (*) followed by the dot notation - for example, (*cat).legs. " (p23)
***************************
Dereferencing a pointer? What the heck is a pointer? What the heck is dereferencing? The book hasn't explained either yet.
And why in the world is the book already talking about classes? Functions haven't even been covered, nor have variable types, looping, selection, scope, pointers, etc.
***************************
"The lifetime of an object instantiated from the class will be managed by the .NET Framework's garbage collector. When the object falls out of scope, the memory used by the object will be garbage-collected and no explicit calls to delete will have to be made." (p22)
****************************
What the heck does "fall out of scope" mean? A newbie wouldn't know from reading the book. What the heck is delete? And should the book really be discussing topics like dynamic memory allocation on the heap and memory management when less than 2 dozen pages in?
Now note the difference between these two.
****************************
Console.WriteLine("Animal 1"); (p25)
****************************
and
*****************************
Console::WriteLine(S"Welcome to your friendly Investment Planner"); (p49)
*****************************
Why does the second one prepend a capital `S' to the string while the first doesn't? The book doesn't say.
So far I've been disappointed with several of the Microsoft Press books I have purchased. It is almost as if MS is just pumping books out one after another...each one quickly thrown together...just to get presence on the shelf (or to flood the shelves with their books): knowing that people are more likely to by an authentic Microsoft book on Microsoft products.

Response to Jason E. Trout
By Eric T. Dettinger
I wanted to write in response to Jason E. Trout's review. First, I need to state up-front that I was the Technical Editor on the 2003 edition of this book.
The two errors that Jason points out indicate that he is reviewing the old (first edition) of Visual C++ .NET Step By Step. I double-checked the 2003 edition of the book and found that both these errors were caught and fixed.
The 2003 edition includes updates that reflect changes introduced with version 1.1 of the .NET Framework and Visual Studio .NET 2003. The chapters on Windows Forms have been entirely rewritten to reflect the inclusion of designers with Visual Studio that create forms coded with the Managed Extensions for C++. This means developers can now create Windows Forms using designers, just like a Visual Basic or C# programmer would, instead of needing to hand code them. Julian also rewrote the chapter on ADO.NET so the sample projects require Access instead of SQL Server.
So give the new edition a look if you have the chance. I am confident you will find the updates and new information handy, and that errors like the ones Jason mentions have largely been eliminated.
I would have preferred to post this review without rating the book, but Amazon's submission forms don't allow it.
Thanks,
Eric Dettinger

Much better than expected
By Kevin D Runion
I was a little bit worried that a Microsoft Press book might read like a dictionary. That was not the case. I find this book extremely easy to read, filled with very good analogies and explanations. I've always had issues understanding Object Oriented programming, mainly because most books only lightly explain it, and by the time they get to it you're reading chapter 83 and dealing with other complex concepts. I was overjoyed to see that object oriented programming was explained in Chapter 2 (right after the hello world exercise). Needless to say, I was able to understand it right away, for the first time.
Programming books are always hit and miss, sometimes they start too slow and then all of a sudden you're lost in advanced, unexplained topics, and don't know how you got there. Sometimes, the chapters just seem to drag on forever and it becomes easy to lose motivation on over covered material.
This book however is a work of art, the chapters are nice and short, easy to follow and have just the right amount of info to cover the topic. Every time a question flag gets raised in my mind, the answer is on the next line.
This book is worth the money and the time.

This book is a smorgasbord of mobile information
By T Anderson
I was thrown onto a mobile project a few months ago and admittedly needed to catch up fast. My primary development environment is Microsoft's .NET and although I had been keeping up with Windows Phone, I had not been keeping up with mobile as a whole. I would go as far to say keeping up with Windows Phone was not keeping up with the mobile world at all. Luckily this book is a smorgasbord of mobile information. I purchased and printed the Rough Cuts version as soon as it came out. This book saved me tons of time getting up to speed with the latest information on the mobile world.

The first thing we were tasked with was creating a mobile strategy based on our current business processes and their needs. Luckily this book starts off with a chapter on that. It really helped shape the direction we took by painting a realistic view of today's mobile world. It is a world of tradeoffs and understanding your business needs and requirements before blindly giving marching orders is a must.

It is not a choice between better technologies, or native applications versus mobile web applications, it is about knowing where you want to go and then choosing the tools and resources you need to get you there. There are no silver bullets and anyone who tells you one way, or one platform, will meet all yours needs, is lost and heading down a road to a dead-end.

I had developed on Pocket PC, Windows Mobile 2003, 5, 6, 7, 7.1 and played with Android and iOS, but have never had to mobilize a web site. I have honestly been doing my best to ignore HTML5, CSS, and jQuery. I simply cannot stand any browser development and find it unjustifiable unless it is for the open public. Too bad for me that was exactly what we were doing for the first phase of the project, mobilizing our public web site to increase usability.

We decided to go with MVC 4 and take advantage of the new mobile features. I quickly found that the Microsoft mobile browser detection using HttpCapabilitiesBase.IsMobileDevice Property absolutely sucks and that jQuery Mobile also has a few bugs on the different devices. We are not building a separate page for each device; we are attempting to address them all with jQuery Mobile.

This book does not pull punches and it gave me a realistic expectation of what mobilizing the public web site would take. Basically it is just the same situations that browsers have caused since there was more than two.

Expect to develop customizations for the different browsers just like you're back in the early 2000s. If you really want to take advantage of the different devices using the web, expect to develop different solutions for each device using server-side device detection. The book shows you how to take advantage of the best device detection repositories available. jQuery Mobile is not a silver bullet either. The book does a great job of outlining its features and also covering its disadvantages.

The book is broken down into three parts: Going Mobile, Mobile Sites, and Mobile Applications. The chapters are listed below.

Going Mobile
Pillars of a Mobile Strategy
Mobile Sites vs. Native Applications

Mobile Sites
Mobile Architecture
Building Mobile Websites
HTML5 and jQuery Mobile
Developing Responsive Mobile Sites

Mobile Applications
Patterns of Mobile Application Development
Developing for iOS
Developing for Android
Developing for Windows Phone
Developing with PhoneGap

The Mobile Application section covers building native applications. It first introduces functional patterns common to all devices. Understanding these is essential and anyone who has never done mobile development before should take the time to understand them.

iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and PhoneGap are given equal treatment in the Mobile Application section. In the iOS section the author also does a great job of not only introducing the iOS development environment, but also introducing MonoTouch. MonoTouch is a commercial framework that allows you to use C# to write iOS applications.

The PhoneGap chapter starts off with an overview of the virtual machine approach versus the shell approach, which are the two main paradigms for cross-platform development. In the overview of the virtual machine approach the author introduces Titanium Mobile and Flash builder. I like that the author is honest about the difficulties the come with using PhoneGap and that he doesn't try to sell it a as a silver bullet, but rather just another possible solution that comes with its own set of problems.

The Mobile Application section gives you enough information to get started down the path of learning the covered technologies. You won't come away a master iOS, Android, or Windows Phone developer, but you will come away understanding what each technology has to offer and a understanding of the challenges you must overcome with each.

The thing I found I liked best about this book is that it is not Microsoft centric, even though it is branded Microsoft Press. Yes he covers Microsoft tools, but definitely gives other technologies just as much attention, if not more.

The downloadable code is very well organized and usable. The author has also put up a companion site to show how the different types of browser detection tools work.

A mobile strategy is a balancing act. The book is a great place to get most of the information you need to make the right decisions about your mobile strategy. All in all I highly recommend this book to anyone looking at moving into the world of mobile development.

Handy, invaluable, up-to-date
By Krzysztof Satola
Architecting Mobile Solutions for the Enterprise by Dino Esposito should be interesting and valuable to decisionmakers and architects working on mobile solutions. The book is published by Microsoft Press but it covers not only Microsoft related technologies. I would rather say that you can find there more about non-Microsoft solutions, which is good and makes Mr. Espositos's book even more professionally credible. The author covers more general topics like mobile strategy and differences between mobile sites and native applications. After a general discussion we can find there more detailed information about mobile site architecture design and mobile website building. Dino Esposito describes HTML5 and jQuery Mobile. We learn about the importance of application responsiveness and good patterns of mobile application development. Tha last part of the book is devoted to architecture and development of native mobile applications for iOS, Android and Windows Phone platforms. There are simple applications discussed there (with source code explained) written in Objective-C and Cococa framework, MonoTouch framework (.Net), XAML, HTML, C# (Silverlight) and Java. The last chapter covers cross-platform development based on PhoneGap JavaScript approach.

The book helps to get an overall, up-to-day picture of the mobile software development, possible business models, budgeting concerns, and more. I especially like the way sample applications are described. Simple but yet complete and quite precise descriptions deliver enough information and rationales let architects easier and quicker to decide which technology would work best for solutions they are working on.

Going mobile is not cheap nor simple. Having a good guide handy (like this book) is invaluable. This book is unique and up-to-date. Architecting Mobile Solutions for the Enterprise by Dino Esposito should be read by wise decisionmakers and architects working on mobile solutions.

Excellent book, covers essentials very well, but could benefit from updates to reflect market changes.
By David Schwartz
I was hesitant to get this book, thinking it might only focus on Microsoft solutions. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that the author offers a very even-handed treatment of technologies without much bias towards Microsoft or any other technology provider. My only issue is that the market is shifting so quickly that the relevance of some topics has changed. For example, Android has expanded and become far more dominant than it was at the time the book was written, while Blackberry / RIM is pretty much nonexistent now. Also, iOS has evolved in ways that would be nice to see covered, and the use of mobile marketing has evolved in ways that aren't addressed. In short, it's an EXCELLENT book, although it would benefit considerably from a "refresh" to remove irrelevant material while updating the coverage to reflect more recent market dynamics.

Easy and breezy - excellent introduction to SSAS OLAP
By David Foley
This is an excellent starter for the OLAP portion of SSAS.

Chapters 1 and 2 provide a great introduction to some of the initially quirky concepts that SSAS uses. (A proper understanding of fundamental things like attribute hierarchies is crucial, especially if you come to SSAS with dangerous baggage from non-MDX-based BI platforms. If this describes you, make sure you understand these 2 chapters implicitly before proceeding).

Each of the following chapters has the same format - a conceptual overview followed by some exercises. The overview pieces are usually short (yet fairly complete, for overviews), very readable and can absolutely stand on their own - in other words, you can return to the material months later and clarify a concept in 60 seconds without having to wade through pages of rambling blather. I find this quite unusual for what is nominally an exercise-oriented book.

Chapters 8 and 10 contain nuggets regarding Scenario Dimensions and Writeback - personally I would really like to have seen the discussion on Planning applications developed a bit further, but it's probably of fairly narrow interest. Chapter 13 contains the best conceptual overview of Aggregation Design that I have yet seen.

If you find SSAS OLAP the most exciting part of the MS BI stack, and want to focus solely within that area, this is the best place to start. It's an easy (and at only 400 pages, quite breezy) read - you won't be a master when you get through it (specifically, MDX), but you will understand all of the major SSAS concepts, and that's an achievement in itself.

Note to SSAS OLAP newbies: Do NOT use the MSFT Books Online to start with. The tutorials there are adequate when it comes to button-pushing, and the technical reference sections are excellent when you have achieved a level of competency ... however, neither addresses the CONCEPTS properly ... start with this book and save yourself 3-6 months of pain!

Missing some inportant steps, but otherwise well written
By Jack Stegman
I purchased this book to learn SSAS quickly. I already had extensive experience with Sql Server, SSIS, Data Warehousing and building OLAP cubes. The book did a great job of describing and explaining Data Warehousing and dimensional data concepts. I was rather impressed early in the reading. Unfortunately, I found several issues and missing steps. The first and foremost of these was that the sample database does not install properly. I found other places where the step I was on didn't work because an important prerequisite step had been left out. While I still found the book quite helpful, a true novice would find it frustrating and impossible to use.

The Standard
By Ted Crace
William Stanek has been my favorite tech author for many years now. Ever since starting with Windows NT Pocket Consultant in 1999, I've been hooked.

He packs more into his books than any one. It's always clear and to the point, and it's one of the reasons his books are my favorites.

With almost 17 years of Win experience under my belt, I got this book to sharpen up on the newest version of Exchange. The stuff in here is amazing. I've learned a lot of new tricks from this book. Nothing escapes his eye, every section clears up something or gives expert insights in ways i wouldn't have thought of myself.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone upgrading from previous versions and any current administrators. For day to day work it can't be beat. Great work, William !

Great for learning or reference
By J Minute
This is the first Pocket Consultant book I've purchased. It walked me through all the essentials needed to learn Exchange 2007 (I used the 32-bit evaluation) and it pretty much covers everything.

The author provides examples of using the GUI or CMDlets to configure Exchange. He also provides valuable real-world tips. This one will be used often when it's time for deployment!

Disappointing
By Michael Settlage
The best thing about this book is the low price. Most of the commands in the book that I have tried are not correct or don't exist. Because of this, many examples examples do not work. There has to be a better reference for Exchange 207.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK FOR THE EXAM!!
By Christopher R Methe
Don't waste your money. This book was absolutely no help for the exam. It provides no details on commands used for any of the new technologies and only focuses on the new 2012 R2 material and leaves out all of the 2012 standard features.

So much for the "One Microsoft" policy
By goldlion11
I have over 50 IT certifications, acquired over more than a 10 year period. I know Microsoft exams tend to be hard, so I studied extra for this one, having read this Exam-Ref three times before taking the test. My score was in the mid 500s. I am not even going to bother taking the second shot.

Microsoft is doing a disservice to the IT community and to itself. It should be encouraging people to learn and spread its technologies. How in the world is a young person ever going to break into this field and establish credentials? Who said that becoming a recognized system administrator has to be as difficult as getting a PhD?

Microsoft should be focused on making computing easier over time, instead of harder. I actually was looking forward to learn about the power shell commands. Instead, they are used as an excuse to introduce syntax-focused test questions about commands that don't appear in any training materials. This test is about features that administrators don't exercise on a frequent basis - there is no need to memorize heavy syntax, when in practice someone can obtain all this info from a web search when it's needed.

So much for the "One Microsoft" policy - it seems Microsoft Press and the exam preparers are not talking to each other.

The book itself is useful. I wish I could give a rating here not on the book, but on the Microsoft certification management team. They are the ones who deserve 0 stars, for their failure to devise a test that measures what someone learns from the provided training materials.

Besides the introductory page, ALL OTHER PAGES on the Kindle edition are in only italics! Seriously? makes it unpleasant to read. Maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere that can reverse it but can't seem to find it. All other books are normal.

PLEASE Look for another book!
By Greg W
This book isn't worth your time or money. I certainly wasted mine on it. The Author is so caught up in his ability to write code that he forgot what the book is about. No explanations of the code are offered so that you can follow his train of thought. I think he is off in the Delta Quadrant somewhere. The index is next to useless. Try to find 'comments' and you are directed to a page that has the word 'comments' on it but explains nothing regarding adding COMMENTS to your code. Most of his examples don't even work outside his tiny environment - I couldn't make any of them work in my Excel code. Forget troubleshooting your code! His code is so perfect he obviously didn't fell the need to write anything that helps debug your code. The book also lacks an appendix with a list of functions for easy reference. If you want a function your going to spend a huge amount of time flipping through pages. DON'T BUY!

A Nice Book for Beginners.....
By J. P. Estep
I have recently been turned on to Visual Basic due to my position in an Engineering Firm. We deal with a ton of calculations based on current projects. This book has helped tremendously in getting a foothold of the begining stages of Excels Visual Basic coding.

Some of the other reviewers have not been happy with this book and claim it to be useless. I do not find that to be true. If you are an advanced user/developer of excel programing then there ARE many books that will help more than this book, but if you have never done any coding in Excel, then this book is a really good start. Hey, where can you find a good intro book of this caliber, used, for less than $5.00?

This book does have it's down falls. It is a bit difficult to follow sometimes in that they don't really give more detailed explainations of how things go together but if you can read the first few chapters and still understand then you should have no problems working through this down fall.

This book does have a large amount of information in it. It covers all the topics that a beginning coder would need. They discuss in each chapter what the topis is for and how it works. The layout of this book is a nice one too. I have 'Inside Out' books on 'MS Project & Outlook'. These are very nice as well and the main reason I went with this book on Excel. I do not feel I went wrong here at all and would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get into Excel Programming.

In Summary, this is a good book for the price. You should find it helpful while on your path to Excel programming.

Almost Useless
By T. Carroll
I have stacks of programming books covering Java and C++. I count this book as one of the two worst books I have ever purchased. I can use either a reference book or a tutorial type book, but I can't use a book that basically recites language attributes without any development or context. It doesn't work as a reference book because it leaves too much information out. There is no value added in this book.

Advanced Linux Programming, by CodeSourcery LLC, Mark L. Mitchell, Alex Samuel, Jeffrey Oldham

Advanced Linux Programming is divided into two parts. The first covers generic UNIX system services, but with a particular eye towards Linux specific information. This portion of the book will be of use even to advanced programmers who have worked with other Linux systems since it will cover Linux specific details and differences. For programmers without UNIX experience, it will be even more valuable. The second section covers material that is entirely Linux specific. These are truly advanced topics, and are the techniques that the gurus use to build great applications. While this book will focus mostly on the Application Programming Interface (API) provided by the Linux kernel and the C library, a preliminary introduction to the development tools available will allow all who purchase the book to make immediate use of Linux.

From the Publisher
Mark Mitchell, Alex Samuel, and Jeffrey Oldham are definitely some of the most talented authors I've had the pleasure of working with. Once you take a look at this book you'll see what I mean. This pre-published review of the book says it all: "As Linux becomes a more mainstream player in the internet infrastructure market, there is a tremendous need for lucid programming texts that also convey some of the philosophy behind the Linux and GNU movements. This book does an incredible job of covering all of that. I think it will be a standard against which other programming texts for Linux (and with all due respect to Richard Stevens, possibly UNIX as well) are measured."

Adam Goodman, Publisher, Linux Magazine CodeSourcery is a top-notch group of guys who have brought you a top-notch book you can't be without. They are the epitome of our mission here at New Riders - to publish the VOICES THAT MATTER. Take a look and determine for yourself. Enjoy!

From the Author
Back when we first started programming for the GNU/Linux environment, we had to learn it the hard way - by browsing man pages, online documentation, and the Linux source code looking for features we needed. We wished for a book that provided a road map of Linux's capabilities and quirks that manifest themselves in real-world programs. Now that we know our way around, we've written that book to help the next generation of GNU/Linux programmers learn the advanced features and techniques that are most often employed by professional developers for this platform.

Excellent, buy it, read it then read it again...
By A Customer
This book details literally hundreds of bits of information that you'll otherwise spend hours searching for during your involvement with Linux programming. Like, how to create a shared library, using fork, synchronization objects, and more and more and more in an exceptionally well considered, well laid-out format that dispenses with the fluff and provides just superb organization of content. Note that in this "deep-bowing" praise, that much of the information in this book is available (buried) in man pages and elsewhere and that these topics covered are certainly not new, they are simply concisely presented here with direct relation to your use of them for your Linux-based programming needs. The book *far* exceeded my expectations and I'd happily recommend it to all of the Linux programming/development mailing list readers in the world...if for no other reason than to save countless hours explaining what is covered in this book. Very C-oriented, naturally; doesn't really get into higher-level application development or design issues, stays right at the sweet-spot of Advanced, Linux and Programming from the *operating system* perspective where it is clear from the code examples, which nicely fit within just a few lines, that these authors *meant* to write a book about what they know and do and love. Tap into their brains, buy the book, read it then read it again. If Linux *system-level* programming is on your agenda, you need this book and I promise that you won't be disappointed. If higher level application programming is your bag, you probably still need this book however, you may not be as concerned with the system details to make my above promise come true...buy something on Qt or Gnome instead :)
Note that you won't get a lot of operating system fundamentals, theory of operation or other academic texts on that broad topic, rather, just useful "stuff" to write programs for Linux-based systems.

From a Student Perspective...
By Matthew Skoda
I'm working on my BS in Computer Science, and have spent years hunting over the web and bookstores for information on programming in the Linux enviroment.
-This book is the BIBLE!
I open each chapter and section as if I'm opening a treasure... and that is what this book is: a treasure trove of information, from thread management, interprocess communication, shared memory, devices, to even implementing inline assembly code!
This book is well written as an introduction without overloading the reader with tangential information: it introduces each topic, shows hows it works and how to implement it (including simple illustrative sample code examples you can on your own machine), and where to get info on more in depth coverage.
This book is a MUST for anyone who wants to understand the Linux enviroment! -Heck: it makes a good read just as an introduction to advanced tools in general! -I wish I had it years ago, and recommend it for ANYONE interested in programming in Linux, or just interested in developing their programming tools beyond "Hello World" !
Heck: any CS teachers out ther should consider creating a programming course based on this book as an intro to advanced progamming topics in general: the authors have already done most of the work introducing not only how to use the tools, but how the tools work and how the system implements them!

Basic basic linux programming and not good
By T. Tran
I bought the "beginning linux programming" by Richard Stone and Neil Matthew( i listed the authors because there is anohter book same title) and I bought this one because of the hi mark and hope it would help my linux programming skill but I was so disappointed. Nothing in this book is not covered by the BLP which even explaines better and more examples. I thought advanced programming book should give in depth coverage of topics or techniques or common mistakes from beginner but this book doesn't not. I usually buy book based on the rating if i can't check out at bookstore so I want people to know. The decision is yours but check the book first.
